  • Paul Schmucker and Todd Deeken are the creators and hosts of Everyday Driver, a TH-cam channel and events company. They specialize in reviews and comparisons of attainable sports cars, and also lead incredible driving events in the U.S. and Europe.
Today we talk about their new long-term car; what the Camaro will become; an expensive air conditioner; their trip from Spa to the Nurburgring (and the impressive ride-a-longs); and TH-cam life.
Plus we answer Patreon questions about replacing a WRX with something more fuel efficient; Porsche GT4RS vs GT3; the best generation of Jaguar F-Type; and how Gordon Murray transcends other boomers.

The everyday driver guys feel very much like an extension to the TST crew rather than a separate media. Always the most car centric podcast when theyre on the show. Hope to see them again in the not too distant future.

Matt, I can’t pretend to understand the obstacles you must be facing running your main channel as well as the podcast. Just know that you and Zack make a huge difference in my enthusiasm for cars and I’m sure for many others. I work from home and it is truly a pleasure to have my coffee and enjoy your videos on a weekly basis. I will be signing up and be in support of your patreon. I will also increase my engagement in all the content you put out. I’m sure that doesn’t make the world of a difference but I hope you’re not considering an exit strategy any time soon. It would just be such a shame. But if you haven’t heard it enough, I appreciate all the work you and Zack do.

Totally agree - love TST. I think in some ways they're making the problem worse by overly focusing on "the algorithm". Obviously you have to consider that, but excessive focus can cause you to veer from your authentic content (which is most successful long-term).
I miss the simple Two Takes and their views were solid, especially considering the limited time required (and thus ROI). Perhaps spinning off Two Takes as a separate channel could work like Everyday did with Test Drive.

Heres a suggestion a big part of growth for a lot of youtube channels is doing appearances on other peoples channels, You and the everyday driver guys should do a co-video in your current style were its you and zach versus paul and todd to get that cross channel subscriptions and algorithm going.

The 10ft Lambo engine hoist is a crock, easiest way to get it out is the car on axle stands, use a 2 post lift to lift the Engine/box instead of the car. Like the tool you use to hold a fwd engine when you do a clutch, but 1m high. Mine is arched to add strength and ties into the front post legs for stability with a 60mm pin /bolt in place of the cradle pads. It cost €200 to make.

Subaru service advisor in MD here. It wasn't a customer of my dealer, but a field engineer and I were talking about carplay connectivity issues, which plague all Subarus btw, don't buy one lol, and he had helped on a case at a dealer in the Baltimore area, where the owner had this consistent issue of wireless carplay and/or xm radio cutting out completely for about 4 minutes every day. The case was actually escalated to the point where engineers were driving the car every day to data log. It wasn't until they replicated the customers commute route on the beltway that they realized what was happening. There was some specific cell/radio tower that, while the car was in a certain proximity, like maybe a half mile or something, the signal noise coming off the tower would interfere with the cars connection. He couldn't tell me what signal source exactly was the issue (I'm not sure they knew either), but basically they had to tell the customer that there was nothing wrong with the car. I don't know if this happens much with other brands. I understand why Subarus are affected as the infotainment systems are horrible in general (clunky UI, underpowered processing, and buggy software), but I wonder if Paul and Todd were experiencing a similar interference issue in Park City.

1:24:29 the answer is yes, I have a 981 Boxster and when it’s very hot after a spirited drive or a trip in summer you can feel a smell coming from the back of the car where the engine is. I guess is due to the heat on some engine parts like rubber tubes or similar things. Nothing wrong with that, car has been faultless since day 1 and I have now 73k km.

All this talk about wired connections to phones (and other devices for that matter), and I just have to say I've never had any luck with the wireless charging. Even wireless mice in my office sometimes have interference with all the other wireless devices around, so I switched to 100% wired and never looked back.

Quick counterpoint to the Carplay cable discussion: it can actually save the battery of your phone to not always charge it to 100% (why I don't charge my phone at night time). Nicest thing I've realized about wireless Carplay in my car is my phone stays in that optimal range of 40%-80% with wireless charging. You can't wireless (trickle) charge and be plugged into a cable at the same time. In my old car with wired Carplay, my phone was constantly at 95%-100% with 1 hour long drives.

14:45 “mid-rear engine” stacked-battery, driver-focused EVs have been around all along (and more are coming) - they just don’t sell as well as boring, practical, floor-pack cars with more cells, longer range, higher horsepower, more interior volume, etc. I’m particularly excited for Lotus’s Project LEVA, though it’s a couple years out. High end EV’s get it, though - look at Speirling, Evija, and so on. 2008-2012 Tesla Roadster was stacked-pack AND screenless!

23:30 Bluetooth network uses ISM band around 2.4 to 5Ghz and is 100 micro watts/0.1W hence why it only works line of sight. If there is a large emmiter of electo magnetic energy then this will overwhelm the WiFi reciever. It doesn't have to be much as your microwave oven uses 1000w. So it would only have to leak one ten thousandths of its power to overshadow your wifi. If you have an industrial or medical unit emmiting a large signal then it can't hear your 0.1w of signal. Normal car problem is people drive to the top of a mountain with a Radio mast on it and their key fob won't unlock the car or park next to a substation, hence why cars have the fob into ignition or drivers door if keyless entry is noisy.

  • @JETZcorp
    @JETZcorp ปีที่แล้ว

I'm surprised they chose the V6 F-Type. It's a good sounding V6, but it's just the V8 with 2 pistons taken off. And I don't mean they deleted 2 cylinders and shortened the block, the engine is literally the same size in every particular, and there's just a huge gaping hole inside the engine where the extra cylinders used to be. They did it do that accessories, coolant hoses, radiator shroud, etc could all be in common with the V8, but it also means it's very nearly as heavy. It's the kind of engineering shortcut that even GM wouldn't have the stones to pull. But I haven't driven the car - maybe it's lovely.

Those people you're talking about at 1:01:00 who are surprised you still exist likely never subscribed to your channel in the first place. They saw one of your videos and then got fed another one and watched that and so on and so on. And one day or a couple times in a row they didn't click on your video in their Recommended page or went down a different rabbit hole, and you were gone forever. Either that or they did subscribe but they never go to their Subscriptions page and only consume videos from the Recommended page which is all algorithm based. Whether I'm subbed or not, if I watch a couple Hot Ones videos YT is going to feed me more Hot Ones videos. When I stopped clicking on them they stopped showing up on Recommended. So you're at the mercy of the homepage in a lot of cases.

It's like going to a restaurant that serves Italian. Then you show up the next day and it's Chinese food. And your like what? I thought this was an Italian restaurant then the person leaves. That's my stupid thoughts on the content. Cheers

If the scripted and produced videos aren't making any money I say cut it out. It seems like a lot of commenters like them but I much prefer the videos where you guys just ride together and shoot the shit and say what's on your mind. So if those are easier, why not go back to that? I know y'all are chasing numbers and obviously guys like Throttle House have eclipsed TST in viewership (they do a great job at their thing), but I'm just throwing in my two cents as a super long time viewer here. I liked that you guys had your own thing that I couldn't get anywhere else (or at least not with any other channel I'd been exposed to). The Two Takes (Double Take still seems like a more fun name) was the high point of the channel for me personally. I think so many other people are doing the same scripted voiceover showdown type of format that you guys going after that just feels like pissing in the lake of similar content. I know we all grew up watching Top Gear and the format worked, but I liked that you guys had your own unique niche and angle. And I want to cut you some slack too knowing when something is new we shouldn't expect y'all to be perfect at it right from day 1. Feel free to tell me to stuff it because it's your business not mine, but as a picky viewer I think the format you guys are toying with now requires a level of production that would require even more investment. Better microphones and recording for the voiceovers, better cameras for the shooting, etc. I'm likely just way pickier than most people, though. And if the numbers support it, well fuck me right? Either way thanks for all the free content over the years. I should say I got to a point I watch more of the podcast videos than the reviews in the last year or two. Anyway I've ranted/rambled long enough. I will say I do like that the new videos you have the table roundup at the end after having had time to reflect more. But I think having that at the end of a Two Takes would work as well or better as a foil for the unscripted initial reaction section. Anyway cheers guys.

Of course Matt finds a way to bitch about being a successful TH-camr. Man used TH-cams car community to build his reputation as a journalist and as a car influencer so much so he was able to use his influence and connections to build his collector car storage but I swear to god that man absolutely hates TH-cam and any type of audience.

Great show but These dudes talk over each other a lot and interrupt. Kinda makes it hard to listen

You've had enough guests to realize that having more than three mics results in this disaster for your listeners: at least two jerkoffs talking at the same time or fake-nervous-breath-heavy laughter while two or more people are on tangents... this was rough.

I actually wasn’t fed the side by side content by TH-cam but this made it to my home feed.
I’m subscribed to SmokingTire but not the podcast, completely unfounded but I get better recommendations for channels I’m not subbed to ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
