What Are Our NEXT STEPS? First - Securing The BENTS For BARNDOMINIUM While Working Solo In The Lift

  • Our last video was SO exciting! Putting up all 8 bents for our barndominium in one day was amazing!
    Now, comes the part that's maybe not as exciting, but necessary and a part of the process. Securing the structure. In this video, Greg secures the bolts and adds the 2x10 header under the rafter beam. Tedious work by yourself - thank goodness for the lift! We also get a load of cedar logs, which is always exciting and Greg shares our next steps for the build.
    We are milling our barndominium - barn house out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill. If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, (which is now our barn house build) make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the first slab last summer, we milled most of the timbers needed over this past winter/spring, added plumbing, put in a second slab for our garage and now we have started building our barndominium - barnhouse - lodge - our home, with 8 bents going up being the latest excitement! Now, we are working on securing the bents and adding to the structure.
    Here's the video where all 8 bents are put up in one day- it was pretty amazing:
    • It's FINALLY Time To B...
    Here's the video where we share our change in plans and decide to turn our barn into our home:
    • EVERYTHING Had To CHAN...
    Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from ‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪@BarnGeek‬ . We are excited to build one of his beautiful barns and turn it into our home:
    • Why Do We Think WE CAN...
    ***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
    Here is a link to the video that shares the sawmill cover / sawmill shed build from start to finish:
    • Sawmill Cover Build - ...
    Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
    3 posts in the front
    4 posts in the back
    Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
    Longest beam is 28 feet
    Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
    It will have a 3 :12 pitch
    Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
    We have shared the entire build!

      Hi, Mike- Wish I didn’t have to work at my “job” - things would be happening faster. Adding more every day!
      Although I must say, my job does give me a break from the heat! 😂 🥵

      @@ourdreaminthewoods The other thing about a "job" is the paycheck!! Makes other things possible, but it sure cuts into the time for the other things. A good part of the time I worked 7 on 7 off. That left a lot of time for the projects. Sometimes it was nice to go back to work though.

      @@mikewatson4644 Very true! Thankfully, I do usually have 2-3 days off at a time. So, at least it's bunched together. I really enjoyed when I worked that schedule, too! Definitely thankful to have a good job that also allows me to tackle this project! As always, thank you for your insight, Mike! 😊

    You said that you didn’t think that it was an interesting video but I still enjoyed watching it.
    And as for the heat and humidity I totally understand. I’m retired now and am cleaning up my tree plantation. Having to work a little bit at a time in the heat and then call it quits for the day. But for the both of us it’s called progress. Enjoy the journey.

    Install more longitudinal diagonals and string line your ridge and floor beams, both sides. Plummet down from the top of each bent leg. GIT R STRAIT AND TRUE and keep her there. The SIPS will anchor everything once installed and fully secured. Outstanding efforts and perseverance, sir. Be well and stay safe.

      Hi, Todd- thank you! I’ve been working on it.
      My actual job is getting in the way 🤣, but getting more added every day.
      I added more bracing to the top of the rafters- they weren’t as true as the rest of the structure. Out a half inch but I was working by myself so I just secured them in place. Thank you for your insight and support- we really do appreciate it. 😊

      @toddwheeler1526 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @ourdreaminthewoods Greg, I don't like to criticize anyone. My apologies. Starting everything as straight and plumb as practical will definitely pay dividends later. Yes sir, work is work and takes priority. Keep yourself healthy, rested, nutrition etc etc. The tortoise and the hare. Guess who wins!! You and the family and team are wonderful examples of how folks should live their lives. One bite, one challenge at a time. And...you will fulfill your DREAM! REALLY GOOD STUFF 👍

      Hi- This is a huge project for us. I have very little construction experience. I enjoy woodworking and have built a shed and a small shop over the years. Nice work! As a builder, I am surprised at the lack of simple temporary diagonal or X bracing: think of knocking over dominos.

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Hi, Charlie- Being a novice, I rely on the people around me to make some of those decisions. I would have put up more bracing but I tend to overdo things.
      Meanwhile, I’ve been focused on putting more components to the structure of firm it up.
      Last thing I want is the domino effect!! 😬
