I remember when Philip answered me about 6 years ago, on a comment about performance anxiety in CS, you know, hands getting cold, being unable to aim properly and so on...

TH-cam has been a large portion of my growing up, I understand that I have no real connection with the people I watch but I've gotten through many hard times in my life watching TH-camr's like yourself. I've kept a daily journal for quite a while now, always with the intention to preserve the details of life that I could easily forget, not too dissimilar to your coronavirus updates. To make a long story short I wrote in an entry around my 18th birthday, "reach out to kliksphilip when you're much older, he's definitely the kind of guy to respond and reminisce about old times" and I meant and believe that genuinely. Not that it's an expectation or I would be offended if you wanted to leave TH-cam behind for good in the future. But from what I can gather through the interaction that is the internet, you're someone I would love to meet someday, or at least chat with 20, 30, 40 years down the line.
Thanks for your content Philip, you've been one of the few who taught me to embrace the person I am and whether that was your intention or not, there's an extra piece of good you brought into the world.

So many people out there never bother to think from the other persons perspective. I very rarely ever send direct messages to my favorite online creators since I know I'm just one of many thousands of fans who would like to talk to them. I'd imagine on the receiving end it just becomes a monotonous and soul-sucking exercise to try and genuinely deliberate on every message you get. I could pour my heart out in a message of gratitude for the enjoyment I've gotten from them, but it's probably just one of many that they've received in that day alone. We watch and become accustomed to our favorite creators as if they were close friends, but it definitely isn't a two-way street and more people need to understand and accept that.

I remember when I was about 14, I played a game on the PSP called Killzone: Liberation. I loved that game, and I imagined hundreds of possible expansions that could be made to the game. I was convinced that if the devs could hear my ideas, they would love them, and immediately start working on implementing them for a future DLC, or something. I even drew up blue prints for new maps, and wrote stories for new campaigns. I found the official forums for the company that developed the game, and I spent hours compiling a large portion of my ideas into a massive post. I don't remember exactly how many responses I got, but it wasn't very many, and I don't think a single dev ever replied. It was a wake up call, which I didn't fully understand at the time. I had a similar experience with various modding communities for PC games, such as the 2007 version of Star Wars Battlefront 2. It took longer than it should have for me to realize that people have their own lives, just as intricate, and detailed as my own. They have their own interests that they personally really want to work on. They have people that are important to them, that they want to stay close to. I am 1 person, and they have never met me. They won't be initially mean to me, but I am no more important to them, than a random stranger walking down the street who says "Hello". And that's just how life is. And that's okay.

    • @LeafMaltieze
      @LeafMaltieze 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@kliksphilip It's true that the perspective is never the same. The mind of child has little to no concept of the limitations you face when developing a real game. Anything can be possible, and the logistics don't matter, because it will just work exactly the way you think it will. All the time I spent thinking of ideas for games as a kid, I think it has made me better at recognizing the flaws in my own ideas. I can think of how great something will be, and also recognize that some of the aspects of that idea, wouldn't be popular with certain people. Even as I get older, I am repeatedly reminded, that the perspectives I have, and the way that I enjoy many things, is distinctly different than the way that everyone, or even most people will see, and enjoy that same thing. It is remarkable how differently people can experience the exact same things. How the tiniest details can mean so much to one person, and so little to the next. Fully understanding how each little thing will be interpreted is nigh impossible. You can only try to keep it enjoyable for most people, and hope that most of the ideas you are trying to convey are understood. At the end of the day, you are only 1 person, and you can only do so much with the time that you have.

It's one of the funny things about online messaging. In the real world, we say so much stuff, but most of it is gone within moments, only remaining in our mind's memory. But online, even the most mundane message could linger for years on end. So trying to act as if social media is equivalent to real life communication leads to a massive amount of "empty content", or messages that will hold little meaning after even a few hours. Of course, that isn't as much a thing on TH-cam or Reddit as it is on something like Instagram, but there is still at least a bit of it here. It's part of why I usually don't comment on videos, like, I watch probably 30+ videos a day, but I comment on maybe 1 or 2 of them, and even then, it still feels like I'm sometimes just speaking meaninglessly, and just wasting the time of the people who came to the comment section to look for comments that actually contribute something to the conversation. I like to think that I avoid forming parasocial relationships, even with the creators I watch a lot, but its something that I find difficult to analyze myself, and so I just avoid making comments altogether usually.
Your attitude towards TH-cam comments reminds me of FrameWhisperer, a Tekken 7 youtuber. He's pretty cynical and sarcastic (not necessarily in his mannerisms or tone, but in the message he delivers), but has a relatively serene and laid back comments section. He is somewhat reclusive, as he doesn't have any social media (he's only on TH-cam and Twitch), so the only time you see him is when he sometimes appears in other Tekken content creators' channels (such as the Blasted Salami), and he is the only TH-camr I know who isn't on at least some sort of social media. It gives his channel a mysterious quality, like I'm in some hidden alleyway that no one else knows about, looking for a small corner shop that only a select few can find. It's a feeling I don't get from any of the other 400+ channels I'm subscribed to, and one that I'm sure isn't felt too often in this day and age of interconnection. It's kinda like how Valve are very mysterious in their ways, and only those who have been on the inside can really understand what's going on in the surface.
Now, I'm rambling, but it was all to say that your channels also exude that kind of mystery, like there's more beneath the surface than what I see in front of me, and I find that delightfully fascinating. (Sorry if that sounded creepy, but I just didn't know how to word it)

As much as I think it'd be awesome to have a content creator be super involved with their community (like, responding to (all) yt comments or extensively using reddit) can be cool, but its also an additional workload that might not get any return. It's time spent on work (the online persona, for lack of a better term) that yields nothing. No video to upload and get money from, no working with companies for sponsorships. Nothing.
While I don't produce content myself, I volunteer and help in several groups on Telegram and its agonizing how people still PM me for support when there are support groups for exactly what they need. I even have a PM=Block in my name there, but it doesn't help much lol. I can imagine the frustration that comes from trying to "open up" on social media towards fans (like, opening inbox is what I mean) and have it ruined by people who can't take a no or who just spam their message on all kinds of different platforms.
I've often checked on what content creators business emails are (behind that captcha button), but never sent anything there. It's a business email and I don't have any business to offer.
If I'm not mistaken you still read (almost?) all comments so I'm sure you're eventually coming across this comment. But by no means are you obligated to comment back, or heart it.
I'm starting to struggle for words lmao. If you see this and don't want to comment, no pressure :D Heart's appreciated so I know you've read this, but you're by no means obligated to.
    Have a nice Sunday! ~Colin

When a youtuber responds its a blessing in its own, yes it can be a lot from the creators perspective. But most dont even acknowledge their channel comments anymore. So if philip ever responds to me, which sometimes he does, i do appreciate it. As does everyone. Their should never be a need to spam and or email philip. Some just have no respect and its embarrassing what people are willing to do. Sadly, at the end of the day, thanks for taking time and reading. Whether or not you respond is your choice ofc.

When your content is about deeper thoughts then you will inevitably get more comments than some "try not to laugh video". I assume that most people dont expect a response either, however im quite sure you are an idol for many and thus you acknowledging them give them great joy. There are also trolls and haters that will do just anything to ruin your day. All of that is inevitable with community growth. At some point there is no way you will be able to keep up with everything, imagine millions of people wanting your attention, its just not possible. Honestly im suprised that you managed to even get around with this many comments. So good on you Philip, thats what I like about you, the effort you put into your work.

Sadly it's just what celebrities have to deal with. Weird to think 3kliks is a celeb but it is what it is. At least there isn't a stan culture for 3kliks or something lol
some creators are in a weird place where they seem to be super popular but not get any messages. I wonder how that happens. I guess the less public you are with methods for establishing contact, the better the messages you get will be, since it means the only messages you'll get are ones that require someone to hunt you down for some burning thing they just have to say. But that still barely seems like a solution. I dunno. Just luck I suppose. Or I'm misinterpreting stuff and all massively popular creators just get spammed equally, but some are less vocal about it.
I guess there's also the creators with a patreon who only fully interact with their supporters. That seems like a manageable solution but if I was a creator I'd hate to do that, I don't want to sell interaction with someone as a product. That's just weird to me. As a concept it's fine though, especially if it's incidental that you just reply to comments on patreon posts more than any other platform.
sorry to anyone reading this mega long comment I just went on a random brain tangent and it spilled into text :c

Let me tell you my vision about it, and why maybe the best response to the hundreds of messages is not answering them . A TH-camr or Instagrammer or anything of this type has a very weird relationship with their viewers, for the TH-camr, it's just another viewer amidst thousands ( or millions ! ), for the viewer is that friendly girl/guy they see every video and post, it almost feels like a personal friend . ( This applies to me too ) . But the thing is that, it just feels like a personal friend, it seems, maybe its just for me, but, it seems that we, the viewers sort of know of this weird relationship, and when they message their favorite youtuber, they are not truly expecting a response, its something idealized, platonic . It's like the troubadour in the middle ages writing a poem to his loved one, one who is idealized and unreachable ( it's actually almost unreal, you are from another continent in my perspective, it almost doesn't feel like you truly exist ) . The moment you answer the message it breaks this unreachable platonic line, and for the one who wrote that loving message hoping you would never answer gets so excited that it DEMANDS a immediate answer, which, of course, if it has thousands of them, its just impossible to do .
I recommend you answering only the ones who are really, really worth answering ( which it may still be a hole lot ) .
English is not my native English so i apologize for the confusing state of the text .
By the way, ironically, i really hope you read this, i did put a lot of effort in writing and reflecting about this issue

Could you make a video on mapping in other games? Rust has a big mapping scene and it'd be interesting to see you compare these maps with the ones that are being made in CS:GO today, for example what similarities there are. I think people would be interested to hear your thoughts on it and the videos might even rack up some views considering there's already an interest in mapping from your viewers.
