I have seen a ton of comments regarding the debate between Venator vs. ISD, but I noticed there's not much talk about the core root of the change in design principles. The two ships were designed for two completely different conflicts. The Venator was designed to be effective at the most things it could be and was outclassed by other ships in almost every category, as the video mentions. It was for a Republic that was desperately trying to deploy a military at the last second, one that could cover all the roles a military needed at once to keep the industrial lines running smoothly. The ISD represents the transition into the Tarkin Doctrine, which opinions aside, was for a completely different scenario. The now Empire was looking to secure its new holdings. It had to maintain control. Control through fear, and the ISD was built to instill fear wherever it went, which it did unequivocally well. It also represents the core flaw of the Empire; Pride. The Empire was so proud of itself that it couldn't conceive of a possibility that they could be brought down. My personal opinion is that as a warship, the Venator is better because it brings more to the table and is easier to mass produce as supplies become more and more limited. But, we can't have this debate without understanding the root of the decisions to transition in design principles.
I think part of the immense charm the Venator has is that you can really see how it fits into a clear naval doctrine, one designed to counter a roughly equal peer, and seeing how it stacks against the Confederacy. The very rapid mobilization of the Republic’s military really lets you see compelling developments and responses in real time. Imperial era capitals , as iconic as they are, just seem like they’re big and scary for the sake of being big and scary. It’s really the perfect case study in comparison of the two eras in Star Wars, it’s really no wonder the Clone Wars is so popular.
With the names at the end I'm reminded of a quote of a theory from a farmboy from Tatooine had about the Emperor's naming convention. Wedge was having a conversation with an Imperial Admiral in Starfighters of Adumar. And brought up a theory Luke had about the names like: Agonizer, Obliterator, and Executor. Basically that the Emperor wanted the people crewing them to know subconsciously they weren't doing good things. A small bit of corruption to start the slide. The names you presented were fine examples of the Old Republic's core beliefs. Very refreshing and well done!
I know it would be a logistical nightmare for them but I really wish the rebels used one or two of these in the cartoons. would of been amazing to see one of these go up against an ISD
The mood of this video puts the venator in a better light than what I'm used to. However something in particular caught my attention, 9:20 is an interesting claim. Her hangers, bridges and engines are her real weaknesses and were exploited. I'd argue that in a way she if far better than the ISD. If anything updated designs of the venator would be better than designing an almost entirely new class. Perhaps a design that was a but larger, had updated hardware like engines, weapons, shields, Hull, construction techniques and other design features that make her more powerful, more efficient, better suited to future needs and eliminate the obvious weaknesses we all know about. The Liberation, captain shack's vessel is a perfect example. When serving with the rebellion they were able to forge her into still being an effective and bad arse vessel despite the rebellion operating very differently. New starfighters changer how she was used, her refits made her more powerful and far more capable at ship to ship combat. She even became efficient at killing ISD's. Which isn't difficult if we are being real. The venator's design should have been built off not replaced. However I guess she wouldn't do the one thing the empire or shall I say tarkin wanted.........fear. OK this comment is long enough I'm going to sleep.
If there was a way to reduce the crew intensity, I can see these functioning as a Rebel Fleet Carrier. Now not as a direct assualt but as a Mobile Base that can jump into an area close to Imperial targets. Have it's Rebel Starfighter jump from their position, hit they're target, jump back and land. The Venator jumps away while rearming the starfighters for another in a new sector. My favourites: 1. First order Resurgent class star destroyer/battle cruiser. 2. Venator class Star destroyer/attack cruiser 3. Tector class Star destroyer 4. Imperial I/II star destroyer
A lot of Clone Wars episodes this week. Of all the Prequel-era capital ships, the Venator-class is the one I personally like the most. Like the clones that crewed them, it's a shame what became of the class during the Empire era. Perhaps a few managed to get into the hands of those who went on to restore the Republic.
At this point to me the breakdowns of the ships, weapons, and tactics as well as soldiers seems more entertaining than the actual shows that holds them.
While I love the imposing figure of the Imperial-I and II Star Destroyers, the Venator remains my favorite. It has such a sleek look that still radiates command and control.
A humble ship with outstanding power if the Empire would have kept these ships as carriers the Rebellion would have had double the trouble at least keep 50 of them
I love these things. They *look* like a Battleship, but not a later Vic or Imperial, but like something from WWII but in Space. Also the Vic replaced them because it was *just better* . Then the Imperial replaced *that* because it was *just better* .
Considering the Venator was rapidly designed and built under circumstances wherein the designers and rapidly assembled military leadership weren't sure of the type of war they will face and still excelling at it's role despite being designed to generally serve multiple roles without prior doctrinal motivations astonished me
I once wrote a fan novella called "The Last Venator" - I really wish this video had existed before I wrote it, because I had to do all the research about its layout and capabilities beforehand. This vid would have saved me truckloads of time in the outlining stage.
My favourite ship in all of Star Wars. I’m not sure what it is about the Venator but I absolutely love it and I love that we’re seeing more of it in the Bad Batch.
I like the dichotomy between the Imperal Star Destroyer and The Venator Cruiser. One is the ultimate battleship geared towards taking down enemy capital ships and destroying the surface of a planet. The other was the ultimate carrier with a vast and diverse complement of star fighters, fighter-bombers, interceptors, heavy fighters, and interceptors.
For more Venator-class information at 12:21: Negotiator - flagship of General Obi-Wan Kenobi Tribunal - flagship of Commander CT-7567 "Rex" Resolute - flagship of General Anakin Skywalker
Without a doubt my favorite capital ship in Star Wars. Beautiful design, excellent performance in all stated roles, and a perfect symbol of power and protection. I still think "star cruiser" is a better designation though, but even that isn't her full extent. She's a cruiser, carrier, and transport all rolled into one. The Clone Wars certainly gave the Venator the spotlight, and I will always love it for that.
Great video, i'm sad that you did not mention the victory class star destroyer, more focus on ship to ship combat, that was developpe during the clone war but was not much use
There is nothing batter then an Veator using its LAATs to drop you right where you were needed and have ATTEs land right next to you! I am a huge aviation fan and carriers even more so but the ability to strike THAT FAR with THAT MUCH power is something a ISD could only dream of achieving.
The Imperator I and Victory I arrived and fought during the battle of Coruscant. The Imperator(native name of Imperial) was a republic era ship. So it's successor the Imperial II and Victory II were more rather down grades in every sense of the book. As the reliance of Star fighters was not what the imperials think a new war would have kept focusing on. So Many point defense, missiles and other anti star fighter capabilities were kept to a bare minimum or not present. The original goal was to have Imperators, victory's serve within fleets of the venators and be the heavy bulk of them. Sadly due to the republic demand for the venator it didn't occur till that late into the war.
I'm just imagining the CIS Fleet with Venators as their centerpiece. The sheer carrying capacity would allow for massive fighter wings combined with the more offensively armed separatists destroyers and frigates would make for a nearly unstoppable navy.

Of all the Prequel-era capital ships, the Venator-class is the one I personally like the most.
Like the clones that crewed them, it's a shame what became of the class during the Empire era.
Perhaps a few managed to get into the hands of those who went on to restore the Republic.
Favorite sci-fi ship. Glad you made a video about it.
A wonderful homage to a beloved ship. Stunning video!
Perhaps my favourite Star Wars Ship.
Props to whoever wrote the script that part after 12:00 is really good.
At this point to me the breakdowns of the ships, weapons, and tactics as well as soldiers seems more entertaining than the actual shows that holds them.
8:44 I've never noticed there was a Venator in the background of this scene
Huh. That explains the map in battlefront 2 where you fight inside a landed venator on the last sector.
While I love the imposing figure of the Imperial-I and II Star Destroyers, the Venator remains my favorite. It has such a sleek look that still radiates command and control.
In The Clone Wars we don't always get a good feeling for the size and reason why a Venator had to be crewed by so many people
IMO one of if not the best Capital Ship in Star Wars 😍
I loved every scene where Venators where Shown in the Bad Batch S2
“mom, can we have Spacedock?”
“we have Spacedock at home”
Spacedock at home:
In my opinion venator Class fits more as a carrier
The prequels gave us some of the best looking Star Wars designs. The Venator is my favorite canon star destroyer
A humble ship with outstanding power if the Empire would have kept these ships as carriers the Rebellion would have had double the trouble at least keep 50 of them
We definetly need a Video about the Chosen One: Anakin Skywalker. But all in all Good Work Guys.
I love these things.
They *look* like a Battleship, but not a later Vic or Imperial, but like something from WWII but in Space.
Also the Vic replaced them because it was *just better* . Then the Imperial replaced *that* because it was *just better* .
Good timing as Lego has just released the UCS Venator, a massive 5,374 pieces. 👍
Considering the Venator was rapidly designed and built under circumstances wherein the designers and rapidly assembled military leadership weren't sure of the type of war they will face and still excelling at it's role despite being designed to generally serve multiple roles without prior doctrinal motivations astonished me
Do a video on the Acclamator assault ship next.
The dorsal side is where the main hangar doors are. Underneath is the ventral side.
If lego could just release a UCS version of this ship I'd be very happy.
My absolute favorite Star wars capitol ship
I like the dichotomy between the Imperal Star Destroyer and The Venator Cruiser.
One is the ultimate battleship geared towards taking down enemy capital ships and destroying the surface of a planet.
The other was the ultimate carrier with a vast and diverse complement of star fighters, fighter-bombers, interceptors, heavy fighters, and interceptors.
The ship the empire should have never replaced
For more Venator-class information at 12:21:
Negotiator - flagship of General Obi-Wan Kenobi
Tribunal - flagship of Commander CT-7567 "Rex"
Resolute - flagship of General Anakin Skywalker
To add one more, Renown - Stolen and turned into a bomb, in which R2-D2 detonated, preventing a disaster.
You made me love the Venators even more.
I love the icon you used for ground vehicles, it's the Mako!
Two Republic lore videos in a row? I like where this is going
*Chefs kiss* my favorite star ship
venator is so cool looking holy crap. i love triangular ships but add in the rear wings and its perfection
Upon sighting a post about the Venator Class Star Destroyer, I naturally clicked on the video. That's my style sir.
'Tis a melancholy thing seeing those grand defenders of the Republic resting on the scrap heap.
Venators are pure unadulterated badass.
Great video, i'm sad that you did not mention the victory class star destroyer, more focus on ship to ship combat, that was developpe during the clone war but was not much use
Next overview should be about the Providence class of the Separatists.
There is nothing batter then an Veator using its LAATs to drop you right where you were needed and have ATTEs land right next to you! I am a huge aviation fan and carriers even more so but the ability to strike THAT FAR with THAT MUCH power is something a ISD could only dream of achieving.
Oh no. At 1:57 it looks like Jar Jar Binx. I can never unsee this now.
Honestly the new republic should have revived the Venator. She fits with their star fighter corp
Always loved the Venator. And I love using it in mods in other games like Stelaris.
Star Wars has some of the coolest-looking ship designs of any sci fi. Venator, Kandossi, Keldabe, Crusader, Harrower, some of my favorites
Probably my favorite star wars ship ever
Nice work on the Venator class Star Destroyer i rather have these Venators in my fleet to serve as carriers
Nothing crashes Better than a Venator ..
I'm just imagining the CIS Fleet with Venators as their centerpiece. The sheer carrying capacity would allow for massive fighter wings combined with the more offensively armed separatists destroyers and frigates would make for a nearly unstoppable navy.
Yeah the Star Wars content is goated
It is easy to see why the Venator has become such a fan favorite.
One of my most favorite ships of all time right next to the lucrehulk batteship...
My dream is to one day have a video like this made on a ship design from one of my own worlds. If that happens, I will have succeeded in life.
