Hey nice car and welcome to the 996 community. I’m the second owner of a 2004 C2 and it’s a great car. Best of luck!

Hi there, I have a 996 and was hearing an intermittent sound from the rear of the car which I assumed was the suspension. Was not consistent on every bump though similar to your problem. I replaced the sway bar bushings, control arms, tie rods, basically everything I could think of. In the end I took the rear rotors off and one off the hand brake drums was broken and floating around. Sometimes it got jammed in place and made no sound, sometimes I heard it on every bump. Drove me mad for months trying to pin it down!

Lain I feel your pain. When I find the issues it’s going to be something stupid that usually never is a problem. But I’m pretty close to finding it. Part 3 should be next week I hope 🤞🏻

@@KevinsEuropeanGarage Thanks! It was a bit frustrating but I knew I would be keeping this car and would eventually replace all the suspension components anyway but was definitely annoying to do all that and still hear it. Anyway, it's like a different car now and set up for another 20 years. Good luck tracking down your issue!

I have tracked down my issue. The video should be coming out soon.

Did you place the bushings under load before you torqued them up? Apparently if you do it without hub jacked up to approximately it’s normal position the bushings can be stressed & squeak when they do return to the normal driving position.

I think you should do this too. I’ve seen this before. It is hard on the bushings if you don’t put a load back on them before tightening the lower control/coffin arm up. They can also make noise if not tightened up with a load on them.

Hi guys I’m running powerflex bushings so the center sleeve can spin separately and is not vulcanized to the bushing. So you don’t have to preload them. But if I was using rubber bushing where the center sleeve can’t spin. You should definitely load the suspension then torque them down.

I can’t remember if yours is a Tip or not. But if it is you can repair the reverse switch which is just under the gear stick plenty of videos showing how to do it. I did mine taking Centre console out is a pain but fixing the switch took minutes and still works two years later

Thanks for watching David. I have a 6spd so it not hard to change at all it’s on the tail side of the tranny takes about 20 min to swap.

Hi Kevin, it looks like this could drive you crazy.
After all the hard work, have you tried driving with a second person in the car to confirm what you are hearing?
    Left side, right side etc.
Is this noise which was covered by old clunking which you notice by removing the loudest noises now?
I have just got all new parts to replace on my 996 carrera from Jan 1998 (french car) but I have choosen to stay stock with Bilstein B4 and meyle control arms and tuning forks and replacing all sway bar bushes and links. I hope to be pleased with end result.
I am interested why you did not stay stock for the shock absorbers?
Good luck anyway and I like to say I appreciate your videos

Thanks for watching Paul. The sound is pretty easy to duplicate and definitely happens when you hit a bump with the right front not so some much when the left front hits a bump. My old struts made noise and the strut tops where shot and the sway bar links rattled. So I’ve had a lot of noises. Now everything in the front is new. I wanted to refresh everything and I’m still having issues but I’m close to the solution and hope to have part3 out next week. What you picked should work out nice going for a stock performance setup. I wanted to be able to set the height where I wanted and have the ability to adjust the shocks for more spirited driving and then later dial it in for a soft ride. I am going to the best performance street setup. No to harsh but be able to be pushed really hard at times.
