    I’m a bit older generation Chinese American, and from my experience, I would say Xiaoma’s accent when speaking Mandarin would seem kind of rare for Chinese-Americans. It has quite a strong Beijing regional tone to it, which implies someone who actually grew up in that part of China or someone who learned Chinese as an adult from someone from there. From what I’ve heard, Chinese-Americans who speak Mandarin tend to have more of flatter standard accent, unless they’re joking around or speaking with close family, which becomes like a dialect. Of course it could also depend if they immigrated to the US, and if so at what age, and how or where they learned/studied Mandarin.

    • @fuzzzone
      @fuzzzone 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +635

      He definitely went wrong by choosing to say he was Chinese-American raised in the US. He should have at least said that he went to college in Beijing or something because, you're right, he has a clear regional accent.

      ABCs tend to lose the more flavorful regional ‘flourishes’ for some reason. 😂 Equally telling was his English accent - very white as Caleb says. Asian-American English accents are just slightly different (can’t quite put my finger on it, it’s very subtle - like one layer under what may be a Brooklyn accent, or some other thick regional American accent, there’s sometimes/often? an Asian-American tonality).

    • @mcRydes
      @mcRydes 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It isn't really an Asian thing per se, but I notice a lot of Asian Americans and Canadians have a subtle "west coast" English dialect. I think just because they live disproportionately on the west coast and British Columbia. The west coast of North America doesn't have a strong accent, but if you listen carefully you can notice.@@user-jk5um1om8l

Also, the pronunciation of the words in Tagalog was atrocious but the Filipino people obviously will be nice because he is white and white people speaking Asian languages fascinates people. Everything he says is always about eating, learning, saying a “little”, and simple chit chat norms like, “What taste good” or “How much does it cost” or “I want to visit.” He never says things that stray from common phrases.

    Hi Xiaoma. Just want to say I enjoyed the video. You don't need to worry about your "existential threat", you speak and sound really good so there's absolutely nothing to worry about. As you know, tiny nuances in accents are actually very normal in every language. Even the "American" accent came from a combination of people who brought it to America, and then evolved in America itself too, it's not even one "accent" depending on where you are in America!
    TBH, your accent is great for a northerner, and I actually got you on your choice of words when you talked about the cilantro!

      I agree, but our American culture is really stupid and people are afraid to do that. Learning to speak like a foreigner in their accent is one of the best ways to learn how to interpret English as a 2nd language. I learned to speak English like a Japanese person, and it's much easier to understand them. You're learning which substitutions they're making due to the limits of their language. English has limits too, like we do not roll r's. Being afraid of offending people has crippled us in many ways. You can bet no foreigner is going to be afraid to try to mimic us. That is a huge advantage.

    My Japanese mother tells me that wearing shoes in the house caused other problems besides tracking in the outside filth. Traditional Japanese houses used (and still use) Tatami mats as floor coverings, and if you walked on them with hard shoes (like Geta), the reeds would break in the mat and you would be left with sharp ends that poked you in the butt when you sat on the mat. This necessitated the early replacement of the mat before it was actually worn out. So, it was seen as not only unsanitary, but very wasteful.

    That's AMAZING! I'm so glad you had such fun on a game show especially one that seemed to be made to find Xiaoman LOL! I'm happy you had fun doing the show. I was on a game show many years ago called Trivial Pursuit America Plays and I was Team America. I'm not an actor so having so many cameras around me and people telling where to stand, how to stand, how to speak was quite the experience. The man who hosted the show was the actor who played Greg Brady from "The Brady Bunch" Barry Williams. I never actually met him I was just recruited in a mall in NJ for the show and I had trivia questions. One of them made the show and because the contestants didn't know the answer Team America won that episode and I was paid $600 USD for a question about crochet. I watched the show religiously when it aired until my episode aired and I recorded it and saved it because I wanted to freak my brother out seeing my face on tv on a game show. It was so great! Unfortunately I was not able to get that episode from the network. I had the money to buy it but there was so much red tape back in the early 2000's and that show was cancelled so sadly I can't get that episode. I can say it was so much fun to film it because I was asked what questions do you think ppl can't answer and I had many. It came down to a very specific question about stitching in crochet that is very different from knitting and while the contestant was close he didn't say crochet. I purposely chose crochet because it's a lost art and while knitting and crochet can look similar and even have similar names for stitches, they are not the same having known how to do both.
    But yes being on a game show is fucking fun!

    Good job on jubilee! As a Chinese American who’s spent over a decade in China, a few things from the video gave away your non-Asianness: 1. When you said “Pocky”; the ultimate goal for an Asian American is to make your parents proud; 2. Favorite part of your culture is almost always food; the thing you said about China resonates more with mainland Chinese; 3. Chinese Americans tend to watch more k-pop, c-pop/k-drama, c-drama than Bollywood.
    Because I can speak fluent Chinese and Cantonese, it’d be much easier for me to tell that you are the mole. Your Chinese is excellent but it does have a tinge of an accent (reminds me of an enthusiastic language learner).
