My stance on react channels: I know I can't stop them, and I appreciate that some of them are fans of my channel, and I'm fine with them showing clips of my videos that they think are relevant but blanket-watching my content just after my video's release is bad for my own channel and I'd prefer it if they don't make a habit of doing that. As an example of what's fine: the way Ohnepixel streamed this kliksphilip video was good, where he skipped to the relevant part talking about react channels. That makes sense, and he reacted to it. I don't mind streamers reacting to older content of mine in full either, once the original video has had time to gain traction. Hopefully that clears it up, this kliksphilip video wasn't intended to upset anybody but I needed to get my thoughts on it out.
I often love watching react content, but at the same time feel a guilt along with it. I didn't really think about *when* mattering when it comes to how it effects the original, but now that I think about it, If it was standard to watch videos maybe a week (or more, I'm not really sure of the ideal time) after they release it could actually possibly even do good for the channel.
Do you have the data to demonstrate the harm reactors do? It would be really helpful to have such data available to counter the "show me the harm" argument.

Hey Phil, one suggestion for how you could signify that a video is a short segment or a longer length video that encompasses the mini-segments: the thumbnail. You could experiment with having a specific border style or color, or maybe an icon like what other creators do with their thumbnails. That way your long-time viewers like me can know which videos belong to which category.
im not sure about this idea. it would probably solve the confusion over time but i feel like those shorter videos will have an association with them of being lower tier and it might harm their success

Another perk with shorter videos: the video covering the destruction on office has a detailed timestamp of each item being tested, which I wouldn't be able to add to the full video's timestamps which require broader, longer parts of the video to be timestamped instead.
The fact that you didn't push notifications on those shorter videos shows the thought you're putting into it- I definitely agree with the thumbnail-banner suggestions, to make it easy to tell if it's going to be included in another video.
I really liked the fire extinguisher video since it was long enough to fill as a 'classic' kliksphillip vid, but the ones for Nuke were cut into too short of segments to enjoy so I just watched the full one. I think this is also a part of why it got so many views compared to the others
That fire extinguisher is a half-video idea stretched up to a whole video of content, and is all the better for it imo. Forces me to be more creative, imaginative and to dive deeper into a topic than I would have done otherwise.

@@kliksphilip Yeah picking a detail up in CSGO then deep diving into it has been the basis of 3kliks content so I reckon it's what most subscribers would expect to see. Source engine has years of history and CSGO's community is full of lore. Definitely lots to dig into, it's just about picking a starting point that can be led into other areas you wouldn't include in the context of an update analysis. I do wonder how things would take with a more spontaneous video approach? Clicking on something about a fire extinguisher and learning about lighting, prior limitations of source, reflections, and all the other quibbles definitely felt more interesting than expected.
I like the previews that are one chapter of upcoming longer videos. It's similar to a podcast like teasers of what's upcoming and it still means each part is a fresh bit of content. Edit: The more I think about it the more I realize this whole idea is genius. Each video is like a bunch of mini high quality videos in a bundle. It lets you spend more time on the content to make it higher quality while still producing high quantity for the algorithm. As long as they stay successful this is the future of this channel and paving the way for others

yeah, i know philip expressed his frustrations with clips *AFTER* the video and i have to agree; like with the nuke video. its disappointing to see a new video only for it to be a snippet i've already seen, and it handicapped both the main video's and the short's analytics. but snippets *BEFORE* the main video, like with the office video? its pretty neat, i like getting a taste of an upcoming big kliksphilip video before its out. i feel like i'm getting patreon teasers for free lol i just hope it isn't wrecking the channel in the algorithm, i know hosting large quality videos interspersed with little daily uploads on one channel usually isn't favorable.
Concerning everyone who's suggesting a "thumbnail border", do be careful with these. Many creators forget that YT puts a red "progress bar" beneath previously-watched videos. This bar DOES overlap the thumbnail, rather than fitting beneath it. You'd either have to include a buffer along the bottom of some sort (i.e.: the bottom border thicker to accommodate the progress bar), or just do the ribbon-style suggestion that would wrap across a corner of the thumbnail instead. Oh and don't do the bottom-right corner, because the duration is located there. You'd think I'm just being a smartass, but even Kyle Hill just uploaded a video with a thumbnail that says "SURVIVING THE [Hidden by Duration]". There really is a science to this shit.
Consideration: Highlighting the corner where the duration is will make it just barely visible enough to notice but not obstructive to the usable space.
I can respect clowning on reaction channels, it really is harmful to the platform. I personally greatly appreciate your insistence on still making longer, high quality videos, even when it isn't what the platform really promotes that much anymore. It's much better for the viewer.
I have been a longtime viewer from 2016 & beyond. Your videos have been a great source comfort in my greatest & darkest times as I'm sure many viewers can relate too. Having watched you for so long, I am imagine you are the kind of warm hearted person that simply does not want to take money from your viewers for nothing in return, & even less likely to pay walll content. Reguardless it would be very benefical as I'm sure 100's of fans would offer money for nothing in return but to help support you & your channel. You do a wounderful job & its unlikely youtube will ever pay you a fair wage, let alone the low balling & react channels not helping matter.

As some people pointed out, some of your viewers don't really care about CS that much. I personally think the best content you ever produced is How to be like me. If you had good income from the Patreon maybe you could make polls there for what type of content to produce... I imagine this would be a win-win for both you and the fans.
DarkViperAU makes a great series of videos outlining the criminal-like activity that react channels engage in. If you haven't seen it, I suggest having a peak. Regardless, as you grow bigger, you'll have less opportunity to change and experiment and many people here trust and respect your video making decisions.
Since they have interacted a few times, i think it's safe to assume he knows about those videos. And going by the way he speaks about reactors in this video, he has seen them or at least agrees with them.

Some randoms react videos will be forgotten in probably two months. Your contributions Phil are a literal archive. For example, I came back to a video you did about sound equalization to protect your hearing multiple times.
PLAYLISTS, PLAYLISTS, PLAYLISTS!! They're a fine way to organize your videos in a way that makes it easy for your viewers to binge on a specific theme of your videos in order as if they were one long video. I watch every video you put out anyways so it won't matter to me as much, though it would help if I want to quickly narrow my search if I ever want to find a specific video to share with a fellow gamer. I use the playlist tab quite often when browsing a new interesting channel because I'm almost always more interested in a specific section of a channel's library of content rather than just any random video the channel uploads.

It sounds like you've watched it already, but since you didn't mention it directly: there is this series of videos by DarkViperAU explaining in depth why reaction content is bad for the TH-cam ecosystem. They are a bit long and repetitive, but a good watch nonetheless.
You are genuinely the only content creator I will watch willingly from start to finish, and not feel burdened or have interest waning. Keep doing you man, whatever works, works.

Even though I don't play CS & have very limited interest in it, you format your videos so well that it becomes interesting to watch and keep up with the new technology they release! Keep it up! Honestly I love this new format. Always love your videos and the tiny details you go into, so getting more of that drip fed regularly instead of just binging it all in a single sitting spreads out the enjoyment! Also great because I’ve definitely run into issues before where your infrequent uploads mean that missing a single video makes the algorithm stop recommending your stuff which this solves nicely
I've commented this in the main video, but I'll do it here as well: your editing, scripting and content style is surprisingly well suited for segmenting bigger videos into small ones or vice versa. Your shorts, for example, feel like normal, 60 seconds or less videos.
i really appreciate you for disabling the subscriber notifications for the short form factor videos. i'm pretty sure i've seen the majority of them through the youtube recommended page but i'm here for your brother's long-form analysis content. no shame in adjusting for the modern attention span though

I like this approach. I only got the notification for the New Office video (as intended) but once I'd been told you'd released new videos, I went to your channel to see if there were any I missed. So I watch the one that gives me the notification first, and all the little treats after. Whichever way round it works, it seems to be working! Keep it up!
I have never played CS before, but an familiar with its community/ love valve games. I mostly watch your videos because I love how you talk about stuff, whether i know that much about it or not. Even if you posted a "new nuke" video in a year from now, I'll still be watching it all.
ngl, the distributed dripfeed as you go about analyzing the new maps day by day isn't a bad format at all. And it aligns well with my opinion on social media platforms. Currently there is no cost to submitting multiple posts to a feed and doing so hogs more of its surface area to yourself regardless of how much content is behind the thumbnail. I think it's smart to take advantage of this since you do have quality content to back it up.
A lot of people upload shorts AFTER the main video has been uploaded already. And that was going to be my way of doing things since I'm starting to make videos... But your approach makes so much more sense actually! Although I do agree the way they implemented shorts feels clunky and out of place, I can still see the potential

I'd always have the biggest video released last as it's the most recent video on the channel that gains the most publicity. Plus I hate it showing me stats for the most recent video when it's some half arsed short I made of the main video :p

First of all, 1:12 I love how 5 Minutes With Phil is becoming a recurring (and utterly dank) reference. Secondly, I would actually really like more frequent 3kliksphilip content (or 2kliksphilip, or kliksphilip), so I would like having notifications on the smaller videos. On the other hand, I am somewhat ambivalent about watching a video, like the Office one, and finding out I've already watched about half of it. On the other other hand, it does make a 20 minute video more palatable if segments are already familiar, like listening to an album when you already know some of the songs, for instance. I am quite excited to see what goes on with 2kliksphilip though.
I can understand wanting to rewatch a 45 second segment, but understand not wanting to rewatch the projector or destruction bits when they were already several minutes long. Was awesome for me when editing the main video to know those bits were already polished, though!

If it's a game you as a viewer already have played, you're just interested in their _reaction_ (yet far fewer people complain about game playthroughs than video reactions)

It feeds into the parasocial friendship I've built with you over the years. But I absolutely loved the idea of this communal discussion where you explained your plans and carried on with them. The main thing that's confusing is there being no way to tell between segmented videos and others. For example the fire extinguisher video isn't a part of your longer video on office, but it looks the same as the other short form videos taken from the long one
Im actually sad to see ive missed so many of your videos. i watch a lot if not most of your normal length ones but i also love the sillier more chaotic nature of some of your shorter videos.
When watching your new longer video, I almost clicked off because I thought I already watched it before when I started hearing content from the short-form segments. Kept watching, but it was still very noticable.
It's good to know that you make these full videos available afterwards because I've realised that I'm on the opposite site. For example: I don't care about Office skies. I'd never click that video (and also haven't) Not at all. But in a more complete video it feels more like an interesting tidbit than a lazy attention grab. The fire extinguisher was really interesting and based on the video length I knew you'd go more into detail and not just make a lazy before/after comparison. So in that sense I subconciously equate length with quality. To share my own perspective: I've clicked on the before/after video of Nuke when youtube recommended it and saw that it was a lazy montage. This made my brain go into defense mode, completely ignoring your next couple uploads no matter what they may have been. Even the full Nuke analysis video I hadn't watched until several days after the release. TH-cam has become so rotten over the years that I've developed this instant defense mechanism for low quality videos. And it was certainly triggered by your smaller uploads. Knowing how you approached this makes it easier to understand and I'm curious to see how this experiment works out in your next click empire analysis. I expect to be in the minority and for it to turn out positive. On the other hand that system means I'd never watch a short video from you ever again, even if it's standalone, because I'll just expect to click the longer and complete version. So keep that in mind as well.
Thanks, with TH-cam encouraging people to modify and to repurpose content I would imagine me making the interesting tidbits into shorter, shareable standalone videos would make some sense? I'll find a way of branding thumbnails to show if they're longs or shorts

I've been watching your content for upwards of 5 years now, which is crazy to think about. If fans are annoyed by your content, please know that you have at least one fan who is always excited to see your videos in my feed, regardless of what it is. The effort and quality in your videos does not go underappreciated here! Sometimes people are just going to complain. Upload a bunch of bite sized stuff: you upload too much! Put a lot of time into one video and there's a gap in your upload schedule: you upload too little! I think its important to remember the human side of this kind of production. You are one person, you're doing your best, playing the game under the same rules and everyone else. You probably can't say it in your video but my one thought is this: fuck em, you know you make good content, your fans know you make good content, and judging by the fact that you've remained relevant in all the time *I've* been watching your content, it seems to me like its working. The only reason I've ever intentionally skipped a video of yours is because it was about GPU stuff I don't understand or its the transphobic hogwarts game that I don't care to hear your stance on, I presume you aren't transphobic. I sure hope you aren't! But my point is that it wasn't because of you, and I'm positive that if I could stand the topic I would be entertained by those videos. You have some real talent with this stuff and it's been a joy to watch over all this time, so I guess this comment is me saying thank you, and I hope this comment finds you well.
I know there's probably only a small group that do what I do, but when it comes to informative content that I'm personally interested in I always watch the original video first. I love to get the information how its meant to be received and with its intended pacing, especially when it comes to creators like yourself. And then afterwards I might watch a few reactions from people that I'm familiar with and that might have context or points to add to it. With that said, no matter what changes you feel you need to make, whether its for creative or engagement reasons, I'll always be happy to see you've uploaded a new video for me and everyone else to watch and enjoy, and I'll always be secretly hoping for another story time from your old CS clan days.
I personally enjoy how each segment basically has its own video but extended allowing you to freely explain and go on about how cool something is or bad it is etc regardless take care of yourself good sir

I only watch Sir Philip's content for the music at 4:52. It gives me some nostalgic-depressed-fatalistic vibes. Always get a tear in my eye when I hear it.
I have the same issue with this as I have with the great ' Scott Prop and Roll' channel, when so much in my sub box is repackaged from other videos as a snippet or YT Short it becomes really hard to work out which videos are actually new stuff I haven't seen before. It kills my enthusiasm a little to watch if I immediately realise I've seen it already. Branding may help as someone else has suggested.

I do wonder how things would take with a more spontaneous video approach? Clicking on something about a fire extinguisher and learning about lighting, prior limitations of source, reflections, and all the other quibbles definitely felt more interesting than expected.
I like the previews that are one chapter of upcoming longer videos. It's similar to a podcast like teasers of what's upcoming and it still means each part is a fresh bit of content.
Edit: The more I think about it the more I realize this whole idea is genius. Each video is like a bunch of mini high quality videos in a bundle. It lets you spend more time on the content to make it higher quality while still producing high quantity for the algorithm. As long as they stay successful this is the future of this channel and paving the way for others

yeah, i know philip expressed his frustrations with clips *AFTER* the video and i have to agree; like with the nuke video. its disappointing to see a new video only for it to be a snippet i've already seen, and it handicapped both the main video's and the short's analytics.
but snippets *BEFORE* the main video, like with the office video? its pretty neat, i like getting a taste of an upcoming big kliksphilip video before its out. i feel like i'm getting patreon teasers for free lol
i just hope it isn't wrecking the channel in the algorithm, i know hosting large quality videos interspersed with little daily uploads on one channel usually isn't favorable.
Concerning everyone who's suggesting a "thumbnail border", do be careful with these. Many creators forget that YT puts a red "progress bar" beneath previously-watched videos. This bar DOES overlap the thumbnail, rather than fitting beneath it. You'd either have to include a buffer along the bottom of some sort (i.e.: the bottom border thicker to accommodate the progress bar), or just do the ribbon-style suggestion that would wrap across a corner of the thumbnail instead. Oh and don't do the bottom-right corner, because the duration is located there. You'd think I'm just being a smartass, but even Kyle Hill just uploaded a video with a thumbnail that says "SURVIVING THE [Hidden by Duration]". There really is a science to this shit.

Having watched you for so long, I am imagine you are the kind of warm hearted person that simply does not want to take money from your viewers for nothing in return, & even less likely to pay walll content.
Reguardless it would be very benefical as I'm sure 100's of fans would offer money for nothing in return but to help support you & your channel. You do a wounderful job & its unlikely youtube will ever pay you a fair wage, let alone the low balling & react channels not helping matter.

As some people pointed out, some of your viewers don't really care about CS that much. I personally think the best content you ever produced is How to be like me. If you had good income from the Patreon maybe you could make polls there for what type of content to produce... I imagine this would be a win-win for both you and the fans.
DarkViperAU makes a great series of videos outlining the criminal-like activity that react channels engage in. If you haven't seen it, I suggest having a peak. Regardless, as you grow bigger, you'll have less opportunity to change and experiment and many people here trust and respect your video making decisions.
Since they have interacted a few times, i think it's safe to assume he knows about those videos. And going by the way he speaks about reactors in this video, he has seen them or at least agrees with them.

They're a fine way to organize your videos in a way that makes it easy for your viewers to binge on a specific theme of your videos in order as if they were one long video.
I watch every video you put out anyways so it won't matter to me as much, though it would help if I want to quickly narrow my search if I ever want to find a specific video to share with a fellow gamer.
I use the playlist tab quite often when browsing a new interesting channel because I'm almost always more interested in a specific section of a channel's library of content rather than just any random video the channel uploads.

Honestly I love this new format. Always love your videos and the tiny details you go into, so getting more of that drip fed regularly instead of just binging it all in a single sitting spreads out the enjoyment! Also great because I’ve definitely run into issues before where your infrequent uploads mean that missing a single video makes the algorithm stop recommending your stuff which this solves nicely
I've commented this in the main video, but I'll do it here as well: your editing, scripting and content style is surprisingly well suited for segmenting bigger videos into small ones or vice versa. Your shorts, for example, feel like normal, 60 seconds or less videos.
i really appreciate you for disabling the subscriber notifications for the short form factor videos. i'm pretty sure i've seen the majority of them through the youtube recommended page but i'm here for your brother's long-form analysis content. no shame in adjusting for the modern attention span though

I like this approach. I only got the notification for the New Office video (as intended) but once I'd been told you'd released new videos, I went to your channel to see if there were any I missed. So I watch the one that gives me the notification first, and all the little treats after. Whichever way round it works, it seems to be working! Keep it up!
I have never played CS before, but an familiar with its community/ love valve games. I mostly watch your videos because I love how you talk about stuff, whether i know that much about it or not. Even if you posted a "new nuke" video in a year from now, I'll still be watching it all.
ngl, the distributed dripfeed as you go about analyzing the new maps day by day isn't a bad format at all. And it aligns well with my opinion on social media platforms. Currently there is no cost to submitting multiple posts to a feed and doing so hogs more of its surface area to yourself regardless of how much content is behind the thumbnail. I think it's smart to take advantage of this since you do have quality content to back it up.
A lot of people upload shorts AFTER the main video has been uploaded already. And that was going to be my way of doing things since I'm starting to make videos...
But your approach makes so much more sense actually!

I'd always have the biggest video released last as it's the most recent video on the channel that gains the most publicity. Plus I hate it showing me stats for the most recent video when it's some half arsed short I made of the main video :p

First of all, 1:12 I love how 5 Minutes With Phil is becoming a recurring (and utterly dank) reference. Secondly, I would actually really like more frequent 3kliksphilip content (or 2kliksphilip, or kliksphilip), so I would like having notifications on the smaller videos. On the other hand, I am somewhat ambivalent about watching a video, like the Office one, and finding out I've already watched about half of it. On the other other hand, it does make a 20 minute video more palatable if segments are already familiar, like listening to an album when you already know some of the songs, for instance. I am quite excited to see what goes on with 2kliksphilip though.
I can understand wanting to rewatch a 45 second segment, but understand not wanting to rewatch the projector or destruction bits when they were already several minutes long. Was awesome for me when editing the main video to know those bits were already polished, though!

If it's a game you as a viewer already have played, you're just interested in their _reaction_ (yet far fewer people complain about game playthroughs than video reactions)

I really liked the feeling of you revealing your plans and seeing them play out in real time to see how it's working out, now when I think about it. It feeds into the parasocial friendship I've built with you over the years. But I absolutely loved the idea of this communal discussion where you explained your plans and carried on with them. I hope I am making sense because it feels like I'm just rambling with no sleep.

The main thing that's confusing is there being no way to tell between segmented videos and others. For example the fire extinguisher video isn't a part of your longer video on office, but it looks the same as the other short form videos taken from the long one

It's good to know that you make these full videos available afterwards because I've realised that I'm on the opposite site. For example: I don't care about Office skies. I'd never click that video (and also haven't) Not at all. But in a more complete video it feels more like an interesting tidbit than a lazy attention grab. The fire extinguisher was really interesting and based on the video length I knew you'd go more into detail and not just make a lazy before/after comparison. So in that sense I subconciously equate length with quality.
To share my own perspective: I've clicked on the before/after video of Nuke when youtube recommended it and saw that it was a lazy montage. This made my brain go into defense mode, completely ignoring your next couple uploads no matter what they may have been. Even the full Nuke analysis video I hadn't watched until several days after the release. TH-cam has become so rotten over the years that I've developed this instant defense mechanism for low quality videos. And it was certainly triggered by your smaller uploads.
Knowing how you approached this makes it easier to understand and I'm curious to see how this experiment works out in your next click empire analysis. I expect to be in the minority and for it to turn out positive.
On the other hand that system means I'd never watch a short video from you ever again, even if it's standalone, because I'll just expect to click the longer and complete version. So keep that in mind as well.

I've been watching your content for upwards of 5 years now, which is crazy to think about. If fans are annoyed by your content, please know that you have at least one fan who is always excited to see your videos in my feed, regardless of what it is. The effort and quality in your videos does not go underappreciated here! Sometimes people are just going to complain. Upload a bunch of bite sized stuff: you upload too much! Put a lot of time into one video and there's a gap in your upload schedule: you upload too little! I think its important to remember the human side of this kind of production. You are one person, you're doing your best, playing the game under the same rules and everyone else. You probably can't say it in your video but my one thought is this: fuck em, you know you make good content, your fans know you make good content, and judging by the fact that you've remained relevant in all the time *I've* been watching your content, it seems to me like its working. The only reason I've ever intentionally skipped a video of yours is because it was about GPU stuff I don't understand or its the transphobic hogwarts game that I don't care to hear your stance on, I presume you aren't transphobic. I sure hope you aren't! But my point is that it wasn't because of you, and I'm positive that if I could stand the topic I would be entertained by those videos. You have some real talent with this stuff and it's been a joy to watch over all this time, so I guess this comment is me saying thank you, and I hope this comment finds you well.
I know there's probably only a small group that do what I do, but when it comes to informative content that I'm personally interested in I always watch the original video first. I love to get the information how its meant to be received and with its intended pacing, especially when it comes to creators like yourself. And then afterwards I might watch a few reactions from people that I'm familiar with and that might have context or points to add to it. With that said, no matter what changes you feel you need to make, whether its for creative or engagement reasons, I'll always be happy to see you've uploaded a new video for me and everyone else to watch and enjoy, and I'll always be secretly hoping for another story time from your old CS clan days.

I have the same issue with this as I have with the great ' Scott Prop and Roll' channel, when so much in my sub box is repackaged from other videos as a snippet or YT Short it becomes really hard to work out which videos are actually new stuff I haven't seen before. It kills my enthusiasm a little to watch if I immediately realise I've seen it already. Branding may help as someone else has suggested.
