Greyhounds are the weirdest dogs on earth. I’ve had regular dogs all my life but recently adopted an ex racer greyhound. He’s everything I never expected a greyhound to be. Incredibly gentle, quiet, lazy, affectionate and calm. But man, when he runs it’s like watching something from another planet.

The cheetah keeps his head and spine mostly level the whole time, while the greyhound does not; all other things being equal, this alone would make the cheetah faster. There is almost no wasted motion/energy in the cheetah's run. The more flexible spine of the cheetah also enables it to absorb shocks better, helping to conserve energy, and permit minute course corrections, which add to overall speed.
    Both magnificent animals!

My greyhound is an ex racer (she was called Diamond Lass). She was quickly dropped because she does the most impractical, unmajestic run. She keeps her upper legs still while her lower legs do all the moving, so her run is more of a shuffle and in motion she looks like she has tiny stubby legs. Yet, she is still so freaking fast, outracing all the dogs in the dog park.

The cheetah squeezes and then expands its entire torso, adding a full-body pumping action to it's run. The dog only runs mostly with it's legs. And oddly, tries to make up for it with more upper body use. I raised a greyhound from puppy til she passed away at 13 years and it was the most beautiful and exotic creature you might ever see. And we'd see her flash across the windows as she'd run laps around the yard for fun. Truly a stunning animal.

Here's the science behind why the cheetah is so fast:
    1. Long stride.
    2. Head is small and centered on the body. Eliminates wind resistance.
    3. Flexible spine.
    4. Claws do not retract, which means they grip terrain better.
    5. Chest cavity is enlarged to support large heart and lungs, which circulate oxygen better through body.
    6. Tail acts as a rudder and for balance.
    7. Whole body in general is insanely flexible and can support sharp turns, which is unique for an animal of that size.

I have two retired GHs, and a joy to see. Best dogs in the world BTW. Thing about the GH that amazes me is not just the top speed, it's the zero to top speed that's so impressive. In a blink of an eye they are at top speed. Seems like 2-3 strides and they are 40+ mph. I'd be interested to know how long the cat takes to do their 0 - top speed also. Also, GH's can turn on a dime like a fighter jet and that's cool to watch also.

Her nose picked up a scent right as we walked out of the garage and she bolted. She was at the end of the culd de sac turning the corner before I made it to the end of the drive way. Caught up to her just around the corner sniffing a bush. She's never been off a leash since unless in the house or fenced in yards. Awesome dogs. Sweet, gentle, mellow and just the easiest of any dog I've ever had. I've had her for almost 9 years now.

it’s more than just time, it’s evolutionary pressure. Cheetahs evolved over thousands and thousands of years in the wild, based on biological needs (hunting for food, avoiding predators) so that only the fastest, most perfect runners survived.
Greyhounds are domesticated animals specifically bred by humans for the sport of racing, a sport that’s largely fallen out of favor. They don’t have the same evolutionary need (living in the wild, avoiding predators, hunting food) to become more perfect runners.
Theoretically, a dog breeder could engage in a focused breeding program to make greyhounds that can run faster and more like a cheetah, but that would require time, effort, money, and most importantly, interest that just isn’t there. The interest, for those that still race greyhounds, is just to have a greyhound good enough to win races.

The cheetah's mechanics seem a LOT more efficient. Most notably, we don't see the cheetah throwing its head up and down like we do with the greyhound. The cheetah clearly seems better able to separate the mechanics of its high-speed gait in the shoulders/front legs almost completely from its head/neck. The greyhound's gait is losing a lot of energy due to its head bobbing up and down. I would imagine there are similar losses of energy happening elsewhere in their gait; but that particular one is just the most striking.

Cheetahs put 100% into their sprints and because the physical exertion is so costly, it's a once a day affair. A greyhound can run around at top speed numerous times per day and the more opportunity they have to do so the more they can endure. Dogs hunt in packs and like relay cyclists, they alternate the leading and trailing dogs to maximise speed and endurance. Greyhounds are actually quite agile, capable of changing directions with minimal loss of speed - only Whippets are more agile, their lower centre of gravity affords them faster acceleration. One of my big whippets easily ran 60kmph along side my car, which he out accelerated convincingly.

Females are nomadic and don't even conform to a pride. The cheetah uses its incredible stealth and explosive speed to feed itself and see after its young. Perhaps you can spend a few months out on the Savannah as I have done several times, say Tanzania and Kenya? If so you will learn where the phrase "the quick and the dead" came from very fast. You will see that speed is the key to survival when nothing can catch you and nothing can escape you.
