      I just watched it and it was very moving. This was a fantastic review and very funny (I have a similar dry sense of humor 😄). I have always been a huge Sia fan and love her music but am so disappointed by how she's handled this whole thing. I don't feel she had any bad intentions with making the film but the way she has responded to the criticism of people who she is claiming to represent is just so disturbing. I have an autistic child in my family & have always had a deep love for autistic children (even before I had one as a family member) and used to volunteer at an after school program for them. I've also written articles about autism for an online magazine I used to write for (it's autism awareness month btw)! The majority of the kids I worked with personally were mostly non-verbal (although I think I heard they changed that to non speaking)? I know Sia claims that she based the movie on a friend's autistic child but I can't help but wonder how much time she's actually spent with him or any other autistic people. I wish she'd maybe volunteered to work with some autistic children herself or spent some time getting to know some of them better before making the film. I feel like it would've been a very different movie if she had 😕

    This film is so harmful because of its portrayal of autism. Many autistic people (especially mild forms) are severe pressured to stay quiet about their diagnosis and “act normal.” This portrayal just validates a lot of their decisions to stay quiet about their diagnosis out of fear of it negatively effecting their job or relationships, or out of fear of being treated in a condescending and demeaning way.

    Music might be the greatest example I could point out to as "Allybrain" where Sia is championing herself as the ultimate ally to the autism community...without actually putting any thought or consideration to the community she's representing.
    Like I had heard the plot was bad as Zu is actually the main character and Music herself is more the background plot...but holy crap, I had no idea about the plot involving Felix. Or the Ebo had an autistic brother who died cause in Ghana they view Autism as some kind of curse. This is like a bad after school special about the danger of drugs (not tolerance or anything relevant) that happens to feature musical vignettes. And the more you look at it, the more it feels like a gigantic ego trip.
    So she makes a movie that features an autistic girl who loves Sia's music, that imagines/performs music videos based on Sia's music, featuring Sia as a character and someone points out Sia's look. And what teaches people a lesson to respect autistic people is to use Sia's music is a conduit and way of communication. And there's so much else to question with Sia's way-to-close relationship with Maddie...how she seemed to have no idea about the history of Autism Speaks or the danger of restrainment.
    Just...wow. This is a very good video, I do think it's very thorough and a lot more detailed than most other videos that do coverage on the subject.

  • @ninavale.
    @ninavale. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +95

    I've said it on other videos but...how does this movie even take off when Zu doesn't want to take care of Music? Custody isn't an easy thing, you can't just walk in and BAM you're a carer now. It's a LEGAL MATTER. It's decided by a court. Zu isn't Music's biological parent. She doesn't HAVE parental rights or obligations. She's Music's sister and siblings don't get automatic custody. Not even when parent's are dead. A non-parent has to file a petition in court in order to obtain custody. Then they have to prove themselves capable of being able to provide for the child/charge. But Zu DOESN'T WANT to care for Music. She would've been contacted as next of kin but as-again- nonparent she wouldn't have to formally give up custody. Her grandmother writing her a letter or smth doesn't legally bind her either. Because it's not a formal will, she's not given it by a lawyer or anyone like that. This movie doesn't make sense right off the gate.

    You've perfectly described, why we can't believe Sia, when she said she's going to remove the restraint scenes.
    The only way to fix this movie is to scrap it, pull it from cinemas, pull it from digital shops, don't give it to streaming services and don't release it on DVD or Blu Ray.

    • @Ember_Green
      @Ember_Green  3 ปีที่แล้ว +77

      She actually does speak at times throughout the film, as I pointed out. "Nonverbal" doesn't necessarily mean "literally can't ever talk". And it isn't framed that way or I would have said so. It was framed as Zu realising she's a person, which is just as bad.
      However the music videos *are* to be seen as her wanting to be less disabled, because in them, she isn't.

    16:51 from what I’ve heard from autistic folk, the messing up of routine seems to me at least more like salt on the wound. You lose someone incredibly important and for a lot of people, autistic or not, structure is very needed in that time to get through the day, but then you don’t have that structure making it harder to get through. It seems more to me like the things most people rely on are taken away when needed most.
    Like if my mom died, I’d NEED to be able to get back to my normal day to say just to somewhat function. And I don’t need a caretaker or anything like that. Almost everyone I’ve met is like that. So losing someone important but also a caretaker? And then on top of that no structure? It looks like losing at least 3 separate things. I can’t even imagine that **much** loss in one sitting.

    about 15 years ago I was taught a safety restraint by a therapist (I can not speak to whether its still a used technique) for a child I was caring for. It was a sitting restraint, and no I'm not describing it, these things should only ever be taught by professionals, and even WAY back them I was told over and over, never use it unless the child or others where in Direct Immediate danger, not things only people, and NEVER restrain anyone in a prone position. Any one doing research on any such thing would have most definitely found those warning, which means Sia had already decided how she wanted the scene to go and be dammed if any reality was going to get in the way.

As a support worker who's trained in restraints, it's known that they're an absolute last resort after all other deescalation's been tried, and should be the least restrictive possible for the shortest time possible, and only if the person is in immediate danger of harming themselves or others - you'd think in 3 years of research on a film where restraint is a part of the plot, she'd have stumbled upon that fact.

      absolutely, this is how you know sia knows absolutely nothing about the autistic community and it's frankly laughable to think she did 3-4 years of research. meltdowns are already very stressful and overwhelming, having some man you don't know as an autistic woman or girl pin you down and also keeping you from doing any kind of stimming to try and regulate as much as you can, would be terrifying and extremely distressing. Portraying a random man forcibly restraining an autistic girl and saying "I'm crushing her with my love" is actually so ridiculously tone deaf and ignorantly unaware especially considering the extremely high rates of sexual abuse against females (for lack of better term) with autism.

    I (neurotypical so take this with a grain of salt) feel like they could have had a scene with restraint if they showed how bad and dangerous it is in order to teach the audience.
    Like maybe Zu uses it out of instinct or because that´s what she knows from the media and then Ebo intervenes, helps Music and explains why restraint is bad.
    Or maybe it´s the other way around, with Ebo and Zu already dating, him not having experience with autism (and therefore no longer being a magical black person trope) and Zu educating him.
    So then you have one meltdown with horrible consequences, maybe Music withdrawing from everyone but Felix, maybe her landing in the hospital because of the physical injuries and one later (maybe when she learns of Felix´ death) where through grown understanding proper steps are taken, she is safe and the aftermath is more like how it usually is. Maybe zooming out from her sleeping to show Zu looking at her lovingly, film over.

      Or have Ebo do it and go for a more complicated view on Ebo and autistic acceptance. Hes from a culture where knowledge is low, and hes doing his best, but hes almost certainly got some bad practices. Much better than the current plot that all but says "look at what those savages did, not like Ebo, hes a good one". Make it more about access and opportunity to learn with people doing their best with what they have.
      Hell, it would even make it a better romance story if we want to keep the focus on those two. Start out eith her idolising Ebo as someone who can teach her how to be a carer, and Ebo feeling like he can't be vulnerable about his own difficulties with being a carer, and then progress to both realising they're both flawed and trying their best and seeking out additional reasources to help themselves and one another. Much more compelling romance arc than just "they were kinda near each other". Also don't fridge Ebo's sibling. Why was that done?!

    While this movie was absolutely terrible, it did shine a light on how borderline abusive pretty much *every* adult in Maddie's life has been. Sia is creepily obsessed with her and it seems like she never gets much say in what she gets to do... Maddie apparently didn't want to play an autistic character. Honestly, Music seems like a pretty good representation of how Adults (especially Sia) see and treat Maddie...

      I’ve never held Maddie accountable for this dumpster fire due to her age at the time of filming and how she had very little say in anything involving her career. Kate Hudson on the other hand is so much better than this.Her mom is Goldie Hawn and is Hollywood royalty with her Oscar win and Kate has been set for life and her career wasn’t suffering when she agreed to be a part of Music.

    So incredibly demoralizing how this gets funding but its so hard to get our own stories told, and its so rare to ever see ourselves in movies, games and books. In a better world this ableist mess would have ruined Sia and everybody involveds career forever, but also I know that neurotypicals don't care about us at all.
    The only shows I ever saw, in my nearly 30 years, that explicitly portrayed someone like me in an accurate way, were the She-Ra reboot with Entrapta (and even here there are some incredibly ableist scenes being shown as oh so cute and funny, and parts of the crew was very gross and ableist on twitter and riled the fandom up against disabled fans), and Dead End Paranormal with Norma, and then two books written by actually autistic queer people, the Star Trek like space opera Failure to Communicate by Kaia Sonderby with Xandri, and the dystopia An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon with Aster.

    I have a LOT to say about this film, but I will try to keep it more brief.
    The main point of it all is that, this film is not about Autism, it is about a girl with intellectual disability in need of pretty high level care so that she can live a comfortable quality of life. She happens to have also have autism, but it is absolutely not the main part of it and by saying that it is people erroneously relate the two as a common occurrence. 31% of children with Autism also have intellectual disability. That's not half, it's not even a quarter. Her struggle is intellectual disability, because Music would be a person who can not take care of themselves by themselves. There are plenty of autists who can absolutely function, so claiming that it's autism from the get go is wrong. And by equating the two as the same, you damage both people with intellectual disability and those on the spectrum from getting whatever aid they may require or is useful to them.
    She should of been immediately differed and on a list of people who are in need of care to maintain their quality of life and safety the moment it was discovered that her primary care taker passed away.
    The movie doesn't give a damn about Music and her well being. That's the sick part. There is no thought that a young girl with disabilities and autistic related struggles is in need of various tools and lifestyle structures that help her live her life to the fullest.
    Beyond that, it focuses on what I call "Unicorn syndrome" in that if you are deviant (from a non-emotionally charged point of view, but deviant as in, you are in a minority, not deviant as in bad, divergent) or otherwise different, you must have a beautiful perfect little world you live in, especially if you are too "stupid" to be aware or look like you're unaware. You're not allowed to be a person with struggles, thoughts feelings and flaws if you are anywhere near what people consider disabled. You're the underdog. The champion who is there to be a poster child to inspire everyone else that if you can make it, they can too. You're not a person. You're a prop to make others feel better about themselves and a convenient way for them to ignore when you're actually suffering, because you can't suffer, you're the special perfect unicorn, the secret genius. The world can't be cruel and unfair even though we routinely acknowledge it, because that would mean we as a society have responsibility to make lives better for those who sometimes get short ends of the stick. No, you're the underdog, you have to be the balance and succeeding because otherwise that calls into question a lot about society and how we think about others, especially when it comes to misfortune and strife.
    It's disgusting. It's insanely damaging and it taps into something another overarching societal fallacy that I call the underdog: kick the dog. People love tales of people winning against all odds, they don't like the reality that there are more losers than winners, because it indicates to them that one day, they are very likely to be a loser. It also points out that we don't spend enough resources engaging in empathy, human rights and humane treatment towards others who otherwise might need a little or a lot of help living decent quality of life and often even longevity.
    There are no humans when it comes to a variety of disabilities, divergencies or deviations. No, it's monsters, "retards" and special needs. You're not allowed to both have some form of disability, struggle with it, but also be a person with thoughts, dreams, hopes, fears, insecurities and insights to the world around you. Because shocker, if you were seen as a human being, then you have to be treated as one. We can't afford that. Either economically or socially.
    This was a bit dark, but I'm mostly venting how Music makes me feel and how I interpret it as a much wider problem overall in regards to misfortune, struggle or just divergency in others that we see in society. We are slowly getting better. But there is a fundamental core of people not wanting to admit that sometimes "life isn't fair" and to have the courage to continue that sentence and say "so let's make it as fair as possible for as many as possible."

Like Maddie, Shia Labeouf appeared in one of Sia's many music videos and has worked with the singer. However, unlike Maddie, Shia does have at least one acting credit to his name. the casting of Hudson was most likely done so that 14 year old Maddie felt comfortable on set.

      Kate Hudson should have known what a disaster this movie was going to be. She is so much better than this and the fact her mom is Goldie Hawn makes her involvement even worse. Goldie has told Kate not to accept roles that would harm her career and reputation before. Kate is basically Hollywood royalty. She wasn’t so desperate for money that she accepted the role just to buy some groceries. Kate deserves blame for making Music even worse than it already was.

I saw this film yesterday and I had a nice experience. To me, any Sia's personal storyline had like zero relevance in it. Sia has EDS. It’s heavily associated with autism and is even one cause of autism because it is a genetic collagen mutation that structures the brain differently, aka not neurotypical. There is a very good possibility that Sia is high functioning and on the autism spectrum. I personally have both.
    EDS effects anything with collagen so, everything in your body. EDS leaves you prone to organ ruptures, joint dislocations, lack of oxygen to the brain, ataxia, tachycardia, gastroperesis, brain aneurism, sudden death and so much more.
    EDS is an invisible disability and we go through life being confronted for stuff like this, being called weird, freaks. liar, faker, attention seeking etc. and that is exactly what is going on here.
    EDS gives us thick stretchy skin and an elastic heart that stretches to the point it snaps and bursts. And another one bites the dust.
    The reverse ableism thrown at Sia is astounding and I think you owe Sia an apology. Sia owes no apology.
    EDS is one of the most excruciating disorders around when things break down and it’s deadly. Sia is not as able as you might think, and is much closer to the autistic community than you might think too.

    • @Ember_Green
      @Ember_Green  2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I know what EDS is as I am being screened for it currently (hEDS). It does not give you any insight into autism & many autistic people with EDS also hate this movie. Sia apologised & disappeared for a reason. She knows she messed up.

    • @lucyla9947
      @lucyla9947 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Having one disability doesn't mean you can't be ableist to members of another disabled community. And "Music" is definitely harmful to the Autistic Community, and if she had done any substantial research or consulted with Autistic people several of the issues in the film would have been identified early enough for it to have been changed to better represent the community.

    • @Albinojackrussel
      @Albinojackrussel ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Lol having a connective tissue disorder = basically the same as being autistic.
      Guess we can also diagnose Sia with ADHD, OCD, PoTS, insomnia, sleep apneas, MCAS, fibromyalgia, hardness of hearing (EDS is associated with a few different hearing issues, I guess Sia has all of them), chronic fatigue, Apraxia (really impressed she can sing so well with that one), IEED, Arthritis, Incontinence, Raynaud's Syndrome, Livedo Reticularis, club feet, Interstitial cystitis, PCOS, Endometriosis, GERD, ganglionic cysts, celiac, scoliosis, receding gums, crohns, the list goes on.
      Claiming she has autism because she has a disorder that commonly comorbids with autism is silly. Its hard to find numbers on what % of people with EDS have autism, but we're damn sure that its not 100%.
      Critising a disabled person isnt ableist. Saying you cant ever critise a disabled person is abelist. It implies that Sia isnt a fully actuallised human with autonomy if you say that because she has EDS she cant be held responsible for her actions.
