Maxpedition Kodiak Gearslinger: Not Your Daddy's Briefcase

- A review of the Maxpedition Kodiak in an "off-label" use. Even though it is not designed to function as a laptop/briefcase bag, a couple of minor adjustments make it a fabulous replacement for my old SwissGear backpack style laptop bag/briefcase. This review focuses on using the bag as a daily office bag, rather than using it as a hiking/backpacking/adventuring bag. Another excellent bag from Maxpedition!

Ditto Skidoc's comment as well.
I have a neoprene sleeve but the Braincell seems to up the edge protection to the next level!
Looks like a great compliment.
@03BigBear I agree....can't fault it for not doing what it wasn't designed for! I've solved the padding issue and am still using it as a daily bag w/my mac. Great bag all around. Thanks for the comment.
Nice Bag!!
good points and good review, hope you enjoy your max. :)
Hi,
I bought the Kodiak and loved it, but yes, it gets very heavy on one strap. In that case the Sitka is much more comfortable.
The design is so great that you dont want to discart it as a everyday bag, so if you keep it simple, the Sitka will be your best friend in town.
For outdoors, I would have to go with the Falcon II. Much better in distributing weight.
thanks skidoc....this would be my use for this bag too....everyday laptop briefcase...
I have used messenger bags and don't like the way they slide off my shoulder...and don't care for putting them over my head...
I just might order one today!
the gearslinger series are intended mainly for the convenience of one strap and ease of accessing items from
swinging bag around with out taking it off. not intended for max weight capacity. with that being said the Kodiak is the largest of the gearslinger to allow for large laptops and probably does push the limits. my gaming laptop weighs 14 pounds by itself. but when I use the bag for day hikes I can fill the bag and comfortably carry it because that space is taken up with lighter things like a fleece jacket and a poncho.
@bigbuckaroo2 This one doesn't drop off my shoulder, but if I go no hands. On it, it will rotate suddenly to where the heaviest part of the bag is at the bottom of the sling. That was a big surprise the first time it happened, but absolutely a function of the basic laws of physics. As long as i keep one hand on the bag, tho, it doesn't rotate and stays on my shoulder. Also, keep in mind the main compartment is not padded. It is a great bag and I'm still using it as a edc briefcase.
Thanks MNdigger...it is, indeed!
great bag I use it as my office lol. I love this bag
@seancreepy I think you are right to worry about the weight issue. If you have to carry moderate to heavy loads regularly, I"d check out some of Maxpedition's two-strap packs such as Falcon, Vulture, or Condor. I posted a 2 year use review on my Kodiak bag a couple of months ago and I still think the weight problem is a significant issue. Good luck with your shopping, and thank you for watching and for your comment! Cheers!
@jacksonhole99 Thank you for your comment! I love the ease of front access for the Kodiak, especially in situations like yours when you can quickly rotate it around without having to go through all the gymnastics of taking a standard pack off your back. Interesting idea you have of un-clipping the larger strap and leaving the small one attached. I'll have to try that. Do you not have to hang onto the upper end of the large strap to keep the pack in position when it's on your back?
@faranglaw Thanks! I am enjoying it. I recently picked up it's little brother, the Sitka and will do a comparison review when I am well enough to do more recording. Have a great weekend!
@darrensylvander Thanks for the comment! The Brain Cell looks like a brilliant idea! I checked out a vid on it and it looks like a great solution for this bag. If you buy the Brain Cell I hope you'll post a vid showing it used with your Kodiak. If so, post it as a video reply to my video so all my friends can see your idea in action! Cheers!
@htownninja1 Yea I did look at those and they didn't have the impact protection I am looking for. I have settled on another bubble wrap envelope for now. It is not very pretty but it is highly effective and the Mac is easy to get in and out of the envelope when it is inside the main compartment. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
@arnoldsimage Thanks for the comment Arnold! I've been using a bubble wrap mailer that allows me to easily slide the laptop in and out of the mailer and it stays inside the bag. It is working great. Bubble wrap is the way to go!
@ManFromMassachusetts Thanks for your comments. I completely agree with you about the one strap design. I would NOT use a sling style pack for any backpacking or carrying any significant weight in it, certainly not over any distance. Gravity works, and the sling tends to rotate on the shoulder so that the pack is at the bottom of the sling, somewhere around the hip. Have you seen the Ribz pack? Seanmulhall has a vid series on it. That looks really interesting! Cheers!
You need the S-type.. it's set up opposite to go across the other shoulder
@robknasel, at the time I bought the Kodiak, I was carrying a 17 in MacBook and I didn't think the Sitka was tall enough in the main compartment. I have downsized to a 15 in laptop so the Sitka would be a good choice. I figure when this one wears out I'll go back to a double-strap bag. Thanks for the suggestion, I've put the Icon on the top of my research list! Thanks for the comment and for watching. Cheers!
You should look into getting a neoprene sleeve for the Mac it self. Just a thought. Nice Vid.
Did you try the Sitka? Might want to. I agree on the Padding for the Laptop. I think the Oakley Icon 3.0 would be a better bag for you. I have carried that bag for a year now. Comes in Desert Tan, which is very Tactical looking. Have mine for sale on ebay now for $119.00 Ordered the Sitka Kodiak today
I've had a maxpedition monsoon for 6 years and i used it as an everyday bag as well as a bag for hiking around Australia. As an everyday bag it was great, but it's triangular design didn't lend itself to square laptops and books. The one strap was annoying when wearing an open jacket because I constantly had to readjust and shift my weight a bit. For heavy loads, it had a nice big strap for the hips which has been a ligesaver, I am a bit concerned that the kodiak doesn't have this kind of strap, but instead has a thinner strap just to keep the bag from moving around. I can imagine the kodiak bag isn't suited for long hikes with lots of gear, but then again that isn't what it was designed for. It's a nice bag with plenty of room and easy access, and would do nicely for hikes with a light load, it would also be a great choice for a photographer (but again it needs padding). But if you want to go on long hikes or travel with lots of gear then you need two straps and hip support.
nice
It would be great to see how you put on your kodiak and how you take off your kodiak Maxpedition bag.
@Hafnium Psi, Recently I have been packing a much heavier load in my Kodiak and while the bag is holding up well, my poor shoulder is not! What's worse is that the heavier load seems to be tweaking my back about half the time. I'm seriously starting to think of putting the old Kodiak up on eBay and shopping for something with two slings on it! Thanks for your comment and for watching!
I know this video is old, but they make laptop sleeves now, that the laptop just slides into, and that would solve the padding issues.
How about a 15in. computer and a bible and some folders/papers, etc? Would that be too heavy for this one strap bag?
IMO the Kodiak and Sitka are best used for urbane commuters who have the burden of carrying their laptop long distances while taking up as little space in tight areas like subway trains and buses.
You just need a bag to carry your laptop a short distance while not spilling your coffee. Why not use a messenger bag or man purse?
how much was it
@Samson8171 I got mine from eBay back in March 2010 for $138.95 including shipping.
cant complain that it has no padding for your mac....it was not designed to do so.
like yur coffee problem, single strap does not work for me.
bubble wrap your laptop, then put in bag.
CHINA GROVE!!!!!!!
