    I'm a 60 yr. old disabled woman and this video walked me right through my project. I was able to do everything in just about an hour (including changing the fuel filter and air filter, too). Most of my time was spent watching the video to make sure I was doing it right. Thank you for sharing. I'd don't know what I'd do without youtube and folks like you that show how to DIY and save a bunch of money without having to switch to Geico. LOL Seriously, I have a shop full of tools, so having the tutorial is a great way for lil' o ladies like me to save money by doing the job myself.

Is it no more complicated than match the diameter of the original filter?

    If your mower doesn't have a fuel cutoff valve, BUY ONE NOW. About $5 or as part of a tune-up kit. My Club Cadet's carburetor float valve stuck and it filled my engine with gasoline. Really poor engineering that the only thing between gravity and the crankcase is NOTHING. A fuel cutoff is turned on before starting and closed to turn off the mower. I first noticed that my fuel tank was empty and the mower would not turn over. The piston was hydro-locked. I took out both spark plugs and the cylinder on the left squirted out a full loads of fuel. The carb was full of fuel over the choke plate.
    Since then, I bought a new starter, air & oil filter, 5 gal 10W-30, fuel pump, fuel cutoff, and fuel filter. After I drained the oil/fuel, I changed the filter and then refilled the crankcase. I ran the system to circulate new oil and had some smoke on initial startup. I ran it for about 30 minutes and heard a high pitch constant frequency whine/squeak. I let it sit to cool a bit. I rechecked the oil level and it was perfect but l and smelled a little fuel yet so I drained the new 2 quarts out and replaced it. My hunch is that the system is still circulating new oil but the sound I heard could also be some rust from being out overnight during a downpour with the hood off. At this point, I'm going to do research to see if there's anything that could be affected by the fuel event and talk to a Cub Cadet rep. I need to see if there's any manifold leaks or anything under the flywheel that could be causing the sound. There is no odd vibration. The motor has full power. The engine starts immediately. I'm trying to look for horses not zebra's but I've never had a mower or any other vehicle do this in my 40 year combustion engine life. A 50¢ needle valve that causes engine damage?

    • @TheHandsOnChannel
      @TheHandsOnChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, thanks for the warning. I'll put a simple shut off valve in near the tank. It would be better for storage to turn off the shut off and run the bowl empty.
      My guess is on the initial startup the smoke is from gas dissolving the oil on the inside of the cylinder causing the smoke. On the whine/squeak, could it be from the new fuel pump? Noises can be hard to pinpoint, you might try a mechanic's stethoscope. That can be as simple as a dowel rod or they actually make a special one for this purpose. Sorry I cant offer more help, good luck.

    • @akbychoice
      @akbychoice 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many new carbs have an electronic shut-off built into them. Not sure on yours but as long as it works it should be doing the job. If you leave the key on then it could potentially fill the crankcase with fuel. I never use fuel that has any alcohol in it, saves me from the dreaded ethanol carb issues.

    Thanks for the video. About your mention of mosquitos, I solved that by buying Citronella plants. Mosquitos realty dislike this plant (I learned about this as a woman in a Documentary on Africa recommended this plant to her students). There are several other plants that mosquitos stay away from, one is the Geranium...
    We have several Citronella plants that are very effective. Almost no mosquitos this year (new house in Tennessee). Our previous house in SoCal had no mosquitos for last few years that we were there.
    Hope that helps!

    Quick amateur question, is it necessary to soak the oil filter in oil prior to installation or is running the oil through it sufficient? Thank you in advance!

    • @TheHandsOnChannel
      @TheHandsOnChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't have to soak/fill the filter with oil but wet the seal with oil before you screw it on.

    John Deere mowers have a filter that is precharged with oil, so all you have to do change the filter and oil at the same time. Yah it cost $40 bucks for an oil change. I don’t think so.

    I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.

    • @defan2105
      @defan2105 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use the brake lock and you don't have to be sitting on it. What type of mower do you have? th-cam.com/video/cVAeInmPi2g/w-d-xo.html

    • @TheHandsOnChannel
      @TheHandsOnChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes Defan is correct. There is a parking brake lock in the center under the steering wheel. Push the brake all the way down and you set the brake lock with your hand. Then you can start it up normally. Also make sure the blade is not engaged or it wont start.

      @@TheHandsOnChannel Getting that deck off to check it and the blades does not look like fun with the manual PTO. Also, can you show where the fittings for greasing are and how does one change the transmission fluid or do you not do that these days? Thanks for the great video!
