In the early Bowie years was actually Mick Ronson the genius behind most of David's work. As people admitted later he was so much more than a guitarist. David then later mastered his craft and became more prolific in writing, arranging and producing. Nobody can take it away from him, but M R was a major force on his early years.

Hardly - you cannot compare his voice to Freddie, or someone like George Michael - They were both a trillion times better than Bowie, vocally. If you cannot hear that, then you shouldn't be listening to music, and that's not an opinion.

      @@RelativeBadger Straight out bullshit !
George Michael is a STUNNING Singer because of his timbre and beautiful tone. But his Range itself wasnt even that special.
Bowies sheer vocal Range tops Freddies btw...
      Bowies Range: B1-Eb6
      Freddies: F2-D6
Get your facts straight next time you comment. Because this is no opinion. Its a fact. Bowie had a wider Vocal Range than George Michael and Freddie Mercury.
But its a matter of taste which voice/tone you like/prefer more tho.
Mercury may had a more powerful chest voice but he also wasnt perfect. Especially on live performances. He always avoided climatic high notes and lowered the key of the songs.

Just watched the doc "1971 the year that music changed everything" when Bowie wasn't Bowie yet and he played Glastonbury when it was just a Pyramid stage and a smaller field. He went up on stage at about 5:30 am and started singing the bones of what would become "Changes." Then, hanging out in New York with Lou Reed and Warhol he knew he was about to transform into the Ziggy. Then he did and it was brilliant. He said after that first show, "Oh my god, I think we just killed the 60s."

He is the very best of everything. So much drama and passion, enough for a life time indeed. Had the entire audience totally and completely captivated though the entire song. He will live on in our hearts for years to come and continuing to influence todays artists. There will never be another like him. Cheer's to you, David, rest in peace my brother.

    • @timweatherill3738

~ Holly, I think it is because David, through all his guises and eventually his most naked and visceral periods, always let us see something of the man behind the masks; he was a peculiar kind of chameleon, one that let you see his shape. To put it more clearly, perhaps, Bowie gave us more of his real personality than he ever let on. He was a tremendously important figure in 20thC early 21stC culture. I miss him terribly.
