Just a bit of trivia about the song.
“This is a tribute to Dana Wells, the stepson of Max Cavalera (formerly of Sepultura), who was killed by a hit and run driver. Dana was a friend of Deftones lead singer Chino Moreno. Parts of Dana's diary was used in the lyrics: "Walk into this world with your head up high!"
Max Cavalera helped write this, and named his band "Soulfly" after a line in this song.”
After Soulfly was formed Chino would then go on to do guest vocals on 2 tracks dedicated to Dana. ‘First Commandment’ on Soulflys self titled debut and ‘Pain’ also featuring Will Haven vocalist Grady Avenell on their follow up album Back to the Primitive.

I saw Team Sleep live once, excellent stuff. There was one dude right down the front loving every minute, singing along like his life depended on it. He didn't know a single damn word. Was awesome
God this song brought back so many memories. This was my bands opening song when we would play gigs back in South Central in 2002.
One of my favorites off of their 2nd album. Soulfly named their band after hearing this deftones song! Right when Max Cavalera left Sepultura and formed Soulfly.
Great song. This was written for Max's stepson Dana who befriended the band and was murdered and nobodys ever been charged. So they're pissed .And this is where soul fly comes from. Team sleep and crosses are a definitely ones to checkout along with Palms. More From Deftones please.
A lot of Deftones songs have that chill element but there are times they just go all in. The lyrics are mostly correct, the part before 'Soulfly' was missing though! More Deftones 🤘
Chino has 4 bands..team Sleep, Crosses, Palms and Deftones. I LOVE them all! As far as Team Sleep goes Blvd.Nights is a must.
Palms is my favorite of his side project. The Isis dudes are so good.
Deftones from the adrenaline and around the fur years were a totally different animal from the current deftones we all know....these guys brought the energy, and alot of it came from their late bassist Chi Cheng (RIP) he was a beast!!!!
Hey guys, I too initially fell in love with Deftones for the "chill" sound, via Change. After I started exploring the catalog I also fell in love with the harder stuff. CHINO is an Epic Screamer. Speaking of the catalog please check out Entombed from their 2012 release Koi No Yokan. It's a Beautiful Song. You guys always get it done and I totally Dig the new countdown of Disturbing Story Songs. Pretty sure Nice Shot by Filter will be on there. I'm curious where that will land on the countdown. Love that you guys are doing more Deftones and love that you're speaking on Crosses. Their new stuff is awesome too. I heard a few months ago The Weeknd was heavily influenced by the Deftones on his latest album so that's pretty cool.
Just to clarify it was the ‘Trilogy’ album he was influenced by. Tinges of Chino all over it. Check out House of Balloons/Glasstable Girls 🤘🏼

I've hung out with the guys from Deftones many times they are from Sacramento and I grew up close to there. Thanks to being friends with Will Haven and Oddman I met a lot of awesome people. All nice guys.

Deftones and Soulfly traded songs during this time when these albums were released.Chino is in the song called first commandment on the first soulfly album and it pumps as well.

When you listen back to this track once you learn about Max's step sons death it hits a whole lot different. The anguish, pain and darkness felt at the start giving way to the light and positive message towards the end is a real rollercoaster of emotions

People swear this song is just anarchy and chaotic when it’s about them honoring a passed away friend and giving motivational lyrics for the boys who are down. Rock is for the people!
My favorite band of all time!! Love Deftones! Some people call this genre shoegaze but I dont like that, they are Deftones- true to their own sound. Chino is rapping and Max is screaming. Chino actually busted his face up doing this song in the studio.
But you guys need to check out the new Crosses album especially Vivien and Holier. ❤️🤘

Around the Fur is still one of my overall favorite Deftones album. I love the brutality of Chino’s screams mixed with his signature chill singing along side it. The chugging guitar riffs littered throughout are incredible & drumming is on point! This song is a fantastic closer to the album (until you get to the hidden track MX)

Oh man, I only just now saw you guys were recently heading into the Infected Mushroom part of music and wanna just say that with how you guys fell in love with Pink Floyd; you gotta check out Infected Mushroom: Pink Froid. It is on their album Converting Vegetarians II which came out in 2015. Absolutely amazing how they replicate the very thing we all know and love
Glad you liked the song haha, respect for the response. It’s a different take from Deftones, but was refreshing at the time when they went from “raw” to “emo” I love all of Deftones and the progression of their tones.

The leaked demo from Team Sleep is a legendary thing. There are even more songs from that time that haven't been released yet and can't/won't be found online - lots of lo-fi and glitch hop mixed in and before that only a few bands had really combined those things
Another great collab is "Son Song" by Soulfly ft. Sean Lennon! It's a great tribute song to Graziano Cavalera and John Lennon who both died when Max and Sean were kids
There's a band that never ever ever gets any recognition by reactors and they so so should; Will Haven.
Will Haven are a band from the same town as deftones, are best mates with them, have toured with them a bunch of times. Stef from deftones used to be in a band with Jeff the Will Haven guitarist before either bands existed. Grady, the singer, featured on a Soulfly song with Max and Chino (which is worth a listen, called Pain). I think I'm right in saying that deftones have said in the past that if they'd had the balls, they would sound like Will Haven.
I would recommend the Will Haven songs "I've Seen My Fate", "Carpe Diem" (watch the album cover track, not the 'official video', the sound is a bit whack), and "Fresno". And yeah, the Soulfly song called "Pain". There's an amazing live video of "Fresno" into "Carpe Diem" - do that!

My first concert was Deftones at the New Daisy on Beale Street in Memphis back in 96 or 97? It was INSANE!!! Max capacity just over 1,000 at the New Daisy…it’s not open anymore, but I saw some killer shows there!!

This is the REAL Deftones!!! Finally, their album “adrenaline” is their BEST one by far. He’s the best screamer in the business.
Definitely check out Team Sleep, Crosses, and Palms as they are all awesome side-projects for Chino. BTW, Crosses has a new EP coming out in December 2022 and a few singles are out now. Also, China just got featured on Polyphia's new album - check out Bloodbath... wait you guys haven't reacted to any Polyphia yet?!?!?! Gotta get on that!

Team sleep and crosses are awesome. Anything with chino is gold
Deftones are mostly their own thing, but they have a lot of post-hardcore vibes. Much more aligned with early emo than nu metal. Early emo bands would be Sunny Day Real Estate, Mineral, Jimmy Eat World, etc... For newer post-hardcore you gotta check out Glassjaw and Loathe.

Crosses is amazing! Such good music that very few know about. I have yet to play crosses for anyone that hasn’t enjoyed it.
Blvd Nights is the only place to start with team sleep. Also, it’s a commitment, but consider listening to entire deftones albums front to back as a lot of those transitions you’re looking for are incorporated this way. You’ve heard a lot of the songs already but there’s plenty more “oh s**t” moments

Def tones is there own sound and thing , I don’t put them in a category, everyone likes them and they have toured with rock bands and extreme metal bands most bands can’t do that
Deftones have ALWAYS been their own separate style. Pretty amazing that Madonna signed them to her label herself. They just got thrown into the Nu-Metal bin because the industry didn't know how to label them. Labels belong on cans of SPAM, not on bands. Adrenaline has some dirty raps. Around the Fur does as well, of course this. "Back to School" is another great one from White Pony. They are an epic journey...
Its suposed that the 4 horseman of emo are My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, 30 Seconds to Mars and Panic! at the Disco
Deftones has always had a shoegaze and dream pop side to them at least from Around the Fur onwards - back in the day they said tgey shouldn’t be lumped with nu metal as they would still be around when nu metal died down - and doing their own thing. If you want to see more of Deftones’ shoegaze influences you should react to the basics in the genre: My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive and Ride
This is what their first 2 albums sounded like, but honestly all of their albums are saturated with songs just like this.

I think I define Deftones sound is best defined as Sonic Rock.
Deftones has mellowed out over the years but their older stuff was hard af, it's like watching newer Linkin Park fans react to Hybrid theory and how surprised they are when they see their origins and there's a reason why old school fans will always trump new fans because we grew upon what made them who they are, not what they became.
