    No ABS, no traction control, no buttons on the steering wheel. 610 HP controlled by the driver's skill and a 5 speed manual gearbox. True racing.

    How can a car look this good?
    Truely work of arts... old race cars must be the most fun, dangerous and entertaining ones to drive.
    no assists, just raw power, sound, smell and adrenaline.
    just listen and watch this slide at 1:32
    and 9:50!!
    Look how they have to battle the cars around the track!!
    i wish i had the chance to drive an old monster like this at some point in my life.
    i bet this would instantly help me grow a full chest of hair !

    • @KitKitChanIsaac
      @KitKitChanIsaac 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      This is what real race cars SHOULD be!
      Manual transmission, no power steering, no assists, just driver and car.
      Ever since Ferrari's introduction of the semi automatic transmission into Formula 1 in 1989, that's when motorsport took a downwards spiral.
      These days, race cars are so easy to drive, that as shown by the rise of sim racing, even a regular idiot can drive one.
      That's not what race cars are supposed to be...
      A real race car should be impossible to drive for an average joe, where the driver must constantly wrestle with it to get the most out of it. Race cars these days have too much downforce, the invention of better tire compounds might have improved road safety, but it has ruined motorsport.
      BRING BACK BIAS PLY RACING TIRES.

    • @claudiomarangone614
      @claudiomarangone614 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      Yes, of course back in those days mid engine race cars did not need power steering because of their lightweight and didn’t produce enough downforce to make it unbearable to steer without power assist.

    This is the only Ferrari that could take on the 917 actually only at some tracks not flat out like LeMans. This was Mario Andretti's favorite Race Car so he said in an interview. Andretti co-won Sebring 12hr 1970 in a 512 . Interestingly Steve McQueen came in 2nd I guess. It's all on TH-cam

    • @Ukygumo
      @Ukygumo 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      What are you talking about? The 917 was so stupidly advanced that at Daytona 1970 it beat the 512, which came in third, by more than 48 laps. The reality was that car never had any competition in the two years it was allowed to participate before the regulations were changed to prevent it from continuing to win

    • @reallyluckyoaklawn8306
      @reallyluckyoaklawn8306 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Which interview? I think he liked the 1972 FIA WEC winning Group 6 3.0 L 312PB best, if I remember correctly, from the extended interview, of him in the book "Porsche Hunters" which described Ferrari prototypes racing from 1968 - 1973. Mario never raced the 1970/1971 512M, only the 1970 512S. Mario raced the 312P, 512S, 312PB and 712 during those years.

    • @reallyluckyoaklawn8306
      @reallyluckyoaklawn8306 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The late 1970/1971 512M was a match for the Porsche 917K, as Penske proved at the 1971 Daytona, Sebring, Le Mans and Watkins Glen races. His privately entered 1971 512M even got up to 2nd at the 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans, ahead of 2 of 3 Porsche 917 Longtails. Also upon its debut, at the 1970 Zeltweg 1000KM, the Jacky Ickx/Ignacio Giunt factory Ferrari 512M was running away from the JWA & Salzburg Porsche 917Ks, until electrical issues robbed them of the W. You can see John Wyer even discuss this in the Gulf "Year to Remember video" also on TH-cam. In the "Porsche Hunters" book, the author writes that Ing. Caliri was bitterly disappointed the factory did not campaign the 512M in 1971.

      @@reallyluckyoaklawn8306 I have read the same in another book. He said the 312 was more like a Formula 1 car...lighter, more maneuverable , that you could toss around.
      The 512 was bigger, heavier, and i think i read that the caster settings may have made the steering fairly heavy.
      I was absolutely in love with the 512 and the Porsche 917, as well as all of the endurance cars. Jacky Ickx and the 512 were my favorites
      I was blessed to have seen them all practice, qualify and race at the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1970 and 1971, as well as Sebring in 1972 when the 312 PB's were driven by Andretti/Ickx/Ronnie Peterson/Brian Redman/Carlos Reuteman/Tim Schenken.
      Andretti and Ickx co-drove the Ferrari 312P against the 917's in 1971 at Sebring. Vic Elford won in a Martini Porsche 917.

    This machine exudes aggressiveness 😍
    The 512M beast was giving headaches to the 917s in 1971... without any official team!
    It's a pity that, having the ultimate weapon against the 917, Ferrari decided not to use it officially, prefering to dedicate themselves to develop the relatively "boring" (but very practical) 312, that was going to be the king in 1972 with the new (boring) rules.
    Ferrari did the rational choice, but... who remember the 71, 72, ... years in Sport-Prototype racing?
    When the Endurance Racing was again fascinating, in the 80s, Porsche was again there , while Ferrari was out of it.
    I subjectively feel that Ferrari gifted the Championship in 1971, one of the greatest ever, while it won by a mile Championships with new rules and without much impact the next years...
    What great seasons those years were!

    Love the video, and the sound of that husky Ferrari engine, and the clutching, gearing up and down. I'm prretty sure the 512 was the car that Mario Andretti raced in the CanAm series back in the 70's. The one race I witnessed, the Ferrari got smoked by the McLarens of Denny Hulme and Bruce McClaren until Bruce wrecked. Those big Chevy V8's in the McClarens were the best sounds I ever heard in a race car.

      Andretti raced the 712M in CanAm, an open cockpit version of the 512. It was just as wonderful sounding! And yes, those McLaren's were unbeatable during that era! I saw them dominate at Riverside, and I'll never forget the sound.

    What an incredible car, and incredible video. The external takes were perfect to show the speed of a dedicated race car, I wish F1 would adopt some of these angles. Especially starting from 1:25, up to that slide at 1:32 as others have remarked. Perfect 🤌.

    The onboard camera gives you a different perspective of how these vehicles are driven compared to a stationary track camera. Just when the car is at its fastest, the driver needs to put the brakes on. Although the cars seem to drive so slow, they are going fast. The race course seems small even though it isn’t. A slower moving car appears to come at you and people wonder why accidents still happen at the race course.

    This is what real race cars SHOULD be!
    Manual transmission, no power steering, no assists, just driver and car.
    Ever since Ferrari's introduction of the semi automatic transmission into Formula 1 in 1989, that's when motorsport took a downwards spiral.
    These days, race cars are so easy to drive, that as shown by the rise of sim racing, even an average idiot can drive one.
    That's not what race cars are supposed to be...

    At minute 12:15 you can see how the needle of the third indicator from the left collapses to zero just after the third/fourth gear change at the beginning of the main straight.
    After two minutes the engine dies....
    If the driver had seen it, could he have saved it ?
    EDIT: there is also a warning light that comes on now and then and it seems to me that it says “OIL” underneath it, just near the left side of the steering wheel...
