    --> 3rd 30 km/h (maybe a little before)
    Certain town situations
    --> 4th 45-50 km/h
    Open/better roads with no parked cars
    --> 5th 70+ km/h
    Main roads/motorways

Many of the other learner driver's at the test centre told me they too watched your video's and found them extremely helpful on getting the perspective right on driving. I do not know how they did . Helo Dane i just wanted to tell you that your channel has helped me a lot. There is so many things you wont even get into on your lessons with an instructor, so its very handy you can just relax at home and go over few things when it comes to driving to get fuller and better explanation. if someone ever criticise your channel or says something negative about it don't listen to them. you are doing a great job as a driving instructor, there should be more driving instructors like you. What if you want to downshift so you can accelerate faster to overtake? If you brake and then change down a gear, not only would you be slowing down substantially causing vehicles behind to brake, but also the vehicle you wished to overtake would have moved further up ahead due to the speed differential.

      It's not a case of one way or another, it's about doing both as they are both helpful. You can't just generalise it as if we're talking about favourite characters from Game of Thrones. Engine braking alone is not going to be great on a steep downhill. Just like you won't need to brake very much on a flat surface. Have a look at the video below -

    • @StevenHeatherton
      @StevenHeatherton 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DaneTygheletsdrive basically, from what I’m understanding at least, it’s recommended that when down shifting gears you should clutch in, select the gear and then press the gas lightly, then release the clutch. Have you ever heard of this method? I personally have not and might have just confused myself by looking at this..

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even reading that comment makes me confused, for example if we followed this flawed logic then you would be accelerating on downhill junctions which is absolutely crazy. I would disregard whatever rubbish you heard about "rev matching" and focus on getting down the gears gradually aiming to hit 2nd gear approximately 20 metres from the junction. If you have any further questions please feel free to ask.

    I have 2010 ford fiesta and It has this green arrow indication when to shift a gear. It's relatively early, every time I reach 2k rev. I feel that the car is still fine and can stay on lower gear a little bit longer (especially on 4th one). In this car 50kph is 5th gear. The arrow is a bit distracting and eventually forces me to go its way. I guess it's set up for very fuel efficient mode. Any advice?

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That arrow is a useful guide but you can't be treating like the Gospel, whether you go up the gears should depend on what you see in front of you as opposed to a guideline from the car.

      70% cases during up hill I am able to change 1st to 2nd during up hill in normal way I.e
      Remove leg from accelator change gear and agin quickly move leg to accelator
      but some time few seconds delay to give accelato cause it stop if changing 1st to second durung up hill ,in plane & down hill no issue at all .
      Then I was thinking during up hill do not remove my leg on accelator so during gear change rest 30% cases it will not stopped.
      My friend in one car rnd division he told no harm as accelator cause more fuel goes in engine so durung up hill if you do same then no harm but he has no experience to drive car in hill area 😀

      5 to 2 is possible but it is quite a jump and some cars may struggle with it. Probably best to go one by one slowing down early and gradually. 5 to 3 could be OK it just depends on the speed and the situation, try come off the clutch slowly for a smooth gear change.

      @@DaneTygheletsdrive the question was: after we change a gear from 1st to 2nd is it ok to lift the clutch pedal and press the gas pedal in the same time like a see-saw instead of lifting the clutch and than press the gas? Do you understand now?

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well that makes a little bit more sense. The answer to your question is the same as I've already said - yes as long as the engine doesn't over rev. It should be fine to give it a bit of juice as the clutch is about 90% up.

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Shreesh Shukla It's okay to be confused, don't worry about it too much, it depends on the car as not every single car is going to adhere to these guidelines. You have to be flexible and sensible, i think 45 is too early for gear 5 but if the car is able to handle it then it will be fine, if you go to 5th gear in my petrol car it would struggle. All cars are different - there is no single and simple answer. If it were that simple it would be no fun😁

    What about the gas pedal, do you completely or partially release it during gear changing?

    • @unes7930
      @unes7930 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      when u clutch u release gas at same time not before not after about the same time if not u will hear more engine raving if u do it slow if u do it faster u may feel more engine breaking so make sure to sync both gase and clutch (biting point disactivation ) .

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Shadowx Talion completely release the gas when changing gears otherwise the car will rev.

    • @unes7930
      @unes7930 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      what u said works only on first gear and on diesel to be exact ,on petrol u do same but u do a bit of gas before biting point otherwise petrol will stall very easily without gas (diesel
      is a lot forgiving at this point i mean it can move without gas easily)... other then first gear u don't hold biting u just release it normally ,u can do it super fast if u have a sport clutch just for mention ...

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      AB 27 there is only a biting point when you are moving off with the handbrake. When changing gears there is no biting point so basically just release the clutch the way I explained in order to engage the gear properly,then apply some acceleration if you want to build up some speed.

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +AB 27 if Changing gears, no gas, clutch in fully, move the gear stick to the appropriate gear then release clutch slowly and finally give it some gas.

      Keyo Fires Yes maybe I left that out but it is covered in many other videos on moving off and in the commentary drive videos. In order to secure the car the driver should pull up the handbrake and then then go to neutral gear, you'll know its neutral when you can easily shake the gearstick from left to right.
