    This is a CLA/CLS coupe. I don't see how any E class coupe owners see this as better looking than the current variant. Absence of a B pillar in the E class coupe makes them unique and elegant, especially when you have the windows down. Overall decent looking coupe but one not worth the discontinuation of the E class for.
    Now a coupe of the W214 would have been something spectacular.

    Respectfully, I wonder why they didn't revive the old CLK class name? This car is essentially is part of that lineage since the previous CLK was based on the C-class architecture, and used the C-class's interior and most of its suspension. Its a breathtaking design honestly, but the decision to not allow it to share in the absence of a B pillar (as previously mentioned) really brings the car down-market squarely into 4/a5/Q60/rc territory. Hopefully final pricing will be aggressive, otherwise it may run the risk of alienating upper-level Mercedes Coupe buyers.

    • @gonzochild
      @gonzochild ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The Mercedes names changed a few years ago to be being based on the last letter being a class level (So GLS is S-Class grade, GLC is C-Class grade). So in this case they are saying it is E-Class. grade.

    • @MediumBluWonder
      @MediumBluWonder ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@gonzochild That makes sense, & we all saw that coming when they switched the ML to the GLE in 2016 to bring it in line with the main line model E class sedan or the introduction of the original "4 door coupe" CLS in 2006, which does the same thing this car does but from a squarely E class based platform.
      However I think there is slightly more validity in the older name. Particularly when this car is far less E class than it is C class.

    • @yxdxb
      @yxdxb ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Shorter wheelbase. K: Kompaktwagen

    • @michaelh4484
      @michaelh4484 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The nomenclature of the C in CLK was taken from the CL at the time and was a play on saying it's the compact version of that. The CLK design was that of the E-Class.

    • @MediumBluWonder
      @MediumBluWonder ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yxdxb I'm aware of that & your right, but just like today the CLE is mechanically closely related to the C class. The CLK was also mechanically related to the C class, they shared a wheelbase, they also shared engines outside of the 55 and 63 AMG and black series variants. My comment is focused on both the on the surprising similarity me chin silly and asethtically in the lineages
      Clever marketing aside, just as the GLK, SLK, and CLK are all born from the C class chassis, so is this current CLE. So respectfully, I would imagine MB would lean on their rich heritage and pick a name from that past rather than create a new one.

    Mercedes have certainly shown inconsistency towards their coupes during the past 30 years. CL was originally applied to their renamed S and E Class coupes, when they became CL and CLK, and then to their 4 door coupes (CLS and then CLA). The 2dr coupes’ names went back to sharing model names with their saloon counterparts around 10 years ago while CL stayed, and remains, for the 4dr coupes. And despite its name the CLS is a 4dr coupe counterpart of the E-Class. And let’s not forget the CLC, which was a renamed, facelifted C-Class Sports Coupe.
    Moving to the CLK which, while supposedly marketed and priced as a E-Class coupe and shared similar design cues, were based on the smaller and cheaper C-Class’ architecture. And now we have this CLE, a car which has more in common with the C-Class’ version of the MRA2 platform and shares that car’s interior and wheelbase, but will no doubt be priced more as a E-Class coupe to reflect its name. Just like the CLKs.
    But all that aside, the CLE looks fabulous!

      why they discontinued the S63 AMG is still baffling me...and you're right it is a looks more of a baby S Class coupe that an E or C class😉

  • @savouryfriend

    This is a CLA not CLE. They just up-badged the car. Note the B pillar and interior being same as C class. -_-

    I would love if they would build a smaller coupe on a C-Class lenght, with highclass interior options like the new E-Class cockpit.

    The point of not having the exhaust coming out of the tail pipe housings is because the fumes would deteriorate them in no time at all! They are just for looks like many other modern cars.

  • @andras.89
    @andras.89 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'd wish the interior would be non-digital-touchy cheap and boring, would like to operate through fine knobs and well weighted buttons. Also whats with these piano black inlays still? Open pore satin wooden inlays or brushed aluminium are so much more classy.
    Loving the exterior though

    I've been waiting for the return of the E-class coupe since they did it so dirty when the E63S was announced with 4Matic+ but the E63 coupe was resigned to languish in RWD mediocrity.
    If the CLE63S comes in AWD, I'll be trading in my Type S early to own one

    There are actually speakers in the seat. Took me forever to find them. Turns out, they're not in the headrest but instead at the top of the seat on each side behind the headrest. Mercedes should be more clear on their location.

  • @shroomyesc
    @shroomyesc ปีที่แล้ว

    Not that anyone's gonna listen but before anyone says anything, yes it's based on the C-Class platform. No, it shouldn't be called CLC or CLK, it's larger than an E-Class coupe and the CLS isn't based on the S-Class either, Mercedes doesn't use the letter K in any cars anymore and CLC was a tiny hatchback, not a proper coupe.

    It boggles me that manufacturers will design stunning cars then whack a chrome surround on the bumper highlighting an exhaust that doesn’t exist. What design language is that speaking to?

    Thank God they've got an engine with more than 4cyls.
    One thing to me that is not so great is the infotainment tablet. Everything going similar to mobile apps, and not just MB doing it. There's a reason why you aren't allowed to use mobiles behind the wheel - they're a huge distraction.

    Nice video, Rory, covered most things, but what about the noise level? Sleek, stylish and subtle, but is it quiet? I get a lot of road noise in my E coupe, which pees me off, compared to my daughter in her Audi Q5 which glides along like in a cloud

    Absolutely stunning vehicle. Great job! However, the infotainment and gauge cluster are huge letdowns. Not a fan of the tablet style instrumentation that looks like an after thought and just slapped atop the dash and center console. Much prefer the layout of previous generations. Nice car nonetheless.

    With reference to the missing headrest speakers. This is one thing that scares me when ordering any new factory build; are we going to actually get all the options and extras we pay for!?! Used cars or "existing stock" avoids this problem because you can view it before buy, but I always prefer new factory builds.

    It's overpriced compared to the competition. Expect 10-15k of dealer rebates in 10 months. This is a full out c-class, there is no e-class dna in this car. The previous c43 had a 6 cylinder, so even that isn't a step up. If you absolutely must have this car, be patient and you will be rewarded with discounts, because Mercedes is experimenting to see if people will notice that it's just a c-class with an e-class price.

    Let’s take little sound lesson. First of all, to hear “dolby atmos” sound you have to use an appropriate streaming service like Apple Music or Tidal. Not an “atmos” video from TH-cam bc yt can’t deliver this format. And really enjoy sound quality like atmos, Master or Hi-Fi you need to connect your device with a cable ! These big data’s can’t just fly with Bluetooth through your car. It’s always funny when a car influencer tests an even higher sound set up like the high end options and play music from Spotify via Bluetooth. It’s like testing a GT3 RS in London Traffic
