Yeaaaah, this movie & the source material caused sooooo much collateral damage through the way it so poorly represents BDSM relationships. It eschews the shrine of consent & safety, it misrepresents the things that lead people to have these sorts of relationships & it is in general, a poorly thought-out smutty fanfic of an original series with it's own bag of problems. So if you're interested in getting into kink this movie can really be a good guide... stay away from the Christian Greys out there!

This video just brought me a memory. In 2016, I met this older guy in an airport and he was obsessed with this movie. We stayed in touch and he told me to watch it and days after I watched it, he sent me an email with a bd*m contract, it had 14 pages. Mind you, I was 21 and he was 44. That freaked me out and I cut communication. Now I know I was being groomed
It's so much better if it's read as a story of the cycle of abuse instead of as a love story, about how trauma can make us traumatic, and how even with "the one" it takes work to get through the parts that were broken and fix them, and even with the best of intentions, if we don't do that work, we WILL hurt those we love. It was SO CLOSE to having substance, and it will forever annoy me that they didn't bridge that gap

BUT AT THE SAME TIME!!!! You know what? BDSM does not have to be sexual. You can still get the benefits of it (giving away your control/being taken care of OR being the one in charge/caring for a vulnerable person) without the sex part. non-sexual kink shit is awesome IMO.
I'm aroace and you've got me curious about how nonsexual kink works, but I can't find anything about it online. Could you explain a bit more, or point me in the direction of resources that explain it? I'm genuinely curious :o
ContraPoints's analysis of this thing scared me. The reason it appeals so...is because of how much undue shame women are raised to have about sex, but in the context of "this is just happening, I can't stop it, may as well enjoy it" speaks to a frightening degree of the psychoses women develop when living in this society.
And it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't society because women get shit on if they are at all curious about it (or not at all, if you're Asexual like me) and then get shit on if they do have sex or don't have sex... nothing you do as a woman will ever truly please society, so I just tell women to explore what they are curious about and ignore society cause you can never please the world.

I saw more of that clip with the costume designer, and I found it fascinating how he describes the various outfits of Christian himself and how they are supposed to show the various stages of him slowly opening up to Ana from scene to scene. It shows that many people behind this movie actually put their brains into this project and cared. I just find that really neat.

3:09 I am a lifelong reader. I have been reading obsessively since I learned to read. I go through several books in a month and read every day for at least an hour. I very passionately feel that even books that contradict current cultural norms and values have historical and/or cultural value. I also feel that suppressing and banning controversial books is abhorrent. Books written by dictators (Mein Kampf) or about gay penguins raising a chick (And Tango Makes Three) are important. The former because lack of awareness about our history just means we’re doomed to repeat it. The latter because controversial literature forces us to address our own resistance to ideas we disagree with; this doesn’t mean that these stories don’t reflect others’ values, beliefs, or reality. I’ve read several things that I regret reading. Of the hundreds of books I’ve read, Fifty Shades of Gray is the second worst. It is horribly written and I don’t know if it was edited but the publication and success of this series has, in my opinion, led to several other poorly written books that are now published. Before Fifty Shades, I knew that if I read a published work I could expect a certain quality level. This was not the case with fanfiction because that is highly variable, but if it was published, I could expect a standard of editing and proofreading at the very least. Now, I find some published novels are akin to poorly written fanfiction. And don’t get me started on the phrase “inner goddess”… My other issue with Fifty Shades of Grey is that it perpetuates this horrifically twisted version of BDSM. Enough has been said on that topic so I do not feel I need to elaborate on this point. Now that the backstory has been established, the statement that comes to my mind when this topic comes up can be properly appreciated. I have read stories featuring characters and situations that are both wonderful and terrible. I have read works that never should have been written because imagination can be… Disturbing. I have read works that are so wonderful, imaginative, rich, and vibrant that stories come alive. I have read fiction and nonfiction featuring both how wonderful people can be to each other and how truly terrible people can be towards each other. All of those books, I would say have the right to exist. But Fifty Shades? That, I would burn. Not because it’s a shitty book because plenty of those exist in the world; indeed the definition of “a good book“ is highly subjective. I would burn it because it popularized abuse on a grand scale. Before reading “Fifty Shades of Grey,” I never thought that I would genuinely believe burning a book would be a good thing.
I'm an asexual trans man who enjoys smut but the relationship dynamic was just all kinds of wrong and the treatment of BDSM and even just sexuality in general was frustrating. I'm willing to let plenty slide in the name of kink, but treating Christian's tastes as the result of mental problems that need fixing and having he and Ana being so clearly on different wavelengths in all things (sex, romance, LIFE) just ruined any ability I had to roll with the problematic aspects.

THATS HORRIFYING im glad you got out of there 💖😭
Yeaaaah, this movie & the source material caused sooooo much collateral damage through the way it so poorly represents BDSM relationships. It eschews the shrine of consent & safety, it misrepresents the things that lead people to have these sorts of relationships & it is in general, a poorly thought-out smutty fanfic of an original series with it's own bag of problems.
It opened the eyes of a lot of straight people to the concept of kink but without *any* of the nuances or appropriate care.
@@ahealthkit2745 It's why I hate when dumbasses who know nothing about something make movies like this. It tells the world the wrong message and then ruins things for those who liked it and practiced it the right way. Like how people don't understand Asexuality properly (lots of people just assume we're broken/mentally ill/need to get assaulted to understand real sex so I've had lots of assaults over young dumb boys touching me to prove a point) or how Hollywood doesn't truly understand things like disabilities and such. It's so much better if it's read as a story of the cycle of abuse instead of as a love story, about how trauma can make us traumatic, and how even with "the one" it takes work to get through the parts that were broken and fix them, and even with the best of intentions, if we don't do that work, we WILL hurt those we love. It was SO CLOSE to having substance, and it will forever annoy me that they didn't bridge that gap

okay so sex-semirepulsed aroace here, I had to stop watching this video around 32:00 because I just got so icked out about everything. Even consensual hot sex where everyone is happy and excited gross me out a bit, so the weird coercion dom stuff made me physically gag. I had to go even when the aces were roasting it! can confidently say that I do NOT want anything to do with this movie!!!
BUT AT THE SAME TIME!!!! You know what? BDSM does not have to be sexual. You can still get the benefits of it (giving away your control/being taken care of OR being the one in charge/caring for a vulnerable person) without the sex part. non-sexual kink shit is awesome IMO.
Same. had to skip to the critique. Lets give a moment of thanks for timestamps letting us skip the ick and go to the goss

Yeah. It’s a shame because like, I get it why that’s the common fantasy but it too often gets interpreted as a positive reality
The framing of Christian's s**ual abuse as freeing is so fucked up

Personally I don't care if this movie caused Sam Taylor Johnson's credibility to take a hit because she's a bad person and that's the least she deserves!
She should be in prison for grooming Aaron as a 12 year
as an autistic asexual woman with a special interest in sex and kink but know nothing about fifty shades, i will find this video very interesting, thank you evasive.
Do you know the TH-camr Evie Lupine? Her whole channel is about bdsm/kink and she is asexual too!
that's a wild biography
If your profile pic Asmodeus from Obey Me?! :D
as a follow up to this, i hate this film, the people that made it (mainly the costume designer for the lead) and what it has done to the perception of kink by the masses. shout out to the person that came up with B.C. before consent, probably my favourite part of this video 😂.
omg im an autistic ace with a sex/kink SPN too!!! thats awesome
And don’t get me started on the phrase “inner goddess”…
My other issue with Fifty Shades of Grey is that it perpetuates this horrifically twisted version of BDSM.
Being from WA, there's a surprising number of embarrassing movies that take place there. Death Note (Netflix version) is another.
Don't forget Twilight itself.
And they never actually look like they take place in Washington.
Also from Washington and I was just so confused when I heard Anastasia was going to WSU and went to interview Christian in Seattle TT-TT
What did UW say no?
I thought it was set in NYC
I forgot Death Note was in Seattle 😂 man what a film
I was so happy to see everyone collectively react to seeing Danny Elfman's name come up, because I still don't know how they managed to get him on board for not only this movie, but the WHOLE TRILOGY (even if the soundtracks *are* the best part of the series). 😅
Danny's just a weird but cool guy. If I remember correctly he randomly showed up at the Sick New World Festival in Las Vegas this year and people were like *surprise Pikachu* over it, too.

Wake up babe, new Evasive video just dropped!!!!
YIPPPE
My favorite thing about 50 shades of grey is that it's just a rip-off of twilight, which Stephanie Meyer wrote because she was turned on by the vampire image of My Chemical Romance, and MCR started their band as a creative outlet to deal with the aftermath of 9/11. So in my brain, 9/11 made 50 shades of grey. 2 American tragedies for 1 low low price!
Well, it started out as a fanfiction of Twilight but NSFW.
the genius of luring asexuals with garlic bread is it also repels vampires
Hearing the wardrobe guy talk:
Thanks, I hate it.
OMG IT'S MADAME WEB
My hobbies are being evil and boning 💅💯

20:00 I literally paused here to be like "omg that's just like my dog!!" and to have another ace girlie immediately comment the same thought is absolutely baller
“find a bear, choose the bear!”😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
