Making a Gothic Victorian Bonnet // DIY Bustle Period Mini Bonnet

  • Today I'm making another accessory to wear with the upcoming day version of my 1880's Victorian bustle gown project. While I have made hats before, I have never made a bonnet, so I thought it may be nice to give it a try for this costume. A bonnet just doesn't sound like a very gothic vampire ready accessory for some reason, but I liked the challenge!

First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

I love “appalled by costume leaning.” I loved Disney and pop culture art and my art teachers... MANY looked down on that as not real art... people... 🤦🏻‍♀️ Adding a little eccentricity to life makes it a whole heck of a lot better!

Crushed velvet capes are great!! 😂 I sewed one for the only high school dance I ever attended... and then did my best to make it a usable outfit piece for the next 3-4 years, despite its being totally not in line with fashions of the time! (The cape fascination just got the better of me...)

Such a lovely dress and bonnet, the colour of the silk always reminds me of absinthe, makes me want to make a whole set of outfits inspired by fancy drinks

I always think of that shade of green (especially if it's iridescent) as either absinthe or arsenic green. Both are very Victorian lol.

So true, Guinivere! I literally spent 3 years trying to find a decent pair of forest green sandals 🤯 (I like coordinating or contrasting footwear with outfits) Had to make do with a thrifted pair of teal-ish ones in the end... Green just seems to be a colour that isn't "in" these days, alas?? 😢
(The previous attempt had been a pair of straw-wrapped sandals that I recoloured using green permanent marker... NOT such a success! 😂)

I have really been wanting to make some hats. I love those half hats from the 40s,50s & 60s. Its really hard to find original vintage half hats in Australia, and if you do find them, they're ridiculously expensive.
Last year I made one for my cousins wedding, to go with a black Unique Vintage fit and flare dress, embroidered with flowers which I added a lace hemline, a new/thicker handmade velvet embroidered sleeves. I had to add some darts in the bust and raise the skirt as I have a short waist.
Unfortunately I still have not been able to wear my first half hat out because while I was in the middle of making my half hat, COVID hit Australia and my cousin had to quickly elope. They hopefully get to retake their vows this Easter on the year anniversary.
We got 3 COVID 19 cases this week and my entire state has gone back into lockdown. Hopefully we won't be in lockdown again this April.
PLEASE do more HATS from all different eras. They make an outfit and are so stunning. Plus green is my favourite colour,
    Take care,
    Janelle (Victoria, Australia)

That hat is so gorgeous! I would also love to see some more hats and especially blocking with buckram. I am trying to find the most efficient way to make a hat/cover for my riding helmet so that I can level up my equestrian costuming game and that sounds interesting.

Love it! I was/am really intimidated by millinary and you made it seem so much easier (though not easy) that I think I might actually be able to do it! Thank you!

I love the bonnet! You made me laugh out loud a couple of times- the tearable/terrible pun was hilarious. I would love to see more hats. Honestly, this one looks so professionally-made, I’m not sure what you could have done differently with more time. Also, I can’t hear the heater noise at all. Don’t worry about it!

Very late to this but loving it! Tip for threads when making millinery frames - running your thread through wax. It strengthens the thread and also helps keep it from tangling. But I’ve also used the Guterman thread for hand quilting that is a little stiff and that works well.

MORE 👏HATTING👏PLEASE! I have a torrid love affair with hats and the more hat videos the better. I devoured the pillbox tutorial on your blog and I'd love some nice millinery videos.

Hi, I just started watching your video and YES!!! I would love to see you make hats. I love hats and can't browsing on Etsy without checking hatblocks. I haven't pulled any triggers yet at there are so many different shapes I like. Watching Miss Fisher Mysteries can be hazardous for your hat decisiveness. So many shapes, to many medical issues.
Thank you for the tip of starching your own material. I have been stuck in a mire trying to figure out how to make two christening bonnets for my great-nephews (also god-nephews) One I haven't met yet that who's hat should preferably work with the christening gown my grand-father was christened in in 1902. The other isn't born yet, but will be arriving any week now hasn't got anything traditional so I can run free with that one. I so is going to steal your method of figuring out how to make the shape. Unless anyone in the comments has suggestions for patterns or alternative methods of course. Those are always welcome. Okay I 'm heading back to your video now. Yours, Ann

12:33 Even though the stitches won't be seen, I take the opportunity to practice perfection... that way my skills are honed. However, l agree, because it won't be seen, it takes the pressure off. 💖🌞🌵😷

I have finally figured out who your voice reminded of!!! It’s Red from overly sarcastic productions! It’s a history/myth/literature channel here, on TH-cam, and an absolute favourite of mine! I’ll admit that your voices aren’t a perfect match, but similar. You must have the same accent or something.
Also, I would love some more videos on millinery, It’s not something that you see often on historical costuming channels after all!

Watching video again for background sound and entertainment while i knit a sweater. Still love the video and hat! There is a local British themed tea parlor that will do a fancy “high tea” if you book it in advance for a group. I’m feeling the need to put together a gathering of friends for tea so i can have an excuse to make a fancy hat for the occasion. Perhaps it needs to be a seasonal occasion, because i want both a cream hat with frilly spring flowers but also a gothic hat with maybe a taxidermic critter. Hmmmmmm

Bonnets stopped being fashionable after the 1880s, hats dominated. However, sun bonnets were worn by lower and middle class women when they were working in a garden or outside, and they continued to be worn into the late 20th century
