I just lost my Italian greyhound 3 weeks ago and I have never been so in love in my life. 16 years of the deepest love I ever felt. About potty training though, I spent a year trying to potty train mine as a puppy and just no luck. I was getting so frustrated and just didn’t know what to do. I took her one weekend to stay with my parents when I went out of town and came back and she was all potty trained. All it took was spending three days with my parents potty trained dogs using the doggie door and it clicked with her and till the day she died she never had a single accident again. So if you have one and you can’t potty train it try taking it around other dogs who are potty trained so they can watch and learn.
I believe that you lost your little Italian Greyhound I have one she's a year old today June 29th 2024 beautiful color I'm 75 and I find it very hard and I'm thinking of looking for someone to adopt her if you're interested right back to me
My Italian Greyhound lived 18 years- he was always flying off the couch, bed, the deck in the backyard, and would even jump really high to get on surfaces. He never broke a leg; amazing really. Maybe because he was sprinting since the beginning and he developed enough muscle to withstand the landings? Max was trained well, but he still had accidents in the house. No matter how well you train them I think this is inevitable. He hated the rain and cold, but I bought custom coats for him for every weather situation, rain coat/heavy winter coat/lighter fall coat, and then would just push him outside and say "you're a dog this is the way," haha!
Hi Steven, 18 years is a wonderful life. It sounds like Max had a great life. I am glad you never had a leg injury. Thank you for telling us about Max. They never stay with us long enough. Love them everyday we have them . Joyce
Mines is 5 months old. They are the happiest dogs I've ever seen. They are full of energy and love to play and jump. No matter how much you train them they will revert back to their playfulness which can be a little annoying at times. Definitely a joyful dog.
Hi Mark, Yes lots of energy and lots of fun to have an Italian Greyhound. i like to use puzzle games to help my dogs to use the energy. Omega Paw roll a treat ball, nina ottosson Dog Brick. Just some suggestions. you can see the puzzles in my videos. Let me know if you need a link to the puzzles. Thank you, Joyce
Truly an informative video! I currently have a very sweet loveable Whippet who has just turned one (the second Whippet I’ve owned), but in the future I’ve considered downsizing to a more manageable sized Iggy. Every Iggy I’ve met has been gloriously joyful, affectionate, and cuddly... it’s great to know that going from a Whippet to an Iggy means there’ll be many more hugs and laughs to come! Also, as someone who’s brushed my Whippet’s teeth religiously since day one, I really appreciate you warning people about setting up a structured brushing routine. I agree it’s absolutely imperative to do this to avoid not just costly dental bills, but also most importantly to preserve the well-being of your furry loved one.
Thank you. You sound like the perfect person to have an Italian as Greyhound. You understand the problems and love the personality. If you have any questions, please ask. Joyce
@@DiamondDogTraining Thank you so much, Joyce! I’d love if you could answer the following questions. I’ve heard from other Iggy owners about the toilet training issues you mentioned-totally fine as we’ve successfully worked through this issue with our dear Whippets. However, I have also heard that some male Iggies can pee on themselves (e.g. on their chest/stomach), so I was wondering how common this issue is in the breed. Also, I know each pup is different, and personality is very much dependent on how they are raised in the owner’s home/socialised, but I was wondering what difference in personality traits there are in getting a female vs. a male Iggy. So far we’ve had two adoringly loveable female Whippets who also love sharing the bed at night... lol so it was very reassuring to know that your beautiful Iggies are also obsessed with bed cuddles. Thanks again!
Thank you for the video. I love this breed. I have 3 and they are sweet, affectionate, independent minded, and funny. I live in a cold climate and it is true about the shoveling. My husband makes fun little paths for them in the backyard. With 2 coats and long booties each we are able to go out most of the year. I'd also add that if you don't want a couch buddy or a dog who sleeps in bed, don't get an IG. All my 3 are trained to go outside and are great about it. They will stare at me asking. As puppies, I took them out all the time and even if they had an accident I'd bring them outside to finish on the grass and praised them. I also don't crate or leave them alone for more than 4h. I also noticed that my family friends with whippets need them in a leash always due to high prey drive. All my 3 iggies do well on off leash trails (never near a road of course). Their need to stay near the pack and our family is fascinating. But remember each IG is a little different based on their own personality as well as how you raised them.
Hi Betta, Thank you for your comment. Yes, they are all lovers and love to cuddle in bed. Yes, I have shoveled many little paths in the snow . Has to be all the way to the grass for some of the IG's. Many of my IG's went outside in all weather. But a few really preferred to use the potty pads in inclement weather. I find it more convenient to have the potty pads available for use in the bad weather and also late at night with the coyotes and other animals at night. Even though my yard is fenced, I always take my dogs outside on a leash after dark. Yes, they are so different. Nicky stays right near me all the time, but Beezie is a hunter and a bunny or chipmunk and she would be go after it in a flash. I would like to say she would come back quickly because of all the rewards she gets for coming, treats, play, toys etc. But I will not take a chance. My girls are always on leash unless in a fenced area. Yesterday she found a mole in the yard and chased it until it escaped under the fence. I don't know for certain she would have come if she could have continued to chase the mole. Thank you, Joyce
My Iggy is a 8 months old male and has a four year old German Shepherd sister and they are best buddies. They do everything together. This is my first iggy, but I think I’ll always have one after Loki. He’s so smart and cuddly. He’s surprisingly been pretty easy to house train as well.
Thank you so much! I love her so much. Check out more of my videos about Italian Greyhounds. If you have any questions, please leave a comment. Do you have an IG. Thank you. Joyce
You are so kind. I will tell Nicky. She is a sweetheart. Do you have an Italian Greyhound or are you thinking of getting an IG. I would love to know more about your dog. Thank you Joyce
Shovelling a path through the snow in your backyard is totally a thing I wish I had learned sooner. So is a 300$ bespoke winter snowsuit with boots if you have very cold winters.
@@DiamondDogTraining Hello. I am trying to decide between an Italian Greyhound and a Whippet. Therefore, I try to analyze as much information as possible to make this difficult decision on an informed basis. Previously, I had a Riesenschnauzer (the Giant Schnauzer) and a Xoloitzcuintli (miniature).
Hi Alex, the two breeds you had previously were very different from a whippet and Italian Greyhound. No do sure about the personality of the xolo. Do you have any more questions or comments I can answer for you. I had a full size greyhound and then chose to have the smaller IG with the same Greyhound personality. The Whippet I find to be a tougher dog because of the terrier. But the whippet is also nice and more substantial, just my personal opinion based on the Whippets I have known.
Thank you! Not only was this video helpful and informative, it might just be the sweetest video on the Internet. I think we can go ahead and delete the Internet now, just keep this video :)
My IG went in for a dental appointment and he was not the same for 6 months. Clearly there was an issue with anesthesia or oxygen to the brain. He spent a lot of time staring off blankly, then would snap out of it. Eventually he became himself again. Also, he had seizures until I read that dogs cannot have any food (often soft treats) that contain Polypropylene Glycol. As soon as I changed his treats, he never had another seizure and lived 12 more years.
i am sorry your dog had such a horrible experience. i always worry about anesthesia. And am so relieved when my dog is home and awake. check if you ever need to have an Italian Greyhound have anesthesia that everyone realizes the greyhound family is really sensitive to anesthesia. Thank you, Joyce
I just rescued an 8 month old….. I was told it was a chihuahua….I could see her ribs. I thought she was just emaciated. Got her home and discovered she was Italian greyhound mix. Not the breed I ever would have chosen, but so far it’s been great. Very easy to train, cuddly. Only problem is she chews up everything. Even canvas Kong toys.
Hi, chewing could have many reasons. She could be unsure in her new home. Stuffed Kongs are always the best for helping a dog relax. Maybe she is still teething at 8 months. Chew toys like bully sticks with holder, himalayan chew, benebone. All of those are good. some of my videos may help you. Let me know if you have more questions. IG's are the best cuddlers, must be kept warm, not the easiest to housetrain. Depends on the mix as to coat and tolerance of the cold. Thank you, Joyce
@@DiamondDogTraining Yes! We adopted one 2 weeks ago. He is 2.5 years old. We knew his owner. She passed away and the caretaker wanted to find a home that could care for him. We've owned several dogs, but "Reilly the Iggy" is so different! He loves our other dog, but she is older and not willing to play with him much. In his previous home, he was never walked because the owner was too weak. She let him pee & poop on her apartment balcony. She discouraged visitors to play with him because she couldn't. He is adjusting well to living in a big home with a yard and getting plenty of walks and love. Of course, potty training is a BIG challenge. I think he is getting more comfortable with going outside, but still at times goes on the potty pads we have. He is super skittish, but a HUGE cuddle bug when we are in the bed. I just LOVE him. If we could just get through the potty training part! I will take him outside as much as humanly possible. I think that will help a great deal.
Could this breed do well with other breeds? I have a toy poodle currently. She’s 8 months old, weighs 8 pounds and is 12 inches at the shoulder (a bit over sized for a toy). We might be getting another dog in a few years. You said they do well with multiple IG’s but would a toy poodle companion be ok too?
Hi Brynne, Yes, Italian Greyhounds love other dogs. your dog and an Italian greyhound sound like a perfect fit. in a few years, when you introduce a puppy Italian Greyhound to your adult dog, the puppy will be wild and bouncy. Introduce slowly so your poodle is not overwhelmed by the energy. Let me know if you have more questions.Thank you, Joyce
Thank you for your information about IG , we currently have 2 but we have had this wonderful breed for 15 years also whippets . Our 1 year old puppy who is now house trained sometimes marks his territory generally only in a room he doesn’t often visit. Your advice would be most helpful. Thank you
Yes, a wonderful breed. The best. Sounds like your puppy does not consider the room he pees in to be part of the house to keep clean. Go to that room with him on A leash and sit and work on a computer or play games with him and watch tv. Make sure you take him outside before you go in the room and immediately outside after you have been in the room. You can also move his food bowl and feed him in that room . Hope this helps. Thank you Joyce
Hi there, I would understand if you don't respond to this because it's an older video but I do have a question that I can't really seem to find an answer to. I am also considering an IG but I live in Saskatchewan Canada where our winters average -10 - -20 C/15 - -4F and can get as cold as -40C/-40F. I know IGs aren't built for winter and I already saw your video on toilet training puppies being difficult but not impossible. What would you recommend, should we just toilet train the dog to go indoors during winter or should we persevere, dress them up and make them go outside?
Hi, I would toilet train to go inside in the winter. My girls always go inside on their pads when the temperature drops down low and even in rainy horrible weather. Also with the coyotes, they frequently go inside at night rather than taking a chance of not seeing one outside. I think toilet training inside is a very wise idea for an Italian Greyhound where ever you live. Let me know if you get an IG and if you have any questions. Thank you . Joyce
IG's like to sprint and run fast and gallop for shorter stretches and then stop. Just like the larger greyhound. They don't like to run for a long distance like 3 or more miles.
My baby boy is an (unconfirmed but if you see him you can tell by body) italian greyhound mix (we think mixed with Chihuahua based on his appearance). The potty training is so true, he did pad train but never got house broken. I have a silicone pad the put his on so it isnt right on the floor. Fortunately his face is less narrow due to being a mixed breed so less risk of dental issues. He is the sweetest little guy though. Super cuddly. Sticks to me like absolute glue.
Thank you for the informative video! I have a one-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, and I'm thinking about getting an Italian Greyhound. Do you think these two breeds are compatible, or will the JRT have significantly more energy than the IG?
I have never had a Jack Russel even play with an IG. You will need to teach the Jack Russel to be very gentle playing and be careful the Jack Russel does not think of the IG as prey when it runs. I would talk to other Jack Russel owners and see if they think the Italian Greyhound will even be safe with a Jack Russel. Thank You. Joyce
Joyce, I have a question. Our Twigs is impossible to walk. He is afraid of sudden noises, like leaves skittering along the ground. We had a chain link fence built in the backyard so he could exercise, but he’ll only fetch a ball a few times. I would like him to keep his muscles up, but he strains anxiously, even with the proper collar on. I’m afraid he’ll harm his windpipe. I’ve tried to get a harness for him, but haven’t been able to find one to fit his body shape. Would you happen to know where I could find an Iggie harness, or if such a thing actually exists? PS. I hope you had good luck with your dog’s teeth. Since Twigs had some of his teeth out he can’t eat rawhide bones. His mouth bleeds, as his gums get crushed in spots.
@@DiamondDogTraining Thank you very much. I will do that as I am starting two years out from actually bringing a new pup into our home. We love our whippet girl and sighthounds in general across the board. An iggy would be a lovely addition to our family.
Thank you for your nice comment. Nicky was awake from the surgery very quickly and had a full recovery. You are right anesthesia is so important. I know my vet is very aware of the problems IG's can have with anesthesia. i always ask questions to be sure the vet is aware of the IG special issues. Thank you for mentioning the anesthesia. I love the Petsmile Professional toothpaste. Since I found that toothpaste, my dogs teeth and sparkling white. i do have a video on Petsmile toothpaste if you have an opportunity to watch it. Joyce
@@DiamondDogTraining Thank you for the reply! I told my partner about it, naturally we dread any type of injury let alone one that requires anesthesia. I love how you said they think they can fly, it's so true. I was just brushing tonight, I can never get him to open so to get the back! We also got Ossie at 2 years old and from a show dog breeder, he was 2cm too big and useless to her but he's now everything to us and definitely a spoiled king of the castle.
Joyce. What made u pick Italian greyhound over greyhound Dog? May I ask? May family is thinking about getting a greyhound dog, Thanks again for your time and knowledge Thumbs up 👍
Hello, my first dog was an Irish Setter. While I had Banner, I got Stormy who was a full sized greyhound. After Stormy, I was moving to a smaller apartment and started looking at the Italian Greyhound. IGs have the same sweet sighthound personality and temperament as the greyhound with a few differences. Basically the size fit better into my life. That was 40 years ago. And I am so happy with everything about Italian Greyhounds. Hope this helps. Any questions please ask. Joyce
Hello there thank you so much dor the video! Would you recommend even brushing a puppys teeth who is teething? My pup is 11 weeks old and those sharp ones are really coming through now. She was sold to me as a pure whippet puppy, however they only showed the mother, and she is so so tiny still i am somewhat convinced she maybe italian greyhoundor at least partly. Thanks again, david
Great question. Before teething starts. Help your puppy to get comfortable with your finger in their mouth with toothpaste and also the soft tooth brush with tooth paste. While your puppy is teething, I do not use the toothbrush. I think the puppy mouth is already sore. I use my finger to massage the gums while they are teething. I start brushing with the toothpaste and toothbrush when the puppy is finished teething. Thank you. Joyce
@@DiamondDogTraining thanks so much for the speedy reply! I'll definitely start doing that right away, albeit somewhat reluctantly as she is an extremely relentless biter at the moment 😅
They are sighthounds. They love to run. A fenced area is the best. There are some that naturally want to stay close and with lots of training, may be ok off leash . But you always need to be alert for the squirrel, rabbit chipmunk and be ready to grab the leash. Safety is always fenced area. Thank you . Joyce
My iggies lived for 14&15years respectively and off lead on a small farm and when we went into our small local towns. They would stay with me or sometimes in my van which was parked so that my dogs never had to cross a road to find me. This worked really well for my two sublimely perfect little ones.
I really enjoyed your video, I am just starting my research. Looking for a companion now that I work from home. I have an elderly cat who would be the only other pet in the home. What are your thoughts on how a 1-2 year old dog would react with a cat in the environment? Traditionally are they good with cats? The cat is our little old lady and has been around dogs in the past before our yorkie passed away. Great content and keep up the amazing work!
Hello, Italian Greyhounds can be great companions with a cat. a puppy will have so much energy that you will need to help your elderly cat and redirect the puppy when the elderly cat is overwhelmed. If you are wondering, a 1-2 yesr old Italian Greyhound is still a puppy. At that age the puppy will still be bouncing off the furniture and possibly the walls. If your cat was younger, then the cat and Italian Greyhound would be able to play more together. Perhaps your elderly cat is still really active which would allow the 2 to play together more. A cat and an Italian Greyhound may curl up together and wash each others ears when they have accepted each other. But it takes time to help them adjust. An Italian Greyhound will want to chase the cat if it runs. hope this helps. Joyce
Yes, you must be vigilant all the time. IGs think they can fly. But need exercise to build strong bones. Lots of pillows and teach them to jump down and not out into the air. Chairs always pushed in and no sofa where they can get to the back and jump off. Just a few tips to help. Do you have an IG or thinking about getting one? do you have any other questions?Joyce
video may be casting a shadow or that was filmed in 2021. We were all much heavier because of covid. check out the most recent videos . Thank you. Joyce and Nicky
I started adding a product Healthymouth liquid to their meals and it is working great. I still brush their teeth but not as often as i did . not as frequent dentals. Thank you, Joyce
Give you puppy you have now lots of love and attention and treats when you are petting bathe new puppy. The 6 month is young enough they probably will be great friends. You will have 2 babies and twice the work and twice the fun. Let me know how you are doing. Thank you . Joyce
I have an Italian greyhound she's a year old today which June 29th 2024 she's a year old I find it very hard on me I'm not used to that breed I've had Shih tzus I had Pomeranians but Italian Greyhounds are very hard to take care of and I'm going to maybe be looking for someone to adopt her
Gail, please contact IGCA rescue. They will help you. Please don’t try to place her yourself. You said how difficult the Italian Greyhound is to take care of. Let a person from rescue help you. Joyce
I think “CenCal” chihuahuas (mine included) are likely mixed with Italian Greyhounds. The look of my chihuahuas are like a miniature Italian greyhound, exact same confirmation. I also have a Great Dane: the similarities between their confirmation/behaviors are uncanny and seem to need further discussion… anyone have thoughts?
Daily brushing is not necassary if you give them a good diet and treats designed to clean teeth. My dog is 4, never had dental issues and has perfectly white teeth. I think I've brushed my dog's teeth maybe twice.
I've never met a vet who didn't know how to anesthetize an IG. An IG properly exercised as a pup should have strength to endure what would cause a fracture. The biggest CON is cancers skittishness from over breeding!
Our vet is one of those rare vets who truly loves animals, and was born to be a vet. He had taken some time off when we had to get his teeth pulled. The young vet doing the surgery didn’t know about the proper anesthesia. I had to tell him, and ask him to research it.
Oh my gosh! My daughter just got a male IG and he is the sweetest thing! When he sleeps he wants behind you should and he snuggled up into the crook of your neck and his nose usually just below the ear. So very sweet! But whenever I walk anywhere in the house, or even sit on the potty for a second, he is always jumping up and running beside me. It gets so annoying. I have gotten him to sit, a command he know, when I set on the toilet and I tell him to sit and he does so I scratch his head and give him praise, but the second I quit petting him and quickly reach for toilet paper, he’s jumping up on my knees again. I also have a 3 and 5 yr old grandsons, and while the other dog in the house is a. 2 yr old GSD, we have to keep watch because her size. What I hate the most, I’d when the IG jumps up at my 3 yr old grandson, his feet, and nails are at my grandsons face level, so it really irritates my grandson and it’s dangerous, I’m scared he’s going to get hurt. Any immediate steps we can take to stop the jumping? He loved the boys and the boys love him but the jumping has to stop. I’ve tried turning my back on him, or ignoring him, but haven’t seen any progress.
Italian Greyhounds are velcro dogs. They love to be close to you all the time. Sleep with you, sit with you. Especially since he was just adopted, he is going to be really clingy as he fears he will not stay with you. spend time with him. sit on the floor and cuddle him and love him. then put a soft bed on the floor beside you and put some yummy food in the bed. teach him laying in the bed beside you is where he gets the food rewards and also your pets. you can then slowly move the bed a foot away from where you are sitting and he will learn to lay in the bed. IG's need lots of cuddles and love. As he settles into your home, he may get a little more independent, but maybe not. you can put the bed on the floor and sit with him and feed him as he lays in the bed as your grand kids are playing. you are right to watch the size of the GSD when the dogs are close together. also you need to closely supervise the interaction with the 2 grand children and the IG. Small children do not realize they can hurt the IG with play. Small children should be sitting on the floor with the IG in their lap and never try to pick up the dog or carry it. When a child carries an IG, the dog may wiggle and jump out of their arms or fall and get hurt. you do not say the age of the IG. The young dogs need to be watched very carefully so they do not jump off the furniture and break a leg. if the IG is an adult, the bones are more formed but still need supervision with all small children. you may already know this information. IG's are special because they love to cuddle and be close. Thank you, Best, Joyce
@@DiamondDogTraining thank you so much for this advice. I will share it with my daughter. That’s the thing she loves most about him, and me too, as long as my covers are right, but I love the warmth of his nose as he sleeps with it in the crook of your neck. We just woke up from a nap together. I did notice today, with the 5 yr old grandson, when he’s jumping up on him, he reaches about his neck area, but with the 3 yrs old, when he’s jumping upon him, his feet and nails are directly at his face, mouth, nose and eyes area, and he’s just flailing them wildly, I’m so fearful my grandson will really be hurt. I read or watched something…” feet on the floor”…that is what needs to be our priority in training. Goose is 6 months old. Supposedly sold by a breeder to a military family and they got orders to go overseas the following day. The next day, my daughter had bought him. Please, some guidance on the “feet on the floor” would be much appreciated. The children sit on the couch or floor if they hold Goose. They are both supervised so Goose’s little legs won’t get hurt, or anything else. And we often caution the boys to be gentle, and theGSD when they really get to playing, to “slow things down” when it seems to be going a little too rough, or starting too.
Teach 4 on the Floor by using Goose dog food. Drop food on the floor to get Goose to look down as he is standing in front of you . Keep food on the ground as he is standing in front of the kids. Teach sit as he approaches a person . Goose wears harness and leash for control. You hold leash short. Before he jumps, reward for 4 on the floor . Joyce
I had been looking for months on petfinder all the animal shelters and organizations within a 50 mile radius and had not seen any dogs that made MY ears perk up. I thought this was simply my heart still grieving over the loss of my 14yr old retriever mix rescue (funny we always said who rescued who)Molly Moshbausch Miss Mosh my girl my heart my best friend my angel. One day I had to quickly retrieve an email opened my email in box and hmm Petfinder has several pets for me to check out okay ill just scan here quickly aww so sweet so many wait stop go back this little face with big brown eyes staring up at the camera as if to say Whyyy whyy am I here what did i do to make you not love me enough to never ever send me away from you? I burst into tears to my shock. I filled out the forms not even seeing the distance at this point there was no doubt in my mind. The shelter in Van Nuys called me back immediately and told me her story...owner surrender pregnant wife and husband stated although she had never bitten anyone they could not be sure once their baby arrived and she would tear things up when left alone not potty trained and not spayed only 6 months old..sight unseen and you pay for her and pick her up here is our address...5 hours of driving up, we are so excited she is sweet and gentle and loving and obedient she is also emaciated has a scar from her chest to her shoulder to her neck our vet said she was 4 lbs underweight she weighed only 13lbs her ribs you could count her spine and hips visible her legs were only skin and bone her stomach was concave and she flinched as if she had been beaten. When we got home she was afraid to enter the house she would not jump up on the furniture and in our house my motto is if my animals my pets or my babies cannot enjoy the furniture then it has no place in my house it is useless then out it goes. So we lifted her up to sit with us she was uneasy so we thought maybe enjoy a beautiful calm relaxing walk we have a nice neighborhood and a nature trail around the block as well..as we put on her leash she did not know what we were doing she was so fearful we reassured her and both my daughter and i took the time she needed to calm herself with our soft words and sitting next to her and reassuring her she began to relax but still it was quite clear that walking on a leash had only lead to being taken to the shelter then the vet then a long car ride then into this new owner strangers house now where are we going oh my goodness...we were so overwhelmed by her willingness to trust here she was ribs and hip bones tiny thin face a twig branch for a tail but it was wagging so fast she would jump 3 ft in the air at us every time she looked up at us she would jump and be so excited we picked her up she hugged us she hugged me and here we are in the middle of our walk stopped on the sidewalk hugging KoniKa and my daughter and i hugging and crying crying at the forgiveness to trust another human being after being so abused so abandoned so betrayed..i mean is there anything more evil than intentional harm to the helpless defenseless?! There is a special place in hell my great grandmother used to say a special level tailored perfectly fitting so that on that day without a doubt they will fully reap all that they have sown. I love my little Italian Greyhound mix wish i knew what she was mixed with but she looks alot like the Simpsons dog Santas little Helper and recently she has gotten dark stripe down her spibe
Yes, there is a gene that Italian Greyhound breeders check for before breeding a dog. some IG's have very soft enamel which causes many problems. also the IG bred down from the Greyhound frequently has dental problems. Are your dogs Italian Greyhounds? Thank you, Joyce
My iggy always barks and snaps at other dogs while on the lead so everyone sees him as a aggressive small dog 😢it’s also very sad as when he goes to italian greyhound meet ups to socialise him he doesn’t quite bark but hides from them
It sounds like he barks on walks because he is unsure of the dog. Also at the IG meetups there are lots of dogs. He is overwhelmed. Here is how you may help him . When 2 dogs walk close to each other walking the same direction, it is calming for both dogs. Do you have a friend with a. IG that will go for a walk with their dog and you and your dog in a quiet place. Just walk straight for a distance and then turn around and walk back to where you started. In the beginning, put the dogs on the outside and people in the middle as barriers. Try to choose a dog that is calm and will not jump in your dog. As you walk stop and let them sniff and continue walking. Just a quick sniff. As you walk, you want both dogs to relax and sniff each other. This is how I introduce 2 dogs who have never met. In time your dog will start to relax . Hope this helps. Your puppy needs to build confidence. Was your dog ever attacked or hurt or jumped by another dog. Fear will cause a dog to look aggressive. If you need help, you can contact a positive trainer in your area. It takes time to help a frightened dog to accept being close to another dog. Distance from the dog, lots of good food and short times your dog sees the dog are essential. Let me know how you are doing . Joyce
@@DiamondDogTraining When he was a puppy the lead broke after a big dog was barking at him and he ran and thought the big dog was chasing him 🥺He was so scared and sadly had a bit of a accident, i think that’s where his fear comes from. He ran for miles.
@@christmassoonxx. Yes, that may be the reason he is so afraid of dogs. He has good reason. Do you have a positive professional trainer that can help you. You need to start so far away from the dog and position yourself do the dog is walking perpendicular to your dog and not coming toward you. Start with chicken or cheese and just sit or stand and feed your dog as the dog is passing . The dog should pass no closer than 30-40 feet. There are so many things you can do to help your puppy. Have you searched for a positive trainer .
There is not the slightest drawback to have an Italian greyhound. A vet will confirm. It is not a chore to take care of a pet you loooove . 😊 here, the dog has tears in his eyes while hearing what you have said … before your conclusion.
I love everything about an Italian Greyhound. My dogs are the love of my life. But, I believe I owe it to the breed to inform a person before they get an IG. So later they cannot say they did not know about the difficulties like potty training and teeth etc. The person should be well informed so they can make an informed decision. When they get an Italian Greyhound, I want that person to know everything about the breed and still makes the decision to get an IG . Then we know that IG will have a home forever and not end up in rescue . Thank you for your comment. Joyce
My husband owns an Italian greyhound mix with a beagle. My husband has his hand full with his Italian greyhound mix. She will not come when you call her name and Will not stay when you tell her to stay.
Greyhound and Beagle both breeds bred to run. Possible your dog will always be on a long leash to prevent her running away. Check out my videos on teaching a puppy to come every time you call them. you will see I start with the long leash and when the puppy is coming every time i switch to a piece of rope i can cut into pieces. hope this helps to teach the puppy to come. Stay is a process. Start teaching stay without moving and increase the time before you move. Always release when you want the dog to move and then repeat. hope this helps, let me know how you are doing. joyce
It seems like all smallish dogs have teeth problems. I always had border collies my whole life and I never had any teeth problems with that breed. But I'm older now and I want smaller dog.
Yes, small dogs have many more teeth problems than a border collie. We have To brush teeth and take care of them. Any small or miniaturized breed. Small terriers may not have as many teeth problems. Thank you. Joyce
Man, Italian Greyhounds "sell" themselves like shrewd used-car salesman. I feel like people think I am actively trying to dissuade them from getting an IG when they meet my dog. I'm just trying to be real with them. I love the breed too. They definitely are not for everybody. And they'll never tell you that themselves.
Agreed, We have to make sure a person knows all the drawbacks before they get an IG. We owe it to our breed. It takes a special person to live with an IG. Thank you for your comment. Joyce
I am not an expert like Joyce, but I have had an Iggy before and he did the same thing. He would lie on his back and pee on himself. I did some research on it and apparently it’s a sign of submission.
I don’t have an Italian greyhound but I am considering getting one in the future. Currently I have a toy poodle. Sadly I didn’t head the warning about brushing her teeth. So now she only has two. The rest were removed by the vet. So, I am not sure it would matter what dog I got next I would brush their teeth. My poodle likes to wear clothes in the winter too. I love my little poodle but I am not sure I would want to get another poodle when she is gone as I think I would feel like I was replacing her instead of bringing in a new member of the family.
Yes, it is important. Some people only brush once or twice a week, but I try to brush more often to help them keep their teeth longer. What type of dog did you get. Thank you. Joyce.
Honestly, the only piece of advice I agree with in this entire video is the hot and cold sensitivity part. You will know though because your dog will likely whine and tell you they are cold. Our dog limps around if it is too cold and barks a bit. That's when we know it's time for winter boots/slippers. Literally everything else seems like overkill to the max. We have brushed her teeth 2-3 times and we have never had a broken leg despite her jumping. I do think that an Italian greyhound will likely have sensitive pawpads which can be tedious and annoying to bandage and treat. They don't like things on their feet, so they will pry them off at every opportunity if you bandage them up. Skin sensitivity - YES Most everything else? No. For us, at least. Your mileage may vary.
I am happy you have never had to deal with a leg break or soft enamel which causes the gum disease and loss of teeth. The video was to tell people the many problems that may happen with an IG. Thank you. Joyce

I try to avoid dentals as much as possible. I find brushing daily and adding Healthy Mouth liquid to their food helps keep their teeth clean of tarter. Thank you . Joyce
So sorry you lost your wonderful dog. We never have them long enough. Thank you. Joyce
Joyce
18! Wow! Mine lived 12.. had tumor. I miss my best friend! 😢
@@hart316 Mine did too but it was easy to remove fortunately
Good video; clear, concise, informative, good speaker with personality and nicely edited.
Thank you so much for your comment.
I am seriously considering an IGGY for my next dog....and this has been very instructive.
Hi Michael. i am glad the video was helpful. Do you have any questions?
Is this being in my recommend the internet’s way of telling me I watch too much Jenna Marbles?
Same.
I like Jenna Marbles. I am happy my channel was recommended. Maybe you can find some information about IG's on my channel which is helpful.
Shhhh.
Italian Greyhounds are a best kept secret. Let everyone else have their Yorkies and Bulldogs. 😊
I love Italian Greyhounds. Everything about them
I agree
My Iggy is a 8 months old male and has a four year old German Shepherd sister and they are best buddies. They do everything together. This is my first iggy, but I think I’ll always have one after Loki. He’s so smart and cuddly. He’s surprisingly been pretty easy to house train as well.
Hi Ashley, I feel the same way. I will always have an Iggy in my life. Thank you for your comment. Joyce
Excellent! Look forward to watching and learning more from you. Your baby is a Beauty! 💖
Thank you so much! I love her so much. Check out more of my videos about Italian Greyhounds. If you have any questions, please leave a comment. Do you have an IG.
Thank you. Joyce
What a beautiful doggie🥰 Thanks for this great video😘
You are so kind. I will tell Nicky. She is a sweetheart. Do you have an Italian Greyhound or are you thinking of getting an IG. I would love to know more about your dog. Thank you
Joyce
Damn that is some indepth knowledge. Amazing.
40 years of living with Italian Greyhounds. do you have any more questions. joyce
So informative! Especially about finding the right vets.
Good vets are extremely hard to find. Look for old Vets, they seem to be more knowledgeable and more experienced.
So glad the video helped . Thank you. Joyce
Shovelling a path through the snow in your backyard is totally a thing I wish I had learned sooner. So is a 300$ bespoke winter snowsuit with boots if you have very cold winters.
We all learn . I am glad this video gave you some information
Very helpful and informative video, this is great, thank you!
glad to help
Thank you for this informative video.
Thank you, i am glad the video was helpful. Do you have any questions. Are you planning on getting an IG or do you already have one?
I am smiling . Thank you so much for your wonderful comment. Joyce
Thank you,
Joyce
Very informative, my fiancé and I decided to get a Whippet instead for our first dog together. We will consider and iggy once we have our own home.
I am glad the video was helpful to answer your questions. Thank you. Joyce
Thank you so much!
I am glad the video helped you. Did you decide to get an Italian Greyhound. Thank you . Joyce
Thank you . Joyce
Hey 👋, I'm considering getting iggy as my next dog. Thanks for your video! I should try brushing my current dogs teeth on daily basis 😬.
Also can I brush my dog teeth with human electronic brush?
I would use a soft toothbrush
Glad it was helpful!
Iggies are the best!
I totally agree. Tell me about your Iggy.
Enjoyed your videos with Nello, especially the dog park with a beer/pretzel garden. Need one locally for sure.
Thank you for the informative video. I used to love running with my border collie when I was a kid. Can I take an IG for a long run, like 5km?
IG's like to sprint and run fast and gallop for shorter stretches and then stop. Just like the larger greyhound. They don't like to run for a long distance like 3 or more miles.
I love the statue in the back! Where did you purchase? :)
It was a gift
My iggy is 3 and I love him more than anything in this world
Me too!!!!
Thank you for telling us about your dog. So cuddly . The greatest . Joyce
His mouth bleeds, as his gums get crushed in spots.
have you tried having him wear a thundershirt to keep him calm when you are walking
@@DiamondDogTraining No, but I’ve discovered Ruffwear harnesses, so we should be good now. Thank you.
Get two and let them play outside!
Thank.
you are welcome.
We have a whippet at the moment and I'm thinking of adding a second dog, perhaps an Iggy.
Iggy’s are the best in my mind. Let me know if you have any questions.
@@DiamondDogTraining Thank you very much. I will do that as I am starting two years out from actually bringing a new pup into our home. We love our whippet girl and sighthounds in general across the board. An iggy would be a lovely addition to our family.
Hello! I have an iggy and I love the stress you put on dental care. Also the anesthesia is a serious issue. How did it go for your lovely girl?
Ozzie is very lucky to have you. If you have any questions, please ask.
Can you train them well enough so they can walk off the lead??
They are sighthounds. They love to run. A fenced area is the best. There are some that naturally want to stay close and with lots of training, may be ok off leash . But you always need to be alert for the squirrel, rabbit chipmunk and be ready to grab the leash. Safety is always fenced area. Thank you . Joyce
Easily!
Joyce
My biggest concern is the bone breaks but I know it’s a matter of good supervision
Why does your dog look like it has the mumps on both sides? Is tgat normal or just the lighting?
video may be casting a shadow or that was filmed in 2021. We were all much heavier because of covid. check out the most recent videos . Thank you. Joyce and Nicky
I use a powder from algae in the food to prevent dental problems. It works and the need of dental cleaning at the vet becomes rare.
I started adding a product Healthymouth liquid to their meals and it is working great. I still brush their teeth but not as often as i did . not as frequent dentals. Thank you, Joyce
I have a 6 month old iggy and I’m obsessed so I have another coming in 3 weeks! I’m worried she will hate me for this
Give you puppy you have now lots of love and attention and treats when you are petting bathe new puppy. The 6 month is young enough they probably will be great friends. You will have 2 babies and twice the work and twice the fun. Let me know how you are doing. Thank you . Joyce
She will love the company but it might take some time to get acquainted 🙏
I don’t have any thoughts. Sorry.
There are Italian Greyhound and Chihuahua mix dogs. Greyhuahuas. My friend had one.
Daily brushing is not necassary if you give them a good diet and treats designed to clean teeth. My dog is 4, never had dental issues and has perfectly white teeth. I think I've brushed my dog's teeth maybe twice.
I am glad your IG does not have dental problems. Not all Italian Greyhounds are so fortunate. Thank you Joyce
I've never met a vet who didn't know how to anesthetize an IG. An IG properly exercised as a pup should have strength to endure what would cause a fracture. The biggest CON is cancers skittishness from over breeding!
Hi Francis, I am glad you have always worked with veterinarians who are knowledgeable about Italian Greyhound special needs. Joyce
Our vet is one of those rare vets who truly loves animals, and was born to be a vet. He had taken some time off when we had to get his teeth pulled. The young vet doing the surgery didn’t know about the proper anesthesia. I had to tell him, and ask him to research it.
I've been breeding IGs for 22 years and I have never had one get cancer yet. But we live on a farm and eat organic, have little to no EMF here either.
I am so happy for you and your little girl. What a wonderful life you two will have. Merry Christmas. Joyce
I’m so happy you found her.
God bless you and your beautiful little dog! 😍❤️😍
never had to brush the teeth of any of my dogs is it a problem of the diet or a genetic problem ?
Yes, there is a gene that Italian Greyhound breeders check for before breeding a dog. some IG's have very soft enamel which causes many problems. also the IG bred down from the Greyhound frequently has dental problems. Are your dogs Italian Greyhounds? Thank you, Joyce
I found giving my 12 yr old IG, wheat germ oil on a daily basis, stopped her seizures completely. One tablespoon per day
Thank you for your comment. Joyce
We have
To brush teeth and take care of them. Any small or miniaturized breed. Small terriers may not have as many teeth problems. Thank you.

I did some research on it and apparently it’s a sign of submission.
can be a sign of submission or even over excitement.
Sounds like an Italian Greyhound would be a great dog for you. thank you. Joyce
brushing teeth everyday for a dog .... convinced me to not ho and get a italian greyhound
Yes, it is important. Some people only brush once or twice a week, but I try to brush more often to help them keep their teeth longer. What type of dog did you get. Thank you. Joyce.
You talked me out of it.
I hope you find the perfect dog for you. Joyce
DENTAL is number one priority, period
I agree. Watch for a video very soon about dental care . Thank you . Joyce
Buy a larger size IG and you will have less dental issues. Tiny ones will have the most serious dental issues due to over crowding teeth.
Thank you. Joyce

Brush their teeth everyday? No just no.🤦♂️ weekly is MORE THAN ENOUGH!
I try to avoid dentals as much as possible. I find brushing daily and adding Healthy Mouth liquid to their food helps keep their teeth clean of tarter. Thank you . Joyce
Italian greyhound gatekeeper here
Hi, tell me more what you mean. Do you have an Italian Greyhound. Thank you for your comment. Joyce
