All the discussion about cis people getting gender dysphoria is so interesting! My best friend is a cis woman, and she told me about a time she explored gender some- she tried out they/them pronouns for a couple weeks, and felt gross the whole time. She was worried that it was because she had some unconscious transphobia to work on, and I told her "no, that just sounds like it made you dysphoric. Your gender identity wasn't being affirmed" and it was like a lightbulb went off. She's like "I knew you deal with that every day, but oh my gosh, now that I've felt it, that's awful!" I feel so bad for cis people who deal with emasculation, being told they're not ladylike, to man up etc, end up feeling bad/guilty for normal human behavior, but don't have the language to understand why the pressure to conform is hurting them. Gender roles hurt everybody and I'm glad more and more people are expanding their understanding of what it means to feel limited.
Idk if it’s actually gender dysphoria, but for me as a cis woman I feel deeply unfortunate with looking masculine or being treated in ways I feel like are how men are treated and actively work to appear more feminine through makeup and clothes/recoil if I feel girls are treating me like they would a guy. But it could be more of an insecurity than dysphoria?
@@StarlitGlitch well its different to ig be treated like "one of the guys" vs being called a guy for an example. cause that persons friend was unknowingly being referred to by the wrong pronouns (since she ended up going by/being comfortable with she/her after all) and it made them feel grossed out/wrong

I’m a gay guy and was never that into masculine things as a child and that felt very isolating. I’ve tried to explain to people before but struggled to get across the idea that I’ve definitely felt gender euphoria as a cis man, where I’ve enjoyed something traditionally masculine and loved it. I know that it shouldn’t matter so much, but it feels like an assertion of ‘yes, I’m a man’ which is not something I felt much as a child. I know traditional gender roles are BS but there’s something so validating to me for my own gender to like really get into watching sport or excel at some DIY for example that makes me feel so happy. I have quite a few trans and NB friends now and enjoy hearing them describe gender euphoria and I think more people should acknowledge it when it happens, cause I reckon society would be less hostile to the trans community if people also took time to notice when they really feel validated in their own gender, but I guess maybe if you’ve never felt emasculated or misgendered or similar you wouldn’t notice or appreciate the opposite when it happens.
@@borntobetogetherI don't know you and I don't want to tell you how to live, but as a transmasc person who uses they/them pronouns I just want to reassure you no matter what pronouns you choose or who you want to be, you are valid no matter what. What you are experiencing and the exploration of your gender is not fake in any way, and it's your identity so do whatever you want with it. You deserve to feel comfortable in your own skin
kid me was really upset by the ending because she didn't stay as a boy. i thought that every girl would choose to live as a boy if they could. every time a girl character dressed up as a guy to make people think she's a guy i would always feel like "god i wish i could do that" and get envious of how well they passed as male.
I hadn't even thought of that but you're absolutely right. Every time that happened in a story or movie I'd be like, 'yep, that's definitely the way to go' then they'd go back and I'd be like wth that's not how it's supposed to end.
I was really into stories with passing and gender bending as a kid. I would usually get the same way whenever at the end they would go back to presenting as their original gender. But really mostly because it usually also meant going back to performing all the dumb gender roles or expectations. It always seemed like the themes of the story were "gender based restrictions are dumb" and "be yourself". But almost inevitably after the reveal, especially with girls they would go back to long hair, make up, and end up with a boyfriend at the end who only allows himself to love her because she's actually super femme. Sometimes it was even worse and they give up on their original ambitions now that they have proven they are capable and retire into expected femininity. And everyone treats them less well than they did while passing so playing it as a good thing always seemed bad to me. Though I suppose I didn't count for dysphoria. I think this movie did better than many in its ending. But it still decided "girl" meant hair must be down and long despite how impractical that is for soccer. Putting the priority on femininity rather than her litteral goals. I played soccer, I was offended. I also hated the SA comedy and how most of the characters were gendered stereotypes. So I came away with a bad taste. Painter of the Wind and Coffee Prince are more my style.
SAME as a kid i read/watched a lot of stuff about women pretending to be men and was always so disappointed when they returned to their female selves in the end. i rejected canon endings and just believed they continued being men. every time i tried to write a story about a girl who pretended to be a boy, these "girls" remained boys in the end. later i learned this is called "transmasc" and this is what i am.
But it's impossible to force lesbians to watch But I'm a Cheerleader because it's an actual good lesbian film. How can Evasive satiate her sadistic urges if her captives are enjoying the movie?
I dont know that's the same category as these bc its actually about being gay and intentional positive rep, I need one of those teen movies where the girl is overly close with her bff
I am a cis woman who is roughly 6', with short hair, a bit of a wider build, and a typically more masculine style (I haven't worn any skirts or dresses since leaving school 8 years ago). Because of that, I have constantly been confused for a man. People frequently address me as "Sir", "Mister", and (since moving to France) "Monsieur". It is definitely possible for cis people to experience gender dysphoria- not that cis people have it "as bad" as trans people, as gender dysphoria is merely one of many things they have to deal with. I also grew up constantly being told that no one could ever love me due to things like my height, build, and style when compared to my gender and sexual orientation ("no guy is going to want to stand on their tiptoes to kiss their girlfriend!!" etc), similar to what some trans people feel.
I dunno if anyone has told you about this, but some men definitely love tall women. For example I have a guy friend who is like 6'2" and wants a girlfriend taller than him, ideally. Also he's bi so presentation doesn't matter. I'm not trying to set you up or anything, just letting you know if there's one person like that there's more.
As a pre-T trans man with not that many transmasc folks in my life, I feel so much kinship with these guys and I'm only 6 minutes in. It's so nice getting gender affirmation like this. I think I'd like to hang out with them
I was super curious so I actually looked up the script for the movie, he says twiglet. which i looked up and they’re a brand of british pretzel sticks basically. so he said amanda’s built like a pretzel stick
Evasive needs to stop coming up with ways to kidnap the trans community, who knew if I wanted a T4T boyfriend I just needed to set pizza rolls and beer out
It's funny to me how I always LOVED the trope of a "straight" character falling in love with another character while this second character was pretending to be from the same gender, like She's the Man, or Mulan, I was a kid, or teenager, and I was fascinated, it was wonderful how attraction transcends gender... years later I realized I'm bi so... that explains a lot haha
no one mentioned this but in his introductory scene where everyone immediately said he was transmasc Sebastian is wearing a fucking shirt for the Violent Femmes, which granted is a real band with a storied history but it's INSANE that they chose the punk band with that name
I’d argue that you could just say it gave Amanda Bynes gender dysphoria, no reverse about it. I believe that cis people can have gender dysphoria about their AGAB. Gender Dysphoria to me is a discomfort in how you see yourself based on your gender identity
Exactly, it's just more uncommon for Cis People. Literally ask any cis person if they would be the other gender forever and they will most likely be really depressed at that idea.
I experience this because of my pcos symptoms. My friend is trans and she and I were discussing it. I've heard similar feelings with several cis women with pcos who grow facial hair.
Hello, I once took a Shakespeare theater class, and this is my two cents on how Sebastian and Viola not looking much alike in this kinda works with the Shakespeare tradition. Something that the theater teacher of my aforementioned Shakespeare class pointed out is that back in Shakespeare's day, the parts of identical twins (like in Comedy of Errors) weren't necessarily played by real life identical twins. The "identical" twins looking totally different lent itself to the audience being in on the joke with mistaken identity arcs; the characters "can't tell the twins apart" but the audience can and therefore knows what's really going on.
22:14 You know what would have been funny? If the dad had gone "That's my girl!" as a callback to the "That's my boy!" from earlier and to show that he's not sexist. Alternatively, if you'd think that would be too weird, they could have given that to the mom. Either way, them both acting emberrased doesn't work.
Mom going "That's my girl!" and the dad just looking shocked would've been really funny! Truly a missed opportunity not to capitalise on it and revers the joke there!
this video unintentionally gave me the impression that if I leave pizza rolls out in MY living room, cute guys will arrive, but I'd probably eat all the pizza rolls myself first
the line "after a hard day of being a straight boy" made me spit my water out lmao, there were two weeks after i came out as trans that i was a 'straight' guy and honestly it was rough, saw some hot men not long after though so no worries xox
as a trans man, I can confirm that, everytime you need to cispass, a lot of pretty girls will appear from nowhere and be like "omg hi baby- I MEAN, ex baby 😏😏"
7:43 Fun fact: The producers actually wanted Jesse McCartney to be cast as Sebastian. They thought that Jesse resembled Amanda and since Jesse is a pop singer and Sebastian is a musician, they thought the casting would’ve been great. But Jesse’s schedule didn’t align with the filming schedule so he didn’t take the role.
Ik it's a lot of work, but Amanda playing both characters would've made this so much better. Totally understand if they considered it and decided against it though
I LOVED She's the man in middle school. I just really liked the idea of being able to pass as both a boy and a girl, and to have both girls and boys interested in me. I realized later on that I was a bisexual genderfluid person. kinda ruined my life haha Mulan was my favourite Disney movie for a long time. I did like super girly things like Barbie when I was a kid, which is why people don't believe me lol
Subjecting fellow trans people to movies is such a good TH-cam niche for you. Can’t wait to see more of these and everyone you’ve had on so far is hilarious
This movie is my biggest guilty pleasure, like it’s just so overwhelmingly cheesy. Like it’s so stupid, the plot requires you to just turn your brain off to understand it and that’s sometimes needed. I just want my stupid movies that I turn my brain off, laugh, and waste 2 hours. Also my English teacher showed us this movie when we were reading 12th night.
Amanda was genuinely one of the most talented young actresses of her generation. I was so sad to hear about her mental health and substance use issues. I hope she’s doing better now.

The new investment in this research is staggering, and it all has to do with a 26 year-old leukemia patient who was unresponsive to drugs for 10 years before his doctors noticed the cancer. They nuked him, gave him a bone marrow transplant--thus, new immune system--and his symptoms began to clear up entirely before the treatment was finished. His name hasn't been released yet (I don't think) so you'll have to Google him, but yeah, there's an entire new school of medical research looking into dissociative disorders as possible immunology problems because of him.

"'She's The Man' kicks off with a title sequence that really makes you FEEL that this is 2006" most accurate thing I've ever heard about 2000s movies 😂
I love how movies like this that involve crossdressing are always relatable for trans people in both directions. Trans girls could relate to "having to pretend you're a man when really you're not" and trans guys can relate to "trying to pass as a man when you don’t have the background training to do so" (like we see with this reaction) And also, with a premise like this, no matter how comedic you make it (and to which lengths you are willing to go to avoid any homosexuality actually happening xD) you're still forced to make a commentary about "what does it take to pass as another gender" which is fun
"No homo but Channum Tating looks kinda biteable" is the funniest thing I've heard all week. The single transmasc braincell is making the rounds, and its name is Channum Tating.
Justice for Amanda Bynes - We severely misjudged her back in the day due to paparazzi leeches and now we can watch this and *ALL THAT* with more appreciation.
I was in a highschool program strictly for lgbt students, and while it was generally a really good program they DID make us watch this movie for our english class
I thought the convo was "It'd be great if we did reiki on each other and you're my friend like that." "That's just lesbian sex" As a lesbian, calling each other friends is very much a critical piece of the puzzle
I remember watching this movie when I was in high school and was on the girls soccer team. As an unknown egg/tomboy, watching this movie made me wish I could've swapped with Viola, live my life as a guy and play soccer. I was more focused on Viola/Sebastian's character living it up as a dude than the soccer part (which my coach wanted us to pay attention to). Watching this movie was just another unrecognized sign in my childhood that I was meant for the life of beer and Totino's pizza rolls.
The idea of 20-30 year old men, pretending to be a girl that's pretending to be a boy, having to learn to act like a girl and then having to act like a girl that's trying to act like a boy. It's probably the most entertaining thing I've heard
I just made my largely trans + nb friend group watch Seed of Chucky, and I would defo recommend that for a video idea (also because Seed of Chucky is fucking bonkers)
The ending part about how cis men talk (especially about women) when they don’t know you’re trans is so real. One of my male coworkers when I was 17 (before starting testosterone, but I passed decently well) just casually started talking about how he thought one of our female coworkers was hot (“nice ass” and all that) during work. And like, yeah, she was hot, but you can’t just say shit like that during work, man 😭
I recall covering this with my podcast cohost (haven't watched the video yet) but I remember our discussion being at how fucking horrifying it is that a teacher and student were trying so hard to out her. What if Viola had been trans!? It made the whole thing so gross.
@@megan2386 to be fair. That could've still been her way of exploring her gender to see what felt right without making it a public thing. It's still gross to go after GNC kids and those playing with another gender like as if they are committing a crime. Yes there are legal problems with having the wrong student attending classes, but that is why you would confront the student directly and privately first with care and not be an obsessive gross creep about it. If it's an adult pretending to be a student, then maybe there'd be an actual problem, but a girl pretending to be a boy is not comparable to that.
Honestly, it's so funny how opposite the reactions are for this movie. The trans dudes were so bummed when she flashed her tits, and meanwhile, 11 year old egg me was like "she gets to be a girl AND have cute boobs? :o "

Just a reminder to anyone who sees this that you are not less without your hair. You don't look bad without your hair. You look like a normal, natural human being, and you are beautiful for it. There's nothing wrong with trying to get it back, but don't let these companies make you feel like you're lesser for not having as much hair as they think you ought to.
It's not the cosmetic companies. It's that your "creep factor based on looks" skyrockets by at least 60% with losing your hair depending on the shape of your head. It goes up 80% if you keep the ring in the back, unless you dress like a monk and wear glasses. Then it drops down to 2%.
"he looks trans masc" [ *cut to Sebastian in his long-sleeve 'Violent Femmes' shirt* ] Me: "ʜᴏʟʏ ꜱʜɪᴛ ʏᴇᴀ" "I've been thinking about you... especially at night... late ;3" Viola: "sweet" i fucking love this movie: 12/10
I've actually experienced gender dysphoria as a cis straight woman in high-school, bc I was dressing more masculine and exploring my gender and sexuality. I learned I absolutely hated feeling or being perceived as masculine and started dressing as feminine as possible lol
This movie came out in 2006 and i came out as trans in 2007. I didn't see the movie until much, much later and i remember thinking "Thank God i didn't see this when it came out because i would have gotten seriously warped ideas about how easy it is to pass pre-T."
I’m a trans guy and I remember seeing this movie in theaters when I was in 6th grade. I LOVED it. Still love it. Is it a perfect film? Nah. But it gave me a little burst of gender euphoria at a time when I never got that. Amanda’s portrayal of Sebastian in particular was one I always saw myself in. Just a charmingly awkward goofy lil guy.
I’m not a guy so this has been an interesting experience especially hearing the story about the guy who had a game as a kid where his friends all kicked each other in the balls, like I can genuinely say I’ve never experienced that

When I was a dumb little teenage egg I was so into this movie. Not because it was good, but because I was OBSESSED with the idea of making people think I was a boy. I even convinced myself to pretend I was mute so that I didn't have to worry about having a feminine voice. I did this all while thinking "This is a normal thing for girls to want and do. Look at the movie where girl is just pretending to be guy. This is n o r m a l." (Being trans is normal, but I figured out years later that if you're obsessed with passing as a man then you're probably, at the very least, man adjacent... Also, if your friends aren't willing to be your fake ex, are they really your friends?)

The boys playing soccer to 8-bit Now That We're Men was the icing on the cake for me😂 that song and the Spongebob movie hit different for me as a transmasc adult lol as weird as that sounds, like it's about how you don't need to be anyone else's idea of a man or an adult, you can just be yourself and achieve everything you want. The speech about how "you are who you are" at the end brings tears to my eyes ngl so yeah anyway the Spongebob Movie is a trans movie. to me

Amanda Bynes getting gender dysphoria playing her role really says a lot lol. Also I really hope she's alright, knowing how it feels, I wish she doesn't have to go through that again :(
I was actually really surprised and impressed with this movie. I think context is important. This came out in 2006, when the mainstream narrative didn't really recognize trans people and it wasn't really in most people's vocabulary yet. While this may not technically be about trans people, I think it does a really good job of introducing a lot of the ideas and themes to people in a way that could actually be received at the time and for its target demographic.
I watched this movie 2 months ago and the entire my friend and i were like "if this came out now they'd all just think Sebastian is a trans man and would be trying to hide that they know and support him and it was be so hilariously endearing and when the principal outs Sebastian everyone would HATE him for it"

Unrelated but I’ve definitely seen you before. Maybe the Moral Orel episode playlist?

as a kid i read/watched a lot of stuff about women pretending to be men and was always so disappointed when they returned to their female selves in the end. i rejected canon endings and just believed they continued being men.
every time i tried to write a story about a girl who pretended to be a boy, these "girls" remained boys in the end.

Yeah but “But I’m a Cheerleader” is an actually good lesbian movie

❤️❤️❤️
Also tall, sometimes called Sir. Prefer it to Ma'am.
Tall women are top tier idk what everyone else's problem is
I dunno if anyone has told you about this, but some men definitely love tall women. For example I have a guy friend who is like 6'2" and wants a girlfriend taller than him, ideally.

I'm surprised no one mentioned that genderbent Amanda Bynes is basically Zac Efron on the first HSM. Seriously, it's so uncanny 😂
"Efron ≈ Bynes" was the original "Bieber ≈ Cyrus", eh?
Gotta love how the parents are laughing at their son exposing himself, but when Viola shows her chest in the same fashion they look ashamed
There was so many things wrong with that scene including the reason you just mentioned
Nice pfp
that HAD to be on purpose, right? it's too on the nose
@@Planet_Perfume this is how I explained gender dysphoria to my dad and it just clicked with him.
I experience this because of my pcos symptoms. My friend is trans and she and I were discussing it. I've heard similar feelings with several cis women with pcos who grow facial hair.
So true. I'm a cis woman and sometimes I don't feel like I'm enough of a woman, many women do, that's why they get lip fillers and breast implants
I think it's the reason why they get boob jobs, liposuctions, hair implants, etc. It's just that it's normalized when cis people do it.
I actually prefer menstrual cups to stop nosebleeds

From what I understand, you can only cure schizophrenia with chemo and a bone marrow transplant. But you may or may not need leukemia first to do so.
@@Theomite she has schizophrenia? and it can be cured??? my brother is schizophrenic and i haven't heard anything about it being curable, just manageable.
@@supbroski3202 The latest research indicates that schizophrenia and perhaps a bunch of other disorders are autoimmune in origin.

I love how movies like this that involve crossdressing are always relatable for trans people in both directions. Trans girls could relate to "having to pretend you're a man when really you're not" and trans guys can relate to "trying to pass as a man when you don’t have the background training to do so" (like we see with this reaction)
And also, with a premise like this, no matter how comedic you make it (and to which lengths you are willing to go to avoid any homosexuality actually happening xD) you're still forced to make a commentary about "what does it take to pass as another gender" which is fun

I recall covering this with my podcast cohost (haven't watched the video yet) but I remember our discussion being at how fucking horrifying it is that a teacher and student were trying so hard to out her. What if Viola had been trans!? It made the whole thing so gross.
It's not that they were outing Viola for being trans... they were outing her for pretending to be her brother.
@@megan2386 to be fair. That could've still been her way of exploring her gender to see what felt right without making it a public thing.

I watched this movie 2 months ago and the entire my friend and i were like "if this came out now they'd all just think Sebastian is a trans man and would be trying to hide that they know and support him and it was be so hilariously endearing and when the principal outs Sebastian everyone would HATE him for it"
the 8-bit version of Now That We're Men at the end really ties the whole video together. great stuff
