  • Hardly noticed by the public, the largest aircraft parking lot in Europe has been built in a semi-desert in Spain. Close to the city of Teruel in the east of the country, aircraft from a wide variety of airlines have been mothballed. Their future - uncertain. Since the coronavirus crisis, these include the largest and most expensive aircraft in the world. For example, the Airbus A380 and the jumbo jet, the Boeing 747: two symbols of a decades-long "air war" between Airbus and Boeing. Four-jet airplanes are considered fuel guzzlers and CO2 sinners.
    Even the modern A380, which is approved for up to 853 passengers, was withdrawn from service by many airlines after just a few years of operation. Never before in the history of aviation has such an expensive series aircraft been taken out of service after such a short time. But its end is far from certain. This is demonstrated by the history of the Emirates airline, which is relying more than ever on the A380 model and has taken delivery of around half of all aircraft built. Without the A380, the airline's success would have been just as impossible as the rapid development of Dubai into one of the most important intercontinental transportation hubs.
    The documentary "The Battle for the Giant Planes" uses exclusive footage and entertaining eyewitnesses to tell the adventurous stories of the battle for size in aviation. Both Airbus and Boeing threatened to fall into the abyss with the development of a giant aircraft. But for both of them, the gamble paid off in the end.

    To answer the question - in terms of quantity and usage duration the 747 is clearly the winner, when it comes to silence and comfort the A380 is leapes ahead. As much as I enjoy Airbus's success as a European, as much I hope Boeing gets their $hit together and returns to its initial great quality and success as well to keep the market balanced.

    This was so fun to watch. I was supposed to watch for 10 mins before continuing what I intended to do, ended up watching the whole documentary and now my pending task is still pending xd

    Former Boeing Everett where 747's were produced... I was there during the Jumbo Wars... Boeing already knew in advance the Hub and Spoke Market was ending... soon... it was already making 777's to fill the new market demands... they proposed a 'super stretch' 747 but it was never built... no more 747's or 380's... current 777's can seat almost as many passengers as 747 for a fraction of the operating costs...

      Technically the proposed "stretch" 747-500X and 747-600X variants essentially became the 747-8.

    the age of wide body quad jets ain't over if you could manage to get smart propulsion that's both economical & environment friendly . . . hybrid propulsion is one, very similar to ur everyday Prius . . .

    Great documentary I love ❤❤❤❤❤ the A380, I'm still unhappy in a way Airbus did not somehow keep the program alive, even not trying to do something with the engine manufacturers to modernise it and make it more green, however I am happy that EK is keeping the type for longer which means I can plan new trips and memories on board the type and I'm planning to enjoy my time before we say goodbye to the type from our skies and it's a good thing too as Emirates is also my preferred and favourite airline to date.

    The decision to increase the distance that 2-engine aircraft are allowed to fly was basically the decision that ended the hub and spoke model. And Boeing anticipated on that in time.
    Which makes you wonder: who made that decision? Something to think about in the light of current understanding of the intertwined relation between Boeing and the FAA.

    I’ve had coffee, drinks and dinner at the top of the Burj Khalifa and it doesn’t cost $100 for the coffee. A nice cocktail would cost $60.

    Remember, Boeing is a company no backing from US Government. Airbus is a conglomerate of First world countries in Europe.

    If you compare a 747 to a 380 at least compare it to a 747 8i. I would not compare a 747 8i to a DE Havilland.

    Hands down this is the best Aircraft(A380). Every long haul trip I had I would make sure that I am flying A380 even if it meant paying more on some of the fewer flights!
    It’s sad they seem to have gone in such a short time!

    The European bias and errors in this are numerous and unforgivable. This is nothing more a 380 advert and is presented as romantic wonderful dream with lush lengthy bios of Airbus execs, vs the "Oh by the way" 747, not mentioning that the A380 has so much wasted space inside that they could've fit another 100+ passengers in it making it an economic success instead of the instant failure it was except for multi millionaire and Saudi Oil princes/travelers who could afford the high ticket prices. Then there's the sloffing off of American terminology and culture. That's not a Pontiac; it's a Chevrolet Camaro at 18:44. The jet is correctly called a 7-forty-7 at 19:21, not a 7-4-7 as the narrator repeatedly mangles it.

      There is nothing wrong with saying 7-4-7 at all. Many aviation professionals, such as myself, as well as many Boeing engineers, the original flight test crew, techs, and countless others have and continue to refer to it as The 7-4-7. In addition, that is NOT a Camaro sir.

      ​@@dmcr9525 I grew up as an Air Force brat and lived my teen years at the end of the runway pattern of Greater Pittsburgh International Airport. Every TV ad, every professional, every pilot referred to them as 7-forty-7s. It was my adopted airplane, and is insulting to hear it called anything else. It's like listening to your best friend's name constantly being mispronounced... period. Watch any historical video on the design and building of a 747 and you'll see I'm right. It's equal to growing up and every science/astronomy class referred to the planet as "Your - ay - nus" and now they want to call it "Your - in- us" like it's made out of urine or something.

Just pointing out that some, even those who worked, and flew the test flights for the very first one commonly refer to it as the 4-7 and 7-4-7.

      @@dmcr9525 Watch a transition video called "What Happened To The Boeing 747?" Any American speaking who isn't the 👉European👈 narrator calls the American built jet the 7-forty-7. Anyone who flew on the jet appearing on camera called it a 7-40-7. The reason for the change in name was the over population of videos from Europe where it was called the 7-4-7 or simply the "Jumbo". This is why the new jet is not called the 7-7-7 but simply the triple7
