  • In this video we review our time spent at the "last true honky tonk of Texas" - the Broken Spoke. We ate their famous chicken steak, listened to live country music and participated in two step lessons hosted by Terri White. A real Texan night out here in Austin ya'll!

🙋‍♂️ Ladies 😃 - I used to go to Austin every March for SXSW in the 90's. Now , I have some friends that reside there & will see them in June after a 2 year hiatus. It's an Oasis of a place. So vibrant ! Love Jolene & dancing 🕺 💃 to the music.

If you're coming over to visit from Europe Austin is like to Texas much in the same way that London is the rest of England or....Rome is the rest of Italy or Berlin is the rest of Germany I think.

That was my first stop when I arrived in Austin in 1980. I met my brother there before going on to his house. That was before cell phones. Broken spoke is not exactly fine dinning. If you are drunk and starving maybe. People used to two step to John Philip Sousa music. They are not professional dancers everyone learns to do it. Did they teach you how to do the Cotton Eye Joe and Shodis?

I am glad you ladies have enjoyed my home state. It takes many trips to see all that Texas has to offer. Just a note, bar food is always underwhelming. For good food look outside the bars. :) As you saw in Lockhart, some of the best places to go are off the beaten path. Some of the best food is found in small family places in small towns. 5 hours North here in Dallas you can find a completely different experience and the same goes for Houston. We have everything from pine forests in the east to rolling plains in the north, to beaches on the south gulf coast and desserts and mountains in the west. You were in what is called the hill country.
East to West along I-20 Texas is 1307 km and South to North from Port Isabel to Texline is 1467 km.

Dang, I've been in Texas all my life and have never walked through those doors. I've only heard about it in songs. Haha, yeah Texas country music mentions all these places, many places I've been too or even people I've met. That's always neat. Country music is a bit like a road map on things to do and where to go.
The other great dance halls are Billy Bob's, which is the largest and in Fort Worth, and Gruene Hall just south of Austin, which is the oldest. It was built in 1870's, very special place. Some very talented and famous bands play at these dance halls.

I lived in Austin in the late eighties and went to the Broken Spoke many times. No cover charge back then and you certainly didn’t go there for the food.

They almost knocked it down (you'll notice it's surrounded by condos now because... Austin), but locals would have rioted, the steep cover is just to keep it alive with property taxes. I know there's preservation/historical site movements, not sure how far that's gotten.

Where is that accent from? Is this how our culture and music styling is being represented in other countries/ other parts of the world, for people thinking about visiting here, and they only have a few days...to see like 1 city in the whole entire state??

Hi Micha, Justina! If ever I get to visit the Broken Spoke, I hope I'll be with friends because I might feel lost in there by myself. Lol! Yes, I did try a chicken fried steak a looong time ago. And I agree the taste is somewhat underwhelming. I think it's because our taste buds have been so internationally cultured already. Do you think so too? Otherwise it looks like a good nite of fun. Hahaha! Saw your IG pics. Great to see you working out! 👋😊

This is a hipster dance hall not a real Texas country music dance hall! Do NOT be fooled by the Austin hipsters who pretend to be country! Lone Star is not the National beer of Texas. The hipsters started that crap. I grew up in the country of Texas and no one ever drank Lone Star! There is very little authentic about the Broken Spoke. My dad is 81 years old and has been country dancing all over Texas his whole life and would never consider going to the Broken Spoke!
