- Nintendo games have great music. Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Luigi's Mansion - Nintendo knows how to write a tune! But it turns out many of these songs have unknown and unheard parts to them, older versions which you might not know or parts which were completely cut. My first realization that we don't always hear all of a video game song came in Mega Man 3, when I found out that pausing as you drop into a Proto Man area let you hear more of his whistle song.

Same here. On top of that, there's a lot more to the game's ending song which uses Proto Man's theme, heard while Megaman is walking left through the woods. A whole new section can be heard past the point where Proto Man's face appears in the sky if you play the soundtrack via a NSF file (ordinarily, the music abruptly changes when the screen transitions to the staff credits).

The best part about Luigi humming the Luigi’s Mansion theme is that it becomes shakier and more high pitched the lower your health. As Luigi gets more nervous and scared, his humming actively reflects it

This seems to be a little know fact because every time the early Mario Sunshine theme is talked about no one knows why it is still in the game's files. This is because it is actually is still used! If you wait on the starting "Press Start" screen for long enough, a demo of the game will start playing showing you all the areas and things to do in the game, and the background music? You guessed it, is the Space world theme. Just an interesting reuse for the song.

Exactly! Tho it is partially correct:
the track used in the demo is actually embedded in the video and so it also contains some sound effects of Mario. But there is actually a separate track with no sound effects that's not used anywhere!
Never forget Koji Kondo wrote ALL the music in OoT. No wonder he stepped back from composing afterwards.

I remember when all there were was Zelda one and two. I really liked the similarities/differences between those songs. I didn't find it inferior, just a twist. Zelda two is my favorite game ever tho. Then, A Link to the Past came out and I never really questioned it again. Classic overhead Zelda style, different sound and aesthetic. It's all great to me.

Actually Super Mario sunshine’s original music is found in the game and when I played it I found it unintentionally if you watch the cutscenes until the part when Mario says the games name and you wait a little more you’ll hear the music and some gameplay of the full game I remember I was shocked to find that out

I kind of would’ve liked to have heard twilight princess’ alternate take on hyrule field in the game. I still like the amazing hyrule field theme that we got, but still, maybe it could’ve been for some other part of the game?

I hope Luigi's mansion 3 feels more like the first Luigi's mansion. Abit darker and less comedic than dark moon. Yes, dark moon was really good, but it wasn't as dark. It seemed a bit too cutesy, not what I was looking for.

19:04 That Part B... It really sounds familiar. In fact, I'm pretty confident that it was mixed in for a part of the Dark World Death Mountain theme, "Black Mist" from a Link to the Past
The part B music is used in many mario bros games including super mario vs, the lost levels, mario bros 3, mario 64, and many more mario games. It's just not used in the original mario bros release. It should sound familiar.
Nah you crazy, the final theme is spooky af. The beta theme sounds like a Luigi's Mansion-themed party that's about to break out into a dance beat at any second. It's like the definition of funk.

To me it sounds more like Christmas music. Towards the end of the A section it sounds like the song "O Christmas Tree/O Tannenbaum."

I only had Mario All Stars, so I've only ever known the AABA version. :D

@@GlacialSiren484 In SMB1&LL in All-Stars, the physics for hitting bricks feels messed up as mario doesn't go back down right away after bumping a brick... There's a rom hack that fixes the problem for SMB1 though. Wonder if applying it to LL would work?

When you beat SMB3, they "fixed" the ending song too (the whole AABA plays from SMB1 and then the new ending theme plays).
*Didn't You Know?* Nintendo actually was planning on having Twilight Princess be an edgier remake of Ocarina of Time. However, once play-testers saw Dead Hand in his dark 480p gory glory, the developers were forced to make Twilight Princess it's own game out of fear that some elements in Ocarina of Time would force the game to be rated M.
Sheesh, Ocarina of time was originally meant to be rated M but due to hardware limitations they couldn't store every letter of the alphabet so they had to scrap some letters, including m.

The OG Sunshine theme is honestly really cool.
Ever since my dad mentioned how we can only take in so much sound at one time you'll often hear parts you may of forgot or never even noticed before. I still to this day find parts in songs that make me go WAIT THAT'S BEEN IN THIS SONG THE ENTIRE TIME?!
This is often a soft bass or some lower drum noise but is also often synths literally anything that could be easily overpowered by a more dominate sound wave or whatever science...
Btw, the song from spaceworld for sunshine is also the song that plays on the game demo if you wait long enough at the title screen!

I really wouldn't say inferior for either twilight princess or Zelda 2, I would say different as both are still nice songs in their own right and you are probably a lot more nostalgic to the original songs of those games giving it a unfair bias against the composed songs for the others. I would say although yes both songs borrow from the originals that doesn't necessarily mean they are bad or inferior. As Ashes mother says in the fantastic Mr fox movie they "Are just *waves hands around* different.".
Zelda 2 music sucks and you can't change my mind, twilight was cool though.
Yeah I quite like the Adventure of Link and Twilight Princess Hyrule themes, and I particularly like that the Adventure of Link ties the theme back to the first game's before putting on its own twist.

Thanks for talking about diegetic and non-diegetic music, because I've been wondering if there is a word to differentiate music that the characters at least could hear and music that they can't - especially as they can both be used as background music (diegetic in that case, being a song playing on the radio in the background - the characters could at least be aware of it, even if it is used essentially as background music for the scene.)
Also, as an aside, I'm actually more familiar with the unused version that song for Luigi's Mansion - I've never owned the game (I've played it at least once, though), but that preview you included used to play all the time on a TV channel named GameNetwork (which doesn't exist anymore as far as I can tell) so I remember watching it a lot back then, and am familiar with the music - it kind of brought it back a little seeing it again. :)
Glad you played the ending Mario music at the end of the video that sped up a section repeating with pause while describing it and introducing the b section caused me to miss how it would flow. Also beat Mario 2 J (aka lost levels) but on the switch version and kinda feel like I never noticed the key change so now I gotta drudge my way thru that PITA game to check the sound on the switch.

It's not the number of channels, it's what they can do.
An Amiga only has 4 audio channels, and so does a gameboy, but the kind of sound they produce is vastly different.

The Mario Sunshine theme is oddly in the Demo mode. I never waited for a demo mode at the beginning so I never knew it was in the game.
Oh yeah, that thing! I waited for it once, and recognized the section that comes from the SMB Underwater theme and was like "Hey I recognize that!"

"Limitation breeds creativity." At first, limitations are forced on an artist. Eventually the limitations are lifted but, by the time this happens, the artist has grown wiser, and so, they impose limitation on themselves. The difference now, is that the artist gets to choose the boundaries, and they are free to brake those rules when they see fit. Just think of all the retro style inde games!

The fact that the ghosts also hum the song means they were always listening to luigi humming. Gives you a new perspective of the game. No matter where you are in the mansion, you are being listened to and watched.

Aw, I was waiting for you to talk about the story of Super Mario Galaxy's Gusty Garden Galaxy, where the composer was challenged by Koji to create something adventurous and happy, but everytime the composer came up with something, Koji Kondo would scrap it. I think that when Koji gave that composer one last chance to create something good, the composer gave us the Gusty Garden Gallaxy we all know and love
