    Very good explanation and visual example of how to do hill starts.
    I have been having trouble with my hill starts and finding the balance between setting the bite, gas and releasing handbrake.
    I had changed instructor and previous instructor had covered very little on hill starts during lessons.
    It's put that aspect of my driving behind the levels of ability with my other driving skills.
    Meaning that I'm nearing my test and needing to improve a skill that should have been established much earlier.

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, you should not drive down a steep hill in neutral as this is coasting and quite dangerous, doing this causes the car to lose its ability to slow down with the engine - engine braking. It will cause the car to go too fast and will be harder to stop.

    When I do a hillstart, I rev up the car as you say and get the bite. When I realease the handbrake the car hardly moves and even a bit higher with the clutch it still moves off slowly especially at traffic lights. This is only a problem with handbrake starts for me. If i do a start while moving off at a junction while quickly getting to the accelerator and bite and move off and the car doesn't move off as slowly then. With the handbrake start? Should I just add more gas as I am bringing the clutch up to move away on hills quicker?

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive

      You need to get a stronger/higher bite first and foremost, perhaps a little extra juice would be no harm.

      +Conor Regan That does not sound right to me unfortunately Conor. You must always check your blind spot last because that way it is more up to date. I have a nice easy to remember routine which you can see here in this video th-cam.com/video/Y6V0AGFaO3k/w-d-xo.html
      But sometimes the blind spot will need to be refreshed as you will see here at the very beginning of this video th-cam.com/video/sLjDVthx4cI/w-d-xo.html
      Dp basically to answer your question the blind spot must be checked after the indicator because that way itvis more fresh and up to date. You seem to be doing the right things but you need to simplify and alter your routine slightly

    Hello Dane when doing a downhill start in traffic or a normal hill start downhill should you balance clutch and gas then release handbrake, or should you find bite with footbrake on then release handbrake and lift footbrake off and clutch up or should you have clutch down with handbrake on and also be on the footbrake and then release handbrake and then footbrake while bringing clutch up, which method is best?

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive

      Handbrake down and then gradually release the footbrake, no need for a bite because gravity is helping you

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wouldn't necessarily be wrong but possibly unnecessary, if you get extra power with the gas and bite you may take off too abruptly on the downhill.

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive

    Hi Dane, I have finished my EDT training with my instructor and still having problems with the hill start. The problem is that it all works while driving my instructor's car, I can easly find the bigger or as you call it second bite , and my own car (which is older, bigger and heavier) Doesn't give me any extra bite .Is there a problem with my clutch? Another thing is she was trainning me to not use the accelerator until the car starts moving. Surprisingly in her car it is possible to move on a big hill using just the bigger bite without accelerator and never had problem with it driving her car, then I drive my car and I stall nearly every time! I have my test in 2 days....

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your instructor probably has a diesel car which makes it easier to move off and that's why I always get people to give it at least a little bit of acceleration moving off - because petrol cars can be trickier.
      As for your car it might be harder to find the second bite but try lift your clutch a little quicker - there might not be much of a difference between the two bites in some cars.
