How to Fillet Crappie Quickly with Mr. Crappie

  • Wally Marshall, a.k.a Mr. Crappie, has probably forgotten more about cleaning crappie than many anglers will ever learn. He's an accomplished angler and promoter, but more than that, he's a man with a genuine love of all things crappie fishing, including cleaning and eating them. In this short video, he shows us how to clean a crappie in under 60 seconds. When he's not explaining how to fillet crappie quickly, he actually cleans them in under 30 seconds. So he can whip through a limit of 20 crappies in under 10 minutes with his Smith's Mr. Crappie Slab-O-Matic Electric Filet Knife. We watched him do it on this outing in Texas.
    Quick, fast, and in a hurry, Marshall demonstrates the best and cleanest cut and de-ribbing technique. Then talks about how he likes to cook them up and his absolute favorite part of the crappie.
    If you want to get good at cleaning crappie quickly, this might be the quickest and simplest video to learn.

    I ordered two of these based on the reviews. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxqmKabisEv81ul5v7OhvVxxOpt2CJruI- Received them on time and they look good. I really like the handle on these knives as they feel good in my hand. I'm giving them 4 stars on look and feel, but have not had the chance to put them to the test yet. I mostly fish for catfish and can hopefully try them out in the next few days. If they hold an edge throughout a limit of catfish, they'll be worth another star.Update...I used the 9" strong and the 9" fillet on a mess of catfish. I did put a sharpening on these before I started. I want a razor edge to fillet fish but they weren't quite that sharp. The people who gave these knives crappy reviews and said they were sending them back was because they weren't razor sharp. So what, do they not have a knife sharpener?? Good grief! I mean you have to sharpen any knife from time to time.I personally like them and am pleased with them. If you're too lazy to sharpen a knife then hire someone to clean your fish lol.I've never bought a knife in my life that would shave hair right out of the box. Don't be afraid to purchase the knives. They're pretty nice in my opinion.

    I waste nothing. He left some meat near the tail and I also use a regular filet knife and take the meat off those ribs he threw away. The riblets are the best part. You don’t fry them as long as the filets or they’ll over cook. I fry them first. I live on a dead end road next to Ray Roberts and saw Wally’s truck go past my home one day and turn around. Guess he was looking for a hidden boat launching place.

      @jamesbarron1202 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@tysonprice109 doesn’t seem worth it but on big crappie and with a 25 fish limit, those ribs will make a decent meal. I’d rather eat them than the fillets.

      @jamesbarron1202 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@adamUDavies same way he does it but after he flipped the fillet and then then started to cut the meat from the skin. I start cutting the meat closer to the tail. He left a small section there. I was raised not to waste fish or game. Those ribs he threw away have a thin slice of meat. I save them all in a pile and after I’m done filleting the sides from all the crappie I take a normal fillet knife (not electric) and start just behind the pin bones and shave that meat off the rib bones. They look like very thick potato chips when you fry them. I do that only on crappie over 12”. The ribs are ready just a few seconds after they float to the top of the oil. Cook them separate from your fillets so you don’t over cook them. Better eating than the fillets to me. You’ll think it’s not worth the trouble but you’ll get 50 of those riblets with a 25 fish limit and it’ll surprise you how much is actually there when you fry them all up. Takes a good sharp knife.

    Most of these comments about "wasting" fish are only valid for a fish that you bought at a market and are disposing of in a landfill. Wally is filleting fish that he has caught and throwing the carcasses back into the lake from which he caught them. Circle of life my friends - eat what you want and put the rest back into the ecosystem where they will eventually become tomorrow's catch.

    • @natty4life387
      @natty4life387 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There's also something called want and waste. Which you can get prosecuted for if you don't take all the edible meat of any game you take from the wild. Yeah circle of life but don't be lazy. Because the hyenas aren't 😢

    • @richardkoch8752
      @richardkoch8752 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yup, do what you want and not what is right. Every creature harvested should be used to it's reasonable usefulness. ALSO in my State throwing the "carcasses" back in the lake is illegal. Mr Crappie is not a true sportsman: a Sportsman does not waste resources that they have harvested.

      I guess they have another definition of fillet/filet. The part he cuts would be considered a riblet, which is not part of the filet cut. (Granted, his cuts could be better or precise...but say if you catch 35 fish, it's about efficiency not maximum yield. Which is the example where filet cuts are best applied)

  • @kellyzillmer3932
    @kellyzillmer3932 หลายเดือนก่อน

    A lot of waste. Disconnect the fillet from the tail before skinning. You can use your thumbnail or, if you prefer, a fork to hold the starting edge in place. Also, don't just cut the ribs off - fillet out the ribs to preserve a good section of sidewall meat. Those two adjustments will take an extra few seconds and yield 20% more fillet. I prefer to scale and then fillet.
