You can ask any question about swimming technique! I will answer all of them! What are you going to do first? - Decrease water resistance - Increase power of your arm strokes? Let me know in the comments!
I just turned 60. Never swam except for fun. Started swimming three months ago and I’m up to 2/3 of a mile, a miracle for me. Thank you for all the little corrections your videos have helped me make. They have made a huge difference in efficiency and form.
You have the best tutorials on YT. I've watched a bunch. A lot of them show 10 seconds of video and then lecture for 10 minutes. It seems to me they love to show their faces on YT rather than showing the real swimming. You do a great job.
Between this and the 5 common mistakes video alone, I've learned more than I ever did in so many years of trying to swim. Thank you so much for the great tips and specially for keeping it simple and easy to understand!!!
Coincidentally the exact three things I'm working with my student on. New Masters swimmers don't like to glide with the arm out in front of them but rather they want to turn them over in opposite fashion like pedaling a bike. I explain that most of the arm stroke is out in front of you like climbing the rungs of a ladder - lots of catchup drills to develop that feeling. Additionally we are trying to translate bobbing action (from pushing down on the bottom of the pool) into rotational force with the catch. Great videos, thanks. The big ball visual is perfect.
I wish this sort of video-based coaching was available when i learned to swim nearly thirty years ago! Really clear and concise, and have added a lot of enjoyment back for me of being in the water. Thank you.
@@SwimUp First swim today trying to put some of your tips in this video into practice. I wasn't *hugely* faster (but practice makes perfect right?), but certainly a LOT less tiring - literally putting my back into it by using my back muscles properly as you suggest has immediately made everything more relaxed and less tiring for me even though it's my first time trying to make myself apply a new technique (and undo maybe 30 years or so of poor technique). There were maybe one or two laps (in my 2.1km / 84 x 25m swim) where it really came together and that sensation of just really gliding through the water quickly and efficiently is lovely :) I can also see that I really need to work on my stroke technique; I'm definitely pushing water "down" rather than "back" too much so I can also see a path to make rapid improvements already next time I'm in the pool. This really has been a great video for me, so thank you again.

Great video!!! Your explanations are clear and effective👌🏾 I signed up for swimming lessons 3 weeks ago and I discovered your channel while looking for tips to help me learn the correct swimming technique. I have been following your advice and practising in between lessons. My swimming coach cannot believe how fast I am progressing😅. Your video on “how to swim smoothly without getting tired”, especially the tips on always keeping one arm gliding in front and swimming in a slow manner, was a game changer. I was able to swim a full lap of freestyle without getting tired by the time I reach the end and I was moving smoothly💃🏾💃🏾. Thank you so much for taking the time to put such informative videos. I’m obsessed with your channel😅
Brilliant coaching thank you . I worked on body rotation and not hurrying my arms - the feeling of gliding speed was awesome. This is reducing my water resistance- thank you so much 🙏
OMG! Thank you so very much for the tips of the arms strokes! I have never been trained on how to swim but just like it. I imagined holding a ball while I swam a moment ago this afternoon, it has improved my speed dramatically. Unbelievable! Thank you!
Thank you for your very precious tips, i am 38 years old and have weight 98kg, i started swimming 1 months before and now by applying your technique i swim fast.
I love swimming but last year i had to quit my classes. Your videos are awesome and really reminding me of how amazing this sport is!! I'm starting again in a few days. Thanks you so much!!💕💕
I have learned a lot from you to coach my daughter. Before she dives in the pool, I would ask her to show me if her arms, elbows and hands are super relaxed. She is quite a good swimmer at 8 years old. Thanks !
Really love your videos man. I am trying to learn to swim by following your techniques .I just hope that I can practically accomplish it in the coming days.

Is there any specific breathing pattern you recommend before arriving at wall for flip turn? So that I can sustain longer under water for performing dolphin kicks.
I would recommend taking a breath 2 arm strokes before the turn. If you inhale only 1 arm stroke before, you will not be ready for the flip turn. Just remember to take a quick and deep breath! I am sure, for all swimmers it is hard to dolphin kicks due to lack of oxygen.

what is ideal strokes to take breath?. I noticed that after couple of laps without stopping I tend to take breath every two strokes, which feels like am slowing down..
Swimming is my passion, but it's always something to learn. Being an exchampion swimmer doesn't mean that you know everything, sometimes you are just talented but you always need to learn something new. This is me!
I am working on my hip rotation now. I found that I cannot get a high elbow to catch more water with my left arm. Very recently, I discovered that the reason was because of my hip rotation when I'm pulling with my left arm is not enough. I'm fixing that now and I am catching more water with my left arm (that is, I am achieving a better high elbow with my left arm now). It's difficult because I am trying to change a habit of many years. Thanks for your video. I can see that I am on the right track with my technique since you have very good hip rotation and also very good high elbow with both arms. There is also the benefit of the serape effect with good hip rotation and coordination with your arms. Anyway, great video.
Thank you so much for your videos! We use them to work on my daughter's technique! Any recommendations around exercises on keeping arms in correct position for freestyle? She bends her elbows. Spasibo!
Tough call! I'd try to do both during a training sesison and progress on both counts at the same time. Increasing the efficacy of the arm stroke makes keeping your legs up easier, which in turns helps you rotate your pelvis better which in turns helps position the head right for breathing... On the other hand you will only improve your arm catch in as much as you improve your position in water... Therefore for beginners maybe decreasing water resistance, specifically keeping the legs up, is the most important one, maybe? Except working on powerful arm strokes is sooo much more rewarding! Motivation has to be taken into account. So, again, a little bit of both as the two objectives enable each other. Thanks for your video. I really liked the part on using the back muscles which you made very clear, although of course it could be a topic for a specific video. There is much power to be unleashed there. I am *by far* not a great swimmer, or a muscular person, but when I discovered I could use my back muscles, I felt like Superman! (albeit a very wet one).
Excellent every advice you told us! I will explore the water resistance to be my guide to adjust the others topics. Thankful I am for your generosity sharing what you know.
Hello, Your tips are helpful. Thank you for sharing your experience. Some people may not improve their time with these, because they are doing in a good time. But, These are really good tips for many. Thanks once again.
Dude, this is video for begginers, of course you can`t improve your time much if you really do it with this time which you mentioned. But for some who swim from a long time with wrong technique is great...
After swimming 50-80m freestyle i started getting exhausted or feeling out of breath ,so what should i have to do?.... either i have to slow down my kicking speed or anything else is there to improve my freestyle?...plz let me know my shortcomings to improve myself with best technic.
Hello, I guess you perform too many kicks and your breathing technique can be not so efficient. Focus on keeping your head in the water when inhaling and to perform all movements in a relaxed manner. I hope it will help you! :)
Thanks again, with this video I am learning so many things. On TH-cam there are many different kinds of videos for to learn how to swim better I think this is a great video
The only problem I feel that I had is leg sinking problem. Many of my friends and coaches commented and point out the same problem. I started to swim last year (2019) at age 38yo. One of the coach said that my body is too stiff and not flexible, probably due to my "muscular body" . He often said that I should arch my back so that I don't sink. But I already did my best but still cannot arch properly and end up sinking. I figured out that one of the way to make my leg not sinking is to dip my head deeper to pool, however I feel struggling when breathing again. So can you please share some tips of how to correct the sinking leg problem. What drill do you suggest to increase flexibility for a swimmer?
I just learning free style swimming. I watch other videos that says we should bend the elbow to get more power when crawling, but in this video I see less elbow bending. Can you explain ? Thanks
Great video, I have been swimming incorrectly for years. Just not pulling the water correctly as my elbow drops too early in the beginning of my arm stroke. Just applying this has resulted in me being able to swim longer without getting tired. Any more drills (apart from swimming with paddles) that you can suggest to improve free style?
Hello, Thank you for your comment! Well, there are many drill you can use for improving freestyle technique. You can check them in our swimming app - SwimUp. You can choose Technique workouts and you will see many different drills.
Nice and interesting. Good explanations. I would just prefer if you write/tell more explanation what's exactly wrong in that videos where you mark it with wrong. (especially for the last one it is very difficult to find the mistake for me)
So does the pelvis initiate the body rotation please? Or does it follow the shoulders? I’m wondering what is the trigger movement in the rotation as I seem to stall when I try to exaggerate my current rotation.
Thanks for the video. Could you do a video on breathing techniques, i can't take air and thus i am unable to swim properly. There's always water on my nose and with mouth i can't take sufficient air.
Hello, Thanks for the comment! I will make a video about breathing in near future! We have a video about breathing and body position, please check it out: th-cam.com/video/grqQu9oEcEE/w-d-xo.html
Hi Evgeny, a question about whether there is any weight transfer during the stroke? I have heard it said that when the catch is established, we should be thinking of actually moving our body past the arm in the catch position. How would we do this? It occurred to me that this may be where the thinking is to transfer weight forward because perhaps as the catch is initiated, there is enough purchase on the water to transfer weight forward? This may be why it seems you have an awesome glide with significant momentum? Appreciate your feedback on this and thanks again for a brilliant video.
Hello David, I have heard about this weight transferring some time ago. I do not like thinking about this, because in swimming we have some speed and we do not need to transfer weight anywhere. We need to catch the water and push ourselves forwards with the least possible water resistance. I guess, this weight transferring can cause too much thinking and swimmer may do extra movements that will slow down the speed. So, I would not think too much about it, but focus on body position and arm stroke technique! :)
Hi! After an accident I began swimming again. I am watching your videos and I am really enjoying it at the same time as I am improving my techniques. Thanks a lot!! I have a question though. In fact, I am not a native english speaker so I can't understand some descriptions. Besides, I see you show most of the time that one arm waits to the other in order to continue with the arm stroke (in spanish it is called "punto muerto"). Is that what you call "drill"? Should we always train like that or can we swim normally during the workouts? XD
Hey Man! Can you give me some tips for sinking legs? I’m focusing on proper body position, breathing and rotation, but I still find my legs sink- I’m pretty muscular and have big legs, but I’ve seen bodybuilders with beautiful technique so I don’t think that’s an issue?
I swim a mile a day on our 25m pool, but Im not fast. I hope this video will help me get faster. Thank you so much.im at 36 to 38 seconds per length (25m). Im 4'11" in height, 98 lbs weight. Tiny woman. I wonder if I will ever get faster, or am I too short?
I’m 37 years old been swimming for 3 months (4x per wk 30mins) today I did 50 lengths in 26.30 (25m pool) freestyle. I’m 4 lengths behind faster swimmers who I swim with . I’m a little on the heavy side 22st but know losing weight long term will help but anything short term which will get me moving faster? Thanks

Great video thanks! For me, lower body resistance first. My legs are still to low but I'm working on your kick practice daily. Ive a question: If you are trying for a fast 100M I assume you can't maintain a pause in the extension as you need a higher stroke rate?
I would decrease water resistance. One way of doing it, is to de-emphasize legs. However there is a question i want to ask. I have troubles with connecting my kicks with the arm pull. Am aware that it is actually advance topic, but do you have any suggestions of how to proceed in order to manage with such issue? Thanks in advance.
Thank you for your comment! You have asked really great question about performing kicks and arm strokes! I will make a video about this topic soon. You need to perform right leg kick at the same time as you perform right arm stroke. Also, at the same time your left hand should enter the water. I hope it helps! :)
You can ask any question about swimming technique! I will answer all of them!
What are you going to do first?
- Decrease water resistance
- Increase power of your arm strokes?
Let me know in the comments!
Decrease water resistance
How to increase stamina for swimming?
Hello, you need to swim with the correct technique and long distances. Also, when you get tired, focus on your technique. It should not be bad.
Decrease resistance.

@eliohayek8955 yes. Sadly that's what my friend said. Thank you for your enlightenment. Will improve kicking from thete

@@SwimUp Perfect reply Evgeny, indeed, focus on body position and proper stroke technique, great advise and appreciate your response.
How to maintain the staight ahead position in the open water swim ?
What brand of swim paddles do you recommend?
Great video thanks! For me, lower body resistance first. My legs are still to low but I'm working on your kick practice daily. Ive a question: If you are trying for a fast 100M I assume you can't maintain a pause in the extension as you need a higher stroke rate?
Very helpful video Any tips on breathing? How to try and stop holding your breath when swimming and turn your head to breathe as quick as possible
Thank you for your comment! Yeah, we have a video for breathing, please check it out: th-cam.com/video/grqQu9oEcEE/w-d-xo.html
Awesome video!!! It helped me a lot!! Thanks!!
Glad it helped! :)
Great! tips thanks you
