Well done Mr.Zondo, great information well presented. I’ve just returned to driving a manual car after 30 years of driving mostly automatics, your advice is exactly the stuff I’ve relearned or was never taught in the first place! 👍
I have watched many Videos regarding driving instructions in various channels But You are the best explaining Very clearly each situation and questions came in mind for beginners👍🏼. Great job

Also treating a clutch lightly after changing to any gear, I am gonna have to test and see how I actually do it. i never thought about it mindfully, but it sounds like a great tip and great thing to understand
Very nice Video! One Part that i might add is that many people stay on the clutch If they stand for a longer duration(for example Traffic light) instead of just switching to idle. If you stay on the clutch you wear out the release bearing for no reason.
All of these are stuff i struggle with in my car. I'm a new driver and just bought a 2004 g35 coupe. These tips will help me get a lot more comfortable in my car
@damionsinmons23 normally beginners get a hatchback like a fiesta or a yaris because theyre shorter in length and easier to manuever. So for your experience does having a coupe affect you in that way, and does the power output mess with your driving experience?
@@7rodo I don't think the length is what gets me. However the power output kind of scares me a bit especially since I'm not all the way proficient in driving the car so I kind of freeze in fear
When downshfting, gently tap on the throttle to bring the revs up, then release the clutch. This will match the engine speed with the wheel speed and you will find that downshifting will be a lot smoother.
This is pure gold! Sure, experienced drivers may snicker but for us newbies there are some excellent nuggets here. 7:10 My current driving instructor uses his hands to hold the steering wheel together with my hands to assist me. But his hand prevents me from making full long turns of the steering wheel because it is intertwine with mines. This is why I believe his method of teaching is lacking refinement and is risky because both of our hands will invariably get entangled when making certain maneuvers. I never thought my driving learning experience would be so crude and unsophisticated to the point of being below the basis of any teaching level. 😎💯💪🏿👍🏿
You must let off of the clutch slowly WHILE your right foot accelerates.. Your release of the clutch is whats allowing the car to gain momentum..So left foot slowly up while you feel the car catch more speed...
Thank you for the video. In the beginning I noticed that at the traffic lights you engaged 1st gear and keept the clutch pedal pressed. This should be avoided as it wears out the clutch. How a car should be stopped at the traffic lights is with neutral engaged and the break pushed. This is also the only way that a start stop system is going to be engaged to save on fuel.
The bit about not forcing it into gear was my biggest problem learning. Keep doing 2nd to 5th and my mom would be like tell me to give it more power haha.
Hi. I have been a driving instructor for 17 years and will say the same, this is exactly how I teach my pupils. You and Andy will recognise this, you get a pupil who has been driving before and they are doing all the things wrong that you highlighted in your video and when you enquire as to "who told you to do it that way" they say their previous instructor. It makes me despair that there are driving instructors out there that teach car control all the wrong way. love the video, duno why YT is showing me it.. passed donkeys ago and drive trucks for a living.. but still... there are a few learners around me that will benefit from this. but I do have to ask, WHO ... WHO is driving like this.... a lot of this stuff is stuff instructors should be addressing after a few lessons. or the verry least leaving with pointers for self improvment. well other than those doorknobs who take a .... ambitious emerbe out of junction and somehow fail to continue accelerating. see plenty of them. but geniunly do instructors just not bother these days? dont expect them to be teaching rev matching or other stuff, but they rest they aught to be doing if they dont want their car in for repairs every other week.
Thanks for the comment. It's things I've seen learners do over and over. Sometimes it's not because they were taught that way, it could be they find it easier that way and it's wrong. Or the just think that's how it's supposed to be. Eventually they improve though. 🫣
I passed my driving test from the first try in August 2022 with zero penalty points, but it’s only few months later (when I got my own car) that I realized there were so many things I still didn’t know about clutch control, that my instructor simply didn’t teach me. I don’t know how, but the car I was driving during the lessons with him didn’t have any issue about leaving only using the clutch and not the gas too. And there’s another thing that absolutely left me in disbelief when I’ve firstly driven my own car, because I simply didn’t understand why it was so different from the other car I was used to: when driving off a hill, my instructor taught me this technique - clutch and brake both down, release the clutch a little bit until the car starts slightly shaking, then release the brake, then fully release the clutch - it’s only now that it seems odd to me, how could that car move off a hill without using the gas AT ALL? Being a beginner, I thought that’s how it works for every car. I had a disastrous day when I drove with my dad and I absolutely couldn’t get the car to move on the hill because of what my instructor told me. And what’s even more weird, the technique I’ve learned from the instructor seemed perfect because in that manner I NEVER got the car to stall or even go an inch backwards. It was never ever going backwards, but the way everyone is teaching, there’s still a slight chance that the car will still go backwards for a very tiny bit. Sorry for the long comment, but I’m thinking there should be an explanation for these, and in other words, thank you for explaining so well and for being such a nice person. I wish you were my instructor.
No need to apologise for the long comment, I honestly appreciate it. As you've experienced, each car drives slightly differently but now that you know that, the next car you drive should be a lot easier to control as you will have more experience. Good luck with your driving. 🫶🏾
@@ZONDOdriving Thanks for the tips! Can you also do more videos about driving in traffic (encountering different situations for example clutch control in traffic uphill when the cars in front keep stopping and moving slowly) ? Subscribed and much love from Romania 🇷🇴🫶🏻
There are a lot of good tips in this video, but I can't help but point out some things you did in the video which I find less than optimal. Riding the clutch at a stop light is a great way to shorten the life of your throwout bearing. I almost always put the car into neutral while waiting. I've heard the argument that you have to do it in slower cars so you don't take too much time setting off, but having driven a base model Citroën C3 with an oar for a gear lever, I don't see it. You're not trying to make a race start and if you are slow at moving your gear lever, waiting half a second more won't make a difference to most people. I agree that you should avoid rough gear changes. It lets you react when something is wrong before grinding gears. But that doesn't mean you should avoid reasonably quick ones. Taking too much (or too little) time shifting means you don't 'catch' the revs and the clutch has to make up for the work you should have done to match the speed of the engine to the speed of the wheels. This also applies to shifting down to overtake. Letting the clutch do the work will slow you down before you can use the lower gear to accelerate faster. It also doesn't light up your brake lights. Rev matching is somewhat advanced, but very much worth learning. Not only to extend the life of your car's components, but also to increase driving enjoyment. Locking arms while turning is bad, which is why we have the hand over hand technique. Some people find shuffling the steering wheel to have its merits.
Great analysis. I agree with your point about changing gears quicker. If you take too long on while climbing a hill for instance, there may be an issue. Locking arms is always bad when doing sharp turns, where as crossing arms may be OK.
In regards to the first tip. When coming to a full stop you know what else can upset the car. Downshifts, unless done very well. The added stability of being in gear for slower speeds is also negligible, that time spent in 3rd gear slowing down just means there's more room for error, if you for example, lift off the clutch too early or too fast having more engine braking suddenly. For a complete stop. Just slow down in 5th gear to ~1k revs and slot it in neutral. Then just focus on braking normally.
He have the best advice here on TH-cam and i drive that FF only i put in neutral when i stop( traficlight) and a hate that car but is much better then RClio
There is a site where you can sign up to learn to drive stick..people who are experienced just meet up with you and use their own manual to teach you.. Its pretty cheap actually. Supposedly a stick shift is a niche...
This is really helpful. I feel like, as someone who is new to stickshift, I don't know how to ask the right questions to my dad. This video answered all my questions, thank you so much!
Just bought a stick shift over here in the USA and honestly, I've been struggling with learning from people where there are so few people who drive standard, you have been such a great resource for me and my wife, thanks a lot ❤
I've only been driving for a few months as of now, when I was a beginner I had a hard time shifting and controlling the clutch. Shifting up or down comes a lot easier when you actually hear and feel the car needing to change gears, it's almost like it's crying for you to change it and once you get used to feeling your car, you'll start to change gears much smoother without even looking at the speedometer.
Nice video, except for the first recomendation. It is better to blip the gas downshift a gear, let the motor star breaking the car on its own and keep doing that for all gears. Less brake wear and you keep better control of the car
Been driving for a couple of months now, almost a year. One thing I still ‘fear’ is using the clutch simultaneously with the gas. I donno, maybe has to do with the fact that I was told to never use them in conjunction. And it’s a bit of an issue with steep inclines, hence I avoid them by all means
You can press gas and clutch without problem. It's called revving up. You can do that to go from 4th to 3rd if you want high rpm to accelerate faster. You jsut Dont need to press the gas very hard when you clutch. That's all. It's like pressing gas in neutral gear.
Dont need to do the 5-3 then 3-1 for stopping for a red light. When you are near a red light just slow down and put the car in neutral, irrespective of the gear it was in. Then just relax or you can put in neutral stop the car completely and then just hold cluthch in 1st !! Thank me later. Minimum clutch use is the best clutch use !!
If I were in 5th, I'd coast in 5th until I'm around 1k rpm and then go in neutral. Use engine brake... On occasion knowing I will accelerate before my stop I will still coast from 5th or whatever and when needed switch to the gear I desire.
I try to use my regular brakes more than the engine brake. I do this because the less you use the clutch the longer it will last. Brakes are less expensive and easier to change out than a clutch. I never changed the clutch on my last car and it had over 240,000. Miles on the odometer and the clutch was still working fine.
Usually when I'm in high speed and I want to stop I press the clutch and put the car in neutral and remove my feet from all the pedals and brake when I need till I stop
I have got my license for almost two months now, so I am fresh out of driving school, yet this video taught me so much about driving a manual, in contrast to my driving instructor. Thanks a lot!

It's likely that the instructor vehicles have quite high idle rpm - which in essence is the car helping you give an extra bit of gas.
You are a very good instructor
I appreciate that!
Brother thanks for your video
Thank you for watching! 😎
He have the best advice here on TH-cam and i drive that FF only i put in neutral when i stop( traficlight) and a hate that car but is much better then RClio
Wonderful explanation 👌💯✨
Thank you! 🫶🏾
In terms of clutch wear, it’s best to depress the clutch pedal as fast as possible.
Just having trouble with turning today while training, thank you for this one.
You got this!
Great video, nice and concise thanks - definitely needed this!
Glad you enjoyed it!
In general if you cant control the clutch in reverse its gonna be hard to use if your on hill in moving traffic
Thanks for sharing mate , it helps alot 👏🏻
Glad it helped
This is really good. thank you!
wow thanks for this, very informative 👏
Glad it was helpful!
There is a site where you can sign up to learn to drive stick..people who are experienced just meet up with you and use their own manual to teach you.. Its pretty cheap actually. Supposedly a stick shift is a niche...
Thank you so much
You're most welcome
Excellent video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
This is really helpful. I feel like, as someone who is new to stickshift, I don't know how to ask the right questions to my dad. This video answered all my questions, thank you so much!
That's awesome. Thanks Chloe
You actually taught me how to drive
Wow. Thanks
Just bought a stick shift over here in the USA and honestly, I've been struggling with learning from people where there are so few people who drive standard, you have been such a great resource for me and my wife, thanks a lot ❤
Thank you Noah. I really appreciate you guys watching and your feedback. Hope you're enjoying your car.
very good video !
Glad you liked it!
I enjoyed the lesson thanks very much
Thank you for watching 🫶🏾
Passed my Road test on Monday due to your videos💯🫶🏼
Congratulations and well done for the hard work you put in! 🥳
Great video mate.
Thanks, you’re a 🌟
Nice video, except for the first recomendation.

Thank u very much, I watch this multiple times and I finally got it... now I'm gonna shocked my instructor 😅😅
😅😅 A good shock I hope. Thanks for watching! 🫶🏾
I'm doing that too! I don't understand why everyone isn't talking about this but I think this is the easiest way
In neutral engine braking doesn't work, so braking won't be as effective as it can be. So it's good to keep your car always in gear
@Alan23204 yes I did change my braking once I understood a little more about cars I now follow these rules by heart !!
Usually when I'm in high speed and I want to stop I press the clutch and put the car in neutral and remove my feet from all the pedals and brake when I need till I stop
super helpful thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
After I see this .. I will apply tomorrow as a taxi driver .. thank you ..
How did it go?
@@ZONDOdriving thank you
I’m just here to say I love your donut socks 😂
A person of culture! I love it 😎😅
I have got my license for almost two months now, so I am fresh out of driving school, yet this video taught me so much about driving a manual, in contrast to my driving instructor. Thanks a lot!
Thanks. But you probably learnt a lot more from them than you realise.
Great video my brother
Thank you! 🙌🏾
just started driving manual, this tutorial was very well done! thanks!
Glad you liked it!
You gained another Sub❤ Love you Bro❤

Thank you Bro
I miss driving automatic. It's fun and you do a much better Job You're self then the computer🍻
Normally I see people saying they miss manual
@@ZONDOdriving What i mean't. I miss manual so much.
Great instructional
Lovely stuff.
Love your content brudda zondo if you don’t mind me asking are you South African 🇿🇦?.
