Why The Arunachal Frontier Highway Is A Big Deal

  • NEW DELHI: The Centre has finally green-lighted a 2000-km-long highway that aims at providing all-weather connectivity between the western periphery of Arunachal Pradesh and the eastern parts of the state that borders China. It will run along the McMahon Line and when fully complete, will help speed up access of Indian troops and military equipment to the LAC, should there be any Chinese misadventure. The move, with an estimated cost of ₹40,000 crore, was first conceived in 2008 but has been dogged by delays. The project will be a tough one, given the difficult topography, high altitude and inhospitable weather. In this episode of ‘Ask Nitin’, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale explains why this highway and other infra projects in Arunachal Pradesh are worth the efforts despite the hardships and the high financial costs involved.

I visited Tawang in 1998 , we drive hours and find nobody except army vechiles that too sparingly . At that time many patches after zomritaliya to tawang was katcha road . I stayed at Circuit house as no hotels available that time . If remember correctly film koyla of maduri dikshit also filmed there around 1995 . What a wonderfull place.

Thanks Nitin ji for your ground reports on Arunachal Pradesh. It will be easier now to move heavy equipments right upto the conflict/ war zone. Chinese have already built a Railway line all along the indo Tibetan border . Even today we have not grabbed the initiative in relation to China in Tibet. We have to aim for the offensive into Tibetan territory.

Thanks for a good report on the progress of the Arunachal Pradesh infrastructure. The maps and photos were very helpful and a good way of observing the challenges of the terrain. Absolutely essential to enhance connectivity in such a strategic state not only for the military, but also for the civilian population, particularly in border towns. Besides China, the state also borders Myanmar. India needs to actively engage with the military junta in Myanmar, so that China does not gain access to another port in the Indian Ocean Region from Myanmar, that would enable it to find an easier route to the IOR and its shipping lanes without passing through the Straits of Malacca and avoiding the naval presence of littoral states in the region including India. China's aim is to encircle India while continuing to strengthen its presence in the IOR.

If it is sparsely populated in Arunachal Pradesh then local defense personal should be given the land near the border areas after they retire from permanent commission. This way locals will be motivated to join the armed forces and they will act as deterrence to the enemies.

The Government and the Border Road Organization deserves much credit for undertaking this crucial task of infrastructure development in Arunachal Pradesh. The infrastructure could lead to the creation of Towns and Villages where the local population could settle down and develop the area. And Military Cantonments could also be setup. One of the reasons the Chinese have been constantly encroaching on our border territories have been the sparse or no development and lack of population in these areas.

People who lived in Arunachal in the late 80s and early 90s know that it took 7 hrs by truck to reach from rail head Silapathar to Along - a distance of only 68 kms. A trip from town of Along to Tuting took 8 days which included a 5 days march on foot. Ramakrishna Mission schools type NGOs were doing yeoman work in education but govt was scared to build infra closer to borders. Excepting Indiraji and for a short period Atalji, our leadership 1947-2014 was very timid and it shows in their hesitancy to even defend their own borders and people. Dr MMS was a technocrat PM and not maybe the best visionary but he was the FIRST CONGRESS leader to recognise need to develop NEast. He started in earnest but was bogged down by a slothful congress party and could not achieve even 30% of what he desired to do.

You seem to be using Arunachal Frontier Highway and Trans Arunachal Highway synonymously. But these two highways are different. The alignment in the map doesn’t match with the places you’re mentioning. I think you need to fix your real understanding on these two highways first before making a video with half baked information. Arunachal frontier highway is not yet started, and only some of the local roads are being constructed to connect some of the remotest villages for army base.
I’m not surprised how reporters, academicians and researchers use wrong information to portray northeast. It’s been in practice, and I’m being honest your poorly investigated video is not giving any information either on the highway development in Arunachal Pradesh nor adding any insights in the larger geopolitics and state legibility practices of the Indian nation state in the remote borderland areas of Northeast India.
