Hi Jamie Great tune for my practice. Spent 9 years in Perth; now retired and living the dream for the last 20 years in Spain. Been a Piper and now learning the Alto sax and really enjoying it.
An immortal song - that says it all. I once had the pleasure of having a long chat with Mr. Malcon Duncan. I have seldom met such a personable person in the music scene. It was a pleasure for me. Unfortunately he died much too early. We had almost the same serial number for the tenor - which made us smile ...
Have tried to play around with this from time to time. Here's the simple truth: get your sax together! Thanks, Jamie. Another excellent lesson/presentation.
I remember this song’s written tenor solo is what got me to learn altissimo g as my first altissimo note. From there I just progressed upward and now I can play a full scale up to double altissimo f#.
Wow Jamie! One of my favorite tunes ever! Thanks for the detailed breakdown and pdf. I’ll include it on my daily practice sessions... which by the way I’ve designed following your masterclass suggestions! Two thumbs up!
Hi Jamie. I'd like to hear your thoughts on the long notes in the head. I always want to play them with some colour, like vibrato, a slight sforzando, or maybe a bit bend in the middle giving perhaps a bluesy feel. I re-listened to the original but don't hear anything, but I think you are putting some vibrato there.
Would love the free Pdf file for also sax on Pick up the Pieces please. I've been playing alto sax for a long time - 62 years. Play on my original MarkVI, classical, big band, pit and jazz. Really would love to learn these solos. Thanks so much.
I don't know if you'll see this question so long after the video was first uploaded but here goes. On the accented Bb - for tenor - the horns are doing a sort of shake with a slight fall. How is the shake effect done? I'm getting somewhere near it by using bis Bb and sort of trilling with side Bb Thanks
Hey Baz! Thanks for commenting man. I can only bow to your superior TH-cam presence. Anyone interested in a stills montage of sheep dogs should check out this guy’s channel. Re the band on this one, you met Shawn Lee and chatted for a while when you came to see me do that disco gig in east London that time, when we were all dressed up. Finchy was on it and Shawn was actually playing drums on that occasion. Anyway, thanks for watching and hopefully you’re happy with the results I’m getting out of my Fujifilm?! 😎
Hi great tutorial. I am a bit confused because in the first phrase, first bar for alto you play C G B A. I see someone on another tutorial play it this way also. However I see on 2 other tutorials they play C A B A. I don't know who is right. Your way does sound better, I must say.
Nothing to be confused about my friend - that's what the notes are. 100%. Check it yourself if you need to. That's what I'd do (and just did again in case) 😊 Not all tutorials are created equal I'm afraid!
C to Eb - normal. C# to E - trill the LH G key, A key and front F key with your RH. D to F - keep the palm key D on and trill the LH A and front F key with your RH.
LOVE this track and completely forgot it had those iconic Sax parts !!! Thanks for giving me more work to do during this madness !!!! I’m on complete lockdown due to health issues. Like you a proud Scotsman and for me as a Glaswegian 🏴🏴🏴🏴🥃🥃🥃🎷🎷🎷🎷🏳️🌈🎵🎼🎶🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Thanks for this one and look forward to the next one .... I love the Brecker version ... that must have been such an immense experience doing the track with them.
Get Your Sax Together thanks Jamie xxx unfortunately it’s a medical misdiagnosis that’s going to be lifelong .... it can get to a point of being under control abs that’s what we’re working towards ...I really appreciate your thoughts and well wishes xxx
Hi Jamie wow that video was incredible & loved that solo I have just started on alto sax & just found your awesome channel mate when practicing I seem to be pressing hard on the thumb rest with my thumb is it normal or should i relax more lol
Hey Jamie, I just had a couple of questions: Do your top front teeth still become sensitive even with the mouthpiece patches? After 40 minutes or so I seem to have this issue and have tried applying different pressure / angles. Also i'm not sure also how often to change the pads as I just wash my mouthpiece every time I play if I can to keep it as clean as possible. Just had one other question - do you by any chance know any good books or online PDF sheets which contain a variety of sheet music to gradually progress on? If you can eventually create one i'll be the first to subscribe / purchase lol! Thanks for another great in-depth tutorial.
I don’t get sore teeth, no. Make sure you’re not biting down at all. I just change the patch when it kinda degraded at the sides etc. Not sure about those PDFs, but in the future I’m gonna have a membership site.
Yeh, it's a winner that solo, but as it was more of a stand alone performance this week I did my own one. If enough people ask I'll cover it at a later date.
Email me on info@getyoursaxtogether.com Kris. I’ll check it out. 150 other people have downloaded it successfully so far so it might be something your end. Email me though and I’ll send it to you direct! Sometimes this happens with people and I’m not sure why!
Alto and baritone are Eb transposing instruments, while soprano and tenor saxophones are Bb transposing instruments. The physics of the conical bore is complex, but the beauty of the design is that the fingerings are the same on all saxophones.

Awesome lesson Jamie! Thanks for the detailed explanation. There is nobody close to this high level of sax teaching in the internet!!
Wow! Thanks Nestor.
Agreed - so great!

The Michael Brecker's solo at Montreux Jazz on this is utterly epic.
I know, right?
AWSOME very but very understandable, Do you know anything about latin cuban charanga music for flute as far as writing arrangements but for flute ?
Thanks Victor. I play flute but don’t know much about that style I’m afraid.
Great video----this is a fantastic channel for helping with the Alto Sax.
Happy to help!
Thanks Jamie - Amazing as usual (maybe even more amazing than usual!)

www.getyoursaxtogether.com/pickup for the pdf, although it doesn’t include Molly’s original tenor solo.
Jamie love your solo but could we also get one of the original?
Someone else asked for that as well. If many people do I’ll cover it on the channel!
Great band and great sound….this slowed down version is a tone out though? Am on another instrument reading the notation..
Saxophone is a transposing instrument. That’s why.
thankyou .looks magic

You’ll have to join my inner circle for me to answer that kind of question I’m afraid. Impossible on TH-cam comments ☺️

Brilliant Jamie. Love your take on the improvised solo! We're all familiar with the original, but super to hear a fresh interpretation of a classic!

Thanks for the lesson, pdf, and the Nice Groove! I'm most familiar with Candy Dulfer's performances of "Pick Up The Pieces!"
Yeh, I checked that out. Pretty burning!

How are you doing the trills?
C to Eb - normal. C# to E - trill the LH G key, A key and front F key with your RH. D to F - keep the palm key D on and trill the LH A and front F key with your RH.
@@GetYourSaxTogether Thanks. :)
DJsilversax 🙂
How do you play the highest note on alto sax in the solo? Can every alto sax produce this high note?
Yup. It’s an altissimo note.

Islendingar Sorry to hear that. Maybe in some small way music can be your therapy. 🙏🏻
Hi Jamie wow that video was incredible & loved that solo I have just started on alto sax & just found your awesome channel mate when practicing I seem to be pressing hard on the thumb rest with my thumb is it normal or should i relax more lol
Tighten up your neck strap to bring the mouthpiece level with your lip. That will take weight off your thumb. Good luck and enjoy your munsic!
@@GetYourSaxTogether thanks Jamie yes my neck strap seems to lower itself will get a better one keep up the great work buddy 👍

Why is a C on a saxaphone Eflat on a piano, why are all the notes on a saxaphone actually a minor 3rd away from the actual note?
Alto and baritone are Eb transposing instruments, while soprano and tenor saxophones are Bb transposing instruments. The physics of the conical bore is complex, but the beauty of the design is that the fingerings are the same on all saxophones.
