New Project! -- An 1880's Peppermint Bustle Gown

  • It's time for my first project of 2021! I am heading back to the Victorian era with a new bustle dress, this one from around 1884. I am calling this my Peppermint bustle, as it's made out of red and white striped cotton fabric from the Christmas section at Joann Fabrics. In this video, I will be making the underskirt and overskirt, and starting on the miles of pleats that will adorn these skirts.

      That totally dawned on me later! It makes me think of the bustle dress Emily Blunt wears in Mary Poppins Returns, which is cool, since I had wanted to make that one after the movie came out. :)

    I mentioned this in the comments of another video of yours but I'm planning to make an 1880s dress in a super obnoxious orange fabric that I've found for really cheap and since I've never attempted anything like it before it's great to see people with experience having to go through a lot of trial and error. I'm sure I'll struggle a lot but it'll feel less like I'm doing it wrong and more like it's par for the course! I'm also very glad to be 5'3" right now!

    • @LadyRebeccaFashions
      @LadyRebeccaFashions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good luck on your dress! I feel like, especially with draping anything, there is so much trial and error involved - so you'd be doing it totally normally!

    I love seeing the way you think through what works :) Also the optical illusion that bustle skirts give, and the "We need MOAR BUTT" (from someone with a 52" hip, most of which is backside).
    That designer who said "Let's do this, I don't know how fabric works" was obviously previewing the use of marker pens to put stripes where you want them! (A la @sewstine)

    One option for getting diagonals + symmetry to work in 3D the way it looked on that fashion plate would be to have a centre front seam on the apron that is cut on the bias, giving a chevron pattern there. I've made aprons that way for theatre costumes and they do tend to look very flattering.

    • @LadyRebeccaFashions
      @LadyRebeccaFashions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had thought about that, but you can kind of see past the center front of the skirt on the plate, and there's no chevron there.

      Wintergreen is another one, when I lived in the states I was introduced to wintergreen as a flavour, in the UK it's a medicinal ingredient, there is an antiseptic cream called germolene that smells really strongly of wintergreen. And now I think about it the cream is very pink.

    The ink is transferring from the paper to the iron because it's a heat-based ink. If you're able to make things work on the nylon/acrylic heat setting, there should be little to no ink transfer. It might also be a good idea to put a scrap of thin muslin between the iron and the paper to give an even heat exposure.
    I used to work pretty extensively with heat-based (aka laser) printers and the ink melting point is about the same as a styrofoam cup.

    If you don't want to fold or cut your patterns, my mum and I both use recycling bags to trace out patterns (we have a multi-generational pattern library that's shared between like 7 people, it's important not to cut anything). The good thing about recycling bags is that they're tough and last FOREVER. As in, I have costume patterns from high school (and my grad dress patterns) that I still use and reference. (and that's been. . . well, let's just say it's been a hot minute.)

    Ok, I've had so much going on it took me 3 or 4 times before I got through the whole video 😳. This dress is so adorable... very Mary Poppins... peppermint like😉. And I just wanted to let you know that the day you filmed when you had on the blueish eye shadow!!!😍 OH MY! I've never seen you look so pretty!😍🥰 I just loved it. That should definitely be your go-to look...in my humble opinion 😉. Please do that look more often... just sayin'😏.

    Sooo beautiful! looooove stripes in all colors! But I wonder why you called it peppermint dress? When I hear 'peppermint' I think of green (without stripes) because peppermint plants are green... 🤔
    Maybe that's something I can only know as nativ English speaker? (and I'm not!)

    • @LadyRebeccaFashions
      @LadyRebeccaFashions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Apparently other countries do peppermint differently! In the US, all peppermints are red and white. So wait, what do your candy canes look like?

    • @WindspielArt
      @WindspielArt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh I know candy canes only from Hollywood movies or cartoons. They are no common Christmas candy here in Germany. (or at least they weren't when I was small. Now you can buy them too in red and white but it's nothing "traditional")
      Edit: and Peppermint is something I only think of as tea... tea from kindergarten or when I was ill xD

    Will the skirt be attached to the bodice? If not, an alternative bodice in navy blue with white stars would look pretty cute. I made a barbie gown once that was Navy starred bodice and train over a red and white striped skirt. I completed the ensemble (calling it that makes me laugh) with a pillbox hat made from a coke cap.

    • @tracycastleberry7299

      Ooh, I kind of love that idea! It's a separate bodice, but I might have to make a blue starry one in the future!

    Wow, how tall are you? I'm 6'1" and I often don't have to lengthen skirts that much. Now SLEEVES I need to ad usually 4-5", and from shoulder to waist I need to add a few inches rather than waist to hip.
    ALSO OKAY the way that overskirt drapes and the way the stripes play off eachother???? Thank you for the seretonin.

    • @LadyRebeccaFashions
      @LadyRebeccaFashions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I'm 5'10", but I'm pretty evenly proportioned between top and bottom, so I find I have to lengthen both (though I think I lengthen the bottoms a little more).

    That cut out to size small and resold is just painful. The benefit of getting the digital pattern, you can go to the print shop and get as many copies of the pattern you want printed out on the plodder. (None of that A4 nonsense!)

    • @LadyRebeccaFashions
      @LadyRebeccaFashions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It wasn't really re-sold. It was donated to the Costume College Bargain Basement, and when you buy things there, you pretty much just grab whatever you want, put it in a trash bag, and they suggest a price (you can haggle), and that money goes to Costume College scholarships. So it's not so bad.
