- This is a 1971 Ferrari 512M that I shared with the Owner for the 2012 Le Mans Classic. It had rained and was just drying out so the track was slick in spots. Had a bit of traffic but still a great ride! You might hear it popped out of 3rd gear a few times and hard to get into 4th plus notice the yellow flag just before the Porsche curves. All in a long lap at LeMans!
my left ear loved this
I love these long going gears, hand shifted, what a melody and what fun to drive and giving maximum of flow experience.
I saw one of these works Ferrari 512M win the 1970 9 hour race at Kyalami. A beautiful car.
The sound reminds me so much of the classic film “The Rendezvous”. Magnificent car, driving and sound in both. Pure joy.
Classic indeed...
Claude Lelouche dubbed those sounds from…
You guessed it…
a Ferrari 512.
One of the truly great cars of all time. I would have loved to see one more lap!
For the historic races, I wish the A.C.O. would just reopen the entire Mulsanne Straight. But I guess they're too scared someone (non-French) would break the high speed record of 1988 (when a specially prepared Peugeot set it). Oh, well.
@@philipclayberg4928 A great video like this and someone will always complain about the bloody Mulsanne straight.🙄
Best audio I have heard to date! Even the movie industry can't get it this good. It really gets my blood moving in a very good way. I dream of driving a car like this through the orange and avocado groves of Southern California at about 2:30 in the morning. Based on these lovely sounds, I would be doing the farmers a favor and they would know it. Their counterparts would probably not be too happy about it. I've had complaints in the past riding through the canyons at about 2:30 in the morning at speed on a built, big-bore Ducati. Those who know, do not mind a bit.
Throttle blips in this era are music to my ears.
The Ferrari seeing those chicanes “Wait that’s illegal”
Lovely sound and great driving. Light weight and good power will always be a solid recipe for speed.
Nice to see the driver actually push the engine on this classic. Took it easy on the brakes and several corners, which was obviously smart, but he let that engine rev. Awesome stuff!
What a sound!! 🤩🤩
Very nice Bob! I love watching these onboard videos!
i'm a sub to ur channel
No car stereo is required....that is the best tune of all time. 😆👍👌
Wow! that gave me shivers! What a sound!
Good driving in less than perfect conditions and a sticky shift. Well done to keep it on the island.
Daniel, from France. Thank you for this fantastic video with display of speed. I've calculated some accelerations : 60 mph in 3 ,3 seconds, 100 mph in 6,4 seconds, 120 mph in 8,2 seconds, 150 mph in 12,6 seconds and 190 mph in 26,2 seconds. The standing start quarter mile is at 10,15 seconds (136 mph) and the standing start kilometer is at 18,7 seconds (172 mph).
Great lap, smooth. And what a car. Thanks for sharing
Sweetness!!!
I kept waiting for that music from the movie Le Mans to start.
Well that was a very nice dose of awesomeness! Thank you!
This is amazing. Anybody who drives a vintage car like this full chat, including 196 MPH on Mulsanne is a HERO
Exactly that and more
Thanks for the complement but I was actually thinking that I was driving this fast car, not mine, with nothing in front of my feet and realized I had no insurance....honest! But I did not lift.....
@@BobEarlRacing Our hero has just become a legend!!!!!!! Outstanding stuff
Without the chicanes, the 512 could easily do 225mph or more.
@@richardgarriga6766 And yet the fastest it ever went was 359 km/h in 1971.
Bob you still kick ass., you were a sick fast driver, I have seen him crush everyone at RiverSide in a SuperVee race on Can Am weekend plus Long Beach in a Altanic Race, both Series had a ton of talent, plus he won at Macau the only American ever.
I remember him well and I’m not even American.
This is truly wonderful music 👌💛💨💨💨
My left ear loved this!
What a beast, king of the track, that sound, a masterpiece.
This kids is a real racing car unlike todays stuff
Going past the other cars so quick hard to figure out what they were! Sounds great too. Looked (a bit) like a GT40, then an Iso Bizzarrini - then later some Shelby Mustangs - all much older cars. I guess only a 917 would've given it a good run. My dad had a P3 in early 70s, like sitting in a goldfish bowl for me as kid I remember. The P3 caught fire when I was there, and I scrambled to get a fire extinguisher off the wall to save it. Fun days in Sth Ken ;)
Your father had a Ferrari 330 P3? Was he related to Enzo or something? The real thing or a replica? Can imagine only a very wealthy car nut owning the legendary Ferrari that Ford went to great expense and trouble to beat at Le Mans 1966. The 330 P4 is even rarer, only 4 ever made (1 of them a controversial P3 conversion, owned by a US Hollywood movie mogul) and more prestigious after it’s epic run and global WSC battles in 1967, but the P3 is still something quite special too.
@@PulsonarHad forgotten writing comment, but yes it was a real P3. My dad and his then business partner shared a mews property that had been vacated by one of the great train robbers, and had become derelict. The partner was Chris Renwick and I think he bought the P3 in the US. Have been told it was ex Can Am and came w/ a transporter, but I'm not sure, and it's 50 yrs ago. There may be a record in a possible MotorSport ad, although they had a lot of great cars, and sold them on constantly. My dad (John Warth) supplied Robs Lamplough w/ the 250 GTO, sold cars to (JCB) Bamford, De Cadenet, and many in later yrs to Charles Howard... He died mid 80s of malaria smuggling a Fi/Fa Delahaye out of India. Gave me an eye opening childhood into some wild times, and great journeys that I'm thankful to look back on in my old age.
@@richwarth Blimey! sounds like you’ve had one hell of an incredibly exciting childhood, although not sure how even a maxed out Ferrari P3 conversion could’ve done against the Can-Am masters like McLaren M8, Porsche 917/30 derivative etc but your story is quite fascinating!! To be honest I have little idea about Ferraris involvement in Can-Am in the late 60s/ early 70s. I learned that they converted a couple of the outstanding P4s for CanAm racing instead when Enzo withdrew his cars from WSC after new rules made his precious P4s obsolete in the WSC after only 1 glorious year (1967-68) . But you mention your fathers business ties and the links to premises once managed by the infamous train robbers; (Ronnie Biggs, Buster Edwards, etc…, ) and the London criminal underworld shenanigans. Then the racing link to the well known De Cadenet family Got the makings of a best selling novel right there. Thanks for sharing 😂
@@Pulsonar Yes While I know the P3 type wasn't a barchetta, as definitely a closed car. Someone called to mention about de Cad, and as he was around at time and older than me, I asked what he remembered. He suggested about Can Am, altho I'm not sure and personally never saw the transporter... I tried writing of one of the adventures, an overland journey to India, 1970. I'm a terrible writer, sadly. Blessings
A couple of them were Chevron B16s.
Life should be about free revving. Glorious stuff.
Amazing. You mention that the track was still slick in areas (and some gear shift issues), but it seems like there was still a solid amount of pace left on table … while still doing quite a quick lap!
I saw these 512M live at Le Mans in 1971 (and 1972). Sadly, they were beaten by the Porsche 917 Long Tailed, which were aerodynamically faster at max speed. Good old days !.
Sorry Van Lennep & Marko were in a 917K - or kurtz meaning short, the long tails all went out mainly with gearbox problems if I remember correctly.
You are right, Brian, the 917K won in 1970 and 1971. I only meant that the max speed was reached by the 917LT in the Hunaudières straight.
Great job, Bob, and I love that sound!
Amazing sound out of one speaker!! Is there another video that is stereo?
Amazing car.
Amazing noises.
Just shows how far cars have come... In its day this Ferrari was one of, if not the most technologically advanced car ever.
Not just race car, literally the most advanced ever.
Now, 50 years later, it's slower than a GT3 car around Le Mans.
Like 30 seconds slower.
I'm not saying this is a slow car, obviously it's not. There was clearly a speed displayed in the video and it showed almost 200mph. That's a damn fast car.
Aerodynamics. And brakes. But mostly aerodynamics. Aerodynamics is simply a wonderful, magical effect and it's made cars much faster and much safer.
Hooray aero.
Hooray Ferrari.
Hooray Le Mans.
Hooray fast cars.
Actually welling up a bit watching this superb
bloody brilliant thanks Bob
I remember the battle against the Porsche 917 in the old Le Mans without chicanes!!!!
Power, beautiful... beast
Great ride. Congratulations!!
Thank you for this nostalgic trip , what a great video , Love to see a corvette if you have one , thanks for this video happy New Year
I keep my fiberglass boat at the marina
It would be interesting reading from you about what the 512M is like to drive.
When the driver floors it entering Mulsanne 😍
512 heaven 🤠
Thank you once again bob great video!
oh brother pure music
This very car won the 9 hour endurance race in 1970 , drivers; Jacky Icxks and Ignazio Guinty.
Forza FERRARI!!
Que bella Machina!
Nice time! Almost like modern GT cars.
196 mph, 315 km/h !!!!
Prior to those chicanes being installed, speeds up over 220 mph/354 km/h
Love love love this video.
Beautiful .
Wow! Ferrari 512M...at Le Mans...what’s not to like about that? What was it like to drive a Bob? I have heard the chassis was a bit twitchy with a short wheelbase. It looked okay to me, although the gearbox was obviously causing problems. Wonderful sound.
And they drove like this in the dark.
And back in the 1960s with other cars on the track going 60 mph/120 km/h slower than the front-runners. _(updating this comment) as the cars ran along the Mulsanne straight._
@@bloqk16 talk about nerves of steel, if you faltered you'd either crash or not race and simply drive around terrified
@@anthonyxuereb792 In the 1967 race, the Ferrari P4s and Ford GT 40 Mark IVs with top qualifying speeds of 145+ mph - 233 km/h, were sharing the race course with Alpine Renaults with qualifying speeds of 112 mph - 180 km/h.
In that same 1967 race, A.J. Foyt was a rookie driving the Ford GT 40 Mk IV, with around a dozen practice laps on the course prior to the race. In the early part of the race when Foyt took over the driving from co-driver Dan Gurney, Foyt said in a later interview that he followed Denny Hulme, driving another Ford Mk IV, to get familiar with the course for around four laps; then Foyt felt comfortable enough to pass Hulme and led the rest of the race.
Foyt also said in a later interview that in the early morning hours Gurney overslept and couldn't take over the driving duties; so Foyt had to drive two consecutive stints with the car; four hours!
*Truly a remarkable era of racing and drivers!*
I should have noted that the 60 mph - 120 km/h speed difference was along the Mulsanne straight at Le Mans.
@@bloqk16 that's one hellofa straight
Fantastic!
الحمد لله على السمع والأبصار والأفئده
Alhamdulillah for sight, hearing and heart.
As Arnold Schwarzengger, once said, I can feel my self comming, when I cross the road, I think the best way to describe one of these driven at limits, imagine driving one at the limits, like all these types of cars, purely orgasmic, by the looks
I Have One of the miniature Cars of the 512M, One Yellow and One Red
thank you,...
Is this 1980's IMSA GTU Pontiac Fiero Bob Earl?
Yes, a bit older
Brilliant!!
very good video, but it was better when the line did not have the chicanes
Don't have a translator....
@@BobEarlRacing Sorry, I'm French... I said it is like the Porsche 917... It's brutal and only for real and good drivers who know how to drive with a real "big" gearbox, big and powerful engine... I'm only 37 years old, but I know before 2000, Le Mans was only for good drivers and beautiful cars... 👍👍👍😉❗ Sorry if my English isn't good... 🇫🇷
Before the chicanes were added the cars were doing 240 mph on the long Mulsanne straight. Try that one in the dark.
in the rain...
Smooth

million dollar+ car, can't even get decent audio/video, 100 bucks, 5 minutes and a clue is all one needs.
Ferrari 512 S and 512 M Is My all time favourite Ferrari race car (not F1)
Music 😍😍😍😍😍
nice.
Herbert Von Karajan was right...
So the course is about 60 seconds slower today than in 1970/71(3:17)
Chicanes and Porsche GoKart curves...
SAD!
FORZA FERRARI
J.C.
Too bad Tony Adamowicz was not called on to drive HIS 512M, in 2011
Or HIS 312P in 2010
Sam could have rode with him...
Porsche AG damn sure had their 917 drivers there, in THEIR cars...
Those we have still with us...
Wow
A shame that damn speedo graphic is over the wheel and instruments!
wow 196mph 313kmh!! was this speed correct?! :o
196mp / h is equal to 315km / h
Sure is
The car turned in 236 mph on the full 3 mile Mulsanne in 1971.
They put in the chicanes in 1992, after the C-2 Mercedes exceeded 250 mph before The Kink.
The Pay For Drive "drivers" were really not up to it…
The Kink begat the "Ginther Lip" on the 1962 GTO
Ritchie created it with some tin snips.
The very FIRST spoiler seen at Le Mans
The car lost over 200 pound of LIFT.
Was now stable through that Kink….
Where "Lucky" Cas Kasner died in his 198 mph 5 liter V-8 Maserati Tipo 161 Costin coupe…. 1965
Kamm tail but no spoiler….
Same like the original Ford "J" Car that killed Ken Miles.
Mk. IVs used a completely different body shape.
With Ginther Lip…
The world had changed..

375GTB Chicanes were introduced in 1990.
*****
_"The car turned in 236 mph on the full 3 mile Mulsanne in 1971."_
No it didn't. The fastest car in 1971 was a Porsche 917 which was timed at 362 km/h. The fastest Ferrari did 359.
www.mulsannescorner.com/maxspeed.htm
The figures are verifiable through the ACO who run the race and operate the speed trap.
_"They put in the chicanes in 1992, after the C-2 Mercedes exceeded 250 mph before The Kink."_
No, that isn't accurate either. The WM88 did 405 km/h in 1988 and the Mercedes C9 did 400 km/h in 1989 (see above link).
You can do the conversions.
He paused at the mustangs .. lol
Had to, there was a yellow flag..
sincronizzatori deboli
It should be a crash box, I think.
248 mph on the salt…
Bonneville
NART!!
Jeasus Murphy
Hate the chicanes where's the 240mph top speed?
A great video like this and you’re moaning…
The Porsche 917 did 240 mph on the straight, but that’s a different ball game.
The highest speed ever recorded by a 917 on the old Mulsanne was 362 km/h in 1971. That’s documented by the ACO.
I’ll let you do the conversion to freedom units.
196 just before the first chicane
Mebbe 240+ with No BLOODY Chicanes, Huh?
And a 3:12 or so
With the original Mason Blanche!
GET SOME BALLS!
HISTERICS!

Thank You Sir!
I loved these cars, 1970 - 1971 Daytona and Sebring.
And the full seasons in europe….
I'd like to see whoever owns Tony and Sam's NART 512M
Would put Tony in it's seat at Le Mans, with Sam as passenger.
THEY were The Children's Crusade against the almighty 917s
NART 312P 1970, 512S Daytona 1971 and 512M for Le Mans…
Not the 1-2-3 results of the beloved 330P4s at Daytona, 1967.
But valiant efforts, none the less…
