'Not Sure What China Has Gained Through Aggression'

  • NEW DELHI: "China has lost India strategically. If they wanted India to play a role between them and the US, that is not going to happen. India is now firmly with the US," says Gautam Bambawale, former ambassador to China and one of the longest serving joint secretaries on the MEA's' China Desk. He talks to StratNewsGlobal in our series One Year Since Galwan, giving an overview of the diplomatic context.
India and China are now in a "brave new world", he argues. China by its actions in Ladakh, has torn up the peace and tranquility agreements signed since 1988. He underscored the external affairs minister's fateful words, "India China relations are at the crossroads," and unless there is a resolution of the boundary issue, India is certain that there cannot be any improvement in relations.
China has not been aggressive only against India, he points out. It's been aggressive all over the world including with its littoral neighbours. It's clear that for them the days of lying low are over, they want to show their strength to the world and "i'm not sure for what gain," he says.
More in this conversation with Gautam Bambawale, former ambassador to China, in our series on Galwan.

they don't care that they have lost India strategically. This is because they don't see us as a threat.

Agreed: Judge them by their actions but India did get surprised. In that vein, Galwan could be a decoy. How ready is India to give battle, if China tries to separate Assam and everything beyond from the rest of the country, by making a similar break-neck move from East of Sikkim to South of Siliguri/Jalpaiguri (barely 160 kms.)? Chinese military is already inside Bangladesh at that point. How does India signal that Xi should consider other countries to attack instead of India?

Very insightful conversation.Would love to know from ambassador Bambawale as to why India is not recognising Tibet
or at the very least supporting them.If it is due to the fear of china supporting insurgents them its already happening.

The sacrifice of brave 20 change the thinking of minds of small nations like Indonesia. China is bulling only not determine to fight war. Declared only 4 officers of its army died during Galwan clash. India needs to be very offensive against China. Boycott China is the best tool to world people.

Chinese have this superiority chips on their shoulder. They are trying to be too
Clever by half! They have to given a bruising experience to clear up their minds. There'll be a cost for sure, but it'll create a more realistic paradigm in India🇮 China relationship.

@22:00 on balancing positions. So essentially Gautham is asking for Jaishankar and Ram Madhav to trash the "India Way", which calls for bilateral discussions. The foolishness of the India Way was exposed in the Ladakh invasion last year
Would gladly support getting rid of the India Way. Jaishankar may have to refund the monies on his book by that name

Mr. Ambassador's comments are just very childish. Why did Mr. Ambassador think India has the weight to play ANY role between China and the US? India's GDP is about 1/5 that of China, 1/7 that of the US. Both China and the US are permanent members of the UN security council, while India is not. China is India's number 2 trading partner, accounting for 10% of India's trades. But India is only number 11 in China's trading partners, a mere 2% of China's total trade. I can't see what India can do to force or help China to do anything.

Unless China is made to realise that she will have to pay a very heavy price militarily, she will not relent from her attempts to beat us .Unfortunately this Modi govt. has already lost the battle by allowing China to come to Sri Lanka and surround us from the South too. Whether it is BJP or Congress, both the main political parties from North India have no idea that because of their collective stupidity and lack of strategic vision this has happened. Till the LTTE was there ,India had some clout with the Sri Lankan govt. , there. Falsely making the LTTE the scapegoat in the assassination of Mr Rajiv Gandhi and playing a huge part in its destruction , India has , in fact , invited its own possible destruction at the hands of the combined force of the Chinese ,the Sri Lankans ,and in future the Pakistanis from the soft underbelly of India ,the South. It is no wonder that the global Tamil Community is positively hostile to India for completely alienating it and surrendering its interests to the Sinhalese, who have already betrayed the trust of India.

The colonial power when give independent to India intentionally did not marked the boarder properly (maybe fearing revenges from India ), so when needed they will press the button, now they had press the button, so India & China go to war to destroy India & China economy. India are very aware of the concept of divide & rule.
Look at what happen to India & Pakistan, both are very similar people but religion are different, Pakistan & India spend a lot of money on war & defense and both are poor because the war, divide & rule concept. The political leadership should talk peace & cooperation.

    1) economy is #1 item to ficus on. But, I disagree that India needs to get back to 8%. 15% is doable
    2) I doubt the Quad is a viable solution any more. With NATO and EU focusing in the SCS, India is no longer relevant. India is too slow and does not commit to anything meaningful

    • @physicsonline8853
      @physicsonline8853 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Your statement is factually incorrect.Name me the areas gained, and the year when they gained them. The spots you have mentioned were the no man's land which had been demilitarized by agreements, and these agreements have been unceremoniously scrapped by them at will. Also, gain in reference to what?China never recognized the India-China border, yet Nehru agreed to acquiesce in their forcible occupation of Tibet. His failure to clearly think the issues through in 1950 is the basis for the asymmetrical standoff today.China is salami slicing the remote unoccupied territory on the Himalayan border like a criminal; but it has formidable military, nuclear and economic power as well.India can't deal with them as they can do with Pakistan.
