  • In this driving lesson video I will explain how you can keep a proper speed without driving too slow in the driving test. Showing good progress and being confident and decisive is a very important part of the test. Make sure to avoid driving too slow and not be too cautious in the driving test by watching this speed and progress driving test video where I will explain how to show good progress on the straight and at junctions and roundabouts.

    Delighted to get a good example of balancing progress with reading the road and reacting to hazards before they could become a problem. It's something I've been worrying about with my test around the corner. I must say though, the area you drove through looks like a time capsule from the 1970s, especially with the road quality haha.

    Hi Dane. Thanks for all your videos. They're very helpful! I passed my test this morning with 3 grade 2s, no grade 1s. This was my second attempt.
    My first attempt was over 5 years ago after which I didn't take up driving until a couple of months ago. Over the course of 2 months, a lot of aspects had improved significantly, thanks to my instructor, and my very helpfully critical friend (who was my accompanying driver for practice sessions). However, progress was an issue and it has been a long-standing one (even in my first test, apart from two grade 3s in other areas, I had lots of grade 2s in the progress section). I failed a mock test during my last lesson last Friday only because of a cluster of grade 2s for progress. My instructor told me that if I only fix that, I would sail through the test.
    He said that I was driving at 25 km/h on a clear straight road in housing estates (where the limit is 30 km/h). This didn't really feel slow to me from behind the wheel. He asked me to swap seats with him so I could watch him committing the progress faults I had committed during the mock test. That was what really helped me. It showed me what "slow" really felt like. So, in my test today, there were no faults under progress.

    When I did my 4th Driving Lesson. I did go over a 50 and 60 Kilometer Speed Limits. So I do need more control with my Speed. And at three Roundabouts at the first one. I did turn to hard when I was trying. To make a right turn to a right lane. And at a second one trying to take a left lane. I should have kept more left. And at a third one a car was passing by. But I didn't see him properly. So I should have kept an eye out more. Before I tuck off and I must have. More time to check in future to. So there you go.

    Hi Dane, love the videos great production you have going. I have a quick question. It is in relation to (01:25 in this video) indicating when going around a stationary obstruction. I always indicate if it's a car with people in it, a door open, its lights on or if it's a big overtake. I've noticed you in most your videos that you pretty much indicate most, if not all the time and thinking about it, it's technically right to so but my driving instructor said what I have above-mentioned. Should I indicate most times? Or could you tell me how it works, cheers Look forward to your response 🚗

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive

      That's just the way I do it, there is plenty of discretion involved. When it comes to driving there's plenty of grey, not everything is black and white. I have no interest in generating check lists in order to decide whether or not to indicate, too much effort.

    You mentioned in the video that you tell your students to remain in first gear when you're at the front of the queue at a red light. Is it best practice for the test to have the handbrake up, with the clutch pressed and in first gear? Hi Dane, I failed my test today as I got 4 grade 2s for progress. I had only 1 fault or less for other categories. I just wanted to ask, if cars on a main road or street give you hand signals or flash lights to let you out, should you move out and complete your turn? I had 3 different drivers signal to me to move off but I was unsure if I should respond to their signals. I was left at busy junctions for at least a full minute, because there was a constant stream of cars. Already booked my 2nd test and I'm on the cancellation list, would you be able to give me some tips?

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive

  • @debbiehenri7170
    @debbiehenri7170 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    A couple of weeks ago, I took a 'mock driving test' and my 'progress' was a significant fault. In fact, the 'mock driving examiner' said it was a bit like 'Driving Miss Daisy.' Asked if I was slower because it was a mock test, I had to admit that this was true in most cases.
    I was under the delusion that if I drove at 25mph in a 30mph zone (regardless of road conditions), I would be considered a safer driver by a real examiner. However, I was told examiners only consider it correct if there is sufficient reason to travel slower, and that by driving too slow I would be marked down for the possibility of holding up traffic (even if it isn't there to be held up at the time of taking the test).
    I didn't realise that this happens quite commonly in tests.

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aim to drive normally and a lot of examiners think that the people who drive too slow in the test are likely to drive too fast when they are alone.

After you changed to 1st gear did you lift off your foot from the clutch only halfway so that you could creep with clutch control? Or did you come off the clutch completely after changing to 1 and then again you pressed clutch halfway to creep out. Don't know if my question makes sense

    Great video! I'm just wondering on a major road or a road where you would be expected to be up at the speed limit of that road, but it has been raining/is raining(medium-Heavy rainfall) is it ok to reduce speed (about 10km below normal limit) in those situations, given the weather conditions could impact the road grip?

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First off, my name is Dane, as in the Great Dane, not Dave.
      That should be fine depending on the road but don't overdo it. The tester wants to see someone who is confident in their ability to handle the car in all conditions, not someone who who is going to drive excessively slow because of a drop of rain. This is Ireland after all.

      Yes stay in first gear at any type of junction. You can do what you want but my advice is that you wait in 1st gear if you are at or near the top of the queue. Why on earth would you be waiting in neutral? I never understand the logic of this.
      By waiting in 1st gear you are ready to move off quicker and therefore it is more practical.

      @@DaneTygheletsdrive 30kmph is good for the car and smooth ride. I don't bump into the cars in the front if I am at 30kmph. But there is fear that the drivers behind me can come at 50kmph

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't worry about the drivers behind you, that's not your responsibility. You need to be focused on your driving and not trying to guess what the driver behind is going to be doing. Depending on the size of the ramp you should probably slow down to about 25 or 30 km.

    Hi there, i am just wondering at a stop sign do you have to put the handbreak up in the test? Even if you know there is nothing coming

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the situation, you should use the handbrake if you are on an uphill or stopped a long time. But if you are stopped for a very short time on a downhill no need for handbrake. The important thing is to stop completely at a stop sign and be observant.

      Thank you for the help!gery helpful video. I’ve my test coming up in churchtown and I failed for progression last time after I thought I did very well. I was always told to stop in 2nd , what exactly is rolling into 1st and is it acceptable for the test?

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this 5 tips video I deal with that under tip number 4. It is perfectly acceptable to do a junction in 1st gear especially if you need to creep out.

    How do you move off so quicj

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's all about the balance between the clutch and the acceleration, moving off quickly happens when you get some acceleration and find the bite and hold it, let down handbrake and give extra juice while bringing up the clutch further and you should be grand.

    I was failed bcause of driving too slow 25mph in 30mph sign which i thought it would be best and safer in the examiner eyes but it was not! also from the slip road to the carriage way I was driving 45 and building speed once I check my blind spot and notice a gap to emerge but sadly the examiner considered it as a serious! any advises please and one Q lets say you are driving in a 30mph sign whats the exact speed that wouldnt be considered as slow, also in a national speed limit road?

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First of all you can't fail for driving 25 in a 30 zone, it's more likely that this was one of the faults that accumulated to your overall downfall unfortunately. As for the slip road incident I would be reluctant to comment because you say that you were going at a reasonable pace and carried out some observations but yet the examiner still considered it a serious issue? Either you're leaving out some information or the examiner was having a bad day.
      As for the 30km Road question I cannot answer that question with an exact speed, it's simply impossible for me to give you a particular speed as it entirely depends on the situation you are in so I would advise you to drive based on what you see in front of you as opposed to treating the situation like a mathematical question. So for example if it's a wide safe road with little or no parked cars then you should be fine at 25/30 but if its a tight street with lots of parked cars and limited vision ahead then go much slower and in all cases only drive at a speed in which you can stop safely.

      @@DaneTygheletsdrive Thanks for reply Dane. I tend to stop at roundabouts and Junctions and switch into first gear before taking off, even if there no cars and there clear. Would doing this mean fail?

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Doing that more than once or twice means you will probably fail.
      The whole idea of roundabouts is to keep traffic moving, try and get down to second gear about 30 metres before the line and look early and often, if it's safe just go, otherwise you'll be annoying other drivers and not showing good observation and confidence
