Restoring old German bench grinder - Tool Restoration (+customization)

- I needed a bench grinder for the shop and restorations so I decided to buy old quality tool and restore it rather than buy a new Chinese grinder. I found this old Metabo that I liked. It works but there is still some restoring to do as there is some rust and cord is bad etc. It also has a badge the Finnish importer has added on it. Since that is not an original badge I decided to replace it with custom badge of my own since the grinder will be used in future videos. There was no major issues with the disassembly. After the disassembly I sandblasted the parts to get rid of all the rust and paint. It is often nice to do sandblasting whenever I have to remove both rust and paint because that takes one step less than removing both separately. there is not really other good way to remove both, although electrolysis works on both to some extent.
After sandblasting I masked the parts and painted them with sprayable hammer paint that didn't need basecoat. It doesn't have much of the hammer pattern but I really like how it turned out.
At first, being very cheap, I tired to just cut the bad part of the cord but it looked bad on the inside as well so I decided it will be safer to replace the whole cord and leave add the vintage plug back to it.
The bottom of the grinder had a picture of the schematics which I took a picture of. Then I took that picture to Photoshop and traced everything to make new picture. I also managed to find a font that matched very close to the original hand written text. This was printed on sticker paper and added back where the old picture was.
I cleaned the old badges of the front of the grinder but I replaced the bottom badge with a custom one. I will probably make a video on making these type of badges to the Odd Experiments channel. But basically I masked bras plate with paint and used electrolysis to etch the unmasked area very deep. Then the masking was reversed and I painted the bottom of this etched area. To attach the bade I had to drill larger holes because I wanted to use same rivets on all badges. the bottom plate was added afterwards so it had slightly smaller holes.

One thing I like alot is that it's surprisingly quiet. I don't feel like I'm sacrificing any rpms or power for the quietness either. All in all it's a very nice machine. No vibration whatsoever.
I'm not a mechanic, i don't know anything about mechanic. But whenever i watch this kind of videos, i feel satisfying (idk why?)
Same here man, idk anything about what he is doing. But its so damn mesmerizing and satisfying, i love it. When im feeling anxious or something i watch his videos, it calms me down and mellows me out.

Beautiful restoration! I was glad you restored an old one instead of buying new. The older German power tools are usually so much better quality than you can get now. The color you repainted it in looked like a metallic modernized version of that green Russian equipment paint. Looks great! Fantastic job. It is always a pleasure to watch you work.

The trick is, at least for me and a handful of others, is to take pictures of what you do along the way. Thankfully for him he has a camera constantly taking those.
If your power switch seems to be tight and harder to turn than before the restoration, it may be due to the rubber washer under the black knob being installed upside down. There’s a nub that should be inserted facing into the hole where the switch shaft extends through the housing, you have it facing outwards. This makes the washer taller and may require extra effort to turn the switch on and off. Refer to the before image at 5:41 and the after reassembly image at 15:38. Easy fix, just remove the knob and flip the washer over. I did enjoy your video, that is a nice grinder you have there.

There is nothing more satisfying than buying an old bit of kit and fully refurbished it. Something that is broken or in a nasty condition and bringing it back to its glorious self. Great job

Very nice grinder. It could use one more item, an eye shield. Got to save them eyes so you can make more video’s.
I have bought exact the same model as your's and also planning to restore it. It work's fine after these years, I think it has original stones on it. Only needs to be sandblasted and painted. Very good peace of machinery from the days, when real tools were made, not the junk from chinezium. Thank you for you video, I use it as some kind of tutorial for dissasembly. Good job, sir !
16:49 you should really make sure to have metal to metal contact for earth wires. The screw is probably enough but it never hurts to be sure.
Also you installed the steady rest bracket upside at the end they should be roughly horizontal from the spindle axis.

I'm an electrician, not sure what you mean about the earth. Can you please explain in detail? Most frame earthed appliances which I have serviced are terminated similarly or use a double-nutted stud arrangement.
jimmytea1 He repainted the motor housing and base and I was suggesting that the best / safest method for the earth was to ensure contact with the metal base - by removing any paint / oxide at the point of attachment and having direct metal-to-metal contact.
That is one savage way of opening a parcel....................there may have been a puppy in there. FPMSL
I have history of doing that and I think even opening boxes can be made creatively and in more fun way. I do that even if I don't film it for youtube

What a coincidence, we still have the exact same one in the warehouse at my wife's village. It belonged to her grandfather who was a handyman. It is still functional and I sometimes use it to sharpen the gardening tools. Yours looks and sounds much better!
One of the first things I learned in metal shop was to match a screw head slot with a proper size driver blade .. never a smaller/thinner blade. Makes for better screw head gripping and easier removal and tightening back in place.
This is going to touch people who know what it is to be loved and appreciate it on a whole other level.

What do you mean by "over-built"? This bench grinder was made to last. We had those in our machine shops back in the day. Those things are quite sturdy.

A nice bench grinder with a smooth run.
See, this grinder was made when machines were built really well, the machine didn’t even walk away when you turned on the power. It just stood in its place. I’ve also always loved METABO’S large logo.

I would say this one was made in the 1960s, according to the colours of the wires in the cord before 1965 when the colour code was changed.
Black is line, gray is neutral and the red is the ground. But since the plug isn't polarised they sleeved the gray and the black one.

Very good job! I was given a similar one, one size smaller than yours. I sanded & repainted the outsides and also transfered one side to a polishing buffer because the disk cover on that side was already lost. (And I think I also changed the cable...). Those old machines from big brands are very durable and can do a very good job in my opinion!
