3rd mistake puts body out of alignment so I imagine it results in the biggest inefficiency. However, which one is the worst to one specific swimmer, also depends on the degree of the mistake, ie slightly or obviously.
I'd also go for the 3rd because it's the one that shows me that you are not comfortable in the water. If you know how to breathe and are relaxed, all other problems can be solved.
Extremely helpful video. My only suggestion is to split the screen into two videos, showing the mistake and correct technique side by side in slow motion.

As the fear of drowning is the most basic fear, we tend to breathe in too much air. Probably your problem is too much CO2 in body because you breathe in large amounts of air and not exhaling all the way. You can exhale for much longer periods than inhaling. When feelnig you can't breathe anymore, stop at the end of the pool, hold on to a rim and try to find a calm breath cycle by inhaling above and exhaling with head under water by being focused on your breathing as you're doing it. Try this for a week and you'll be surprised how your breathing improved. REMEBER TO EXHALE FULLY! You can also practice outaide the pool by holding your breath as long as you can whilst you exale.
I have just started swimming recently (~1 month ago) and there is no adult class at the pool where I'm going, so I have relied on watching many YT videos explaining how to swim properly. This was the best freestyle swimming lesson video I came across and it REALLY helped me.: Yesterday I made use of your precious advices and "unlocked" my first mile of consecutive freestyle without even getting tired (I know it's nothing but before I was able to only swim for 250m consecutively, so it's at least a factor 4 boost just happening out of the blue). So, thank you very much, I will keep trying to improve following your videos!
Patty Bishop no age n never too late to learn when there is a will there is hope You can learn anything in this life it all depends on the teacher This video is fantastic I started swimming a year nhalf ago From unable to swim 25 meters without beeing out of breath due tozero techniques Now i swim freely in freestyle And after exactly a year i was able to swim a full 1 km in one shot And sometimes 2 km when my schedule allows I wasnt a swimmer quiet afraid of water especially deep water It bothered me for so many years Finaly i told myself enough i ve got to know n learn how to properly swim
Bro… you have the most common sense way of explaining technique. I’ve watched so many videos and all of them combined still don’t compare to one of your videos. I appreciate your insight!!!
Thank you for making this. I realized that I was doing a lot of things wrong and this really helped and made me realize how to swim correctly. Once I put it into practice the results were amazing. Thank you!!
Hands down, this is one of the best freestyle swimming advice videos around here! I am swimming casually freestyle since a few years and working on those mistakes, helped me increasing my speed and endurance big time! Last habit i broke, was doing strokes while breathing. Fixing this, really took some hours, but once you get the hang on it, you see an improvement immediately! Thanks!
This is the most detailed video on FreeStyle Swimming. You have done an absolutely amazing job at explaining the cruical aspects. Indeed the best video on FreeStyle. Keep-up the wonderful work.
Definitely #2. Never seen a video directly call this out and I notice that my breathing side I always pull much earlier than my non pulling side. Going to focus on this on my next swim session.
thank you! I've improved tremendously my freestyle in the past months but this helped me calrify some doubts I had been having that needed to be addressed. Now I'm excited to try my corrections tomorrow in my training session.
This is really helpful. I tried the moves to correct the breathing and short stroke problems I had and I have seen a 10% improvement in time the first day. It is encouraging! Keep up the good work. Really enjoy your videos.
Thank you so much for this hugely helpful video. I'm not young, so it's very hard for me to get a trainer really willing to take me seriously and spend his time to help me, so these videos are like gold to me!
Superb video. I trained for years as a masters (adult) swimmer and competed. My front crawl stroke was never right. How I wish I'd had this video to work from, it's the best instructional material I've ever seen
I have never known how to swim all of my life. I have always just stood in the pool or ocean just watching my wife and 3 children swimming and finally took swimming lessons for 2 sessions in a row last year and I have never been shown these techniques. I finished still not knowing how to swim. These are exactly what I should have been shown. I find I'm partial to oxygen so I needed to know how to breathe while practising the techniques. Thank you very much. (By the way I'll be 71 this year and was born and brought up near an ocean beach).
Thank you!!!! My lower back always hurt when swimming due to excessive neck elevation when breathing and same with my shoulder after a couple of minutes. You’ve really helped me a lot
Thanks for the tips in this video !! I've had difficulties in freestyle swimming recently as I wanted to improve my swimming skills. To me, the biggest mistake might be lifting head while taking a breath and low elbow stroke, plus wrong kicking, and I felt extremely tired every time I do a freestyle swim.
Thanks for making this video! It's particularly helpful to see you performing the movements out of the water and at different angles, so that everything can be seen clearly!
Really nicely explained and demonstrated. I didn't really know the proper arm swing until now. Something I've noticed on pros when breathing is that thanks to the speed they carry, the head cuts through the water and creates a kind of wake which leaves a sort of "vacuum" and that leaves the swimmer's mouth actually below water level which allows him to breath without having to turn the head more than 90° without lifting the head as you also rightly mention as the mistake. Am I correct?
Thank you so much you are a brilliant teacher I have saved this video as its packed with important and useful information for beginners swimmers. I have made some good notes and tomorrow I shall be going through your drills at the pool. As a beginner swimmer please do video on fear when beginners feet can not touch the ground how to over come the fear of water thanks
BEST swim video I've ever seen... period!!! The forearm/elbow tip is golden. The breathing one too. I can't wait to go try them at the pool. Subscribed! Thank you!!!
I want to thank you so much for this video. I went from cramping up after 100 yards to being able to swim 500 without cramping in 1 day. Can't wait to continue working on it.
I think low elbow arm stroke is the biggest problem. I love how well the video shows the correct and incorrect way. All 5 mistakes are committed. By me.
A big Thank you for including the legs. Most instructional videos pay little attention to the legs. Having said that, the most common mistake for me is everything you've instructed, especially lifting head out of water to take breath .
My shoulder was paining because I was opening my palms while taking it out of water - I realised that it was creating a lot drag and was incorrect. I was also doing short arm strokes and getting tired quickly. I learned more about breathing quickly and smoothly. Thank you for this informative video.
you have so much information here but I love to come back again and again. Would you do a video for those who are attempting swimming as adult. I think the paradigm is different for learning as a young person. Thanks I enjoy your channel :-)
Thanks so much I am 67 years old and have never swam laps before I started swimming 12 months ago doing a form of breast stroke. I got up to 60 laps in an hour and 40 mins decided to change to freestyle and only swim for 60 mins as I was too exhausted for the rest of the day. Now I swim freestyle with added flippers as I couldn’t even swim a full lap without them. I swim 50 laps in around 65 mins 5days a week . I’m hoping I can get the right technique so I can enjoy my swimming much more. I just stumbled across this video on TH-cam and I love it.You give easy instructions so I am hoping I can adjust my swimming style to make it more enjoyable for me. Thank you so much. Cheers 🥂 to better swimming 🏊🏼♀️🏊🏼♀️🏊🏼♀️🏊🏼♀️🏊🏼♀️🏊🏼♀️🏊🏼♀️🏊🏼♀️
Thank you. Look forward to improving my freestyle tecnique. Although in shape, when I swimm freestile I get tired too fast. I will implement these recommendations to be more eficient.
Yet again, a brilliant video from Swim Up. Low elbow stroke and arm stroke while breathing were particularly helpful for me as these are my biggest errors. Very simple corrections are given. I have already videoed myself performing the arm stroke and can see the benefits already of turning the forearm into the correct position. Looking forward to practicing these. You have a new subscriber! Bravo.
I have always been a fastest swimmer in the group. I started swimming very early without any coaches or lessons it was just like an essential life skill for me. I realised that there was something wrong when I was out of my breathe after 20 mins of free style swimming and some old dude just kept swimming for a straight hour. Now I see how inefficient and wrong my swimming style was... I breathe after 10-15 strokes. I hold my breathe. I always breathe from the same side. I don't use my legs at all..
Thank you so much for such an informative video. My speed increased so much ever since I watched the video. My mistake was the low elbow arm stroke. Now I’m catching a lot more water.
Video relevant to all beginners, thanks a lot. Just to add on, you should probably mention how strokes are to be performed with leg kicks; e.g. right arm stroke -> left leg kick. This helps the body to be balanced in the water and decrease considerably drag in the water.
Thank you for giving us learners another great video. I’ve recently realized that shoulder flexibility, round shoulders to be specific, can limit how much a swimmer’s ability to perform proper techniques & recruit lats. One year into swimming as an adult, my swimming still doesn’t get my lats sore anywhere noticeable like lat pull down. I started butterfly a little bit and suspected that not having enough shoulder flexibility is one of the reasons I can’t seem to get my arms out of the water sufficiently. Will you kindly consider to do a video on a extensive shoulder flexibility routine? Thank you!
Very good point- I am thinking the same. When I looked at the mirror, while hand extended vertically upward, I was shocked to see (side-view) that it is not straight, like I think it was.. another prof. swimmer standing by my side did the same - his hand was extended straight. My limitation - shoulder flexibility.
This is really very good. Though I have watched many videos and still struggling to avoid mistakes. I believe this video will definitely help me to improve efficiency. As I get tired too soon with free style, I switch to breast stroke, which I am able to do very relaxed and for long. Let me focus on avoiding these mistakes. Thanks for the super video.
thanks a lot! I basically had all of the problems you described - I just enjoy swimming but like for recreation and the way I feel relaxed and effortless deeply breathing after training. I swim 2-3 times per week. I will try work on those 5 points.
This video is wonderful. It clearly identifies common problems and how to fix them. The analysis is targeted, explained in basic terms, and very helpful. Thank you for posting it.
This video is very helpful, you tackled the most common mistakes, the most important one is the arm elbow movement, this completely changed my swimming technique. Thanks!
Thanks for the advice!! Im just getting back into swimming after a few years, I’ve mostly been focussing on running and marathons and bike riding, but I’ve never really committed to swimming, now that’s changed!
Hey man; love the videos. Very informative, concise and technical. I was wondering if you could cover a video on swimming underwater? What is most efficient? For the Marine Corps I need to do atleast 2 laps without resurfacing. Big lungs help but being efficient and swift is also important but I've never had a lesson on underwater swimming.
I am going swimming today after a year or 2 and decided to watch a training video to recall some moves and realized I've almost forgot every thing... tnx for this helpful video
Fantastic video, I have decided recently to swim correctly as I love swimming and I am self taught. Now I know what to do. I will implement all advice during the next swimming. Thanks a lot!
Recently, I learned how to be in the pool comfortable, in other words, I learned how not to sink. But, I want to learn how to swim properly. This video made me realized the mistakes I make when I practice. For example, my arm strokes are not strong enough because I am not pushing the water instead I am spinning it. Also, the breathing part. I have to breathe while my hand is in front, not arm stoke when you are taking air, “Start a new arm stroke only when your head is back after the breath.” Kicking against the wall is a good technique to practice taking a breath, it will allow turning to the side to get air instead of lifting the head up. For sure, I will try the techniques that the video provided. A comment says to show the mistake and correct technique side by side in slow motion and I totally agree.
For those of you who find the panic attacking when you swim in depth always remember No matter how much water u have beneath your feet, your head will always be 10 cm under the water. This helped me a lot. I hope it helps someone out there 😊😊
Wow, I love to swim, but never learned proper technique. Self-taught...from books😂 My son is learning now and I want to get in the pool, too. I do at least 3 or 4 of these. Thank you for such an informative video. Beautiful swimming!
Best explanation of high elbow. I've been trying to correct my stroke without actually understanding what im'doing wrong. Can't wait to try it out in the pool tomorrow
Great video tutorial I was an okay competitive swimmer in my young years up to state level Freestyle and breaststroke were my strokes Now as a much older swimmer in my 50's im back training abd competing with masters Ive been really working hard on my technique I think my leg kick lets me down a bit Im back down to a 30.8 for a 50m freestyle and around 1:10 for the 100m Ive tried to do some leg kick drills but i feel like im standing still in the water Just kicking with a board it takes me about 55 secs to do the 50m so i think my 30.8 is from my high stroke rate I would love to go sub 30 again like i did in my younger days and i feel like i could if only i could improve my kick Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated 👍🙂
Thanks for this video. I haven't swum for a while but my take away from this video is I was not positioning my elbow correctly for the catch and starting the catch before finishing breathing and straightening up my head. I look forward to trying this out.
This BEST VIDEO I found... im saving it to rewatch many many times!!! Thank you. My mistakes are not so much mistakes because I don't know what correct swimming techniques are. I have an instructor who tries his best to teach me. But he doesn't teach me on dry land. He teaches me inside the water and it is hard because swimming is new to me. I have very hard time coordinating the correct techniques.
Hello! FInally someone who makes a video that actually makes sense. Congratulations. You don't find these little (yet important mistakes) in other freestyle mistake youtube videos.
i was wondering about that. especially given that these are swimming basics and not tweeking an olympian's technique. are the others worried that they will lose control over this secret knowledge?
Ronnette Radican congrats, I’m just getting back into swimming now because of the lockdown and pools are opening up here. I learned to swim fairly old at 23, I’m 30 now hoping I can improve my ability.
Ian Thorpe was the longest arm stroke in history . It gave him a hell of a smooth slide ahead that can be compared to dolphins not to humans . Also he has got the finest push generated by leg movements which is very unique among all other swimmers , Add to this his tall and slim body and that makes him a real shark in water . In my opinion he's the greatest freestyle swimmer of all time .
Thank you very much for posting these tips on swimming. I recently started using swimming as a workout. It feels great. Thank you again. All the best to you. I’m from NYC 👍🏽
Thanks for this video. My challenges are to breath every 3 arm strokes, so alternating right and left side ... not so easy on left side, I tend to go out from water level too much with my head ! Another point I need to work on is avoiding the water in the ears that sometimes happens especially when breathing on left side... swim cap can help !
What do you think is the biggest mistake?
1st - Low elbow arm stroke
2nd - Arm stroke while breathing
3rd - Lifting head for taking a breath
SwimUP 3
1st
3rd mistake puts body out of alignment so I imagine it results in the biggest inefficiency. However, which one is the worst to one specific swimmer, also depends on the degree of the mistake, ie slightly or obviously.

Kuthan CELEBI good advice indeed.
Yeah that will help beacause newbies like me, mistake and correct technique kind of like the same to me
IMO, This video is well made. But I also think it would be better if signs to distinguish between wrong and correct cases are more clear
Yararlı felan değil eğer beginner değilsen bu hataları zaten biliyor olman lazım.
Thank you for the feedback! We will improve our future videos!
that feeling when you watch him swimming on WRONG mode but for you it looks smooth and perfect

Thanks a lot for this video
It would help me a lot
I was wondering, what was wrong... seemed smooth to me
Even when this guy makes all the mistakes he still swims 10x faster than me.
Please translate this video in italian asap!
Haha.. yes, i agree, me too can't swim faster like him😁🤣🏊♂️🏊♀️
Even if he makes all the mistakes simultaneously )
😂 You made me laugh out loud 😂. It is my case too !!

I definitely struggle with the breathing. My form falls apart completely when i feel desperate for a breath. I’m a beginner and it’s so hard to focus on the correct form when I feel distracted by breathing at the wrong intervals. I will definitely be trying your drills to improve my breathing patterns! Thanks for the great video!
Do breathing walk.. improve some breathing... then practice better... in time you'll gain confidence and will do better
focus on breathing out when in the water so you don't hyperventilate. Make small bubbles when breathing out.
This is my issue. I really want to get better 😞
As the fear of drowning is the most basic fear, we tend to breathe in too much air. Probably your problem is too much CO2 in body because you breathe in large amounts of air and not exhaling all the way. You can exhale for much longer periods than inhaling. Me too whenever's I'm freestyle I always go out of form and when I breathe I feel like I don't HAVE oxygen and I have no energy after I breath

breathing from the same side isn't an issue, most Olympic swimmers do that
Breathing on one side is proper. Holding your breath starved your muscles of oxygen ! End up w fatigue and lactic acid build up
Ah, I had been facing the same issue, but I got tired very fast, I thought breathing less will save time somehow.
@@dogeman0719 it does save time but it's more demanding on your body

And here I thought I was swimming properly. My whole life has been a lie
Better to discover that late than never. Cheer up and continue to swim ;-)
Just keep your chin up
That’s the way it goes;D
🤣
This is the best swimming video I have seen, you are a natural, great teacher Evgeny
B W thank you very much!
This video is wonderful. It clearly identifies common problems and how to fix them. The analysis is targeted, explained in basic terms, and very helpful. Thank you for posting it.
I was taught to breath during strokes... Well this is going to be hell to fix.
Never commented on a swimming video year, but this is fantastic!
Funky Mary
True for me. Watched many videos. Couldn’t resist appreciation for this video.
Swimming is like cycling , you can't forget it bruh .
Great video. I have challenged myself to learn on my own with the help of tutorials. This video will differently help a lot.
Thanks!
For those of you who find the panic attacking when you swim in depth always remember
No matter how much water u have beneath your feet, your head will always be 10 cm under the water.
This helped me a lot. I hope it helps someone out there 😊😊
A very good video for self-taught swimmers!
Wow, I love to swim, but never learned proper technique. Self-taught...from books😂 My son is learning now and I want to get in the pool, too. I do at least 3 or 4 of these. Thank you for such an informative video. Beautiful swimming!
Grateful for this video. Many thanks.I practiced elbows and breaths today and I could swim all the 50 metres without having to change style for breath.
Best explanation of high elbow. I've been trying to correct my stroke without actually understanding what im'doing wrong. Can't wait to try it out in the pool tomorrow
I was drinking a bottle of water while watching this and it seem refreshing.
Thank you so much ❤️ lol trying not to embarrass myself at the pool. I looked so professional🥰
Great video tutorial
I was an okay competitive swimmer in my young years up to state level
Freestyle and breaststroke were my strokes
Now as a much older swimmer in my 50's im back training abd competing with masters
Ive been really working hard on my technique
I think my leg kick lets me down a bit
Im back down to a 30.8 for a 50m freestyle and around 1:10 for the 100m
Ive tried to do some leg kick drills but i feel like im standing still in the water
Just kicking with a board it takes me about 55 secs to do the 50m so i think my 30.8 is from my high stroke rate
I would love to go sub 30 again like i did in my younger days and i feel like i could if only i could improve my kick
Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated 👍🙂
I started swimming from today and needed guidance. thank you so much for this! so well explained 🙏🏼 god bless you!
It was really helpful that you showed the arm strokes out of the water too. Thank you
Should do a split screen of the Right vs Wrong. Easier for comparison. 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the feedback! I will do it in the next videos!
SwimUp Thank you. Split screen showing correct and incorrect styles would be amazing. Either top and bottom splits, or left and right splits. 👍👍👍
It’s the best video I’ve never watched before~!!! Thank you so much~! I really appreciate it!
Melhor explicação até hoje 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks a lot for the tips. I was doing all these 5 mistakes. After watching your video my swimming improved a geat deal.
Pp
Amazing video. Very well thought out !! Thanks
Thank you for all the information!! I have looked through a couple clips and I saved this one for future reference! Very detailed and informative!!
This is by far the best video i have seen on teaching techniques of free style.
Breathing is my difficult move.
Yeah
same, it messes me up everytime
@@chrissinha3931 I posted 7 months ago. I learn my own body to know what best techniques. Now I can swim 1 mile.
Ronnette Radican congrats, I’m just getting back into swimming now because of the lockdown and pools are opening up here. I learned to swim fairly old at 23, I’m 30 now hoping I can improve my ability.
@@chrissinha3931 I learned at the age of 57. Thank you.
I’m watching this right before my swim practice lmao. 😎tryna keep up
hahhaha same xDD
Thank you for your comment!
