About the fact that the setting is surprising for the first 3D Kirby. I think they're probably using the same mindset they had for Triple Deluxe where the director basically said to his team to not design the game as if it's the first game on 3DS. But instead to imagine that they arleady made a game with the standard grass, desert and lava themes and to make the game as if it's a sequel to that nonexistent game to make it more interesting. And it worked, the world themes were much different than anything you would find in New Super Mario Bros.
And I think that's what they're going for here too. They're acting as if they arleady made a 3D Kirby before and this is the sequel to this nonexistent game.

Arlo, you weren't wrong about them taking steps before diving into a full 3D game. They've been doing that for the past few years, this game was a natural progression of where things were already heading. First we had Kirby Blow Out Blast which remixed the classic formula in 3D, no copy abilities. Then we had Battle Royal which had the copy abilities in 3D. Both games were 3D, but they were more or less minigame tech demos. Star allies had a 3D boss fight AND a 3D hub world. When you put all of this together, this game was clearly their end goal with all of these experiments and tests.

Even then though, we hadn't gotten a proper 3D Kirby adventure. If we got a classic Kirby game that just so happened to be in 3D, we all would've loved it, but no, they went the extra mile and decided on this incredible post-apocalyptic setting. 3D is already a big step for Kirby, and they decided to put him in completely new territory as well instead of playing it safe. That's awesome.

Enough said. Robobot is the peak of this idea. Everything is roboticized. The final world is platforming through a company headquarters. All the normal themes have been give amazing new flare, like blenders and forks as power lines in the desert world, a city world, waddle dees using robotic legs, etc. Star allies does rely on basic themes quite a lot, but it still has its share of uniqueness. Kirby Epic yarn? YARN! Treat Land! Future Land! Beanstalks, sports races, secret islands, etc. And don’t forget Amazing Mirror. Point is, Kirby games never do use the basic junk. And it's always like that to put more enphasis on the new mechanic on the game that seriously changes how the game is played (SuperNova being able to change the scenery, Super Abilities destroying everything, Robobot being Robobot, etc, etc).

The thing is that since HAL has been talking a lot of big stuff like the next game will be the “pinnacle” of Kirby series and how it was being made out to be a HUGE game.
The thing is, Kirby is in a weird spot, it sells too much and is too recognizable to be low on the Nintendo totem poll, despite not being super ambitious and changing its formula all the time.
However, it got to a point with Star Allies made everyone feel kinda iffy on it. RTDL brought traditional Kirby back, Triple Deluxe improved the level design and gimmicks, and Planet Robobot tried to be more ambitious with story and further improved the level design and gimmick integration. Star allies was a bit of a step back, which is why people (even huge fans) agree it’s just ok. The DLC improved it much more and showed HAL really did care about making it an anniversary title, and it sold like 4mil, but it still left everyone in a weird spot.
So, it was left up to HAL. They have never really been ambitious with Kirby because for a smaller series, it was doin really well up until Star Allies regressed and was very noticeable. So HAL could either; continue where they were and keep making fun little Kirby games, OR become more ambitious and try making Kirby a BIG BOY (aka another big Nintendo name like Mario and Zelda) and as a fan, I’m for either, but it’s great to see them attempting to push Kirby to greater heights!
Also the game has gotten ALOT of attention, globally trending p much all day AND almost reaching 1 mil views bu the time I’ve commented this. Pretty impressive! I hope this game fulfills the prophecy and makes Kirby even more popular.
Also thanks for reading all of this if you did, it’s quite long

I'm not sure what your kirby experience has been so far, but if it's just been star allies than no wonder it hasn't grabbed you. Planet Robobot was in my opinion, the peak of the series so far. You should really try playing that or triple deluxe or return to dreamland before writing it off as an uninteresting series to you.
That aside, I'm very interested to see where the new game takes it, and how it adapts the series. We've known a 3D kirby game was inevitable because they've been experimenting a lot with 3D in their spinoffs (Blowout Blast was basic mechanics, Battle Royale was combat with copy abilities), but I wonder how the they'll transfer over the puzzle-platforming appeal of it. They were doing really solid stuff in triple deluxe and robobot with the second plane, but it'll be interesting to see how they can transfer that to 3D if it's not a fixed 2D game.

It should probably be mentioned that HAL HAS been taking those half steps for many years. Kirby first got 3D movement on foot in Air Ride back on the Gamecube, and they've been tinkering with it ever since. Some of the earliest concepts for Return to Dreamland were very similar to what would eventually become Kirby 3D Rumble in Planet Robobot, later expanding into Kirby Blowout Blast. The most recent instance being Kirby Battle Royale, where they first began testing the copy abilities in 3D.
Anyways this is just a long way of saying that this isn't just some wild blind dive into 3D. This has been telegraphed for many many years, and it was going to happen eventually.

I think the whole "free roam" thing is being overblown, it's way too early to be making assumptions like that. Levels seem structured in a pretty linear fashion with a lot of them beckoning back to games like 3D World and Crash Bandicoot with the way the camera is placed. I wouldn't be all too surprised if there's even a level select in there as well. I'd love to be proven wrong but this is still the very first time HAL's trying out a fully 3D Kirby and I think it'd be good to keep that in mind.
I think it's gonna be a lot more like 3D World but with the cool set pieces from Odyssey as a backdrop.

I, too, think this game looks like lots of fun, and I would say I am excited for it, but I’m not sure where Arlo is getting the idea that it is “free roaming.” The footage shown leads me to believe that it is linear with a camera that tracks Kirby in a pre-determined fashion. Maybe it isn’t exactly level based with a world map and all that, but I am just not convinced that it’s as open as Arlo seems to think it is. I would love to be proven wrong though…

I think it'll probably be more like Crash Bandicoot or Mario 3D World, where it's a 3D game that evokes the same feel as a 2D platformer, with mostly linear levels aside from alternate paths.
Kirby level design is already fairly loose and exploration-based, featuring multiple paths and optional areas. I think this will just be that, but in 3D.
Not a huge world where you can go anywhere, nor a small level with multiple objectives like a collect-a-thon, but instead a set of mosty linear levels with some exploration potential. Kirby levels.

I was genuinely impressed by the reveal and presentation of this game. After Star Allies, I was convinced the series needed some type of shake-up, and I also thought about the series truly diving into 3D and doing more with it than just sub-games. And look at what we got - that and way more than what I was expecting. I’m already a huge Kirby fan, but now I’m that much more excited to play this Day 1.

Watching the opening of the video in the direct, I was feverishly wondering what franchise could simultaneously have a post-apocalyptic city this detailed and yet also this cutesy. The seriousness and the cutesy-ness really seemed to be at odds.

As a longtime Kirby fan, I think I'm feeling the Kirby magic here. Loving the vibes, no small thanks to the music lol.
I've been worried about a 3D Kirby game because Kirby's usually slow and doesn't have many complex traversal moves like Mario would. So I feel like if the world's too big it'll feel empty and boring and unengaging. The levels seem mostly linear to me which should help with that, but the main city area may be the hub inbetween unique levels? Who knows! I want more info!
Don't feel bad about not liking Star Allies. It's cute with a lot of returning characters but it's pretty shallow and simplified, even for a Kirby game lol.
If it's good Kirby games you're looking for I'd recommend Superstar Ultra (DS), Epic Yarn, Return to Dreamland (Wii), and the 20th Anniversary Collection for Wii if you can get your hands on it (mostly for Dreamland 3 and Kirby 64). I never did any of the 3DS games but I always hear Planet Robobot was really good.

    @HenrikMyrhaug 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

This was my favourite announcement of the direct by far! I love Kirby, and used to play Kirby Superstar Ultra on the DS all the time (it's probably by far the game I played most on the DS). I didn't pick up Star Allies, since it didn't get the best reviews, and it was supposedly really short for its price. I like to spend money on games based on Fun*Playtime/Price, and a new 2d Kirby game didn't seem so appealing for me at the time (especially after playing the demo).
The trailer looks so great, and I really don't think I could be more excited for a Kirby game, as this looks fun, nostalgic, complex, fresh, and hopefully it will be a game I can squeeze dozens of hours of playtime out of!

As a kirby fan, even 2D kirby I think is in need of a mixup, similar to kirby's adventure, kirby super star or kirby return to dreamland. One big leap that changes things up, a new way a kirby game could be. Of course having 3D kirby is great, I kind of wish for them to go all the way though, it looks like kind of a super mario 3D world version of kirby.
