I was sent the XTU S3 Pro to review... Unfortunately at first it wasn't very good at all as the Image Stabilisation was really poor as was the Audio/Visual synchronisation. Nevertheless, they sent me a firmware update and that improved things massively!
Is it any good?
Would I buy it?

UPDATE:
I've since found that AKASO V50 batteries fit this, although not perfectly!
They're the same depth but slightly shorter - nevertheless the connectors are identical. The Akaso battery can be dropped into place onto the connectors and when the case is close it holds the battery in place.

Thanks so much for your very helpful remarks - l guess the old adage that you get what you pay for is very much in play here! Looks like it could be a decent camera for b roll footage so l might well give it a shot! I would probably avoid using it in low light though but that said how many budget cameras (or any action cameras for that matter) do well in low light!!! I've already subscribed to your channel so will be keeping up with all your goings on from here in the US. Thanks again and happy new year to you.

Certainly appreciated watching your video - thanks for putting it out. Just curious but in your video you mentioned that a recent firmware was likely to have improved stuff that you had not captured in your video. Did the firmware update actually improve stabilization, picture quality and audio in any appreciable way? Looking at videos on youtube the earlier model appeared to out perform it's successor model but l'm hoping that you'll confirm that the update made all the difference particularly with regard to picture quality and stabilization! Thanks again for your effort in putting out such good content😊

I just purchased this camera and I find that it is excellent for the value. Love the uncomplicate menu. I had the GoPro 8 and I returned it because by the time you set it up you forget what you have done. Just want a straight forward camera. I shoot 1080 because it is easy to use. Yes this camera can shoot 4K. Thanks for your video. I subscribed and gave you a thumbs up. Oh what firmware update?
Thank you for your kind words and I'm glad you liked the video. I contacted the company when I got the camera because I was having issues and they sent a firmware update to rectify it.
Useful to have a spare camera for when you drop your main one in the sea! And it's always frustrating when you check the footage on your main camera and find there had been water on the lens so the shots are useless. The tricky thing I find is getting good mounting points on the kayak
😅 yup, I have had a camera end up in the drink before. I take it you leash your camera to the boat?

My apologies - l have just read your entire post and you obviously answered my question! If stabilization is now massively better than your video had suggested l'm guessing that as a budget action camera it must stack up pretty well against its competition! Was the general picture quality improved as well as the audio? Again thanks!
It's ok, but not great. In my latest video (Christmas Kayaking) I used the S3 on the floating rig and for several bits of footage through the video - setting off, a couple paddle past shots, the tree landing in the water + I'd left it on while Raf fished the Christmas tree out of the water!
In low light (setting off) it's not great, but the footage is better as the light improves. The audio in the vid is predominantly the GoPro. The S3 audio is ok, but a bit tinny.
Now I know why I've not got my memory card back lol.

I guess there's a reason why GoPro is such a big name in this game. I've been thinking about getting a camera myself and (maybe!) putting some videos online (kayaking / golf mainly) and this review was really helpful. I think I may end up plumping for the GoPro - Hero 7 Black (as the price of those is really good right now...). Great video mate.

Seems ok. I have an Akaso Brave 7 which seems pretty similar in specs and build. I couldn't face the expense of a Go Pro as I only really use my action cam for walk and talk and bad weather. I'm waiting on the next DJI Osmo or Pocket perhaps...
Yeah they are a price, but that's why I went for the Hero 7 Black. It dropped in price when a newer model came out plus you often benefit from a lower price and more updated firmware whereas the newer models tend to have teething problems. And to be quite candid, the features of the newer models are seldom worth the extra £££

How long does the battery last? Also this or a 2nd hand DJI osmo action?
I couldn't say how long the battery lasts although I suspect longer than the GoPro and probably the DJI - mostly because there's less processing going in during recording.
As for the choice - DJI Osmo Action, all the way!

They are indeed Des. The XTU feels so much more substantial just holding it in your hand, which is why it surprised me when it initially failed so badly. Nevertheless, as I say, at least the firmware update fixed the problems :)
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner What are your thoughts on the sounds? It seemed a little muffled compared to the Gopro, but not too bad. Poor sound was one of the biggest issues these type of cameras used to suffer IMO
@@DesGreene I don't think the sound is great. Having said that, Ainsley in the comments said he preferred the XTU to the GoPro because it was less 'spatial'.
You might have noticed I didn't express too much in the way of opinion on the quality of output, mostly because people tend to appreciate different aspects and I didn't want to sway in my direction.
I noticed on the water level pix were darker but richer, the GoPro looks a bit overlit in the same shots. I quite like the dji tbh. No mention of prices which I will admit annoys me most, when you're watching and thinking can I afford waiting for the price and it doesn't come, I swear a bit. Now I have to go and find out. I do understand the thing of where you watch in the world and when lark.
When they first sent this to me it was around £130. Today when I checked it's £110 with a £10 voucher off. Between editing and upload prices can change dramatically and I risk making myself look like I'm full of bull. That's why I prefer to add links in the description and pinned comment. If I've bought a bargain I'll tend to be upfront about that. Does that make sense?
And it is interesting that you preferred the XTU over the GoPro, because I think the XTU is too dark... I purposefully avoided being too opinionated in the video because personal preference does play a big part :D
11:00 That door is fussy. Mine broke the third time I opened it, the lock tab is brittle plastic. Returned it to Amazon for refund.
That was disappointing because otherwise, I think the S3 is a great performer! It's on-board microphone is the best among the budget action cams.
I know what you mean about the doors, they're very stiff.
And I agree, for the money it's a good little camera. I've shriek used it more than I thought I would 👍😊
Hi, I have a cheap national geographic one (which I think is a rebadged bressers one). For the odd time I've used it I have found it quite adequate. When I have finally finished building my canoe then I will be using it a lot more. Keep up the good ?

I actually think the sound is better. It's more directional whereas the go pro sounded a tad weak and spatial.
Interesting 😁 Both of them when synchronised together sounded really good.

Hi Earl... In all honesty I have no idea. I was sent this to review and have no experience with the previous model. I'm guessing with the pro version they've upgraded/updated some features but I couldn't say what they might be.
