Most Common Problem fixed - Range Rover L405 - 4.4L TDV8 / S5-Ep2

  • In this episode, we fix the most common oil leak issue on our 4.4L TDV8 Range Rover L405. The leak causes the oil to contaminate the coolant system. Typically, the leak is the oil cooler gasket and can be replaced very easily in a 3 to 30 hour minor repair. It makes also sense to replace the two o-rings of the turbo charger oil supply pipe on the back side of the engine.
    We are not liable for any harm you do to your car, your engine, your surroundings or yourself. Use the information given in this video at your own risk.

    You will be pleased to know that I fixed my own D4 this week. Not based on your advice but based on your motivation to do so. MAF sensor fail, read codes, replaced part, problem solved. Saved $1000 in mechanic fees. Thank you for the inspiration.

      When Land Rover allocated the last run 2015 Defender Heritage Edition, they allocated 400 units to the UK ... and 500 to Germany. They are popular trucks. Do you see anything ionic in British people driving BMW, Audi, and Mercedes vehicles?

    One should always bear in mind that being in the "service of the queen" in itself, a mark of great prestige & honour. So one should "put their big boy trousers on" and get moving as faulty or broken components do not magically fix themselves. 😂 Greetings from Auckland. You just made my Sunday night. Be shure to replace coolant expansion tank cap. A number of coolant leaks are result of stuck pressure relief valve inside this cap.
    So, if it starts to leak somewhere because of pressure inside cooling system can't escape thru the valve and finds weak spots over and over again.

    I have recently discovered your channel and am much enjoying it. I drive a P38 with a BMW engine. I brought it as a project but watching you I get my fix without getting either cold or dirty. It doesn't break, the HVAC book is displayed but the heater works, and I did have problems with the engine speed momently increasing by 300rpm, changed every sensor and then found I could have sorted it by cleaning the MAF sensor, BUT it runs perfect and appears to start easy when the engine is hot.
    I was a little confused by the term 'mole crawler' but then I saw 'Mall Crawler' in one of your comments, and then I knew what you meant, you meant a 'Chelsea Tractor'.

    Some wooden platforms/step to stand on with legs set to enable you to reach easily into the engine may help. You could build a U section around the bonnet. With an easy remove section to allow access to the pit.

    When I bought mine, some 3 years ago, it just had the oil cooler replaced. Apparently it had been a severe leak, and the mechanics had done a very poor job cleaning up the mess. It was smelling burnt oil for a couple of months. But that, along with an unnecessary gearbox adaptation reset after a fluid change, that made the gearbox slip on almost every gear for several weeks, I got it dirt cheap. The oil smell slowly faded and the clutches started to grip again after it had again started to get a grip on realities.
    Looking at all the carbon buildup in your butterfly valve (exactly: It is not a throttle!) and inlet manifold, I think I've got a plan. Mine has done 208 000 km now, so I'll, at least, stick a borescope in there.

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Mine has the slipping trans too. I did a fluid change and adaptation reset. It shifts like new but it is not as solid on launch when cold. Not as good as my LR4 TDV6. Christian

    One solution for comfortable access to the engine bay is to use your two post lift. Raise it to just above engine height (without a vehicle on it) with the arms facing inwards then strap down a sheet of plywood with a piece of foam or similar then, with the bonnet up, drive the RR carefully under it. Shame your lift is outside as it might be a bit chilly at the moment 🥶

    A lot of cars that spurt oil out of rear seals etc and sprays oil mist into the oil breather that feeds warm air into the air box. Many times it's a defective PCV valve causing over pressure. My friend worked at a Volvo dealership and it was very common. Same for my W211 mercedes too.

    My goodness, if u want a Land Rover then u need to make sure u want to work on a Land Rover. I mean when u buy a Landie, u need to also buy a 3 car garage to have the space to work on the Landie and still have space for all the tools. I love cars but im loving the idea of 3 cylinder cars as they become more and more complex. At least u have space with a 3 cylinder. ps. u guys are a inspiration and a warning to prospective landie owners. Nice.

    Great video Christian/Vera Oh happy belated birthday, i once changed an alternator on my Volvo 242GT on my birthday before my girlfriend could take me out to dinner that was almost 40 yrs ago,LOL , Christian i love to work in my garage on my vehicles and own a good propane heater that produces 44,000 BTU's, and here in in Central Canada it is -28 with a windchill of -38 so i will wait a week it is suppose to be back up to -8 to-11 , just a tie rod end and block heater, Volvos are much less complex than the Queen and her delicate parts 😁, you have the best assistant on youtube, organizes , give you tools and even a share of OMG"S and films you to 👍 thx again it is motivating to watch you to

    A foam mat would work and make it less painful to work ontop of the engine bay. Glad to see that it appears to not be that horrific to work on. Also Happy Birthday, such a nice present, a oil leak on a cold day!

    A tip, to clean out the coolant bottle i've read & used mixed washing machine detergent (liquid type) as it breaks down the oil

    I save those black and red terminal caps that come with new batteries. I reuse them again and again for disconnecting and storage.

    Your videos has become one of those things I have to check first thing Sunday morning. May be a bit addictive to be honest. Would be interesting to see how you bled the coolant system. May be you will do one in coming weeks. Keep up the lovely videos rolling.

      it‘s always a mess. we started to open it on the top hoses, it‘s a bit less messy.😅👍 but stuff like that happens in a fraction of time and not really content for a separate video. But watch the next video on my Disco 3. We show it briefly.🙋‍♀️

    I’ve noticed an oil leak back end of the engine no sine from the top, and the coolant seems clean. But I think it’s most likely the oil cooler but going to to do some digging.

    Enjoying watching your adventures and repairs.
    I have recently changed the oil cooler housing on my L322 4.4 tdv8 but also changed the EGR housing to block gasket which is located under the aluminium section in the middle of the V, if you think the bit you did was hard, it's a special world of pain. Mine was leaking coolant and oil externally, also changed the thermostat housing and lots of pipework as it had all gone brittle.

    • @gavindavis2868
      @gavindavis2868 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Is it advised to change the egr housing to block gasket or does an unknown oil leak higher up tend to be oil cooler housing seals? My car is leaking oil down the bell housing and I'm hoping it's from the oil cooler and not further down. Did you see / know it was coming from from Lower down? Thanks

  • @davidsanderson6044
    @davidsanderson6044 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    That wasn't too bad, I changed the oil cooler seals on a Mercedes OM642 engine and compared to a RR it was an absolute nightmare. The Mercedes did at least have a maintenance setting on the bonnet struts which made it a lot easier when sitting on top of the engine to remove the turbo.
