I found my old Lensatic Compass a bit ago, remembering all the kilometres I trekked over 11 years in the Army. Back before "GPS" in fact I helped to test some of the early gps receivers, anyway I was having some painting done in my house and the contractor had his young son with him. The kid was amazed by my military photos, so I gave him my compass and told him I was able to find my way around the world with it. His eye got wide and ran outside and had a blast. Now his world has opened up. fun memories.
I used one of these a lot when I was in the USMC and was a forward observer for aircraft, artillery and naval gun batteries. It saved me from getting lost I dont know how many times!
I really like how your workshop slowly gets that surgery room vibe. First the gloves and stainless steel tweezers and now the kidney bowl for screws! I wonder what comes next!
As someone with severe Misophonia and a tendency to jump at sudden sharp sounds (even when I know they're coming) I have no idea why these videos are so therapeutic and mesmerising to watch but they are! As always full of subtle humour and end result is fantastic
I used that compass model back in my military days. It was just an amazing and durable piece of hardware. It really helped me out of some jams. Thank you for this video. Excellent work as always.
@@nabsterific I don't think the gloves are supposed to protect you from screwdrivers or hits but rather from all the oils and alcohol based liquids he is using, they can often dry up your hands in the long term and generally do harm for your skin
Absolutely awesome restoration on this U.S. Army lensatic compass !!!!!!!!! I still have my Fathers Old U.S. Army lensatic compass, when he was in the Army an went to Panama in the 80's. Two thumbs way up, Sir !!!!!!!!!!!
I was given one of these when I was 14 years old as new in the belt case. I used it all over the world to sighte in microwave antennas. It still is in fine shape and as new after 60 years!
Very Good Job!!! I used one of these when I was in the US Army. The one I used was a little darker green and all the letters and lines and numbers were filled-in with like a cream or a tan color.
Not gonna lie, when the caption mentioned that it was military-grade camouflage paint, I was expecting to see one coat of paint sprayed on the compass, cut to another coat sprayed on the compass, cut to the compass isn't there, just the wire, but he's spraying it anyways as if the compass had been completely camouflaged into its surroundings.
Oh hey, I still have my army compass. I still have most of my army gear actually because it was 'Damaged or rendered inoperable during wartime deployment' so C.I.S couldn't charge me for it. Kind of my squad leader to sign off on that paper work :P
My dad kept almost everything he had in the army..... all of it is in brand new/used condition but all functional... half of it is outdated gear and it would make sense if he kept that but he also has more modern stuff which when he left was not outdated or damaged to the point where it couldn't be used so i don't know why he got to keep it
Excellent instructional video. I had no idea this could be done by the average person. I've got a couple of beat up compasses that served me well for over 20 years in the Army. Might have to give this a try. You should offer this as a service.
Absolutely amazing. You truly do amazing work and thank you for restoring pieces of technology (that was new at the time), tools, and equipment so if people want know how to do it properly.
Thank you for posting this. You did a nice job on the restore and reminded me that the Land Navigation Course was one of my favorite places when i was in the Army.
That pen you used at 11:42 makes me feel so nostalgic. I had that same SM-Liiga pen as a kid and if I remember correctly the pen had an eraser shaped like a hockey blade at the top so the whole pen looked like an ice hockey stick.
Great video. I have a couple of these from when I was in the Army. Now I can get them working again. I like that you included the 550 cord. That’s exhorted they are issued.
I am in the process of rebuilding an ancient Soviet "Vostok" case compass which was basically a Vostok standard case, the registers printed on a sticker in the case back and the watch innards substituted with a very simple compass that you wore on your wrist like a standard Vostok watch. Some Vostok watches whether by design or accident ended up with the compass printed casebacks seen as a useful emergency tool to aid navigation with your watch but not very practicable as it meant opening caseback to the elements.
Turns out the compass you were working on is a really good compass. These also came in other colors other than burnt mustard. They also came in black and very dark green, depending on the military class/ranking.
Great work. I would only recommend to assemble the actual compass insert as a last step, after all the hammering is done. Thus you won't damage the needle bearing.
Outstanding ! This compass has to be more than 60 years old . The one l was issued , and still carry was made in 1965 and is plastic . Unfortunately that model could never be restored . The pins and screws are brass , but the screws (2) only are there for the wire . Once you understand how to use one , along with a proper map , it becomes a permanent part of your hunting/ camping/ exploring equipment .
the more I'm watching these videos, the more I understand that I'd be more satisfied not only by watching it, but DOING it MYSELF, but I'm a girl and I know nothing about it so I definitely confused what should I do with this thoughts
As a guy IN the Army who has USED one of those, I can proudly say that you restored it to better than actual Army standard. Kudos to you.
TK McMillan what a lovely comment, YAY! The world needs more TK. ❤️🇨🇦❤️
I was Navy and I can confirm that if it's falling apart and barely usable, it's in perfect "Military Grade" standards.
Definitely up to standard. Kudos
As a guy in the army I hate the phrase thank you for tryout service
Fuck auto correct

But can you also fix Jack Sparrow's compass? It's a bit broken.
And where's the rum gone?
His compass is strong, and fierce, and huge-ish.

I like the navy green of the compass. Looks like it’s been lying around in grandpas basement for 40 years now😬😂

Man, these types of videos always remind me of that scene in Toy Story 2 where the old man fixes up Woody. Always satisfying to see the end result.
Seeing how it glows in the dark I found oddly more satisfying than the restoration itself.
I spent 9 years in the US Army, from 95-04. This is the compass I learned to use in basic training, and I still own one. Great video!
