Brass Door Handle spring replacement - SAVE $$$

Has you door handle's spring broken???
Rather than throwing away or replacing the whole door handle just replace the spring for a few $$ or ££. Its fairly easy to do, all you need is a screw driver and a bit of patients.
Spare parts can be found on eBay or other web sites.

Sounds good, tell us how you get on! Worth getting a tool then to handle the lock spring fitting as that was a pain as you can tell in the video.

My handle has no circlip - only a steel washer with notches to limit the handle movement. This seems to have been put on and held solid by friction. Trying to lever up this steel washer bends it. How do i get this off?

@@joewoodford9428 Yes, eventually. I worked out that the shaped washers were held in place by the brass of the inner part of the hanle having been beaten and rolled over. I filed a small amount of this off then managed to prise the washers off, and remove the handle, and extract the spring. I made a new spring for each side of the door handle by fixing an electric drill in my bench vice and manually turning the chuck with a bolt while winding 1.5mm piano wire around a dowel. Once I found the right size of dowel (Trial and error), making the springs was not difficlt. I hammered the washers flat, gently hammerd the brass of the inside door handle back until I could slip the washers over it, then re-beat the brass to hold the washers in place. Now I have to handles good as new!

Circlip pliers make the job of getting the circlip on and off easy, [cheap to buy online].

I've used a circlip pliers to remove the clip no damage and they can rtgen be reused and the coil spring is 2 turn you can also get 3 turn spring so be sure you have the same spring as you are replacing.

Hi depends on the door handle, they are called "Door Handle Spring Replacement Internal Coils", you need to count the number of turns of the coil, either 2 turns, 2 & 1/4 turns or 2 & 1/2 turns. Good luck !!

@ Derek Laheen, the parts were bought off eBay for a couple $$/££. Suggest you google them or check out your local eBay sellers. Good luck , they are fiddly to fix as you can see but worth it and much cheaper than new brass handles. If helpful please think to Sub and LIKE :)

Circlip Pliers are cheap and useful once a year! but they save you so much aggro. For example: most of this very helpful video is showing how annoying it is to force on and off. If you pry the clip off (LIKE WE ALL HAVE DONE!) then PROTECT YOUR EYES! But Thank You.X

Yup those would have been handy, though not every one has them. For 90% how don't this is a method you can try. Use safety glasses is great idea !
