    My uncle had a '58 Impala- all black, with gorgeous chrome appointments and bumpers. It had white sidewall tires and knockoff spinner hubcaps like this Bel Air in this great video, too. I remember the twin chrome Down swept exhaust tips, and red leatherette interior. He kept it in the pristine condition just like the B-52s he was in charge of as a crew chief in the 409th Bomb Squadron.

      Nothing like Chevys first big block in a car for 1958s. Great engine but many did not understand they couldn't turn the RPMs like their small block counter parts. 348s and 409s were great engines and are very hard to find these days.

I opened the vent window and threw it out. Then he took off from a green light and hammered it to the floor. That engine sound still stays with me to this day! We later went to a Ford Dealership.He test drove. A 64 new Hi-po Ford Fairlane. The smaller version with a 289 and a 4-speed. White with red interior. Man, What a day for a little kid to remember. Wasn’t ‘58 the first year for the Impala? And, did the Impala have three taillights/side? Whatever....this Bel Air is nothing short of beautiful. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to see a real classic.

    • @samspace81
      @samspace81  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Impala was the top trim level for the 1958 BelAir, becoming its own standalone model in 1959. Thanks for watching, Mac mac!

      @@samspace81 I didn’t know that....and I’m as old as the hills. One of our neighbours had a brand new ‘58 four door sedan (can’t remember the model...Biscayne?, Del Ray?) with an in-line 6 and three on the tree that would do the quarter mile in about 24 seconds at around 48 mph. (One big ,heavy, underpowered car). Ah...but I recall seeing a 1958 Impala 2-door hardtop in the early 70’s....man, it was sharp. That’s the one I saw with the three taillights/side and it was painted a gold-metallic colour and had scads of chrome on it. There weren’t too awful many survivors of the 58’s.....the front fenders were terrible to rust. That Bel Air in the video will last at least another 62 years.

    My dad had a 1958 Biscayne. I took my Cal drivers license road test in it the summer of 1966. It had the 348 engine. Super quick and strong. Probably pretty bad gas mileage but gasoline was around .32 cents a gallon then. I remember this car had a rack in the truck where a block of ice was placed. A fan blew over the ice to cool the passenger area..

    Family car late 1957 was 58 Belair. Four door. First one on showroom floor in town where we lived. 348 4 barrel automatic. 10 MPG. Needed high test to run properly. Dad usually used Amoco White gas. Passed down to me at 15. I donated points off my driver's license to my state in this car!! Otherwise good date car with big back seat. Notice clock is located on passenger side. Ours had quit working and was never repaired. However when I dated clock ran when my date was in the car. Sounds strange, but true. Car been gone since 1968.I think it would have been a good "Christine" if a Plymouth Fury had not been Stephen King's version. From the front it did look fearful enough.

    Absolutely beautiful car! Love those colors. This was one of 17,112 Bel Air Sport Coupes built in '58. If I had to make a guess as to how many survivors of this model, I would say less than 200. Factory price was $2447 for a 6, and $2554 for a V-8. Shipping weight was 3455 for a 6, and 3458 for a V-8.
