As I remember she lost her Mother at a young age and her Father took care of her. He really cares for her, he is just way too confident. Hercules is most likely the strongest human on earth after Chiaotzu and Videl.

But as I mentioned earlier, he thinks videl is strong and can 1 shot spopovich since he was able to beat him with ease. It is irresponsible of him not to show up when he's being told that his daughter is in trouble, though. I also agree that goku knew Gohan's potential but horribly failed at teaching him how to bring out his power for the cell fight. This is why goku looked desperate in the middle of the fight like the rest of the fighters.

More or less spelled out when they go off to learn about Buu, and Videl says she always had a feeling about her father's claims, and that Gohan was much easier to believe as Cell's destroyer.
Shout out to Videl's voice actress in this episode. Her screams are so authentic that I have to wonder what she was thinking in the booth while dubbing this episode. When she stands up and Spopovic grabs her head, that high pitched scream was real.

But in the dub, after Eren shows up and takes out the titan who's about to kill Mikasa; then he stands there and screams with that primal high pitched yell to show his rage.....that shit is POWERFUL AF. As opposed to the simple emotionless ROAR ARRGGH that the Japanese one has. I mean dub isn't just default useless like it used to be in the 80's & 90's. Voice actors have started to actually put in real emotion in their performances. Goku turning SSJ3 is just one example of "going big or going home." That screaming was his most epic ever.
They didn't interfere in the fight because they respect the tournament matches -- Goku even fought Piccolo with a hole in his chest and never gave up. As long as Videl kept fighting they would respect her wishes, even if it meant she died.
Madison dealt with this gruesome fight like a champ. Loved the moment between Videl and Gohan in the medical room. Looks like they are the last two to realize they are together already

I wait for every single video. I started when Gohan turned Ssj 2 and I not only get to relive watching these like from my childhood on Toonami, but it’s like watching with friends. Please keep this up. It’s mentally appreciating.
I think the thing with Videl not wanna giving up is something like false proud taking over and denying every logical reason. Even after she saw, that Spopovitch got his neck twisted around and simply fixed it back into its normal state.

I will give you folks the neck part but it deffo wasn't ego, it was simple facts. Nobody apart from the Z fighters at some point expected Spopovich to have any chance vs Videl since she is statistically above him. If it wasn't for the powerup she could have beaten him easily and most people never expected him to be this much stronger, even the other normal human fighters are caught by surprise because of the impossible increase in his strength and his ability to use ki blasts or fly.

we have to understand goku, gohan and the others are warriors, they think & behave like warriors, so that means they respect the solemnity of a fight more than us normal folks. That's why they are usually more calm than us when watching a friend getting a beating
I think it's more respecting Videl's decision to keep fighting. They know he's trying to not kill her, and they know she can be healed afterwards, so they want either Videl to give up or Spopovich to finish the fight. Gohan was in the right, but it probably would have made her defeat more personally humiliating if her friend invalidated the fight by jumping in. That's what the other Z Fighters cared more about.
@@deckzone3000 well you are correct, he's not. But notice how at the start of the Buu saga, he's following Goku's behavior. He wants to be with his dad so much that he's all excited for the upcoming fights, and saying he wanted to fight Dabura alone like they initially said.
This was insane as a kid watching it on toonami. Not only were fights in cartoons a lot more soft in general, girls NEVER got hit. That's why this part has always stuck with me.

But I don't think Vegeta's hits quite as hard because he was a villain who happened to be teaming up with the heroes at the time, so he wasn't that sympathetic at the time and his job in the story was really just to hold out for Goku. Videl was a local hero whose beatdown serves to establish and develop characters rather than drive the plot. Since she doesn't deserve it, since this fight doesn't directly drive the story much, and, like you said, since she's a teenage girl getting beaten by a grown man, this one just hits harder emotionally.

Goku didn't let Gohan jump in because he knew Spopovich was not going to kill her and that all he had to do was get a senzu bean! As stated by the Japanese Version, Goku realized there was something going on and letting gohan beat up/kill Spopovich would stop them from finding out the source of the power. Besides, Videl chose not to surrender, she could have quit anytime she wanted to and got out of the arena, at least until he really started beating on her, but she has her fathers arrogance
It wasn't arrogante at all. Statistically she should have been able to beat him easily but neither her normal her father or any of the normal humans were aware of his Babidi powerup. Sure the girl is too stubborn and proud for her own good, but who isn't honestly?? As if Vegeta, Goku or any of the other saiyans aren't. But it deffo wasn't arrogance that got the better of her, it was lack of knowledge on ki and the fact that Spopovich wasn't his normal self anymore
@@deckzone3000 Yeah, they don't know about Buu yet, but senzu beans are not a common thing, its better to save them for later, especially if you know Goku and Vegeta will have a fight soon and one of them will fight with Gohan, anything can happen. Imagine if you are playing a game, and you lost some life during fight with trash mobs, you wont use your best health potion on it, you will heal yourselve with bread, or meat and save potion for a boss fight.
Hercule not taking it seriously that Videl was losing makes sense. He beat Spopovich himself easily at that in the previous tournament in the finals. He knows his daughter is stronger than him.
Man this just hurts to watch. But beyond that when Videl started crying, that was indication she did not want to be in the ring anymore. All that stubbornness and all that tenacity was gone. It was definitely a hostage situation where she was being tortured and unable to leave the ring, and she was scared for her life. It's really something when just small little things can imply so much to one scene. Madison really took this like a champ.
That was actually one of the most brutal beatdowns in anime history geez. Can't wait for Madison to hear Gohan badass line you know the one I'm talking about.

I was honestly dreading this episode solely because of ho brutally Videl was beaten by Spopovich. Everytime I rewatch the series and get to this point the match still gets to me and it makes me feel awful each time
This never give up will of steel of Videl's in this fight, it reminds me of Gohan vs Recoom; the parallels of these 2 characters is why they were such a good match.
According to google, gohan is only 135ish pounds standing at 5'9. Which would make him extremely small in comparison to most men (in weight). So that would make sense as to why Hercule would think he had no chance
As others have said, this scene and the learning to fly scenes are the two best examples of Gohan and Videl getting closer together. That gut punch really makes me wince too thinking about Pan
To Mr. Satans defence, he remembered Spopovic (hope I spelled it right) from before where he wasn´t near as strong. So I absolutely get why he wasn´t worried about Videl squashing him.
I'm recalling an old and weird comic in which Muhamad Ali confronted a Superman without powers in a boxing match. Ali encouraged Superman to go down so as he would be dealing so much damage on Superman, and Sups was keeping himself up just by sheer Willpower.
Even though I’ve seen this before but it’s still so hard to watch Videl being beaten like that and Gohan going super saiyan was cool imagine if he went super saiyan 2 though
I think if we're going to white night Videl, in the sense that she needed saving and was silly for showing such grit and wanting to continue the fight against all odds, we should also be treating the Z Fighters the same way whenever they're getting their asses handed to them by an enemy before they somehow come out on top... she really is a badass (granted, I have the privilege of knowing how the rest canonically turns out) and personally think she should be lauded for just how much she withstood through sheer stubbornness and Vegita-esque pride.
Honestly if Goku didn't understand what was going on and he was in the same situation he wouldn't give up it's only because Goku and Vegeta understand the situation that they were even consider giving up. And when I say give up I don't mean actually give up they would just re treat. After accidentally kicking someone's head so hard that they had spin around and then I see them do all this supernatural stuff that lets me know I have nothing to prove.
Sadly this is the last time we ever see Videl fight. Which really sucks because not only did it end with a truly horrific beating but in true Toriyama fashion he pushes the women to the sidelines. I know Videl is human and therefore could never become strong enough to face the threats the Z Fighters face, but she was still such a great character.
To be fair, Toriyama actually admitted later that he completely forgot about Launch from Dragonball, which is why she was not present at all in the Z series, until towards the end of the Majin Buu Arc. It wasn't just her he forgot about several other DB characters as well. I don't think he does this on purpose tbh. Tho it was kinda sad that Videl didn't really get another chance to help out in a way, so I agree with you on that.
This fight between Videl and Spoppovich is a lot more brutal in the Manga. There’s a scene where Spoppovich knees her in the face knocking some of her teeth out.

Spopovich basically just taking his revenge against Mr. Satan through Videl, that's why he's torturing her. Videl doesn't want to give up because her dad beat Cell, so she's under much more immense pressure of wanting to be better than her dad or beating him. Gohan confused about his feelings so he doesn't want to jump in until he was fully sure at the end there.
Videl was never really the same after this. As far as I recall, she never tangles in these tournaments again. Can't blame her, either. I'd imagine it's too much trauma in the setting.
Videl being crushed is exactly what made DBZ & entertainment in general great back in the day, not shying away for showing autrocities and awfull things. Evil was evil, which made you connect or despise characters more. Like there actally was something at stake; versus all that hosed down & censored crap that is modern day entertainment. Where nothing feels important and villians arent believable at all anymore. Dragon Ball wasnt a show for kids, but despite that it always has been severly censored in the US. And sadly it has been even more hosed down in Super, but that always happens when an established ip gets embraced by the decaying interest of mainstreet. The reason why Videl but also other female characters like the o.g, Lara Croft, Jill Valentine, Xena, She-ra, Sarah Corner, Anya Stroud, Sheva Alomar, Catwoman and so many others were loved & respected; was cause they all went through extreme/horrible hardships. Which they had to overcome themselves to be the bad asses they became, something which is totally lacking for female characters in modern day reboots. And is one of the reasons why modern entertainment sucks anf flops most of the time.
This episode was hard to watch.. They say that Sayian men like strong and aggressive women. Think about it, Bulma, Chi chi, and now videl? All these women have one thing in common. They're TOUGH!
I had nightmares when I first saw this episode. I was about 13 years old. Spopovich did this against Videl to get revenge on Mr Satan. They had disagreements from the past, and that's why Spopovich did it.

Reality is spopovich didn't break any rules in the tournament, it is all videl fault for not giving up when she could have done so at any time. Other characters have it worse, krillin got blown up, goku got a lasered through the chest etc
So there's a huge mixture of why I think Gohan never did anything. First off, he is a very passive person. He's naive in a lot of ways. That and there is a huge amount of reputation for her and her dad on the line in this. If some random backwoods guy showed up to stop something that is supposed to be an honorable tournament that happens once every 3 or 4 years, the crowd would not be pleased by that and it would damage their reputation. Keep in mind, these are elite athletes, these arent some random people. They are made to fight and spend their whole lives honing their own styles of fighting *even the lowbies that showed up for the tournament*. It would be disgraceful and shameful for either of them to call that fight while she's still able to stand up and throw punches. Regardless of how it looks, these are still the worlds toughest competitors and throwing in the towel at a tournament so important, most people that are in these kinds of fights would rather die than surrender. Videl, as proud as she and her family are, she herself has a very strong will to continue, which is shown in this show a lot. I think all these things and probably more are why gohan would never disgrace her, embarrass her, or otherwise by stepping in. These are not random ass people, these are the toughest of the tough, world champion-levels of strength. We are looking at dragon ball z and seeing how weak hercule is compared to the rest of the z fighters, for sure, but in his own rights, hercule is probably stronger than anyone on our earth. I don't know exactly if he is or not, but he is not a weak person at all. And neither are these people. Videl could probably wipe the floor with most people in our world's ufc fighters by herself. You have to separate the show from the scene. In the show she's 'weak', in this scene, she's probably top 10 strongest fighters alive in this world aside from our z fighters.

Breif (Bulma's father) built that house in a capsule on a whim, since I don't believe that the Ox King had any savings in a bank since in the last five episodes his entire Castle burned down in OG Dragon Ball 😂. this was one of the most traumatic episodes I watched as an 8 year old kid back in 98, and still is really hard to watch 24 years later, at 32.

This was insane as a kid watching it on toonami. Not only were fights in cartoons a lot more soft in general, girls NEVER got hit. That's why this part has always stuck with me.

Yeah I gotta say, Gohan not doing a single thing to help videl is one of the most infuriating things in DB history. It wouldn't even be bad if Gohan ever actually got the chance to beat Spopavich, but nope.

@@razortk77g95 I mean, if we're just comparing the brutality itself in a vacuum, those are similar scenes. But I don't think Vegeta's hits quite as hard because he was a villain who happened to be teaming up with the heroes at the time, so he wasn't that sympathetic at the time and his job in the story was really just to hold out for Goku.
Videl was a local hero whose beatdown serves to establish and develop characters rather than drive the plot. Since she doesn't deserve it, since this fight doesn't directly drive the story much, and, like you said, since she's a teenage girl getting beaten by a grown man, this one just hits harder emotionally.

Goku didn't let Gohan jump in because he knew Spopovich was not going to kill her and that all he had to do was get a senzu bean! As stated by the Japanese Version, Goku realized there was something going on and letting gohan beat up/kill Spopovich would stop them from finding out the source of the power.
Besides, Videl chose not to surrender, she could have quit anytime she wanted to and got out of the arena, at least until he really started beating on her, but she has her fathers arrogance
It wasn't arrogante at all. Statistically she should have been able to beat him easily but neither her normal her father or any of the normal humans were aware of his Babidi powerup. Sure the girl is too stubborn and proud for her own good, but who isn't honestly?? As if Vegeta, Goku or any of the other saiyans aren't. But it deffo wasn't arrogance that got the better of her, it was lack of knowledge on ki and the fact that Spopovich wasn't his normal self anymore

They have no reason not to use one. There hasn't been a villain in 7 years. And the z-fighters aren't going to get hurt by anyone in the tournament.
@@deckzone3000 Yeah, they don't know about Buu yet, but senzu beans are not a common thing, its better to save them for later, especially if you know Goku and Vegeta will have a fight soon and one of them will fight with Gohan, anything can happen.
Imagine if you are playing a game, and you lost some life during fight with trash mobs, you wont use your best health potion on it, you will heal yourselve with bread, or meat and save potion for a boss fight.
There’s another dub where Gohan says “Now you answer to me!” Before he rushes the ring. Ligit chills hearing that come from happy go lucky Gohan!
Hercule not taking it seriously that Videl was losing makes sense. He beat Spopovich himself easily at that in the previous tournament in the finals. He knows his daughter is stronger than him.
Man this just hurts to watch. But beyond that when Videl started crying, that was indication she did not want to be in the ring anymore. All that stubbornness and all that tenacity was gone. It was definitely a hostage situation where she was being tortured and unable to leave the ring, and she was scared for her life.
It's really something when just small little things can imply so much to one scene. Madison really took this like a champ.

I was honestly dreading this episode solely because of ho brutally Videl was beaten by Spopovich. Everytime I rewatch the series and get to this point the match still gets to me and it makes me feel awful each time

This never give up will of steel of Videl's in this fight, it reminds me of Gohan vs Recoom; the parallels of these 2 characters is why they were such a good match.
According to google, gohan is only 135ish pounds standing at 5'9. Which would make him extremely small in comparison to most men (in weight). So that would make sense as to why Hercule would think he had no chance
As others have said, this scene and the learning to fly scenes are the two best examples of Gohan and Videl getting closer together. That gut punch really makes me wince too thinking about Pan

I'm recalling an old and weird comic in which Muhamad Ali confronted a Superman without powers in a boxing match. Ali encouraged Superman to go down so as he would be dealing so much damage on Superman, and Sups was keeping himself up just by sheer Willpower.

I think if we're going to white night Videl, in the sense that she needed saving and was silly for showing such grit and wanting to continue the fight against all odds, we should also be treating the Z Fighters the same way whenever they're getting their asses handed to them by an enemy before they somehow come out on top... she really is a badass (granted, I have the privilege of knowing how the rest canonically turns out) and personally think she should be lauded for just how much she withstood through sheer stubbornness and Vegita-esque pride.
Honestly if Goku didn't understand what was going on and he was in the same situation he wouldn't give up it's only because Goku and Vegeta understand the situation that they were even consider giving up. And when I say give up I don't mean actually give up they would just re treat. After accidentally kicking someone's head so hard that they had spin around and then I see them do all this supernatural stuff that lets me know I have nothing to prove.
Sadly this is the last time we ever see Videl fight. Which really sucks because not only did it end with a truly horrific beating but in true Toriyama fashion he pushes the women to the sidelines. I know Videl is human and therefore could never become strong enough to face the threats the Z Fighters face, but she was still such a great character.
To be fair, Toriyama actually admitted later that he completely forgot about Launch from Dragonball, which is why she was not present at all in the Z series, until towards the end of the Majin Buu Arc. It wasn't just her he forgot about several other DB characters as well. I don't think he does this on purpose tbh. Tho it was kinda sad that Videl didn't really get another chance to help out in a way, so I agree with you on that.
This fight between Videl and Spoppovich is a lot more brutal in the Manga. There’s a scene where Spoppovich knees her in the face knocking some of her teeth out.

Videl was never really the same after this. As far as I recall, she never tangles in these tournaments again. Can't blame her, either. I'd imagine it's too much trauma in the setting.

Videl being crushed is exactly what made DBZ & entertainment in general great back in the day, not shying away for showing autrocities and awfull things. Evil was evil, which made you connect or despise characters more. Like there actally was something at stake; versus all that hosed down & censored crap that is modern day entertainment. Where nothing feels important and villians arent believable at all anymore. Dragon Ball wasnt a show for kids, but despite that it always has been severly censored in the US. And sadly it has been even more hosed down in Super, but that always happens when an established ip gets embraced by the decaying interest of mainstreet. The reason why Videl but also other female characters like the o.g, Lara Croft, Jill Valentine, Xena, She-ra, Sarah Corner, Anya Stroud, Sheva Alomar, Catwoman and so many others were loved & respected; was cause they all went through extreme/horrible hardships. Which they had to overcome themselves to be the bad asses they became, something which is totally lacking for female characters in modern day reboots. And is one of the reasons why modern entertainment sucks anf flops most of the time.
This episode was hard to watch.. They say that Sayian men like strong and aggressive women. Think about it, Bulma, Chi chi, and now videl? All these women have one thing in common. They're TOUGH!

I had nightmares when I first saw this episode. I was about 13 years old. Spopovich did this against Videl to get revenge on Mr Satan. They had disagreements from the past, and that's why Spopovich did it.

Reality is spopovich didn't break any rules in the tournament, it is all videl fault for not giving up when she could have done so at any time.
Other characters have it worse, krillin got blown up, goku got a lasered through the chest etc
So there's a huge mixture of why I think Gohan never did anything.
First off, he is a very passive person. He's naive in a lot of ways. That and there is a huge amount of reputation for her and her dad on the line in this. If some random backwoods guy showed up to stop something that is supposed to be an honorable tournament that happens once every 3 or 4 years, the crowd would not be pleased by that and it would damage their reputation. Keep in mind, these are elite athletes, these arent some random people. They are made to fight and spend their whole lives honing their own styles of fighting *even the lowbies that showed up for the tournament*. It would be disgraceful and shameful for either of them to call that fight while she's still able to stand up and throw punches. Regardless of how it looks, these are still the worlds toughest competitors and throwing in the towel at a tournament so important, most people that are in these kinds of fights would rather die than surrender. Videl, as proud as she and her family are, she herself has a very strong will to continue, which is shown in this show a lot. I think all these things and probably more are why gohan would never disgrace her, embarrass her, or otherwise by stepping in. These are not random ass people, these are the toughest of the tough, world champion-levels of strength. We are looking at dragon ball z and seeing how weak hercule is compared to the rest of the z fighters, for sure, but in his own rights, hercule is probably stronger than anyone on our earth. I don't know exactly if he is or not, but he is not a weak person at all. And neither are these people. Videl could probably wipe the floor with most people in our world's ufc fighters by herself. You have to separate the show from the scene. In the show she's 'weak', in this scene, she's probably top 10 strongest fighters alive in this world aside from our z fighters.

I came to the conclusion that DR. Breif (Bulma's father) built that house in a capsule on a whim, since I don't believe that the Ox King had any savings in a bank since in the last five episodes his entire Castle burned down in OG Dragon Ball 😂. That is the only logic, that even the house is not theirs 😁
