Saw this amazing Scottish band in their hometown of Dundee back in 1981. Perfect vocals and wall to wall funk. Certainly not a one hit wonder, their sound stands the test of time.

This was my jam as a kid in the 80's. Dad's band used to cover it. Always thought it was a black funk band from America as a youngin', oh how wrong I was. These blokes couldn't be more white 😆.....and from Scotland to boot 😳 What a classic!!
That's perfect though because the "average white band" in the '70s had a brotha in it somewhere. There were several, but the Doobie Brothers and their bassist Tiran Porter comes to mind. Nothing average about that band either.
What a wonderful world we live in. I wanted to hear "pick up the pieces". So I search on TH-cam and I get to hear the Average White Band play it recorded live. I love living in the Information Age of the Internet.
Better yet, I loved growing up in the 70's. Everything was so good: Music, cars, high school, braless halter tops, midriffs, micro mini skirts, crotch hair and daisy dukes were the norm in high school. Days before aids and herpes.

Yes, soul and funk have no color, just STYLE. AWGB have consistently been funky.They have just always broken through the styles. The way they have punched through, live, in concert is very wonderful. Yes: AWB is a really great band to see live. So Natural and human. I have a feeling that they are the same wherever they go.

I totally disagree. Check out Papa Grows Funk, Galactic, Vinyl, Greyboy, etc. AWB was incredible back in the day, but there are a ton of great bands carrying on that legacy.
Back in late '71 or early '72 at our EM (Enlisted Mans) club in Gelnhausen Germany, I heard the original AWB band play this. OMG ! I was SO taken ! (Being a garage band drummer, prior to drafted in '70 into the Army) WOW ! These guys got it going on ! What an AWESOME tune ! Then after being discharged in ' 72 I came home and when I heard them on the radio, I thought, It's about time !!! A song that will last through the ages. Thanks Guys ! INCREDIBLE SONG !!!
I was at this show in the 2nd row. HBO special. Awesome to see all those bands from Atlantic records. And around midnight Zeppelin finally hit the stage.
I was fortunate enough to meet these Guys backstage at the opening UK show in Bristol on their 1984 tour ....on the afternoon sound check . and was there for that evening's gig. The band I played in was supposed to be the support band too the AWB ,but the UK players got the support gig . however our horn section(I play Alto Sax) was allowed to go to that gig. we meet Molly and Roger and the rest of the band , they were brilliant and very Gracious towards us . A lasting and Treasured moment in time

I remember when this tune was released back in the 70's damn this was just good times living in Alabama, this and Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music" Atlanta Rhythm Section, music doesn't care what color you are, good music is just good music, nowadays music is so polarizing. And yes I listened to and enjoyed most of them. I really liked Donna Somer (sp?). I have no idea what started take "disco sucks" BS. Even people who danced to it try to distance themselves from it. Don't get me wrong, I really like most genres of music except country. Music kinda runs in the family, my gramdma started teach me piano when I was 6, took up the sax in the 3rd grade in addition to piano, my step father started teaching me guitar in addition to sax and piano. To top it off one of my dad's youngest brother is none other than Don Brewer the drummer for Grand Funk Railroad and in Bob Segerr's(so?) Drummer, the thing that stands out to me was that epic afro of his! I got to see many concerts free, and GOOD seats at that, first Grand Funk and then Bob Seger shows. Man! Those were great times!
THIS was the moment for me when music went color blind my dad took me to see them in 1976 in Detroit Michigan and was blown away still have the tour book one of my favorites still to this day and they had a great band logo as well (AWB with the females butt being the W) and they are still in rotation on ALL my musical gadgets

Yes it is necessary. That is the official name of the band, and it didn't bother us back in the 70's (contrary to what mainstream society may have thought). We loved them as much as we did Motown.
Saw them open for Billy Cobham at the El Cortez Hotel in San Diego, Oct 1974! I knew they were going to blow the World away!

I remember when this tune was released back in the 70's damn this was just good times living in Alabama, this and Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music" Atlanta Rhythm Section, music doesn't care what color you are, good music is just good music, nowadays music is so polarizing. And yes I listened to and enjoyed most of them. I really liked Donna Somer (sp?). I have no idea what started take "disco sucks" BS. Even people who danced to it try to distance themselves from it. Don't get me wrong, I really like most genres of music except country. Music kinda runs in the family, my gramdma started teach me piano when I was 6, took up the sax in the 3rd grade in addition to piano, my step father started teaching me guitar in addition to sax and piano. To top it off one of my dad's youngest brother is none other than Don Brewer the drummer for Grand Funk Railroad and in Bob Segerr's(so?) Drummer, the thing that stands out to me was that epic afro of his! I got to see many concerts free, and GOOD seats at that, first Grand Funk and then Bob Seger shows. Man! Those were great times!
THIS was the moment for me when music went color blind my dad took me to see them in 1976 in Detroit Michigan and was blown away still have the tour book one of my favorites still to this day and they had a great band logo as well (AWB with the females butt being the W) and they are still in rotation on ALL my musical gadgets
