    letting in 10 million new people over 20 years hasn't exactly helped housing

      Someone has to do the hard work mate and pay for the benefits. Not invading and bombarding other countries is not helping either.

    Stopping someone to buy, how will that help they still need a place to stay. Just build more homes

    And who are the people going to get these homes first?? Same people do in London..

    Ed makes a good point here. Labour has created a totally unnecessary financial straight-jacket by ruling out taxes on the rich. We should be introducing a wealth tax and we should raise corporation tax (at least on larger corporations anyway); and this would allow the government to do enough to seriously improve people's lives. Starmer/Reeves need to rethink this urgently.

      No RR just needs to turn on the Magic Money Taps, farmers give up quality agricultural land to accommodate this need, move away from mickey mouse degrees and train our younger generation to undertake the trades necessary (but still let greedy employers pay them minimum gage) and tell supplies of building materials to drop their prices and operate at a loss. 🤣🤣🤣 Always good to have a plan.

    There is no council housing left in Manchester,it was sold off to housing associations more than 15 years ago. The Labour council did this under a Labour government. Housing association tenants do not have the right to buy, so that is not be an issue.
    I live in Manchester, just about every spare bit of land has luxury apartments built on it unaffordable to the average family. Not sure where Burnham plans to build these new council houses.

      Sold off by the tenants who then made money from the pockets of people who work hard, who in turn will be robbed by Starmer tomorrow!

    Hope the same happens here in London with affordable housing here, not just Manchester England, too!

    A lot of people benefit from high house prices and high rents. They aren't going to just sit back and let the housing crisis be solved. They will fight tooth and nail to stop new houses being built and unfortunately they seem to have more political power than non-homeowners.

  • @RealDareel
    @RealDareel 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Yes council housing is definitely what we need. The problem won’t be fixed by simply building even if it’s ‘affordable’ because if prices start go crazy again. And they will, Housing will continue to be used as an asset rather than a resource.

      They will build a few then sell them off at a discount for profit.

    • @Solihul886
      @Solihul886 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Housing won't go crazy if supply and demand is balanced, the price increases are audience driven. If you have more of the same stock the bidding wars ease

    • @molsy1768

      @@Solihul886right, so where are we getting the public finance to build all these homes to flood the market, and what is to stop private equity firms from buying up all the supply in the first place to maintain control of the market?

    • @Solihul886
      @Solihul886 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@molsy1768 we aren't getting the money, reducing red tape and allowing easier planning would cost little to amend and actually allow private investors to create far more homes.
      What's to stop private firms buying everything? Because they need to sell a product. Whether its rentals or houses to live in, the supply and demand affordability helps hand in hand anyway. And you are forgetting the core point of investing, the returns have to add up. If there's a more balanced supply and demand, the returns won't be as high because the demand isn't overflowing, therefore there wont be mass purchasing as other investments will be more lucrative. This is a good thing for consumers.
      Also remember this is national tax revenue to help public funding elsewhere.
      Politicians saying they aim to make more Council houses with zero explanation or plan as to how they can afford to do that is the fugasi

    • @RealDareel
      @RealDareel 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Solihul886 the reason I think house prices will start to go up again is because interest rates wil come down. the super-rich have got richer but have been happy just collecting interest on that, as rates come down they will be looking to buy assets again.

    Labour needs to raise taxes for the giant corporations and tax small businesses less. They should also lower VAT. They shouldn’t stop people from buying their council house, they should build more council housing and sort out the ones that are in a bad state.

      @@richardwriggt3321 I agree. Worth bearing in mind however that the conservatives have been in power for a very long time now. They made promises after promises to reduce net migration and control the borders. Not only have they failed, the numbers have actually increased exponentially.
      Labour has traditionally always been more "accommodating" of migrants. Which is partly why many voted for Boris Johnson and his Brexit stance and not socialite Corbyn

    Council houses should not be sold especially at a discount. The renters of private houses dont have right to buy even after paying two or three times as much as council houses. Renting a council house over having a mortgage over your head is the choice made and shouldn't be able to buy that houses. By all means save up the difference in council rent and private rent and build it up for deposit buying a house on private house market or simply stay as council tenant with all the advantages that come with that. NO THATCHER RIGHT TO BUY.

    Same old thing, rainbow advertisement and no answers as to how they can afford to do it.
    Still not getting down to the real issue, we statistically need to build x3 more than we are currently. And the best way to do that is to ease planning permissions
    Every member of government knows this but will not because people who are scared, less educated and have less are easier to manipulate
