I'm a type one diabetic of 31 years old, I've been diagnosed for 28 years now and my blood sugars have been well controlled all my life apart from a few years when I was a teen. I recently had a retinal detachment due to the condition. I just had diabetic vitrectomy surgery yesterday. My advice to everyone is to get your eyes checked frequently, no matter what even if your blood sugars are well controlled. The idea of going blind at 31 is terrifying and I'm hoping this surgery will help but please dont wait to the point where I did.
I was diagnosed at 3 months old and am now 28. and am just getting treatment now. good luck with everything and your not alone! agree doctors kept telling me to get checked but never why or what they are doing. kept thinking it was a waste of time so i stopped. need to spread the word more that they are actually looking for stuff to stay ahead of your disease.
@@user-up4zi1do6p I had very little pain, My vision was very blurry for a week or so but got better over the course of a month or two. Nowadays my vision is much improved but I still get regular checkups and an injection in my other eye every 10 weeks to stop any leaky blood vessels growing
I'm sorry that happened. I have a type I friend who had the same happen. He went legally blind and cannot work anymore. I am getting checks every 3-4 months. I did go see a different doctor and he said that keeping the blood sugar very well controlled and in the normal range IS protective. He determined that the damage was very minimal and I did not need treatment yet. He also calmed my fears of the needle treatment should it be necessary some day. MUCH better than the other doctor I had.

Sarah R yes my vision was so bad I was almost totally blind , my right eye was better but I still need cataract surgery for this, my left eye everything was so blurry I couldn’t make out anything, but I got my blood sugar under control it took me 1 and a half years then I got my surgery, I’m happy to say o can see! Colors , brightness and everything else!

My grandma was super sick for almost 2 years...went and saw 4 different doctors before anyone ordered just a simple blood test and figured it out. Same thing...she was diabetic. Diabetes does tend to run in families so please continue to monitor yourself and keep yearly eye exams and annual visits to your family physician. I am always seing my doctor to check my eyes.. but it was not notice last Christmas that i ate a lot in a twinkling of an eye i was diagnose with eye diabetes. CAN i still go on for an operation if it was lowered to 130??

I'm dealing with my diabetic retinopathy since 2 years now, and my ophtalmologist advised me to be careful with radically trying to drop my HBA1C. Due to a shock effect like that, it could backfire and actually worsen the edema.
I am Type II, very controlled sugars in the mid 5 range. I had no diabetic retinopathy as we were checking to be safe.. I have quit sugar, I have quit wheat and gluten. I have quit those nasty inflammatory seed oils. For 5 years I have stuck to natural foods, very low carb. That has to be protective. Last year had chemo, and my sugars went so high. My PC added a secondary medication to help keep them lower but it seems the chemo did a lot of damage. Even months after it was over the sugars stayed higher than before and my A1c increased to 6.2 but now back to 5.6. After another retinopathy eye check after chemo the doctor said I now have diabetic retinopathy, the early stage and he wanted to start needle treatment immediately to keep it under control. I was very upset and had a lot of questions. First off I'm terrified of the needles... I might flinch or jerk out of fear or some kind or knee jerk reaction... that could damage my eye even further. But I had a question of whether the treatment itself would also damage my eye. He wouldn't answer, had a very set look on his face, and turned his back to me and said 'we'll see you in 3 months." I'm thinking of finding another doctor who will answer my questions without making me feel bad. And also who might have a little bit of compassion. Are there even any natural practices that one can do to help? I will do it if I have to, but really I will need a sedative. Just thinking about needles coming towards my eyes makes my blood pressure rise.
That's how it happened for me. My eye doctor was the first to diagnose my type 1 diabetes. My vision was suddenly more blurry.....and sure enough..... Here I am 31 yrs later still trying to do better with my blood sugar control.

As always, an excellent video, thank you. I've been diabetic (type 2) for 17 years and have had my annual diabetic eye screenings every year, which are very thorough and always include a machine that takes photos of the back of my eye. I recently had cataract removal in both eyes. My vision was absolutely perfect afterwards. Then, this past week, four weeks after surgery, I leaned over and felt a flash in my eye followed by what looked like a reddish floater right in the center of my vision in that eye. My doc got me in early the next morning and it looks like I had a microvascular bleed from diabetes and my vision is currently impaired in that eye. I am heartbroken, as my vision was so wonderful a week ago. From what I've read, it is possible that in a few months the vision may improve. The doc said it was not a retinal bleed nor did it appear to be a posterior vitreous detachment, but referred me to a retina specialist this upcoming week. My diabetes is considered to be well controlled, with an a1c of 6.3. Guess it's time to be even more vigilant. Thanks again for a wonderfully educational video. Thank you doctor you described that perfectly and calm , my anxiety was thru the roof not knowing what was happening to my vision changes especially after a few scares and vision exam at a local eye specialist care center revealed nothing to them . I will follow up with my hospital to see a specialist to get a diabetic eye exam
It’s so scary to see how easy it could be to have undiagnosed diabetes affect eye health this definitely has made me think about my diet way more than previously and looks like I shall be making an appointment with an optician asap. Although I have no eye concerns myself personally it has highlighted the importance of being pro active and not waiting till something happens before taking action

Learned a lot. Thanks. I go to see the eye doctor in two weeks for changes in my eyesight due to diabetic retinopathy. They'll take a closer look, take some pictures and compare them to the ones they took two years ago. The pictures they took two years ago were normal. Something tells me that's no longer the case given I have a gray spot- not big- but almost like a indistinct gray cloud that interferes with my vision. The more I concentrate in one area holding my vision still, the more the gray spot interferes with my vision.
AFter finding out I had Diabeetus and having 2 strokes in my Brain Stem...my GP ighly suggested I go see my Eye Dr. I went the examine my eyes....Found not only were they ig good shape...but my vision has gotten better since my last eye exam. I am lucky that the stroke did not take out my eye sight. It did take my short term memory and abilty to say more than a sentnce or 2 and I now cannot do math. But all that is acceotable I have my eyey sight.

Oh my Goodness, I need to quit sugar asap. Wow thankyou very much this is the most relevant information I've heard about diabetes and the eye in my entire life, I had no idea how serious it was. I have been diagnosed over the years with gestational diabetes through pregnancies. Can this type of diabetes affect the eyes? Every diabetic test I've had said I don't have the disease, but I'm border or pre diabetic, I just shook it off as not that important as I didn't have the disease. I do wear glasses though, I'm short sighted. I will be definitely taking up an appointment with an optometrist asap. Thankyou Dr.

Started as Type 2 in my late 20's, which progressed to Type 1. Managing my glucose numbers have been impossible, going up and down like a roller-coaster, i have to go without food just to get my numbers to level off. That led to the proliferative diabetic retinopathy, the blood vessels leaked, the eye gel started giving everything a reddish color, had the new eye gel pumped in, was briefly 20/20 vision (I've always been near sighted) for the first time, now I have to have cataract surgery. All of this in the left eye, the right eye is tougher and only nearsighted and none of the other issues.
Hi doc. I'm a new subscriber as of now. I was just on the phone with my parents, they are both diagnosed with diabetes. My mother in particular says she's starting to loose sight. Objects seems blurry to her. I want to better assist them and potentially prevent her from losing her sight. I'm on the process of finding them insurance to try visiting an eye doc. Could you do a video on macular puckering? I had an operation for this and my eye clouded up one month later. The surgeon would not do anything about it so I went elsewhere. I am now scheduled for cataract surgery.
Yes! Macular pucker or otherwise known as an epiretinal membrane...great topic. I wish you the best in your upcoming surgery. Are you getting a standard mono-focal lens? Toric? Accommodating?
As far as I know it will be mono-focal. Anything else will cause multi-color reflection or that is what I was told. I will get my astigmatism taken care of at the same time. Thank your for your reply and videos. The videos make things a lot clearer (chuckle).

Very nice explanation, thank you. I was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy disease last week. My left eye is mild stage but right eye is moderate stage. Doctor please tell me whether eating 1 banana everyday is bad for retinopathy disease. To control my diabetes I dont eat any grains , however every morning I make a banana shake made with banana, plain yogurt and water. Is fruit bad for retinopathy disease ?

Dr. I have spots that I see like a tear drop. They look purple and white and sometimes black. I did see the Optometrist and on Friday morning I see an Ophthalmologist. What do you think is happening? I watch you all the time and you have helped me understand so much! I am 70. When I write some of the letters above the sentence I am writing have disappeared! Anyone else have this problem?
U got me tearing up now, a grown man like me - Your teachings are out of this world. Could kindly advise me on what to do. I was recently in April 2024 diagnosed with retinopathy with stage one even though I consistently control my blood sugar to the core after being diagnosed with T2D in August 2022. My problem now is what do I need to fast, to reverse it from progressing. ya, also heard covid can cause some serious effects on eyes for which you have to remove them before it reaches your brain and you die. I rather die than removing my eyes lol
Went to 2 differ eye doc and specialist... they say they didnt see much wrong except a little dryness....i never thought about blood sugar or diabetes... i used to eat tons of sugars... this have made me wanna be very serious about my diet and ill slow down on carbs and cut out sugar 85-90% .... im 32... and having glares issues. ....im working out and eating healthy...being overweight isnt fun... im 6"4 270lbs...
I went to see an eye surgeon to check an ERM in the left eye. He told me it was stable at this time but also said there was a small trace of some bleeding in the left of the eye. A tiny trace but he just advised to come back next year for another check-up or come before if any symptoms appear. And also, watch the sugar levels as I'm a diabetic. It kind of left me wondering about the bleed. PS: It's just annoying you sometimes get even more worried after seeing a doctor than before. Now, I'm wondering will there be more bleeding and how can I feel all right waiting until another check-up?

I lost the vision in my left eye due to this. In the early days of my diabetes (I was young) no one told there was a difference between an Optometrist an ophthalmologist (remember I was young) so I was seeing the optometrist thinking I was getting the eye care I needed.
What was wrong with seeing your optometrist? Both are trained to identify and manage diabetic retinopathy. Only once surgical treatment is warranted do you technically need to see an ophthalmologist.
Doctor Eye Health maybe because it was in the the early 1970s and the optometrist was elderly he lacked the training and skills of today’s optometrist. By the time my diabetic retinopathy was discovered my eye was so filled with blood the ophthalmologist couldn’t see into my eye.
Hey doc...I have a question I have been diabetic since the age of 6 and am 15 now. Since the past two years my sugars have been out of control( I'm talking an hba1c of 10+) Can I avoid this condition if I control my sugars from now on or is it already too late? P.s- I have checked with my opthalmologist and I do not have diabetic retinopathy currently
Thank you so much for the great question! It is never too late to get your sugars under control. I know it is easier said than done. The better controlled your blood glucose the less chance of having problems in the future. You may always have a chance of developing it but you can lower your risk by having better control.
Please keep in mind grains of any kind immediately turn to sugar ... besides actual sugar. A healthy keto diet is fantastic. Check out Dr. Eric Berg vids. blessings.

This is the second day i have a dark shadow in my right bottom left corner eye, but if I closed my eyes I see this shadow like the color of the moon at the left bottom corner as well. I don’t have diabetes........but i might think that this could be about sugars... last month I have noticed bubbles on my peed... so I stop taking sugars to the minimum...... I don’t have any other symptoms, and I am at the sun almost everyday. How do I stop this from developing to a further negative?

Can you dissolve cataracts without surgery? My opthalmologist said I have cataracts but he also said it is not urgent to do a surgery yet my vision is getting blurrier everyday. Surgery wait time is 3 months. What should I do in the meantime?
This has me thinking that I should be making an appointment to see my Opthalmologist. I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes at the beginning of the year, my A1C was 10.9 down to 5.6 within 3 months and I lost 38 lbs. Was the procedure painful and can you still see out of your eye? Is it better or worse? Was this a Lazer procedure?

Thank you for this clear and informative video. The visual materials you showed were so insightful! I'm dealing with my diabetic retinopathy since 2 years now, and my ophtalmologist advised me to be careful with radically trying to drop my HBA1C. Due to a shock effect like that, it could backfire and actually worsen the edema.
I am Type II, very controlled sugars in the mid 5 range. I had no diabetic retinopathy as we were checking to be safe.. I have quit sugar, I have quit wheat and gluten. I have quit those nasty inflammatory seed oils. For 5 years I have stuck to natural foods, very low carb. That has to be protective. Last year had chemo, and my sugars went so high. My PC added a secondary medication to help keep them lower but it seems the chemo did a lot of damage. Even months after it was over the sugars stayed higher than before and my A1c increased to 6.2 but now back to 5.6. After another retinopathy eye check after chemo the doctor said I now have diabetic retinopathy, the early stage and he wanted to start needle treatment immediately to keep it under control. I was very upset and had a lot of questions. First off I'm terrified of the needles... I might flinch or jerk out of fear or some kind or knee jerk reaction... that could damage my eye even further. But I had a question of whether the treatment itself would also damage my eye. He wouldn't answer, had a very set look on his face, and turned his back to me and said 'we'll see you in 3 months." I'm thinking of finding another doctor who will answer my questions without making me feel bad. And also who might have a little bit of compassion. Are there even any natural practices that one can do to help? I will do it if I have to, but really I will need a sedative. Just thinking about needles coming towards my eyes makes my blood pressure rise.
That's how it happened for me. My eye doctor was the first to diagnose my type 1 diabetes. My vision was suddenly more blurry.....and sure enough..... Here I am 31 yrs later still trying to do better with my blood sugar control.

I've been diabetic (type 2) for 17 years and have had my annual diabetic eye screenings every year, which are very thorough and always include a machine that takes photos of the back of my eye. I recently had cataract removal in both eyes. My vision was absolutely perfect afterwards. Then, this past week, four weeks after surgery, I leaned over and felt a flash in my eye followed by what looked like a reddish floater right in the center of my vision in that eye. My doc got me in early the next morning and it looks like I had a microvascular bleed from diabetes and my vision is currently impaired in that eye. I am heartbroken, as my vision was so wonderful a week ago. From what I've read, it is possible that in a few months the vision may improve. The doc said it was not a retinal bleed nor did it appear to be a posterior vitreous detachment, but referred me to a retina specialist this upcoming week. My diabetes is considered to be well controlled, with an a1c of 6.3. Guess it's time to be even more vigilant. Thanks again for a wonderfully educational video. Thank you doctor you described that perfectly and calm , my anxiety was thru the roof not knowing what was happening to my vision changes especially after a few scares and vision exam at a local eye specialist care center revealed nothing to them . I will follow up with my hospital to see a specialist to get a diabetic eye exam

It’s so scary to see how easy it could be to have undiagnosed diabetes affect eye health this definitely has made me think about my diet way more than previously and looks like I shall be making an appointment with an optician asap. Although I have no eye concerns myself personally it has highlighted the importance of being pro active and not waiting till something happens before taking action

Learned a lot. Thanks. I go to see the eye doctor in two weeks for changes in my eyesight due to diabetic retinopathy. They'll take a closer look, take some pictures and compare them to the ones they took two years ago. The pictures they took two years ago were normal. Something tells me that's no longer the case given I have a gray spot- not big- but almost like a indistinct gray cloud that interferes with my vision. The more I concentrate in one area holding my vision still, the more the gray spot interferes with my vision.

AFter finding out I had Diabeetus and having 2 strokes in my Brain Stem...my GP ighly suggested I go see my Eye Dr. I went the examine my eyes....Found not only were they ig good shape...but my vision has gotten better since my last eye exam. I am lucky that the stroke did not take out my eye sight. It did take my short term memory and abilty to say more than a sentnce or 2 and I now cannot do math. But all that is acceotable I have my eyey sight.

I have been diagnosed over the years with gestational diabetes through pregnancies. Can this type of diabetes affect the eyes? Every diabetic test I've had said I don't have the disease, but I'm border or pre diabetic, I just shook it off as not that important as I didn't have the disease. I do wear glasses though, I'm short sighted. I will be definitely taking up an appointment with an optometrist asap. Thankyou Dr.

Started as Type 2 in my late 20's, which progressed to Type 1. Managing my glucose numbers have been impossible, going up and down like a roller-coaster, i have to go without food just to get my numbers to level off. That led to the proliferative diabetic retinopathy, the blood vessels leaked, the eye gel started giving everything a reddish color, had the new eye gel pumped in, was briefly 20/20 vision (I've always been near sighted) for the first time, now I have to have cataract surgery. All of this in the left eye, the right eye is tougher and only nearsighted and none of the other issues.

Hi doc. I'm a new subscriber as of now. I was just on the phone with my parents, they are both diagnosed with diabetes. My mother in particular says she's starting to loose sight. Objects seems blurry to her. I want to better assist them and potentially prevent her from losing her sight. I'm on the process of finding them insurance to try visiting an eye doc. Could you do a video on macular puckering? I had an operation for this and my eye clouded up one month later. The surgeon would not do anything about it so I went elsewhere. I am now scheduled for cataract surgery.
Yes! Macular pucker or otherwise known as an epiretinal membrane...great topic. I wish you the best in your upcoming surgery.
Are you getting a standard mono-focal lens? Toric? Accommodating?
As far as I know it will be mono-focal. Anything else will cause multi-color reflection or that is what I was told. I will get my astigmatism taken care of at the same time. Thank your for your reply and videos. The videos make things a lot clearer (chuckle).

Very nice explanation, thank you. I was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy disease last week. My left eye is mild stage but right eye is moderate stage. Doctor please tell me whether eating 1 banana everyday is bad for retinopathy disease. To control my diabetes I dont eat any grains , however every morning I make a banana shake made with banana, plain yogurt and water. Is fruit bad for retinopathy disease ?

Dr. I have spots that I see like a tear drop. They look purple and white and sometimes black. I did see the Optometrist and on Friday morning I see an Ophthalmologist. What do you think is happening? I watch you all the time and you have helped me understand so much! I am 70. When I write some of the letters above the sentence I am writing have disappeared! Anyone else have this problem?

U got me tearing up now, a grown man like me - Your teachings are out of this world. Could kindly advise me on what to do. I was recently in April 2024 diagnosed with retinopathy with stage one even though I consistently control my blood sugar to the core after being diagnosed with T2D in August 2022. My problem now is what do I need to fast, to reverse it from progressing. Currently no symptoms, these are my results BELOW. since 2022 have kept my blood sugar under control but for some reason got diagnosed with these. please help.

Went to 2 differ eye doc and specialist... they say they didnt see much wrong except a little dryness....i never thought about blood sugar or diabetes... i used to eat tons of sugars... this have made me wanna be very serious about my diet and ill slow down on carbs and cut out sugar 85-90% .... im 32... and having glares issues. ....im working out and eating healthy...being overweight isnt fun... im 6"4 270lbs...

I went to see an eye surgeon to check an ERM in the left eye. He told me it was stable at this time but also said there was a small trace of some bleeding in the left of the eye. A tiny trace but he just advised to come back next year for another check-up or come before if any symptoms appear. And also, watch the sugar levels as I'm a diabetic. It kind of left me wondering about the bleed.
PS: It's just annoying you sometimes get even more worried after seeing a doctor than before. Now, I'm wondering will there be more bleeding and how can I feel all right waiting until another check-up?

I lost the vision in my left eye due to this. In the early days of my diabetes (I was young) no one told there was a difference between an Optometrist an ophthalmologist (remember I was young) so I was seeing the optometrist thinking I was getting the eye care I needed.
What was wrong with seeing your optometrist? Both are trained to identify and manage diabetic retinopathy. Only once surgical treatment is warranted do you technically need to see an ophthalmologist.
Doctor Eye Health maybe because it was in the the early 1970s and the optometrist was elderly he lacked the training and skills of today’s optometrist. By the time my diabetic retinopathy was discovered my eye was so filled with blood the ophthalmologist couldn’t see into my eye.

I have been diabetic since the age of 6 and am 15 now. Since the past two years my sugars have been out of control( I'm talking an hba1c of 10+) Can I avoid this condition if I control my sugars from now on or is it already too late?
P.s- I have checked with my opthalmologist and I do not have diabetic retinopathy currently
Thank you so much for the great question! It is never too late to get your sugars under control. I know it is easier said than done. The better controlled your blood glucose the less chance of having problems in the future. You may always have a chance of developing it but you can lower your risk by having better control.
Please keep in mind grains of any kind immediately turn to sugar ... besides actual sugar. A healthy keto diet is fantastic. Check out Dr. Eric Berg vids. blessings.
Please be responsible and don't recommend highly restrictive diets to children especially if there is little science behind said diets!

This is the second day i have a dark shadow in my right bottom left corner eye, but if I closed my eyes I see this shadow like the color of the moon at the left bottom corner as well. I don’t have diabetes........but i might think that this could be about sugars... last month I have noticed bubbles on my peed... so I stop taking sugars to the minimum...... I don’t have any other symptoms, and I am at the sun almost everyday. How do I stop this from developing to a further negative?
I am having shadows also. I hope you go see the Ophthalmologist immediately. I went to see the Optometrist and he made an appointment immediately for me to see the Ophthalmologist!

Can you dissolve cataracts without surgery? My opthalmologist said I have cataracts but he also said it is not urgent to do a surgery yet my vision is getting blurrier everyday. Surgery wait time is 3 months. What should I do in the meantime?
This has me thinking that I should be making an appointment to see my Opthalmologist. I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes at the beginning of the year, my A1C was 10.9 down to 5.6 within 3 months and I lost 38 lbs.
