I ran against a 20 year incumbent state rep. last year as a 19 year old who is part of the minority party in my area, and I can say that running for office on a local state level involves a lot of walking, shaking hands, realizing that you have no idea how to solve these issues whiling trying to make it look like you do, and meeting a lot of really nice and cool people with a small amount of people who just want to be left alone. Over all it was a really good experience I think. I really grew as person during that time

It's just like how Socrates said. Those who are truly qualified to exercise power, and understand the great responsibilities of doing so, are often those who do not want to be in power. John Green is such a person.
Those who think they are qualified to exercise, those who think they are capable of holding great responsibilities, are often neither qualified or responsible people, but the ones in power anyways. Both presidential nominees of the most recent US election are clear examples of this.

"We desperately need those people in office". No John, we desperately need YOU in office.
I, among many others (I suspect), respect you way too much to let you off the hook for this. Really?! You don't want to do it because it is hard and difficult? You've dedicated your success to making the world a better place, surely not because it was the easiest course of action or personally expedient. Running for public office would give you the pulpit to institute real changes that can directly and significantly improve the lives of others.
What angers me the most about this video and your reluctance to seek any public office is that if you ran, regardless of the office that you'd seek, you'd probably win. Through this platform, you have brought togeather individuals from all walks of life and you possess a charisma that draws people to you and your ideas. You're incredibly bright and have proven, throughout your career, your benevolence. It's fine if you are reluctant, but know this, your leadership is DESPRETLY wanted and NEEDED. Your notoriety affords you a unique opportunity to lead and while you have done so incredibly through this medium, it pales in comparison to what you could do in office. John, you have the ability to dramatically change the world for the better, but it is ultimately up to you whether you choose to answer the call.
I sincerely hope that you reconsider.

There has always been a strong derision among intellectuals towards running for office. I think its a great shame, analogous to mathematicians pursuing jobs in investment as opposed to the contributions they could offer in the fields of Science. The problem is, *these jobs exist*. They have a tangible effect on our lives, and if good, intelligent people don't fill these roles than foolish easily corrupted ones will. And we all suffer for it.

John, I completely understand and agree with your reasoning for not running for office. But you should do it anyway.
Hear me out. I promise to only pitch this once. If you're unconvinced afterwards, I'll never mention it again.
We need more people like you in office. Those willing to listen to people, and especially people willing to listen to those they disagree with. You excel at this. We need people willing to realize that the world is a complex place and that people are complex beings. Look at all the stuff you've done without being office. All the charity work, VidCon, and generally making this planet a better place to be. Imagine would you could do in office.
John, I've never voted. I never plan to vote. But if you were to run in a district I could vote in, I'd sign up and vote for you in a heartbeat. If that doesn't say something, I don't know what would.
So, please, reconsider. You could do amazing things in office. And if you get to a high enough office, you could place an executive order to ban all meetings! That alone should make it worthwhile, no?

You should run for office, You seem pretty moderate and have capable of critical thinking which is something the alt right and regressive left lack.

And again when I say Republicans i mean the republican party as a whole. There are several Republican individuals that I frankly like and respect though they are far and few in-between these days. Many more I suspect they themselves are not racists but they have to work with many racists and garner the support of many racists.
That is not to excuse the Democratic parties corporate hacks who often use the excuse of racists and xenophobia as a catch all scape goat as to why they loose elections. Rather than pursue popular policies like free college, getting money out of politics etc. Those hacks use it as a fricken crutch which is how I feel your coming from but to say the Republican Party is not racist is just being FUCKING BLIND to what they have said, promised, and DONE as a party.

    • @culwin
      @culwin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

phoenixkhost, you have demonstrated no critical thinking abilities of your own. Democrats would like people to have that ability, but they can't make you have it. Your comment is shockingly ignorant and convoluted. I'm guessing you're a troll or a Trump supporter, either way, critical thinking is important and you should strive for it.

I know many viewers of this video arn't from Illinois and none of this matters too you, but this is a big part in my life. I don't live in chicago, I live in a town right allong the mississippi. I grew up in this town and even throught my only 15 years on this planet I've seen my city slowly falling appart. Whole streets barren that once flurised with small businesses and big complanys alike. many new companies have a very small chance of surviving. This forces many move across the river to Iowa. I love my city I wish to one day raise children of my own here but I want them to grow up somewhere with opportunities not a place where we fix bullet holes with bandages. though I myself can't vote if i could i would vote for Daniel Biss. Just way you speak of Daniel and though recurch he seems like someone who truly cares about this state and wants to bring it back to prosperity. I hope that he wins the upcomming ellection, because this state needs a change. I hope that he can help repair this dammages state.

Like, I'm sure Mr. Bliss is a nice guy and all, but i'm not going to vote for him, mainly because I don't live in Illinois, and mainly because I don't care if you're nice, I want to know your position on certain policies and issues.
