American Shocks Chinese National TV With Perfect Mandarin

  • This is a clip from my January 19, 2011 interview with China Central Television (CCTV), back when I was just a wee student at the University of Chicago and way, way before I got popular on TH-cam. It’s a real blast from the past and I hope you enjoy. The hopeful optimism expressed here is really touching and heartwarming and it’s a shame relations between China and the United States have gotten so strained.

    • @Kefenw

It's because in china we have a lot of different dialects, i know of 7 but there might be more, that sounds different and with completely different pronunciations, the written words are the same for everyone though.
i.e. 我吃米饭 which basically means: I eat rice
In mandarin, basically the chinese everybody knows and that is used in the video is pronounced:
      wo che me fun
In cantonese which is I think the chinese used in Hong Kong it is pronounced:
      wo sick my fun
And lastly fuzhounese, which is the dialect my parents use and is arguably the hardest and rarest dialect in china, it is pronounced:
      Woy xie me buong
These are my go to examples when my friends ask me why the language my parents speak is so much different from Jackie chan movies
I grew up and live in germany so that might be inaccurate bc I'm pretty shit at chinese but that's the broad reason why chinese television always have subtitles on, not everyone in china can understand mandarin, it is teached at schools but not everyone in china goes to school and elderly still have a hard time understanding mandarin when their native dialect isn't mandarin

@@kevinjones5560 It's been that way for quite awhile, but I believe that the original commenter is referencing the current social divide between the US and China due to the alienization of Chinese culture and xenophobic remarks made by the US during the Trump administration. Uninformed statements like "the China Virus" made global news and gave foreign countries a horrible impression of the average American's perspective on multinational relationships.
I personally still believe that most Americans are kind and welcoming, regardless of what region of America you're from. There will always be extremists that threaten the reputation of those they claim to represent, but I've found that many people you think are racist are simply misinformed or misunderstood, and are open to change once they realize their mistake. As long as both countries continue to approach the discussion with an open mind and open heart, it'll always be possible for the world that the reporter in the video envisioned to exist.

@@RawrFishAE I think it's a common misconception that "china virus" meant anything xenophobic. I personally look at it as a way to remind the world that this virus is the Chinese Communist Party's fault for their attempt to cover it up, as they have been pushing a very hard narrative to blame it on various other countries. It helps bring the spotlight to their countless atrocities, but unfortunately, Trump said it which means everyone who loves him cheers it on, and everyone who hates him calls it racism. Nuance has become a lost art of forming opinions these days.

@@JAKIZAK How much time per day can you find to study a language to begin the long journey? Two 15 minute blocks per day? One 20, 25, or 30-minute block? How about 10 minutes a day to get the ball rolling? I say this as a master procrastinator who finally, after decades, finally learned how to get over that kind of thinking. Putting things off until the "perfect time" is a fantasy, an excuse and suggests that one is not as serious about one's purported goal as one claims. Nothing happens by saying "One day I'll start.." The number of things we spend our time doing for 15 or 20 or 30 minutes each day that could be swapped for the things we don't have time for, is substantial when you look at it. It's about priorities, making time, motivation, and commitment.

This is great, thanks for sharing! This reminded me that the first time I encountered this language was at a sleepover at my Chinese friend's house when were were maybe 10, and there was a Chinese news channel on with Chinese subtitles. I was distracted by it, and I remember watching it for a minute, and I remember turning to my friend's parents and asking, "Why do the subtitles not match what they're saying?" I don't know how the fuck I picked that up, but that was when I got my first lesson, and they told me about how people who can read the same text may not be able to understand eachother's spoken version of it, because of different dialects/languages. I can't say I've ever actively studied Chinese of any kind, but It's very cool and fascinating. I like hearing it and hearing about it and Chinese culture. Thanks again for making this, much love from one language nerd to another.
