The Maxpedition Kodiak Gearslinger is an outstanding bag suitable for many different uses. There were three different, but related roles that I wanted to test it in: everyday carry, outdoor/hiking, and tactical. I found good performance in every role I put it in, and I think it can be easily pressed into most roles imaginable. Separate bags dedicated and specialized for each of those roles certainly would have done better, but if you can only afford one quality bag, and you need to fill multiple roles, this Kodiak Gearslinger does an excellent job.
The Kodiak comes in several different colors, including Black, OD Green, Khaki, Foliage Green, Khaki-Foliage, and ACU camo (this review features a Foliage Green sample). It also comes in an "S-Type" version, with all pockets and features mirrored for left-hand use.

I used a Maxpedition Gearslinger Sitka for EDC for over a year. Any sling bag will have the same issue, they're very uncomfortable if you carry more than about 10 pounds in it, and do more than a couple miles of walking. Sling bags suck!
I purchased a Sitka specifically because it has less storage capacity than the Monsoon or the Kodiak (I prefer the look of the monsoon). The bag was well designed for convenience, and getting at gear in a crowded place was very quick and easy. The bag was immensely over designed for carry capacity. I could easily store 20 pounds of gear in the bag without attaching anything to the outside (laptop, water, EDC gear). I found that with anything over about 10 pounds the bag became very uncomfortable if I intended to do any walking over a mile. That's pretty ridiculous for a "hard use gear" bag designed specifically to carry lots of gear with molle everywhere.
I used the bag EDC for over a year. I walked/ran 1.5-3 miles each day (as a part of my mon-fri commute). I often commuted on buses in a crowded urban environment. I wore it on day hikes (5-10 miles), and trail running. I wore it on the motorcycle (commuting, and 1-3 hour joy rides). I used it in the rain as well.
If I reduced my load to 5-10 pounds the bag was comfortable, but basically empty. It left me wondering why I paid so much for a bag that was so robustly designed. Carrying 10 pounds on one shoulder is less comfortable than carrying 20 pounds in a basic frameless 2 strap backpack. A basic 2 strap backpack splits the load between shoulders, and also spreads the weight out across your back a bit. With these gearslinger bags nearly all of the weight is on one shoulder (it impacts your spine, your neck, and your back muscles), the rest of the weight sits in one position slightly off center on your back.
A friend of mine had a monsoon. It fell apart after a year of usage. My Sitka looks as good as the day I bought it after a solid year of use and another year and a half sitting on a shelf after I realized how uncomfortable the thing is.
If you want a bag because it looks cool and are pretty sure you won't ever really need to carry the thing far, Maxpedition Gearslinger bags are awesome! If you actually wear your bag for travel these things are very uncomfortable.
My current primary EDC bag is a Maxpedition Falcon II (which is basically a slightly larger two strap version of the Sitka). I'm very, very happy with the Falcon II.
I’ve had mine for 6 years now and it still looks new. These bags can certainly take whatever you can throw at them. I’m a way late Boy Scout like 9 years.
A video you made 9 years ago is still helping people make decisions… I’m buying the Maxpedition, thank you!
My son is 18 months I have used this as a diaper bag since the day he was born, fits the role perfectly.
Tactical diaper bag... I love it!
really detailed and well structured review, a very enjoyable and informative watch, especially liked the video clips accentuating the points you made. thumbs up
Great review. I find that this bag really excels as an urban EDC and is also a great carry on bag when flying. I use mine every day going to and from the office. It is perfect for my laptop and other electronics with plenty of extra room for other EDC items.
Thank you Sir! I finally have one on order and I'm looking forward to putting it through its paces!
great review !!! high quality definition !! almost perfect .. the best. thank you so much
I own this bag, load placement and total weight is key to keeping it comfortable
great bag. been using mine for 3 years now. still got it and still use it for edc.
Excellent presentation, thank you. I have a Kodiac, I think it's great.
Excelent review sir, thank you for the in depth look at the kodiak gear slinger! I am a newer subscriber but i wish i found your channel sooner. Thanks again.
Drew4078 Glad to help. Thanks for subscribing!
That is a cool bag. Now you have confirmed that I am not only addicted to guns but also Maxpedition items! It was a gradual addiction to Maxpedition as I never even saw it coming!
one hell of review, congrats man. Just ordered the Kodiak thnxs to you. sbbed.
Excellent review and video, always enjoy your vids.
Great review! Was considering a gear slinger for my EDC. This bag will def cover my needs. Thanks for your vid.
Excellent job Sir! I've had my eye on that one for a while now.
Great review, thanks man!
I've been slinging mine since 2010 = ) And i still love it. Still my EDC bag. It's right next to me at this very moment actually, and I never go anywhere without it. Thanks for the vid brother. ~Wolf
Say Heah, Yeah, I just got mine, Aces. Thanx You, Job well done on this review.
Excellent Review! Very detailed on all of the packs functions. I especially like this packs ability to swing to the front while still wearing it to access it's contents. This would be godsend when you constantly need to swap out lenses, cameras, and/or other often used items. This packs going onto my list of possible packs as a BOB (Bug Out Bag).
Best review ever of this bag. Peace
Great review, love Maxpedition!
Gorgeous.
Awesome review, I will defintiely look into it.
Fantastic review brother. Thank you.
looking at this bag now and searched for a review....yours came up...sold....thanks for putting the time into this vid, subbed your channel and look forward to catching up with what you have here and the vids you have in line...been offline awhile, it was good to find a great vid on my first click...have a great day brother...Dennis...ps nice shooting *thumbs up*
I have the same bag. It's great, I use it for a bunch of things too. Range bag, day pack, get home bag.
Awesome bag. Thx for the cus.
I have a lot of bags.
But if I have to choose only one bag, I will choose Kodiak.
Great review!!! Thx👍
I still struggle to find a better bag for all the rolls you described, I still go back to the kodiak. great review
ordered mine, waiting very impatiently XD
Great video awesome job!
Your review has convinced me to Get this bag. I originally didn't want it after I saw the monsoon as it looks better for carrying into work/edc. Looks like imma sell my monsoon and get this one.
great review...2 thumbs up. keep it coming...:)
Realy nice båg sir !
Excellent review
I chose the Malaga due to the single strap. I have back issues and the Gear Slinger series offsets the weight nicely. Having the option to swing it around is back saving for me.
Great review.
Great review!! I didn't know they had a big version of Sitka Gear slinger I got because I found it for a steal online. I absolutely love it as my EDC pack though! I think the Sitka is 15L and the Kodiak is 22.6L. I also have a 5.11 Rush 100 and I'm looking at snagging a Markhor 45. I wasn't entirely happy with the internal organization on the Rush 100. Maxpedition and Vanquest are the best in my opinion!
The Division backpack like.
Great vid, just a quick note. I have the Sitka and instead of bunching all the zipper pulls together I just tread them onto the "popper tab". That secures both top and mid pockets just fine.
Great Review!! Thanks for the info
Very good review man. I really want one now to replace my targus cheapie. Thanks
"You like to try to be into first aid." I'm thinking of starting a video series for gear heads like you to have some more functional knowledge of the first aid gear that floats around on the edc and survival circuit. What you think. I'm a paramedic in San Diego california.
Thats exactly what I've been searching for recently, Im a gearhead and aspiring paramedic!
Great review. I'm looking for a new multi purpose bag right now. I'll have to check this one out.
Nice, I have two laptops one is 14" and one is 15.4" so I guess I could use the Sitka or the Kodiak. I worry the Kodiak may be a bit big, causing me to carry to much. They have a triangle one that is appealing too. But the backpacks are tempting too. Especially if outfitted with Molle additions
OK first the Maxpedition bag are bullet proof and have many different usages. Second your production is superb brother. I strive to make my vids as good as your. Great lay out and different camera angels equals awesome vids. Good job on raising the bar.
I love my Falcon II but I might have to have this one also!
great vid! nice quality :)
Top notch review my friend. You covered 3 scenarios for using this bag & rolled in great footage of you're on going research.
I have been using a Camelbak cloud walker for well over a year now in similar roles. I should probably do a more in depth review of it. I would say works great as an edc & day hike bag, but would be lacking in a tactical role.
Sorry for getting off topic, thanks again for your honest approach in the review.
p.s. great camera angle, must have used a curtain rod : )
One of the best reviews I've seen. And...somehow...I don't know...I feel taller for having watched it.
Nice Outback!
Im not sure how I missed this video but great review my friend. I use a Max Fatboy VP for a truck bag. While it works ok its a bit on the small side. This bag appears to be a much better option for that role.
best review ever
i just wanna know if the Jetboil will match over there where is the water bottle ?
very, very good review! The shotgun segment was awesome. The CCW looks good. Does the shoulder strap only connect to the one bottom corner, or is it ambi?
Excellent review! What shotgun shell carrier is that on the tactical demo??
Do you think a PAP M82 will fit diagonally in the main compartment with a folded stock?
Very very nice review sir. I have been trying to figure out which of their bags is right for me and which would be right for my wife. Our uses would be a combination of all three scenarios you mentioned. One question, when using the bag to hold your handgun is it retained in some way or loose inside the back? I could not tell but it appeared to be. Would you recommend this bag for camping at all? say 2-3 days of 'ruffing it.' or would you need something bigger? thanks again for a great review!
Where do we get the two bags you carry around your waist. Looks like a neat idea easy access.
I watched a review of the Gearslinger Sitka and they had a jetboil flash they kept in that pocket. I would imagine so.
Great review! Question? Do you like the 5.11 Tactical Bags or Backpack? And If so, What do you think about 5.11 Rush MOAB 10 bag?
Big Sam
I have Rush 72. badass bag man
Like my Kodiak wish you could get the backpacks with the same organization areas as kodiak yours was the only video that covered two straps compared to one strap which in my opion is very important because after taking this pack on a couple of trips about three miles each in this situation I would much prefer to straps
Great videos man. Just sub'd !!
How many water bottles can get in the main compartment?
Holy hell!!!!!!!!!!!! My question was where were you filming yourself on the hike? It looks like a place that I've hiked. Mt. Elbert
i plan to buy kodiak gearslinger as for everyday to school, with 13in laptop and notebook to write and ipad air with otterbox defender case. will the bag fit these item? I also plan on travel oversea wonder what is max dimension of this as in when it full? will this water splash resist or if rain will it wet my stuff inside
will this consider tsa friendly?
what was that sheemock thing?
I have the smallest one in the line (Noatak) and maybe I'm a wimp, but when I pack that full it gets uncomfortable fairly fast.
what shotgun pouch is that in the video at 13:43?
Anyone know what color the bag is in ?
@TheLateBoyScout thanks
What color is that holmes
Do you think it will fit under plane seat??
I've flown with it before, yes it does.
It's notr ambi, but you might be able to buy it in either side carry, like you can their jumbo bags. I'm not sure tho = ) ~Wolf
Subaruuuuuuuuuu!
no offense because this pack is great my friend has one but if you can't shell out a 130 for a pack i found another one almost identical to this one for 60 dollars on seller that is military contractor that condor makes. its a bit smaller and not as comfortable. however the sling is ambidextrous and its still pretty durable i have tested it and it works just as fine in Florida's swamps
I think you were meaning "active shooter bag" when you were using the shotgun.
Here's a game
Take a shot every time he says items
the pygmii falcon is a better bag for me cause i don't like shoulder strap's
Great review ... except for the Macbook. ;) lol
I had that bag and its too big for one shoulder.
I love this bag but it's just to big for a gear slinger type carry, I find it gets too uncomfortable after 5-10min of walking with even just a medium weight of 15-20 pounds. I'm going for the VANQUEST Trident 20 Litres Backpack with 2 straps, I don't think there's any use for a gear slinger type bag unless you really just want it for a gun holster, I mean it's not that much of an effort to just take one side of your strap off & swing the bag around if you need anything with a 2 strap bag. Just another opinion.
$180.00 lil spendy for what you getting a mini alice pack could be just as capable with 2 shoulder straps and at a drastically less cost.
What mountain wee
I chose this bag because it's bigger than Sitka... bad decision. Now I have falcon2 for hikes, Sitka for edc, Kodiak sits on the shelf.Kodiak is too big for singlestrap bag. If you are planning to walk with this more than 10 minutes, don't buy it. This bag has plenty of room, you're gonna fill it, and than you're gonna hate yourself.
Sorry my il
It does not look like you can switch sides. No thanks.

This sling pack is terrible, if it had 2 straps it would be great. Walking from the house to the car is fine but put 10lbs in it and walk 10 miles, you'll regret the day you bought it.
why am i getting womens make up commercials for maxpedition gear?
