    With their probing paws and destructive behavior, the raccoon has gained a reputation as a garbage bandit, capable of finding a meal in any urban landscape. Yet despite their proximity to our homes and their evident resourcefulness, very few researchers have truly tested the problem-solving abilities of the “trash panda.” As part of a multi-year study exploring the cognition of raccoons, researchers at the University of Wyoming’s Animal Cognition Lab are pushing the limits of the species’ learning by providing both captivity and street-dwelling specimens with a variety of tests.

    My neighbors had an interesting situation happen. They put in a small pond in the back yard with goldfish. When the raccoons came around the goldfish would go to the deep water to escape. Then the raccoons discovered that if they diverted the waterfall it would pump out all of the water and they could get all of the fish. It wasn't a one time deal either. They repeated this until my neighbor fixed the waterfall so they couldn't do this anymore. I used to have families of raccoons come around (with a bit of food) and I loved to watch them play. I remember putting up a sawhorse with a bucket of water under it. The kits would walk upside down on the sawhorse and generally play while the mother raccoons would lay down to rest. If playfulness is a sign of intelligence then these guys are quite intelligent from what I saw.

    Awesome research. Raccoons are an amazing generalist species. Animal intelligence can be misunderstood by us bc we gauge intelligence based off of human perspective. Raccoons may indeed be "trouble makers".. But aren't we all?

    'Trash Panda' isn't pejorative! It's familial and affectionate :) I understand if they get in my trash, it's because I left my trash unguarded in their biome, and that's on me.

    Great video. I'm raising 2 now that we're abandoned. They're a year old now an open the fridge, open peanut jars, open thier kennel an let the dog out of his and also throw fits when something is taken away form them. They're just like toddlers with sharp teeth and claws.

    I am a proud daddy of 3 baby Raccoons.. Karma,Gypsy,and Bandit
    Karma is soo very loving and social,she goes everywhere with me,she likes grooming my hair and spending all day with me.. she loves music and truck rides,but she's always with me
    We've bonded like a dad and daughter.. Gypsy and Bandit are my lil trouble makers,they are always on the move together,and play together like 2 brothers would.. but Karma has to be with me all the time,they've made my life soo much better 😊
    I got lucky to share our lives together

    They are beautiful animals & so smart & the females are very protective momma's & if you can befriend one they are very lovable & will get along with your cat ( if you have one ) but will defend themselves when attacked the cat won't win ( srry to say ).just try to keep the peace between them & they will be fine together. I think raccoons are misunderstood

    It's not a good idea to mess with one if you see one in the wild because they have sharp claws and teeth. Also, like all mammals, there's a chance of getting rabies.
    Take care and God loves you.

      Not all mammals get/transmit rabies. Rodents and lagomorphs practically never get rabies and there has never been a case of rabies attributed to them (according to the CDC).

    Thank goodness for raccoon's 'reputation.' It has saved them from depredation/extermination by man such that they remain a supremely wonderful, masterful creature.
    That said, I believe within a generation or so raccoons will become fully domesticated. Not that there won't be wild raccoons (at least for a little while longer) but awful humans are going to turn them into pets (as is already being done and has always been done). Now that the internet exists and the 'myths' about raccoons are all blown up, humans are going to take it to the next level and destroy them, like humans have done to everything they've ever grabbed with their grubby little thumbs.

    • @andyroobrick-a-brack9355
      @andyroobrick-a-brack9355 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's unlikely. Raccoons have little social hierarchy in comparison to dogs and cats, and it took is thousands of years to domesticate them. Raccoons, meanwhile, are isolationist and introverted in nature, and really only cooperate when there is little competition for food.

    Really interesting stuff! I recall watching a PBS documentary a year or so ago and they also decided to showcase the raccoons' flexibility when it came to problem solving. Apparently they can recall certain locks and devices to access food for a freakishly long time as well. Just a reminder to people: Don't pet these, they may carry rabies or may have ticks. Do not try to keep a raccoon as a pet. Babies have very specific dietary needs that if not met can easily kill them. They are not domesticated and you cannot tame them.

    • @rhondaphillips9304
      @rhondaphillips9304 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE raccoons! I have had 5 babies that I raised and they are very smart and trainable and they can be tamed but only if gotten at a specific age. But one thing you are very correct about, if not fed correctly, they can die....plus you have to help them go to the bathroom similar to what their momma does. I would gladly raise a raccoon or more because they are special toy heart and I love them so much.
