My first-ever Rail Hike in Dry Zone was from Medawachchiya to Anuradhapura over 28km. Since this journey we wanted to do more such rail hikes in the dry zone due to their unique beauty and tough climate challenges.
This trek from Anuradhapura to Mihintale via Mihintale Junction was planned during that trek. Mihintale Railway Line is a short extension off the Northern Line which turns at Mihintale Junction. This Mihintale Junction in fact serves as the starting point for the Mihintale Railway Line which is approximately 14+km in lenght.
This had been built to facilitate the pilgrimages to Mihintale Sacred City. However since the road expansion and infrastructure development, the railway line is largely abandoned. At present, only 3 days a year the trains go on this line which are pre-Poson, Poson and post-Poson days.
Therefore, you won't come across any trains in this section between Mihintale Junction to Mihintale. Even the rail track is badly maintained and overgrown due to lack of usage.
Nevertheless, the beauty of this railway line is out of this world and we enjoyed it so much. You need permission, like any rail hike, to trek along this.
There are two sub stations between Mihintale Junction and Mihintale which are Samagipura (2-3km from Mihintale Junction) and Asokapura (9-10km from Mihintale Junction).

* Avoid careless/irresponsible/money-oriented/mega tour groups or organizers.
* Travel in small groups as Mother Nature can’t afford so many footprints at once. Stick to the designated trails or hardback surfaces at all times.
* Minimize the use of polythene/plastic and do bring them back. Please don’t burn them in the wilderness. Even organic/bio-degradable waste is harmful to the nature and animals. Please stick to the simple rule of “if you pack it in, pack it out”.
* Use reusable water bottles, plates and cups. Even paper cups/plates are harmful and take years to decompose.
* Remain quiet and vigilant. Don’t disturb the tranquility of the nature. Respect wildlife and don’t disturb them in anyway. Also be considerate of other trekkers.
* Please collect and bring any litter/garbage left behind by other careless travellers.
* Don’t light fires unnecessarily and do try to use portable cookers instead of using firewood when camping. If you must, only use firewood on the ground and don’t cut any trees for this.
* Don’t bring any plants back with you or cut any trees/branches unnecessarily..
* Don’t use soap/ shampoo when bathing in natural streams as they contaminate them and kill wildlife.
* Don’t do anything that harms the Mother Nature.

there is very important requirement in southern srilanka for extend railway line beyond beliatta srilankan railway authorities have proven they can build new railways very successfuly but this is ever idiot railway construction in the world
Well, at the time it'd been useful when carpeted roads were not so common. This was also said to be one of those projects undertaken to further one of those politically driven development projects. This could've easily extended to Trinco which would've been more useful.

should close this lin, Puttalam line and Talaimannar line ( part from mannar to talaimannar)
Don't think we should, instead this can be promoted for Rail Hikes and for tourists to visit Mihintale using Rail Carts/Buses.
Mannar and Trinco lines need to be extended to Jaffna so trains can run up to Jaffna serving Pooneryn and Mulativ areas. Rails provides long term stability to these regions. Reason LTTE cut off the Jaffna line to provoke a war.
